Mounts Botanical Garden to Host Five Major Public Events in December & January:

(West Palm Beach, FL – November 28, 2011)  The Friends of Mounts Botanical Garden today announced five fun and informative public events in November and December 2011:

 

Stories in the Garden

Friday, December 9 – 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Mounts Pavilion

Free for both Members and Non-members

Co-hosted by the Palm Beach County Public Library and the Friends of Mounts Botanical Garden, this free program is targeted for children, ages 2 to 5, and includes story time, garden exploration and crafts.  This event is perfect for young nature lovers and their guardians. Rain or shine. Reservations required at 561.233.1757.

 

Holiday Full Moon Stroll

Saturday, December 10 – 5 to 7:30 p.m.

In the Garden

Members $10; Non-members $15 *

This brand new event is perfect for nature lovers and romantics of all ages. Mounts Botanical Garden is opening its gates for an evening stroll along its winding paths. The sun will be setting when the stroll starts and participants can enjoy horse & carriage rides and a live jazz trio as darkness descends. Enjoy the special lighting throughout the Garden, including floating luminaries on the lake, breath in the sweet floral fragrances and share an awe-inspiring star-gazing experience with the Palm Beach Astronomers.

Farm-Your-Backyard Vegetable Garden

Saturday, January 14 – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mounts Exhibit Hall A

Members $30; Non-members $40

Now is the time to begin planning your vegetable garden. Arthur Kirstein, Coordinator of Agricultural Economic Development, will teach this workshop on how to successfully grow vegetables in your own backyard. This program’s focus is on establishing and managing small vegetable projects. Tips on site preparation, seedling establishment, planting, maintenance and harvesting also will be covered. Recommended for the intermediate level gardener. Register early, this popular workshop has sold out quickly in the past.

 

Florida Arbor Day in Palm Beach County

“For the Love of Trees”

Sunday, January 22 – Noon to 4 p.m.

In the Garden

Members Free; Suggested Donation of $5 for Non-members

Come to Mounts and celebrate trees and the importance they have in our lives and world. Various environmental organization will be on hand with activities and exhibits throughout the Garden. Meet Smokey Bear from the Florida Forest Service to learn about fire prevention. Additional activities include Storytime in the Garden provided by the Palm Beach County Library, ceremonial tree planting  of a Paradise Tree and guided tours of the Mounts tree collection, including Florida’s State tree, the Sable Palm. Attendees will receive a complimentary seedling to nurture in their own landscape. Plants from Mounts Nursery Guild will be for sale. About Mounts Botanical Garden:

Mounts Botanical Garden is Palm Beach County’s oldest and largest public garden.  Mounts displays tropical and subtropical plants from around the world, including plants native to Florida, exotic trees, tropical fruit, herbs, citrus, palms and more. As a component of the Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service, and through its affiliation with the University of Florida IFAS, Mounts is the place to connect with Extension Horticulturists, Master Gardeners, the Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Program, and professional horticultural advisors. Mounts also offers a variety of horticultural classes, and garden-related events and workshops. 

 

Located at 531 North Military Trail in West Palm Beach, Mounts Botanical Garden is open Monday-Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. The suggested donation for entry to the Garden is $5 per person.
