Palm Beach Opera Announces 2018 Performance Schedule

Palm Beach Opera Announces
2018 Performance Schedule
· Giacomo Puccini’s TOSCA – January 26-28
· Leonard Bernstein’s CANDIDE – February 23-25
· Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s LE NOZZE DI FIGARO (The Marriage of Figaro) – March 23-25

(West Palm Beach, FL – July 27, 2017) Palm Beach Opera recently announced its 2018 main stage opera season that will present three audience favorites at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach. Season subscriptions are now available for purchase.

“The 2018 season showcases a wonderful mix of two well-known, beloved operas and one Palm Beach Opera premiere,” said Daniel Biaggi, General Director. “We are delighted to welcome so many internationally acclaimed performers to Palm Beach in important productions, which are sure to excite our audiences. Building on last season’s growth of our subscriber family and patrons overall, we anticipate several sold-out performances again.”

· Giacomo Puccini’s TOSCA
January 26-28
A tragic tale of a romance complicated by dirty politics and betrayal, TOSCA will feature a stellar cast of amazing performers, including:
+ Soprano Keri Alkema, whose lirico-spinto soprano voice has been praised by The New York Times as an “appealing brew of dark and creamy colors.” She will portray the title role on January 26 & 28.
+ On January 27, Alexandra Loutsion returns to the Palm Beach Opera stage as Floria Tosca, following her successful performance earlier this year as Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly.
+ The lead tenor role of Cavaradossi is shared by Riccardo Massi (January 26 & 28), who recently performed the same role at Royal Opera House Covent Garden; and Adam Diegel (January 27), who thrilled the audience last season as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly.
+ Scarpia is portrayed by Michael Chioldi, who’s been seen on the Palm Beach Opera stages as Rigoletto, Macbeth, as well as Germont (La Traviata).

Palm Beach Opera Chief Conductor David Stern will lead the cast and orchestra of TOSCA. Stage director of the production, designed by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, will be Fenlon Lamb, who directed the critically acclaimed Don Pasquale and Il barbiere di Sivigila at Palm Beach Opera.

· Leonard Bernstein’s CANDIDE
February 23-25
From February 23-25, Palm Beach Opera celebrates the 100th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth with his comic operetta CANDIDE, in the first ever fully staged Bernstein work presented by Palm Beach Opera. For this colorful multi-media production, Chief Conductor David Stern (a friend of the Bernstein family) will be at the musical helm, and Jay Lesenger will be the stage director.

Recent Juilliard graduate and upcoming tenor Miles Mykkanen will sing the title role of Candide in his Palm Beach Opera debut. Also making her company debut, soprano Alisa Jordheim, lauded for her “flawless coloratura” and “pinpoint high C’s,” portrays the character Cunegonde, while former Palm Beach Opera Benenson Young Artist Tobias Greenhalgh plays Maximilian. Adding luster to the cast, opera legend mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves returns to Palm Beach Opera as The Old Lady, and Tony Award nominee Ron Raines debuts as Pangloss.

· Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s
LE NOZZE DI FIGARO (The Marriage of Figaro)
March 23-25
On March 23-25, Palm Beach Opera presents Mozart’s poignant masterpiece Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), a new co-production between Palm Beach Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Opera Philadelphia, and San Diego Opera under the direction of Stephen Lawless. Set and Costume designs are by Leslie Travers, with Lighting Design by Thomas C. Hase.

Antonino Fogliani returns to conduct the Palm Beach Opera Orchestra and an international cast that includes Italian Marko Mimica in his Palm Beach Opera debut as Figaro, and Janai Brugger, Palm Beach Opera’s Juliette in Roméo et Juliette and Norina in Don Pasquale, will appear as the bride-to-be, Susanna.

The Countess will be sung by Caitlin Lynch, whose performance of Mozart’s leading ladies at the Metropolitan Opera, Seattle Opera, Glyndebourne, and many more have drawn consistent praise. Multi-media artist David Adam Moore, praised for his “lush baritone,” sings the Count, and Irene Roberts, graduate of the Benenson Young Artist Program who has gone on to the San Francisco Opera, Metropolitan Opera, and Berlin State Opera, returns to Palm Beach Opera as Cherubino.

The annual Children’s Performance, a one-hour abridged version of Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), will take place on Saturday afternoon, March 24, starring members of the Benenson Young Artist Program and the Apprentice Artist Program, conducted by Associate Conductor and Chorus Master Greg Ritchey.

Palm Beach Opera’s 2018 Gala
& Other Musical Events
Scheduled for February 15 at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Palm Beach Opera’s 2018 Gala will include a concert by internationally known superstar soprano Sondra Radvanovsky, who will open the Metropolitan Opera’s 2017-2018 season in the title role of Norma. Festivities include a cocktail reception, gourmet dinner, champagne dessert buffet, and evening entertainment.

Additional events scheduled are the annual Liederabend performance, the Palm Beach Opera Guild Annual Dinner, Opening Night Dinners, and the Lunch & Learn series. League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County Invites the Public to FREE Panel Discussion at the Palm Beach Post Auditorium in West Palm Beach
Saturday, August 12 – 9 to 11 am

Expert Speakers Include Palm Beach Post Editorial Writer Howard Goodman; Joyce Reingold, Former Publisher of the Palm Beach Daily News; Brett Sandala, Founder of Ocean Drive Social; and Brian Williams, Former Managing Editor of the National Enquirer

(West Palm Beach, FL – July 20, 2017) For its fourth major “issues” event this summer, the League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County is inviting the public to a FREE panel discussion on another serious and oh-so-timely subject:

FAKE NEWS
(Alternative Facts or Just Not True)
August 12 in West Palm Beach

This important and informative panel discussion will be held from 9 to 11 am at the Palm Beach Post Auditorium, 2751 S. Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach (the southwest corner of Dixie and Belvedere Road). Atlantis. While there is no cost to attend this event, interested people are encouraged to register in advance online at www.lwvpbc.org.

The expert speakers at this upcoming event include:
+ Howard Goodman, Editorial Writer at The Palm Beach Post
Quote: “Here is a paraphrase from a book by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosensteil, but I believe it: ‘The essence of journalism is a discipline of verification. Anything else is just entertainment, propaganda, fiction or art.’”

+ Panel Moderator Joyce Reingold, Former Publisher of the Palm Beach Daily News
Quote: “I’m looking forward to exploring this urgent issue with our panel of news professionals. So called ‘fake news’ – misinformation, disinformation – is nothing new, but its potential for harm today is unprecedented, as we’re witnessing on an almost daily basis.”

+ Brett Sandala, Founder of Ocean Drive Social, a modern brand consulting firm specializing in social media marketing and online branding
Quote: “The infamous fake news of our last election cycle was not a new phenomenon, but a perfect storm of hyper-partisan politics, social media, and our modern online news culture. Prominent news outlets have edged into tabloidism for years in search of wider audiences and viral content – largely setting the stage for the purveyors of fake news.”

+ Brian Williams, former Managing Editor of the National Enquirer
Quote: “As a former editor of the National Enquirer, I can’t tell you the joy I feel when the New York Times and the Washington Post and network news are all accused of reporting ‘fake news’. What’s next, alien sightings?”

This special presentation by the League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County is underwritten by Lytal, Reiter, Smith, Ivey & Fronrath.

About the League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County:

Happy July and August, 2017!

Happy July and August, 2017!

Getting ready to teach.

It’s that time of year when things start to slow down Around Wellington.  The heat index is a killer right about now, and yesterday it was at 107 degrees.  The equestrian events are not in season, and the kids are home for the summer.  If you’re going to do something outside, it better involve water, or else you might keel over from the heat.

As for me, things are not slowing down.  I’ve decided to make a major career change from being a corporate copywriter to being a middle school Language Arts teacher.  So I’m making trips to the dollar store to find decorations for the classroom and brushing up on books like Treasure Island, Peter Pan and Black Beauty.

Am I crazy to throw myself into a den of 6th and 7th graders?  Quite possibly.  Hormones will be raging.  Bullying might happen.  But at the same time, I wanted to put my heart into what I do.  It’s important to make a difference.  So instead of making tiny changes to the copy on office essentials for print catalogs that no one under 70 years of age will probably read (Hello, there’s the Internet), I’ve decided to share my enthusiasm for writing with kids.  And I must admit, I’m getting excited just in the planning stages.

So what will happen with AroundWellington.com a few of you have asked.  It will keep on keeping on.  THANKS to a tremendously talented staff, including volunteers, I can still manage Around Wellington.  It’s been going strong for 11 years and continues to grow.

For July, we were happy to bring you the story of Eagle Arts Academy and their unique approach to education, infusing arts and technology into learning.  For August, we will have a story about what’s new at the Palm Beach Zoo.  There are a lot of new developments going on there, and it’s literally a “cool” place to be in the summer.

As usual, please check out our many stories brought to you by our AroundWellington team of writers.  THANKS as always to Carol Porter for some great photos of local events – see “Photo Galleries.”  And coming soon, we will have another special video, produced by Monica Kallas of SharpShooter Marketing Group.

Thanks for your support and participation.  And see you Around Wellington!

Sincerely,

Krista Martinelli

Kravis Center Announces New ‘Dream Awards’ for High School Musical Theater

KRAVIS CENTER ANNOUNCES NEW HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATER AWARDS

‘Dream Awards’ Will Send Two Students to New York City to Compete in the National ‘Jimmy Awards’

(West Palm Beach, FL) – The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts is excited to announce its newest arts education program, the Kravis Center Dream Awards: Celebrating High School Musical Theater Excellence.

This new performing arts education initiative for high school students, being launched for the 2017-2018 school year and sponsored by PNC’s Arts Alive program, will be open to all public and private high school students in Palm Beach County. During the yearlong program, which begins in September, Kravis Center theater adjudicators will view and critique eligible musical theater productions at participating schools.

On Sunday, June 3, 2018, student ensemble work and individual students’ accomplishments in musical theater performance will be recognized and honored at an exciting awards event in the 2,195-seat Dreyfoos Hall at the Kravis Center.

“We have always wanted to create a high school musical theater awards program here at the Kravis Center, so we’re thrilled that our Dream Awards are launching this season,” said Judith Mitchell, Kravis Center CEO. “Our community has become the cultural capital of Florida, and these awards are a testament to the mission of the Kravis Center, as well as to the hard work by our local educators to make arts education a priority for our young people.”

At the Dream Awards event, two local student actors – one male and one female – will be selected from among the eligible performers to travel to New York City to participate in the National High School Musical Theater Awards, known as the Jimmy Awards, and represent Palm Beach County while taking part in a weeklong musical theater intensive. The culmination of the intensive will be the Jimmy Awards ceremony performance on the Minskoff Theatre stage on Broadway. All expenses for this student experience will be compliments of the Kravis Center.

During the awards event at the Kravis Center, an inspiring local theater educator and his/her commitment to performing arts education will also be honored.

“We know what art can do, how it changes perspectives, even changes lives,” said Cressman Bronson, PNC regional president for Florida East. “From classical music and fine art to dance and theater, we’re committed to keeping the arts alive in Florida.”

Bronson added that the arts and culture industry in the state of Florida generates approximately $49.7 billion in annual revenues, according to the Division of Cultural Affairs.

The Dream Awards pilot program has three primary objectives:
To provide much-needed enrichment and access for students and drama teachers to learn from theater professionals. By launching this program, the Kravis Center expands the resources available to underserved students and under-funded theater arts programs throughout Palm Beach County schools.
To celebrate the art form of musical theater and to elevate the prominence of our schools’ musical theater programs, helping make our community aware of the fine work that is being produced in our local high schools.
To engage the community and offer performance excellence at an affordable ticket price. This project welcomes family members, students and community members to experience the outstanding work of these young performers while contributing to the development of future audiences for live performing arts in southeast Florida.
Starting in September, Kravis Center theater adjudicators will attend eligible musical performances at each participating school and prepare written evaluations of student performances. The written feedback will then be provided to both the students and directors to enhance the growth of each individual program.

Selected student actors, individually and in ensembles, will be invited to join the cast for the end-of-year awards production. In the spring, these groups will work with a guest stage director, a guest choreographer and a guest musical director to workshop the awards production, which will take place in Dreyfoos Hall on Sunday June 3, 2018 at 7 pm. A group of honorary judges will attend the awards celebration and will select the actor and actress who will go on to the Jimmy Awards ceremony in New York City.

Educators interested in having their theater programs participate in the 2017-2018 Dream Awards are encouraged to contact Miranda Hawkins at the Kravis Center at hawkins@kravis.org or by calling 561-651-4251. Applications to participate are due by September 15th, 2017.
