Friday is Stage and Vendors

Saturday is Vintage, Trendy, Weird and Crafty

J Street Junction  is located in Downtown Lake Worth Beach.  It is the first block east of Dixie Highway and the first block South of Lake Avenue. A wide and quiet street, it is home base for artists and musicians with two art galleries, an arist studio, and three major music venues. Street Festivals, a safe way to gather during covid crisis times, will become the norm for large crowds of art and music lovers.

Beginning on Friday, October 7, performers, artists and the community will gather to launch an experiment in community building through the arts.  Every weekend, neighbors, artists, children, musician, teens, poets, dancers will gather to share their talents, sell their wares and create new art on the spot.

In October, on Friday7  , Saturday 8  , the west side of J Street, the side alley and Rudy’s Pub Patio will create wonderful experiences with  artists and performers for all of the communities of the region.

Artists will Light Up the Night with LED expressions of movement and skilled performance to local DJs who will take the stage, competing with each other for the best sound and vibe.  CCBGProductions and the creators of SPEAK-UP-SPEAK EASY have pulled together artists, collectors, poets, the creative, in a network capable of displaying their works and their talents.  “In The Alley” is an outdoor cooperative street market.

This Launch Party will introduce the community to what is possible.  The community is asked to match this during all of the months from October thru June.

Opening Night will feature “OPEN DECK,”  a venue for electric music.  Sign-up is at 6PM.  Artists are invited to bring their thumbdrives and plug in.  Our hosts for “OPEN DECK” are local celebrity, N.o.M.a.d. with support from Doulas DeJong.

J Street Flow Jam will be led by @Shaktifox (Erykah Picard)  Flow Art is dance and movement using a balanced “flow prop” or instrument, usually lit up with LED lights, or fire, that creates a meditative  and hypnotic experience for both the dancer and the audience.  There will be workshops held during the weekend for those who want to learn the skill.

A variety of classes will be available during the weekend.  These include Introduction to Spicy Fan Tech by Guan Zi.  6-7 PM.  A donation of $10-$20 is suggested..

A series of Three Tiered Rotating Totems are being created for the events.  Each month a famous local artist will paint one of these during the event.  J Strreet will then have 9 kinetic totems that will attract new tourists thoughout the year.  The first of these will be live painted by Chanimal Shepherd, a well know South Florida muralist.  He will be starting a large scale, Black Light art installation.

This first weekend will launch a season of live painters, fire spinners, electronic arts and so much more.  “In The Alley” was created to highlight special talents and support local small business.

And then comes Saturday, the day of Vintage, Trendy, Weird and Crafty.  Vendors will line the block, and when neighbors see what J Street has wrought, they will add to the numbers month after month.  And there will be Popcorn and Cotton Candy.

Propaganda will be presenting a Spooky Mermaid Party on Friday night starting at 8PM with circus performers, vendors and three bands; Tiger Sunset, Mount Sinai and Baron.  $10 cover fee required.

Rudy’s Pub, a sponsor of these events, will be presenting musical performances, both in front of their venue and on their back patio throughout the entire month.  They will have food and beverages available.  On the 15th, Rudy’s Pub along with Rod MacDonald will be holding a fund-raiser for hurricane victims.  This weekend Rudy’s Pub will be producing Hootenanny, a must attend avent.

Flamingo Clay Studio,  a sponsor of these events, will have free art lessons on a regular basis, as well as child friendly treats and special events for children and families to enjoy. During the artist event, teenagers from the Rising Tide Initiative will be teaching children how to Sand Paint Sugar Skulls. They have the supplies and the energy to make 250 children happy.

Happy October and Happy Halloween, 2022!

Hope you’re having a very Happy October!  I’m happy to tell you about our new articles for this month.  Let’s begin with Denise Marsh’s interview with the Executive Director of the Young Singer of the Palm Beaches.  We get an inside view of what makes this organization so amazing in its mission to provide high quality vocal education to youth in our area.  And perfect timing, the YSPB organization celebrates 20 years this year.  See Cultural Corner.”

For a real treat, check out the dog costumes that our pet writer Tricia Roberts is proposing that you try for Halloween.  All super cute, but my personal favorite is the Cheech and Chong costume.  See Paws-itive Press.”

Our Living Greenwriter Cristian DeRusha shows us how to grow dill and how to use it in recipes.  Great information and some added flavor for your kitchen.

In Mommy Moments,” supermom Heidi Hess ponders the question, “How can we be better ambassadors for our state?”  And how can she make her teenage kids appreciate Florida, just as much as they appreciate a trip to another state.

If you’d like to assist with the gigantic task of rebuilding and helping those in need on the West coast of Florida, you can donate to the American Red Cross, which is focused on Hurricane Ian victims right now.

Check out our other articles, our photo galleries and our “News & Events” section too for more great content.  Hope you have a wonderful, slightly cooler month!  And Happy Halloween!!

Sincerely,

Polo Park Middle Schoolers at FIRST LEGO League Kick Off

0

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – Consider it the building blocks to a bright future as the Cox Science Center and Aquarium (CSCA) launched the first Youth Robotics Competition in partnership with the FIRST LEGO League of South Florida. On Saturday, September 17, students between the ages of 9 and 14 kicked off this year’s hands-on robotics competitions with STEM-centric coaches by their side. The Center currently serves as home base for FIRST LEGO competitions with the Stiles-Nicholson Foundation as the presenting sponsor and Florida Power & Light (FPL) as the superpowered season sponsor.

FIRST is the world’s leading youth-serving nonprofit advancing STEM education. Through a suite of inclusive, team-based robotics programs, FIRST has a proven impact on learning, interest and skill-building inside and outside of the classroom. For 30 years, students from all walks of life have developed self-confidence in STEM and valuable, real-world skills through FIRST that open pathways to a better future.

“It takes just a quick conversation with these young participants to realize they have impressive, long-term goals,” said CSCA President and CEO, Kate Arrizza. “These kids are innovative well beyond their years – whether it’s their plan to use robotics to alleviate homelessness or to colonize Mars. We are so excited to be partnering with FIRST LEGO to advance kids’ passions and to keep them engaged in STEM-related hobbies.”

Students gain real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided, global robotics program, helping today’s students and teachers build a better future together. FIRSTLEGO League’s three divisions inspire youth to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills through hands-on STEM learning and robotics centered around a yearly theme

In partnership with FIRST®, the Cox Science Center and Aquarium (CSCA) will support FIRST LEGO League teams across our region as they build and program a LEGO® robot to complete specific missions. The 2022-2023 season’s “energy” theme challenges FIRST teams to reimagine the future of sustainable energy and power their ideas forward.

“These kids are learning skills for jobs that haven’t even been invented yet.  The future of energy–how we generate it and consume it–depends on them,” said Pam Rauch, Vice President, External Affairs and Economic Development at FPL. “We look forward to the next generation teaching us new technology and methodologies that will reshape our energy industry entirely.

As a program delivery organization, The Cox Science Center and Aquarium now serves as the backbone for FIRST LEGO League teams in South Florida, providing support and training, serving as the communication channel for teams, and leading the Regional Planning Team that builds an exciting season of events, qualifiers and competitions.

Formerly the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, the recently renamed Cox Science Center and Aquarium’s current indoor/outdoor venue features more than 100 hands-on educational exhibits, a 10,000-gallon fresh and saltwater aquarium, digital planetarium, Pre-K focused “Discovery Center,” 18-hole conservation-themed Mini-Golf Course and quarter-mile-long outdoor science trail. One of its celebrated displays includes “Journey Through the Human Brain,” a permanent exhibit that features the most advanced neuroscience research in the world. The Cox Amphitheater hosts daily live science shows, seasonal laser shows, and special event programming. The Center took on a new name at the end of 2021 when leadership announced a $20 million gift from Palm Beachers, Howard and Wendy Cox, to launch a transformative capital campaign – with a target completion date of 2025.

Join the excitement and form your own team until October 31! To enroll in the program, please visit firstinspires.org/robotics/fll or call 561-832-1988 for more details.

Florida Grown

0

By Heidi Hess

“Why do we live in Florida?” my beautiful, sulky teenage son asks. The disdain in his voice is palatable. And even though I don’t think he’s doing it on purpose, he’s doing a fabulous impression of Edward Cullen.

“Well, we live in Florida for a lot of reasons.”

This was the start of a long conversation we had while we were hiking on our summer vacation. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park is one of the greenest places. Each turn in the trail reveals a new verdant vista. We were all in awe of the parks beauty. Even my kids were.

“First of all, the beach is nearby and the Atlantic is just a few miles away from us.” I started. “Second, the Everglades is in our backyard and there’s only one other eco system like it in the world.” I continued even though they were unimpressed. “And besides being theme park capital of the world, we also have the oldest city in the country.”

I could have kept naming all the things that make Florida awesome but after watching how unimpressed they were I realized I have not been the best ambassador for our state.

Shame on me. We go on vacations and make sure to visit all the things that make other states great but what have I done (besides sing the praises of the o’mighty mouse and hold court on the latest rollercoaster) to show the kids what makes their own state “The Bomb”.

I made a silent vow on that trip that we would live like tourist here. I want them to feel the call of the ocean when they haven’t seen her in a while. I’d like them to appreciate the chorus of chirps from the crickets and frogs that make their home in the Everglades. And yes, still pay homage to the o’mighty mouse.

What can we do to be a better ambassador for your state? How can we get our kids to love where they live? I pondered these questions while we hiked.

Watching my kids climbing the rocks made me pause. A beam of sunlight peaked through the canopy and lit them up. I fully expected to see my sullen sulky teenagers “sparkle”. But they aren’t fictional vampires from Forks. They are like Florida – beautiful and special all their own.

Trick or Treat

Costumes Aren’t Just for Humans

By Tricia Roberts

Family costumes are so much fun when they include pets. Here are some ideas that are sure to make people giggle.

These costumes require minimal accessories for your pets.

  • Wizard of Oz – Perfect if you already have a dog that resembles Toto! If your small dog doesn’t quite look like the original, just find a picnic basket to put him or her in. Or if your dog is a larger breed, find a lion’s mane to make him the cowardly lion. Then dress up family members as Dorothy, Scarecrow and the Tin Man.
  • Charlie Brown – You don’t have to have a beagle to pull it off. Once your dog has a pair of long black ears (attached to a headband) and stands beside Charlie and Sally, he turns into Snoopy. Add a red bandana that says “Joe Cool” to complete the look.
  • Ratatouille – Add a pair of mouse ears and a curly tail to your pet while you wear a chef’s hat and coat.
  • Shrek – Your pet gets the easy end of the deal here. If your cat will don a feathered cap or your dog will tolerate donkey ears, all you have to do is paint yourself green, add some horns and dress in medieval clothes.
  • Dr. Dolittle – Have a lot of pets? Throw on a doctor’s coat and stethoscope and you’re all set!
  • Ace Ventura Pet Detective – Another easy one for the pets. Just have them around while you wear an unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt over a white tee.
  • M&M’s – Add a white ‘m’ to any solid-colored bandana or shirt and your pet can be one of the tasty candies. Choose solid tee shirts in other colors for the rest of the family.
  • Men In Black – Have a pug? This one is for you.

Now for the ones that are a bit more involved, but just as much fun.

  • Pirates of the Caribbean – What’s cuter than a pet dressed as a pirate? With plenty of characters, there are enough costume options for everyone in the family.
  • Star Wars – So many options here! Your pet could be Yoda, Chewbacca, Darth Vader or almost any other character from the films. Possibilities are endless for the kids and adults too.
  • Peter Pan – Once the humans are dressed as Tinkerbell, Captain Hook and Peter Pan, dress your dog in a crocodile costume and he’s Tick-Tock. We did this one a couple of years ago and people still talk about it.
  • Alice in Wonderland – This one is especially cute if you have a cat willing to wear a  Cheshire Cat costume.
  • Scooby Doo – If you have the right amount of people, this one is a hit. There are dog costumes for Scooby Doo and The Mystery Machine.

Finally, the costumes just for pets with no participation necessary from the humans.

  • Garfield and Odie – If your pets are the right color, you won’t even need costumes for this. Just add a pan of lasagna to make it obvious.
  • Cheech and Chong – This requires your pets to wear wigs and clothing, but if you can pull it off, it will be remembered for years. (Photo credit: @haoleboysurfs on Instagram)
  • Super Mario Brothers – Dress one pet as Mario and the other as Luigi.
  • Ghosts – This one is super easy. Just cut some holes in a white sheet and drape it over your dogs. Have them hold a jack-o-lantern bucket in their mouth for added smiles.
