March, 2012 – Silver Science at the South FL Science Museum

0

March 14th, 2012 from 2-5 p.m. – Silver Science

The South Florida Science Museum presents a special afternoon for adults and retirees to explore space, astronomy and how it really effects your every “day”.  Cost is only $5.00 and includes a complimentary planetarium ticket, refreshments and Museum admission! Special guest, Gary Wasserstein, a retired Board Certified Radiologist, will host a discussion of the science and history of the development of our present day calendar. It’s a complex conglomeration that has developed over millennia using a combination of astronomical cycles, astrology, religious doctrine, superstition and a touch of political intrigue.

First in Palm Beach County to Achieve “Gold” Certification for Going Green

When it comes to going green, Wellington is taking the lead in Palm Beach County. The Florida Green Building Coalition has now designated Wellington a Gold Certified Green Local Government, a distinction that honors counties and cities for achievements in outstanding environmental stewardship.

“This achievement is another way Wellington is demonstrating its commitment to being a great hometown for today’s residents as well as future generations,” Wellington City Manager Paul Schofield said.

To qualify, Wellington met a variety of criteria focused on improving environmental performance including energy use, water, air, land and waste as well as in-house environmental practices, educational activities to improve the environment and incentives and ordinances to foster green practices. Wellington is the first municipality in Palm Beach County to achieve the Green Local Government designation.

The Florida Green Building Coalition will officially present the designation during Wellington’s next Council meeting on Tuesday, March 13th, 2012 beginning at 7:00 pm at City Hall.

I NEED YOUR HELP!!!

On Saturday, March 10th we are having a fund raiser to help a colleague and friend, Isa.  She is a Lymphoma Cancer survivor and she now has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  She had a lumpectomy two weeks ago and unfortunately after follow up testing found out that the lumpectomy was not successful.  She is now meeting with her team of doctors to discuss the next surgery.

We want her to be able to go through her surgery and recovery with peace of mind and strength for herself and her son!  She is a single mom and her son is 12 (her parents are deceased so she has freinds, like us here for her).

Okay…so what do I need from you?

# 3 – I need cash sponsors….$100 to sponsor a table (your company name displayed on a table) or $200 to sponsor an appetizer (your company name displayed along the silent auction tables – more exposure).  Both sponsor levels listed in the event program. (this is going to help cover the costs of the food at the event).
# 4 – If you are not able to join us and would like to make a donation to help Isa with this endeavor in her life Iof course any amount would be great even $5)…please make check payable to Keller Williams Realty (with “Isa” in the memo) and mail to attn:Donna at 8188 Jog Road, ste 101, Boynton Beach, FL 33472.  (Donna handles our fund raising and financials).

March, 2012 – Women in Business Series Features Cornelia Guest

PALMS WEST COMMUNITY FOUNDATION’S

2012 WOMEN IN BUSINESS SERIES

SPONSORED BY IBERIABANK

PRESENTS

“LUNCH WITH CORNELIA GUEST”

The Palms West Community Foundation is pleased to announce that the fashion icon, Cornelia Guest, will be the speaker at the next Women in Business luncheon on Thursday, March 15th, starting at 12 noon, at The Player’s Club in Wellington.  Maureen Gross, Director of Development for the PWC Foundation explained, “Through our Trustee member, Mason Phelps, Jr., we learned that Guest was going to be in town to promote her new line of must-have cruelty-free bags, and she has, graciously, agreed to join us to be a part of our Women in Business Luncheon series.”

Cornelia Cochran Churchill Guest is the daughter of Winston F.C. Guest–a polo champion and cousin of Winston Churchill, and Lucy corneliaguest“C.Z.” Cochrane Guest– the famous American fashion icon.  She is also the goddaughter of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. In 1982, she was named “Deb of the Year”, and in 1986, was named “Deb of the Decade”.  Guest then authored the book, “The Debutante’s Guide to Life”; a lifestyle she was well qualified to write about!

Guest has been passionate about animals and nature since she was a child and her passion is reflected in every aspect of her life–including her philanthropy, animal activism and business enterprises.  She has been able to utilize her notoriety, media attention and professional contacts to support causes near and dear to her heart, like the Humane Society of New York.  Cornelia Guest Cookies is a company she founded in 2009.  These cookies are vegan, and reflect her mission to encourage and inspire people to be conscious of the diet choices they make in their own lives.

Now, her new venture is a line of accessories, under the Cornelia Guest name, that feature beautiful, soft faux leather, “cruelty-free” bags.  All of her products use the tag line—“No animals were hurt while making these products“.  Not only does Guest run her own international company, but she is able to keep her products in line with her core beliefs.  No wonder she was named by Donna Karan as one of the Women Who Inspire!

Guest counts among her many endeavors—acting, fundraising, philanthropy, International ambassador for LaPrairie, a Swiss skin-care company, and being a muse for some of the great fashion designers of our day: Badhely Mishka, Halston, Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera.  Be sure to join us for an inspiring afternoon as Guest shares stories from her dynamic and interesting life!

The 2012 Women in Business Luncheon series is sponsored by IBERIABANK, and the “Lunch with Cornelia” event is made possible by Phelps Media Group, Inc., International and The Player’s Club.  The Player’s Club is located at 13410 South Shore Blvd. in Wellington.  Make your reservations early for this pre-paid event, as it is sure to be a sold out!  The cost is $25.00 for Chamber members and $35.00 for non-members.  For reservations, go to www.palmswest.com, and click on the Women in Business icon, or call Maureen Gross at (561) 790-6200, or email [email protected].

Be a Part of the Festival!

The Royal Palm Art & Music festival is a true community event scheduled for March 9 – 11.  “We are developing activities that will take place during the festival that help to engage our attendees,” said Jaene Miranda, CEO of the Palms West Chamber.  Some of those activities include:

The “King of Wings” Chicken Wing Eating Contest on Saturday & Sunday.  If you love eating Chicken Wings, this is the right place for you.  The winners of the contests receive bragging rights for a whole year.

Are your kids into cooking?  The festival organizers will be presenting an edible art kitchen program on Sunday.  The program is open kids of all of ages.

Do your kids like to play dress up?  Then you may want to enter them in the annual Pirates & Princess Contest scheduled for Sunday noon time.  All contestants take away a prize.

The Royal Palm Art & Music Festival is a dog friendly event.  And, to send that message loud and clear, event organizers have put together the Pet Look-A-Like contest for Sunday.  You and your pet will be judged and prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

Don’t mind water sports?  Well you may want to grab three more buddies and sign yourself up for the Kayak races which will be held on Sunday.  Heat competitions will lead up to the final race of the day.

Information and applications for these festival opportunities are available at www.RoyalPalmBeachFestival.com or call the Central Palm Beach County Chamber office at 561-790-6200.

March, 2012 – Tribute Bands at RP Art & Music Fest

Tribute Bands to Take Stage at Festival on March 10

Stage performances are set to be a major component of the Royal Palm Art & Music Festival.  Not to be missed is the tribute band showcase set for Saturday, March 10.

The showcase begins at 3:40pm with Turnstiles – a tribute to The Piano Man himself.  Turnstiles delivers spot on musicianship, great vocals and a high energy recreation of a Billy Joel Show.  The seven musicians re-create Billy’s classic songs in such a faithful way that will certainly move the casual listener as well as the hard core “Joel fan” to their feet and singing along with all the classics.

In addition, the main stage will feature The Marshall Brothers Band (Allman Brother’s Tribute) 5pm, Sigmund Floyd (Pink Floyd Tribute) 7:30pm, and Storm Riders (Doors Tribute) 8:50pm.

The Chamber works with local volunteers to recruit both amateur and professional bands.  “Music provides the energy to any festival – it sets the mood,” said Jaene Miranda, CEO of the Central Palm Beach County Chamber.  “Our musicians will provide jazz, blues, classic rock, and country.”

Bookings for the event bring out some of South Florida’s top bands including a real life ‘Urban Cowgirl’?  J.D. Danner.  A New York girl who likes to rock out southern style. Her sound is where country meets rock. Often described as Roseanne Cash meets Melissa Etheridge and with a coveted status as a regular performer at the famous Bluebird Café in Nashville, J.D. Danner is not just another girl with a guitar.  She is an artist with a mission to change the world through the power of music.

In addition to the main stage, the festival also includes a community stage which features local performers from area schools, dance studios and after-school programs.

Want to get a full run down on all of the performers for the Royal Palm Art & Music Festival?  Check out the schedule below or visit www.RoyalPalmBeachFestival.com and click on Entertainment.
