Celebrates

The Opening Of Lake Worth Publix

With a Giant Sculpture of a Mermaid Made from Publix Tin Cans

On Wednesday, April 27, 2011 the Clay Glass Metal Stone gallery at 605 Lake Avenue will begin the construction of a Mermaid made from Publix tin cans to celebrate the grand opening of Publix in Lake Worth.  Artists from the gallery will begin construction using over 1000 cans from Publix and will work feverishly to complete the work by the grand opening the next day.  Construction will take place in the front window of the gallery.  At the end of the project all of the cans will be donated to the Lake Worth Calvary United Methodist Church to be used in their programs to feed the poor and homeless.

Leading the construction project is 81 year MaryEllen Dohrs, gallery artist and the first woman engineer and interior designer in the automobile industry.  She has worked for weeks on a schematic representation of the sculpture calculating the numbers of cans of each size and color needed for the project to succeed.  She is currently building the armature against which the cans will be placed.  Over a dozen artists from the gallery will work under her lead to build the final mermaid.  The public is invited to watch the sport of can stacking

Publix will generously be donating the cans used in the sculpture that will then be donated for distribution to the poor and the homeless as part of a meals program.  On Thursday the 28th of April the entire Lake Worth community will be welcoming Publix to the area.  Stop by the gallery to see the celebratory sculpture in the window.
