South Florida Theater Review Launches Online

 

On July 26, theater critic Bill Hirschman and arts journalist Lawrence A. Johnson will unveil South Florida Theater Review, designed to be the comprehensive web site with reliable, vetted information and trusted opinion about theater in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

        www.southfloridatheaterreview.com will serve the entire theater community: casual theatergoers wondering what to see this weekend and fervent fans wanting the latest dish on what’s coming months from now, theater professionals seeking word about auditions, producers wanting to let the public know about an added show or last-minute cancellation, snowbirds, natives, playwrights, designers, students and fans seeking links to research resources, even expatriate actors in NYC, LA or on the road hungry for news from home.

 

And, of course, there will be reviews of every professional production throughout the three counties that our time and manpower will accommodate. We’ll take advantage of the web’s immediacy by striving to turn reviews around in 24 to 48 hours. Eventually, we’ll review cast albums, DVDs and shows in NYC that Floridians might want to see, possibly even other regions to compare how our theater compares with theirs.

 

        Once we have ramped up, there will be something new, entertaining and informative to discover nearly every other day.

        Other facets we have planned will include:

·        The most up-to-date calendar of coming events, stretching as far into the future as we have information — with more than just dates, but information about what each production is about so you can make informed choices.

·        A massive list of websites: professional resources, research sites, fan sites, links to podcasts and videos.

·        A directory of contact information for every theater in the region: professional, community and college.

·        Bill’s blog, tentatively called “StageBill,” will provide a comments section that we hope will create a dialog among yourselves and us.

·        Interviews and advances as staffing permits. We’ll also link to videos and photos posted by the theaters.

        We can’t succeed without you as this site grows and evolves. We’ll need your help to keep this as current as possible.

        Please share your news items, let us know as far in advance as possible about schedule changes, tip us to story ideas, suggest improvements.

On July 12th, friends of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® West Palm Beach and supporters of Families First celebrated together at Tall Tales Restaurant at Gander Mountain. Co-owners of the local TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Janelle and Joel Dowley took the opportunity to raise funds for Families First of Palm Beach County, while celebrating their 5th year in business.  Networking, hors d’oevres, education about Families First and door prizes were all part of a fun evening in the restaurant adjacent to Gander Mountain.

Families First works with mothers, fathers and extended families to help make sure that these children are born in good health; receive the attention and nurturing they need to thrive; remain free from abuse; make important early strides in learning and growth; and are ready for future growth, development and success. Wellington Amphitheater Opens and Wellington Aquatic Center Re-Opens

Despite a soggy afternoon, the Wellington area public enjoyed a fun, free afternoon of festivates all centered around the lovely new 3,200 sq. foot amphitheater, located right in front of the Wellington Community Center.  Music, bounce houses and other fun events were sponsored by the Palms West Chamber and the Schumacher Family of GM Cars on July 3rd, 2010. 

 

The Wellington Aquatic Center, also right next to the Wellington Community Center, was re-opened and free to the public for this day of celebration. Participants enjoyed the swimming, water play area and water slides, as well as raffles and “Wellington” rubber duckies.  These two beautiful facilities will be home to many great events in Wellington in the coming years.

KUDOS to Wellington for being touted in the Money Magazine’s Top 100 Places to live!  We are honored to be representing our business community however not surprised Wellington received this honor. What is truly impressive is that Wellington was the only community in all of Palm Beach County to be listed in the Top 100 Places to live and one of only three in the entire State of Florida. Equally impressive is that we have only been a municipality for less then 15 years and we can thank community leaders such as Ken Adams, Kathy Foster and others for having the vision to see the future of Wellington as its own municipality.

 

 

Mayor Bowen, our Wellington Village council and especially the Village staff should be complemented and commended for allowing us to receive this national honor.  As a Chamber we are receiving calls from all over the country and have even appeared on our evening news!

 

The Village of Wellington balances a unique hometown, family atmosphere with an attractive natural environment, recreational, cultural and educational activities with facilities for all ages. Businesses and residents alike enjoy the year round climate that allows the Village of Wellington to maintain its status as one of the nation’s premiere equestrian and business friendly communities.  All while maintaining one of the lowest tax rates in Palm Beach County!!

 

Wellington is an equestrian community and lays claim to outstanding equestrian programs, activities and events, and is known as the “Winter Equestrian Capital.” We are home to the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center and Equestrian Sport Productions. Education is a top priority for families moving to Wellington, and our schools have a reputation of having a high level of excellence. In fact, all of our elementary and middle schools received an “A” rating this past year. In addition, our parks and recreation facilities are outstanding, providing activities for the young and the young at heart with numerous parks and sports programs. We have grown, but we continue to have a small-town atmosphere.

JCC of the Greater Palm Beaches sends team to compete

in annual summer JCC Maccabi Games in Baltimore

 

BOYNTON BEACHThe JCC of the Greater Palm Beaches once again is excited to be participating in the annual JCC Maccabi Games®, and will be taking a dozen teen athletes from Palm Beach County to compete in Baltimore from Aug. 8 through Aug. 13. This summer, almost four thousand Jewish teens from the U.S., Canada, Israel, Mexico, Hungary, and Great Britain will share in the fun of competing, and the pride of being part of a world-famous event that’s considered the “Jewish Olympics” for teens. The other host communities for the 2010 JCC Maccabi Games are: Denver, Omaha, NE., and Richmond, VA.

 

The JCC Maccabi Games have been offering a life- and personality-shaping experience to Jewish teenagers, ages 13-16, since 1982.  At this Jewish mini-Olympiad, each athlete has the chance to participate in one of 15 sporting events, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

 

The JCC of the Greater Palm Beaches delegation, known as the Palm Beach Sharks, will compete in basketball and tennis. The basketball team consists of: Seth Fortinsky, Jake and Chad Gottsegen, Cameron Kaplan, Jordan Paul, Austin Pepper, Sami Sachi, Allan Sadler, and Jake Waltuch. The tennis team members are: Andrew Katzenberg, Alexandra Kaye, and Kevin Paul. The delegation will again be lead by JCC staff member P.J. Abbott, and also includes basketball coach Geoff Stahl.

 

“I can’t wait to get the team to this summer’s JCC Maccabi Games,” says Abbott. “I have witnessed first hand the positive impact the Games have on our team members, and know this is going to be an experience our athletes remember for years to come.”

 

Abbott adds that, “The athletic competition part of the Games is just the tip of the iceberg. The kids are also going to build relationships with Jewish teens from all over the world as well as within our delegation. I can’t wait to watch our area teens embark on this journey.”

 

The Games also promote community involvement, teamwork, and pride in being Jewish.

 

For example, athletes visiting host communities stay with local Jewish families. This “home hospitality” is vital to the experience, representing the extended Jewish family and the value of welcoming the stranger.

 

Also, every set of Games has a volunteer program called Days of Caring and Sharing, when athletes join with local community organizations to work on social-action projects.  Past Days of Caring and Sharing activities have included building homes for the poor, holding carnivals for handicapped children, cleaning parks, and packaging food to be given to the hungry.  The purpose is to teach tikkun olam (repairing the world) by example, so that these young people incorporate these values into their daily lives once they return home.

Cardinal Newman High School Alum Melissa Ortiz joins the

Women’s World Cup under 20 Soccer Team!

 

Melissa Ortiz, Class of 2008 has recently made the Women’s Worldmelissa-cardinalnewman Cup under 20 Soccer Team.  Melissa will represent Columbia where she has been staying since May, in the match which will take place in Germany starting on July 13th.  They will be playing France and Costa Rica in the first round.

 

Cathy Holland a family friend says “We are all so proud of Melissa; she is amazing player so it comes as no surprise to all of us at Cardinal Newman that she has earned this distinct privilege.  She will make our country proud in every way.” 

 

Melissa is a wonderful young lady who excelled on and off the soccer field.  She was extremely active in clubs, her community, her church and she played both school soccer and travel soccer.  Melissa was an academic achiever and received her IB diploma while here at Cardinal Newman High School. 

 

Melissa comes from a very supportive family and has two brothers who played soccer as well and were quite gifted themselves.  Jonathan Ortiz, Melissa’s brother said the whole family is extremely excited and proud of his sister and they will be leaving to join her in Germany to cheer her on!!

 

Crusader Country sends their love and support to Melissa as she competes these next few weeks!!!

Enjoy a five course, five-star meal, prepared by Master Chef Chris Paul from Wild Orchids Fusion.  The night begins with an introduction to the three wines that you will taste throughout the evening, then you will be dazzled by the chef as he creates the most delectable dishes you will ever taste! 

 

Kids Cooking Camps!

July 19th-23rd 9am-Noon $165

July 26th-30th 9am-Noon $165

The week long cooking camp will begin with recipes from South of the Border to Italian on Tuesday and then a Pajama Party on Wednesday where kids should come in their PJs!  Thursday they will learn to create the perfect Back Yard Bash with recipes perfect for a picnic and Friday will be a special day where campers will prepare lunch for the parents.  On Friday, parents please arrive by 11:15am to enjoy the fruits of their labor.  Space is limited to the first 20 registrations.  To register stop by our customer service desk for the registration form and make checks payable to Dianne M Morin Inc.  Checks to be mailed directly to Dianne Morin or visit www.diannemmorininc.com
