March, 2010 – Mission Impossible…Feeding the Hungry

For Immediate Release

“Mission Impossible”

Feeding the Hungry in Palm Beach County

March is quickly approaching as we prepare to do another round of Mission Impossible, our name for the food drive we do to support Oasis Compassion Agency. The reason we call it Mission Impossible is because of the goal we have set. We will only realize that goal if God is behind the event. Last year, we collected over 7,000 pounds between our two drives.

Our goal for March is 5,878 pounds! (The number comes from Isaiah 58: Verses 7 & 8: “Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelterwhen you see the naked to clothe him, and not to turn from your own flesh and blood. Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.” This is a crazy goal and will take participation from as many people as we can get. I hope you will participate and watch as God moves us toward helping those that need our assistance.

This food is not kept on our property; it is not for our own use. This food will go back into the community and help families that just need some assistance to help them get through a tough time.

Take some time to check out the great ministry Oasis has by viewing their web site at www.oasiscompassion.org. By doing this, it may help you better understand this ministry and communicate it better, either to a possible donor, or someone who needs assistance. Thanks in advance for allowing God to use you to help others! For more information about this food drive, contact me at:  or 561-506-5967.

February, 2010 – Hibel Museum Photo Exhibition

The Hibel Museum of Art and the Florida Atlantic University Presents:

Perceptions of Beauty:

An artistic Photographic Expression of Antique Fans

A new medium of art will make its debut on February 25, 2010 at the Hibel Museum, where art, antiques, fashion and photography collide in a harmonious exhibition featuring the creative expression of newcomer, yet “old soul” Michael Metzner.  The exhibit will showcase the new work of this unique artist who has an instinctive sense of what the Greek Goddess Athena embodied, revealing his own

interpretation of “PhotARTgraphy”!

hibel-perceptions-of-beauty

Michael’s photographic works depict a priceless collection of hand-painted fans from the museum’s rare treasures.  But the captivating element is how the artist photographer tells a story with each photo, involving a model and environmental accents that take the work to another dimension.  As Michael shares his vision: “I express the essence, and transcend it into the extraordinary”, surely the riveting results deliver on that statement.

The collection is comprised of 17th and 18th century hand-painted antique fans, each a work of art unto itself.  There are a variety of sizes, motifs and materials, including Oriental, Egyptian, tortoise shell, Victorian, Italian, ivory and so many more. The museum loaned the collection to Michael for this photographic journey, which is a study of periods, including models handling the fans and wearing costumes from various eras. At times, it seems the model and fan are simply floating in the midst.

The hand fan was an ancient ritual that was often a sacred instrument, used in religious ceremonies and was seen as a symbol of power, wealth and class. The value of fans was sometimes as rare as precious jewels.  Legends evolved around the lore of hand fans, and even the way a fan was held communicated sultry messages in past époques.  Metzner considered all of these aspects of the meaning of fans in his expressions.

Not only with the museum’s art and Metzner’s exhibition tantalize the senses, but the February 25 opening night “Vernissage” of the exhibit will include a Reception featuring artistic creations by Kelly’s Catering to please the palate.  Wines will be provided to lift the spirit of guests, along with the delicate sounds of the harp by world-renowned Charlene Conner.

A special dedication will be made to Edna Hibel in celebration of her 93rd birthday.  The beloved local acclaimed artist whose work has been ever-renewing for over Nine Decades will receive a tribute from her friends and collectors.

This is the first time another artist has been invited to stage a one-man exhibition alongside Hibel’s Masterpieces. Metzner was born in New York, where he lived for thirteen years before relocating to Wellington, Florida five years ago.  Michael graduated high school from Wellington Christian School in 2008 and is currently pursuing degrees in both Biological Chemistry and Art at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College in Jupiter, Florida, and currently has an internship with The Scripps Research Institute

Michael has always been fascinated by the art of photography, but did not get his first camera until Christmas 2007. After spending one year learning about his new hobby, Michael began to take it seriously after he won the Home Grown Artist award in 2009 ArtiGras, a nationally recognized art show, and was featured on ABC as one of the artists selected for this amazing honor. Since then, Michael has continued to enjoy great success in photography. He was a finalist in the Nikon’s “College Photography Competition,” and saw one of his photographs published in the book, Best of College Photography 2009, printed in June 2009. He is currently working on a project called, “Perceptions of Beauty,” which explores the many different points of view that exist on what constitutes “beauty”. In the spring of 2010, Michael will have a number of his photographs displayed in a travelling art exhibit at Penn State University. His self-published magazine, MW, will be printed at some point during the summer of 2010 and will contain all of his work that relates to this conceptual project. Man of many talents, he is also an accomplished pianist.

Michael notes that he has many people to thank for supporting him in his endeavors. He credits his parents and grandparents for being instrumental in his success and supporting him in all his endeavors. Michael’s art professor, Dorotha Lemeh, has encouraged and enabled him to view the world in a completely new way and has truly inspired him.  Michael also says that he has to thank God, both for giving him the strength to conquer each obstacle that comes his way and for creating each and every subject that Michael photographs. “I am truly blessed to have all of these amazing people in my life and I hope that my passion and love for photography and people comes through in my photographs” says Michael Metzner.

The exhibit will be displayed from February 25 through until March 6, 2010. The “Vernissage” opening night reception will be held February 25 from 6:30-8:30 pm at The Hibel Museum, located in Abacoa, Jupiter.  It is tucked back on the corner of University and Main Street on the Florida Atlantic University John D. MacArthur campus. Valet parking will be available.  Admission is complimentary, but proceeds from sales will go to Art Scholarships for underprivileged children. The Hibel Museum of Art (a non-profit 501c3, surviving solely on donations from the public) greatly appreciates all donations. RSVP by February 19 to 561-622-5560.

Ross JCC and Onstage Theatre Company

present dramatic comedy “From Door to Door”

BOYNTON BEACHThe Lore & Eric F. Ross JCC and the locally-based Onstage Theatre Company announce the presentation of the critically-acclaimed dramatic comedy “From Door to Door,” starring local actors and directed by South Florida’s own Steve Rubin and Paula Sackett.

“From Door to Door,” was written by James Sherman, who also wrote the hit comedy, “Beau Jest,” which was made into a film in 2007. The title is a play on words on the Hebrew phrase ‘L’dor V’dor,’ which means ‘From Generation to Generation.’ The play tells the story of Mary, a product of the “Greatest Generation.” As her past unfolds in heartwarming and hilarious scenes with her daughter and mother, it is apparent that three generations of Jewish women in this family have risen to meet expectations and bravely face the future. The New York Daily News called the play, “Hilarious and deeply moving,” and the Chicago Tribune noted that, “Sherman has all the details right…”

Performances are 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday, March 14 and March 21, and 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 2010 at the Ross JCC, 8500 Jog Rd., Boynton Beach. Tickets are $14 JCC members, and $20 for non-members. For tickets, call the JCC box office at 561-736-4751 or 561-740-9000.

A Celebration of Life: Confessions of a Jewish Shiksa” – A Dramatic Gem

By Marla E. Schwartz

An autobiographical gem that will fill your heart with laughter andFrannie Sheridan bring you to tears; tears of joy, reflection and hope that a woman whose parent’s survived the Holocaust, immigrated to Canada and were so persecuted they felt the need to hide their Jewish identities forever by attempting to blend into a gentile neighborhood.

“Confessions of a Jewish Shiksa”.  An oxymoron – yes.  For those who need a translation from Yiddish to English, shiksa is slang for a gentile woman.  So, how can someone be a Jewish Gentile?  Well it’s possible and a play has been written about it and you shouldn’t miss it!

A Celebration of Life: Confessions of a Jewish Shiksa” is a one-woman show that recently played to packed houses at the West Boca Theatre Company at the Levis JCC in Boca Raton last month and will soon open at The Colony Theater in South Beach.

Frannie Sheridan, a West Palm Beach resident wrote and performs in this solo-show with characters based on her family members.  In fact, she dedicates the show to her parents and siblings as she remembers her atypical childhood with sincerity, humor, and deep affection.

The play opens with a haunting selection by composer Michael Yannette, as Frannie walks onto the stage.  “Once upon a time there was a little girl and her family, who were always hiding.  You see both my parents were Jewish, but they raised us as Catholic.  The thing is – they looked and sounded as Catholic as kreplach.”

She begins to talk about her father Bernie, who during Christmas time tried to imitate the Ho, Ho, Ho’s of Santa Claus, but instead would say “Oy, Oy, Oy – do you have problems.”  And people say there’s no such thing as a Jewish Santa.  Bernie Siegal was the myth come true.

There you have the premise of a story about a little girl who had NO idea that her parents were Jews until she found out very innocently one day when she was still a child.  The fact of the matter is how sad it was for her entire family to be living in such a self-imposed environment.  And how brave it is of Frannie to be telling this story of survival and a miracle that she’s even alive in the first place to tell it.

It’s imperative that every Holocaust survivor should be treated with kid gloves because of the unspeakable horrors they witnessed, survived and due to the sheer magnitude of harm done to their psyches is something that people cannot even quantify – and there’s no doubt that the terror they endured is passed onto the next generation.  And Frannie, who is part of the next generation, has admirably told this story from her unique perspective.  Her story is told with such dignity and grace that every theatre, synagogue, church and congregation around the world should be telling it.

You get the idea of the story … but without ruining the entire plot and giving away all the juicy nuggets – the best way to experience it is to see it for yourself.  After the show the stage lights were brought up so Frannie could take questions from the audience.  One audience member asked her whether she lived as a Catholic or as a Jew before writing this play.

“Well, I always thought that my parents were posturing as Catholics when I was a little girl so even though I had closet Catholic experiences, in a sense it was never a persecuted realm for me to live in.  Though I never felt Catholic, because you know when your parents are pretending,” Frannie explained.  “My parents were really visibly and audibly Yiddishkeit (which literally means “Jewishness”, i.e. “a Jewish way of life”, in the Yiddish language), but we were going to church.  I went to a boarding school that was Anglican, and I didn’t have a religious identity until I started writing this play in 1995.  The original version of this play was called The Waltonsteins and that changed my life.”

Shari Upbin marvelously directs the current version of the play.  Shari is also directing the exciting Timeless Divas! Series that’s now on tour as Broadway Live!

Tickets for the production at The Colony Theater at 1040 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach, Saturday March 13, 8 PM and Sunday, March 17, 7 PM are on sale now.  Please call the box office for more information:  305-674-1040, ext. 1; and check out this website for more all things Frannie:  www.FrannieSheridan.com.
