WELLINGTON — IDA Development, the pre-eminent experts in providing high-quality equestrian products and services to world-renowned facilities and private barns alike, has taken working with animals to a whole new level. While they have primarily worked with horses, IDA Development’s updated list of clients now includes impalas, greater kudus, and scimitar horned oryx — oh my!
IDA Development recently installed 1,600 square feet of Equitan Rubber Flooring in the petting zoo exhibit, exotic hoof stock barn and Veterinary Hospital stalls at Lion Country Safari, a 320-acre family-friendly attraction in Loxahatchee, west of West Palm Beach.
“This was an exciting new project for us and we’re proud of the work we did to make Lion Country Safari more comfortable for the animals,” said Harry Knopp, owner of IDA Development, which is well-known for bringing equestrian properties to life. “The well-being of the animal is our priority, whether it’s a dressage champion, an Olympic jumper, an alpaca or a tortoise.”
Among the species that have tested the flooring are Greater Kudu, Impala, Nile Lechwe, Gemsbok, Common Eland, Nyala, Scimitar Horned Oryx, Blackbuck, Ostrich, Marabou Stork, Aldabra Tortoise, Zebra, Alpaca, Donkey, Goat and Zebu.
“IDA Development was very accommodating and easy to work with,” said Jen Rucker, Assistant Curator at Lion Country Safari. “They were professional, flexible, and willing to work around our animal needs when it came to scheduling. We look forward to more projects with IDA Development in the future.”
The one-inch-thick, cushioned Equitan flooring is safe and seamless which provides excellent shock absorption and is easy to clean. It can be utilized at a major equestrian facility or a world-class attraction such as Lion Country Safari or in a private custom barn.
“From kudu to zebra, IDA flooring has provided solid footing for all of the animals under our care, and it is easy to clean with a hose or pressure washer,” said David Backus, Lead Keeper at Lion Country Safari. “I wish I could put IDA flooring everywhere.”

Lion Country Safari opened in 1967 and was developed with the goal of bringing the African safari experience (then, and now, an expensive and time-consuming trip) to families who would otherwise not be able to experience this type of adventure. The park prides itself on caring for large social groups of animals (including some of the largest herds of zebra, giraffe, and rhino on record in North America) in wide open, natural habitats. The animals roam these multi-acre preserves while guests are confined to their vehicles. The resulting experience is immersive and allows for a very natural environment for guests to see and connect with some of the world’s most iconic species. A visit to Lion Country Safari brings people closer to wildlife in this unique setting and supports conservation efforts to save species. Lion Country Safari is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the gold standard in animal care, conservation, and education, and is Palm Beach County’s largest attraction. On July 2, in Esplanade Park in Ft. Lauderdale, hundreds of people turned out for the We the People March, a march to support inclusion, rally against hate, and support people of color, immigrants, women, LGBTQ+ communities, Jewish people and many others. The march took place despite the inclement weather which dumped rainfall on the marchers.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
On a lightly floured surface, roll a well-chilled puff pastry sheet into an approximate 11 to 12-inch round. Trim edges into a circle shape, and transfer to the lined baking sheet.
Stir cherries, brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, almond extract, and salt together in a bowl until cherries are well coated. Spoon cherry mixture into the center of the pastry, leaving a 2-inch border. Lift up edges of the crust, and fold around, overlapping the cherry mixture.
Whisk egg and water into an egg wash, brush edges of the pastry, and sprinkle with turbinado.
Bake in the preheated oven until cherries are tender and crust is golden brown, 23 to 30 minutes. Warm marmalade in the microwave until melted, 15 to 20 seconds, and drizzle over the cherries to glaze.
Allow to cool for about 15 minutes before cutting into wedges to serve.
Over hill, over dale, Thorough bush, thorough brier, Over park, over pale, Thorough flood, thorough fire I do wander every where, Swifter than the moon’s sphere; And I serve the fairy queen, To dew her orbs upon the green: The cowslips tall her pensioners be; In their gold coats spots you see; Those be rubies, fairy favours, In those freckles live their savours: I must go seek some dew-drops here And hang a pearl in every cowslip’s ear. Farewell, thou lob of spirits: I’ll be gone; Our queen and all her elves come here anon.
Let’s face it, gardening is not for those who are looking for instant gratification. Planting, nurturing, and harvesting fresh fruits and vegetables properly takes time and proper care, but it doesn’t mean you have to wait for months on end to enjoy your favorite fresh produce. In addition to small herbs, there are several vegetable varieties that are known for their quick growth.
If you’re an eager gardener who can’t wait months to enjoy the fruits of your labor, or a beginner looking to start small, here are four plants that you can take from seed to kitchen in just one month.
Radishes
Radishes are the poster child for fast-growing veggies. These vibrant and peppery roots can be harvested in as little as three to four weeks. Their quick growth rate makes them an excellent choice for quick gardening. Radishes thrive in cooler weather, so you can sow them in early spring or fall for the best results. Make sure your garden has full sun exposure and loamy soil before sprinkling your seeds outdoors. With a variety of colors and flavors available, radishes are speedy vegetables when it comes to gardening and offer both culinary versatility and appeal.
Salad Greens
If you are a fan of fresh and crisp salads, you’ll be pleased to learn that leafy greens are fast growers. Salad greens, like lettuce, spinach, arugula, and kale, can be harvested within a month of sowing. Opt for loose-leaf varieties as they tend to mature faster than head-forming ones. Sow the seeds in rich, well-drained soil and provide regular watering to ensure continuous growth and to eliminate any bitterness. By harvesting the outer leaves of plants like spinach and kale while leaving the inner ones enact, you can enjoy multiple harvests through the season without replacing the plant. When planting in the spring, you’ll only have to wait two and six weeks before you’ll have fresh greens perfect for any salad.
Baby Carrots
While traditional carrots can take a few months to grow, baby carrots are a quicker alternative. These smaller varieties are harvested when they are still young, typically around 30 days after planting. Baby carrots are ideal for container gardening and can even be grown in shallow pots or boxes. Ensure that the soil is loose and well-drained to encourage healthy root development for a perfect harvest.
Green Onions
Green onions, also known as spring onions or scallions, are a staple in many cuisines and are incredibly easy to grow. Sow the seeds two inches apart in rows in moist, well-drained soil, and within a month’s time you can start harvesting the young shoots. This low-maintenance allium is perfect to plant in full-sun gardens during the late summer months. Simply cut off the green tops and leave the white base to reuse for regrowth so you can enjoy a continuous supply of fresh green onions the whole season.
Gardening does not always have to be a waiting game. These fast-growing veggies can satisfy your green thumb and enjoy the rewards of homegrown produce in just a few weeks. Whether you’re a novice gardener or an experienced enthusiast, incorporating fast-growing veggies into your home garden is a great way to see quick results and keep your motivation high. So, grab your seeds and embark on a journey to enjoy the delights of freshly harvested vegetables in no time!
