JCC continues to collect relief supplies for Haiti

 

 

BOYNTON BEACH/PALM BEACH GARDENS — The JCC of the Greater Palm Beaches in conjunction with Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Fraternity and the American Red Cross  is continuing to collect clothing, non-perishable food, First Aid supplies, and toiletries for the emergency relief effort for Haiti. Haiti is considered the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and was devastated by an earthquake on Jan. 12.

 

The outpouring of donations since the JCC announced its collection effort on Jan. 14 has been far beyond expectations with people from throughout the community continuing to drop off donations seemingly around the clock.

 

The JCC has set up relief supplies collection points at:

 Donations will be shipped to Haiti by Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Fraternity, a nationwide fraternity of professional men and women, in conjunction with the American Red Cross. The first shipment is scheduled to leave Miami on Jan. 26.

 

The mission of the Jewish Community Center of the Greater Palm Beaches is to create a strong Jewish community by providing high quality programs close to where people live that connect people to Jewish life.

The First Annual “All In For A Cure” Charity Poker Tournament and Party to benefit the American Cancer Society 2010 Relay For Life of the Northern Palm Beaches.  The players have begun to line up for the event, but there are still seats available.  Just as a reminder, buy-in for the tournament is $100.00, with $40.00 re-buys.  The doors open at 6:00pm and the tournament will start at 6:30pm, so make sure players are there early to check in.

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT PLAYERS WHO ARE INTERESTED CONTACT ME TO RESERVE THEIR SEATS.  If there is no room left, they will be left out – and we want to make sure anyone who is interested can play.
 
In addition, please remember that this is for non-poker players as well.  We will be having music, food, drinks and raffles throughout the event!

BOYNTON BEACH — The best-selling author of a dozen novels; a pair of TV stars (married to each other); and a popular stand-up comedian also well-known for writing many of the laughs for Seinfeld and other hit comedies, are all coming to Palm Beach County for the winter, or at least a few days of it. Author Chris Bohjalian, who can boast that one of his books was an Oprah Book Club selection; Michael Tucker and Jill Eikenberry, stars of the NBC hit L.A. Law, and comedian Carol Leifer, are scheduled to discuss their latest work as part of the Annual JCC Book Festival.     

 

The schedule is as follows:

 

  • Annual JCC Book Festival Luncheon—presented by Ross JCC, featuring actors Michael Tucker and Jill Eikenberry, 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, Indian Spring Country Club in Boynton Beach.. The husband and wife are best-known for starring roles on the hit TV show L.A. Law, (1986 to 1994). Tucker, with input from Eikenberry, has written Family Meals: Coming Together to Care for an Aging Parent.  Admission is $45 for JCC members, $55 for non-members.   • Laugh Out Loud! An Evening with Comedienne Carol Leifer, author of When You Lie About Your Age, the Terrorists Win. The award-winning writer, producer, and comic discusses her new book, subtitled Reflections on Looking in the Mirror, 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, Ouzo Blue, PGA Commons, 5090 PGA Blvd., Palm Beach Gardens.   • An Evening with Chris Bohjalian, author of Skeletons at the Feast. “Skeletons,” Bohjalian’s 12th novel revolves around three characters fleeing the advance of the Russian Army during the waning months of WWII: Anna, a young woman from a well-to-do Prussian family; Callum, a Scottish POW; and Uri, a Jew passing himself off as a German soldier. These are, in Bohjalian’s words, “Ordinary people coping with trials they had never before imagined; young people coming of age in moments of seemingly unbearable stress; and, I hope, the sorts of moral ambiguity that give us all pause and force us to examine our values.”  The author discusses his work at 7 p.m. Feb. 25, 2010 at the Players Club Restaurant, 13410 South Shore Blvd., Wellington. February, 2010 – New Horizons Helps Haiti

The Student Council at New Horizons Elementary organized a Food and Supply Drive for the earthquake survivors of Haiti.  The school partnered with Missionary Flights International.  During the week of January 25-29, the students collected needed supplies such as snack foods, granola bars, cereal, peanut butter, blankets, towels, washcloths, soap toothpaste, shampoo, and First Aid Kits.  The drive was a huge success.  All of the supplies were delivered to an approved drop-off location, thanks to the help of Student Council member, Trident Nottingham, and his parents.  Together we helped—because we CARED.

FOUNDCARE HEALTH CENTER ANNOUNCES NEW NURSE PRACTITIONER

 

(West Palm Beach, Fla.) FoundCare Health Center at 2330 South Congress Avenue in West Palm Beach recently announced Elsie Remy as Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, according to Bill Quinn, Center Manager. 

FoundCare Health Center offers primary care and preventive services including medical diagnosis and treatment.  Dental services and pharmacy services will be added in the future.    Designed to provide affordable access to quality primary health, dental and preventive care to children and families in Palm Beach County, FoundCare Health Center serves all patients regardless of their ability to pay — including the uninsured.  Eligibility specialists meet with each patient prior to their first appointment to establish a portion of responsibility for the bill, based on household income and using the federal poverty level. 

As the Center’s Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, Remy will be responsible for conducting complete physicals, providing treatment and counseling patients.  She will educate patients and families about preventive care and identify, evaluate, and address disease prevention and health promotion issues while administering quality patient care.

 “Elsie is a great addition to our staff,” said Quinn.  “With more than 19 years of medical experience, she is terrific with our patients.  They love her and many call her ‘their angel.’ Her commitment to their needs is admirable.”

Remy was most recently an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner at Resolution Medical Services, Inc. in West Palm Beach.  She has extensive experience in intensive care, acute and primary care units.  Remy received her BSN from Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY, Master of Science in Adult Health Nursing and Post Masters in Family Practice at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook NY.  She is nationally Board certified. She is a member of The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, American College of Nurse Practitioners and Florida State Nurses Association. She currently resides in Wellington.

Dear Members of the Board, Friends in the Polo Community and elsewhere – In a departure from my usual policies regarding e-mails, I am forwarding you this plea from Louise (Hitchcock) Stephaich. For those of you who may not know who she is and are wondering why this is going to the Polo Community, she is the daughter of Tommy Hitchcock, one of the greatest polo players of all time, a true legend in our sport, (inducted in 1990 our first year of of the Hall of Fame). Louise and her family have not only been continuous supporters of the Museum, but she is a founder of a hospital in Haiti that right now, is one of the only places left operating that can perform surgeries and administer medical aid to those suffering there. She has asked for our help and I cannot refuse this lady who has not only been so generous to us, but has such compassion and dedication to helping others less fortunate, so I am passing this on. Dear All,
This is our plea for help with this enormous catastrophe.  Our hospital is one of the only hospitals to perform surgery.  Our luck is that we are 90 miles north of Port-au-Prince and we are unhurt.  Patients have been arriving in every way possible for surgery and now we have run out of painkillers and antibiotics.  Of course, relief will be slow if ever to come to us from the the U.S. Army, Marines, etc. as we are not in the immediate earthquake zone. Do remember that this hospital is now 53-1/2 years old and has never closed its doors.

TAI CHI CLASSES FOR ARTHRITIS

West Palm Beach, Fla.  (January 20, 2010) – The Mid-East Region of The Arthritis Foundation will offer tai chi classes beginning on February 10th for people affected by rheumatoid arthritis or other rheumatic diseases.  Tai Chi is a fun, safe means of increasing joint activity to help alleviate pain from arthritis.  The classes run for five weeks and will be held at The Arthritis Foundation, 400 Hibiscus Street, located at the corner of Dixie Highway and Hibiscus Street in downtown West Palm Beach.
Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation® is designed to improve the quality of life for people with arthritis using Sun style Tai Chi, one of the four major recognized styles of Tai Chi. This style includes agile steps and exercises that may improve mobility, breathing and relaxation. The movements don’t require deep bending or squatting, which makes it easier and more comfortable to learn.
The program itself consists of 12 movements — 6 basic and 6 advanced — a warm up and a cool down. Once becoming familiar with the 12 movements, the program is designed to provide continual challenge by reversing the direction of the movements.  This program was derived and adapted from the Tai Chi for Arthritis program and includes copyrighted materials belonging to Dr. Paul Lam and Tai Chi Productions.
Adele Gold, who has taught Tai Chi for over five years, will lead the classes.  Gold first began taking Tai Chi classes to help alleviate her own pain from arthritis. Beginner classes are at 10:00 a.m. every Wednesday and Friday, while Intermediate classes (for those who have completed Part 1) are at 11:00 a.m.  Cost for the 5-week session is $66 per person and pre-registration is required due to limited class sizes.

Wycliffe Charities Hosts Annual Outing

 

When residents of the Wycliffe Golf & Country Club community in Wellington, Florida, resurrected Wycliffe Charities in 2007, then President, Marian Rubin made a promise to herself to increase their contribution to local charities in the Palm Beach County as each year progressed. Since its inception in 1993, Wycliffe Charities has donated over $750,000 to local Palm Beach County charitable organizations including: Hospice of Palm Beach County, Home Safe, Caridad Health Clinic, our local Fire Rescue Unit, Palm Beach Habilitation, Mental Health Association of PBC, Amara Transportation, Voices for Children, Hope Project, Quantum House and others.

 

On March 1, 2010, Wycliffe Charities will host its annual outing. In year’s past this event only included a Golf outing; however this year Tennis has been added.  There are various levels of sponsorship, ranging from $100 to $5,000, for those who are looking to participate or just donate.    The day will be full of fundraising events such as a shotgun best ball golf tournament, tennis round robin tournament, lunch, silent auction and raffle.  The proceeds from this event will go to help local health and children’s organizations in Palm Beach County.
