February, 2010 – Our Flame Will Never Extinguish

Our Flame Will Never Extinguish

(A Tribute to the People of Haiti)

By Bito David

In this time of great sorrow
We wish we could find a light to follow
A light that would bright up our path
And appease somehow our wrath

In this time of desperation
We wish we had an explanation
To understand why our people and our nation
Have to go through this great tribulation

The candles that you brought will light up our days
We will carry them in our most precious trays
To guide us with your thoughts and a sublime wish
That this tragedy our flame will never extinguish

In this time of great sorrow
From no one a resolve we will borrow
Deep in our sources we will find the strength
To empower us to walk through the stench

In this time of great sorrow
We have to focus on our tomorrow
With a clear knowledge of our mission
To the adversary never give our submission

These candles will light up our days
We will carry them in our most precious trays
To guide us with your thoughts and a sublime wish
That this tragedy our flame will never extinguish

Editor’s Note: Bito David, a public affairs specialist for Palm Beach County schools, says he is grateful that his mother, father, sister and niece are safe following the earthquake in Haiti. They live in a town called Marin, which is about 10 miles north of Port-au-Prince.

David, who usually assists Creole-speaking parents with their day-to-day concerns, wrote a poem for a candlelight vigil held a few days after the earthquake at Toussaint L’Ouverture High School in Boynton Beach. The school’s student population is 93 percent Haitian. Thank you to David for this moment of inspiration.

February, 2010 – Easy Easy-Bake Recipe

Easy-Bake Oven Cake Using Commercial Cake Mixes

Recipe #147458

A less-expensive alternative to the small boxes.

SERVES 1

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons cake mix, any flavor
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Directions

1. Grease and flour pan.

2. Mix cake mix and milk until smooth. Pour into pan.
3. Bake in preheated Easy-Bake Oven about 15 minutes.

Here’s a review from one of the mothers who tried this:
“Wow! What a great idea. Yesterday my daughter and I used one of the little cake mixes that came with the Easy Bake Oven she recently got and it was less than pretty! Mostly I thought that it didn’t seem to be enough batter; it was hard to spead and actually fill the entire bottom of the pan. So, this morning I came across this recipe and what a difference it made! We doubled it to make a two-layer cake and both layers turned out beautifully! More like the pictures they show on the box. Thanks for the post and the great idea. I’m sure we’ll be using the Easy Bake a lot more than we would have.”
And another review:
“We think it’s delicious and a great way to save money! The mixes that came with the oven were difficult to make smooth and spreadable, but this works great! We used Jiffy mix with good results. We also had success mixing 3 T Jiffy White Frosting mix with 1 teaspoon of hot water. Makes a cheap, yummy icing. Thank you!”

The King’s Academy’s Elementary Experiences ‘The Truth Project’

WEST PALM BEACH – Monday, January 25, 2010 – Each semester at The King’s Academy the elementary students benefit from attending a series of chapel services known as Spiritual Emphasis Week. This semester’s series took place last week and was called “The Truth Project.” The theme was based on the Bible verse in 3rd John 1:4, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”

The first day they learned that telling the truth is not always easy, but it is a daily choice that they need to make.  They learned that each day they should try to be more and more like Christ. So, they need to know what the Bible says about truth.  One example is found in Proverbs 12:22, “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful.”  So the children learned that when they choose to tell the truth, God delights in that decision.

The second day they learned how history relates to truth.  They learned about the story of Pocahontas.  They talked about the differences between the movie, a textbook, and a history book versions of the story.  They saw some similarities, and some differences.  They learned that they needed to examine the things that they read and what they see, because authors take privileges and sometimes stories are distorted.  Whenever they can, they need to check their thoughts with the Word of God.

In the last chapel they learned how they see God in science.  They can see God through creation.  He has designed the world, and it says in Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows his handiwork.” They experienced some great experiments and the final one was so messy that it had to be done outside.

The King’s Academy is a nationally recognized private Christian school serving approximately 1,200 students from preschool through twelfth grade and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Association of Christian Schools International, and the Florida Association of Christian Schools.  The King’s Academy serves students and their families across Palm Beach County at its main campus at Belvedere Road and Sansbury Way in West Palm Beach and its satellite preschool campuses in Greenacres, Palm Beach Gardens, and Royal Palm Beach.
