were busy running a speed networking event last week when suddenly someone realized a new member was present. Even though there was no red ribbon or official large scissors on hand, an impromptu Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was quickly organized and Ana Melo of Arbonne International was formally welcomed into the Wellington Chamber of Commerce by fellow Chamber members and everyone else who happened to be at Cantina at Polo West.

Ana Melo is a Plant Biochemist and representative for Arbonne International which is based out of Irvine, CA. According to their website, the company is committed to environmental responsibility. Arbonne International strives to minimize their products’ impact on the planet by doing the following: utilize responsible harvesting of botanical ingredients; avoid using endangered plants; utilize packaging designs that use minimal materials and are recyclable after use; use soy based inks on their packaging; keep recycling programs active at all distribution centers.

Besides running an environmentally-friendly business, Arbonne International’s products are said to be pure, safe, and natural. Their product categories include anti-aging, cosmetics, skin and body care, health and wellness. These are all said to be free of harmful ingredients and are vegan-certified.

I asked Ana how she got involved with Arbonne International and she stated that she was born a “healthy nut.” Growing up in Brazil, she was always interested in natural products and unlike other kids her age, she liked to eat healthy natural foods. Ana said that she has always been concerned about toxins in products and even as a child wanted to study more about this topic. So when she got older, she decided to move to the U.S. to attend Florida International University in Miami. She did just that. There she earned her Master’s Degree in Plant Biochemistry.

Soon after, Ana gave birth to a son who was born with a myriad of allergies. She said that he was allergic to artificial colors, perfumes, and fruit. This manifested itself into red rashes, eczema, psoriasis and hyperactivity. “It was the whole package.” she added.

“This was chemical-related. I had to change everything – remove all chemicals in the house – change his diet – everything.” Her son’s condition made her even more interested in studying ingredients used in everyday products and food. She started reading and analyzing all labels closely. “That’s when I got involved with Arbonne International. I was looking for something natural for him. He was my project. And after using those products, over time the problems went away.” Since her son was doing much better and she liked the results of the Arbonne International products, she decided to become a representative for the company.

Ana explained, “All of our products are formulated without gluten. They have no artificial colors, no flavors or perfumes, no Parabens, no mineral oil, no Phthalates (toxic preservatives) and they are dairy- free. Everything is vegan-certified. Everything is made from organic plant extracts and we use a high end technology to develop our products. This is the difference between Arbonne International and other companies. It is very safe for people – even people with cancer. Some hospitals use our shampoo and conditioner. Kids with Autism do well with our products as well.”
