(West Palm Beach, FL – April 25, 2013) The Friends of Mounts Botanical Garden will be hosting six fun, horticulturally informative and family friendly public events during May and June 2013.
Urban Farming: Sustainable Backyard Vegetable Growing & Basic Beekeeping
Saturday, May 4 – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Mounts Exhibit Hall A & the Garden
$30 for members; $40 for nonmembers
In this workshop, Mounts horticulturalist Mike Page will take the mystery out of growing backyard vegetables with fewer pesticides. Attendees will discover how to grow summer vegetables in the subtropics and how to best prepare a backyard or containers for next season’s harvest. Along with a tour of the Mounts vegetable garden, Mr. Page will share techniques on site preparation, seedling establishment, planting, maintenance, natural pest control concepts and harvesting. In addition, workshop participants will learn the basics of backyard beekeeping from the Palm Beach County Beekeepers Association.
Mother’s & Father’s Day Gifts from the Garden
Saturday, May 4 – 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Mounts Auditorium, Pavilion & Garden
FREE for members & children; $5 for nonmembers
This fun-filled workshop for children will teach youngsters how to create handmade gifts from the garden. Cost of materials is extra. Pre-registration is required at 561.233.1757.
Connoisseurs Garden Tour & Tea Party
+ Saturday, May 11 – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
+ Sunday, May 12 – 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
$20 for members; $25 for nonmembers
Six private gardens throughout Palm Beach County on Saturday only, Signature Garden and Garden Tea Party Sunday only.

This is a delightful horticultural tradition for Mother’s Day Weekend. Saturday- participants can take one day to visit six private gardens. Sunday – A signature garden, Casa Phippsberger 11 AM – 2 PM and an inaugural Garden Tea Party at Mounts Botanical Garden 2 – 4 PM. Tickets for sale at Mounts and other convenient locations. The ticket price covers both days.
Summer Gardening Strategies
Saturday, May 18 – 9 to 11 a.m.
Mounts Auditorium & Garden
$20 for members; $25 for nonmembers
It’s summertime and the growing will be easier with these sure-fire tips on how to help a garden thrive during the hot, humid season. Participants will receive a checklist of summer survivors and learn about plants that tolerate the heat & humidity.
Parenting in Nature
Saturday, June 15 – 9 to 11 a.m.
Mounts Exhibit Halls A and B & Garden
$10 for members; $15 for nonmembers; FREE for Children
Unplug the kids from technology and get them plugged into nature with these simple ideas for encouraging nature play. Bring the youngsters for garden playtime with 4-H Extension Agent Jonathan Mayer and the pre-screened volunteers. For children pre-K to grade 5 and their guardians.
Tropical Fruit Festival:
Taste of the Tropics
Saturday, June 29 – 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Throughout the Garden
$5 entrance donation
Held in collaboration with the Palm Beach Chapter of the Rare Fruit Council International & sponsored by Whole Foods Market, the annual Tropical Fruit Festival is a culinary journey around the world through delicious tropical fruit. Planned activities include the Whole Foods Market sampling table, the Palm Beach County Extension Master Gardener Booth, Family and Consumer Sciences food displays and more. In addition, fruit and fruit trees will be available for purchase.
