The Arc of Palm Beach County Receives Grant for Community Inclusion Program

0

Riviera Beach, Fla. (February 17, 2023) – The Arc of Palm Beach County aims to build acceptance and inclusion for all children to help them thrive in the community. Thanks to a continued partnership between The Arc and Prime Time Palm Beach County, youth with disabilities will continue to have improved access to high-quality experiences in after-school and summer programs.

The Arc’s Community Inclusion Program coaches, supports, and provides training to 514 out-of-school time (OST) practitioners each year to ensure that every child can participate in OST programs alongside their peers. The program focuses on how to implement interactive activities and strategies that complement the strengths and abilities of all youth. Through the effective use of visuals, person-first language, activity design, and room setup, practitioners foster an environment that encourages communication and enhances social-emotional wellness.

“The Community Inclusion Program gives practitioners the tools and skills needed to promote the inclusion and acceptance of all youth in the community,” said Kimberly McCarten, president and CEO of The Arc of Palm Beach County. “When children with disabilities can share their unique talents and interact positively with their peers and adults, other youth also benefit from the healthy social relationships built through understanding and trust.”

The Community Inclusion Program is made possible with support from Prime Time Palm Beach County, which receives significant funding from the Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County. Prime Time has supported The Arc for nearly 20 years. This year, the program will support an additional Community Inclusion Specialist, enabling The Arc to coach more practitioners and enhance the program’s impact.

Mechanical Bull Riding Competition Buck Off Challenge Returns to Benefit Southeast Florida Honor Flight

Wellington, FL (February 13, 2023) – Vietnam veterans Ramon Silvacoll, Fred Quan, Ernie Zimmerman, and Bob Nappi profoundly appreciated their recent emotional trip to Washington, D.C. as part of the Southeast Florida Honor Flight.

The quartet agreed that the positive reception they received in the capitol and returning home to Palm Beach International airport was the polar opposite of when they returned to the U.S. after their service ended.

“The Honor Flight made me feel like a brand-new person,” said the 77-year-old Silvacoll, who served in the Marines. “It was such a beautiful thing. It’s a great organization.”

Nappi, who joined the Navy before he turned 17 years old, was surprised at the reception the veterans received both at the Washington, D.C. airport and Palm Beach International.

“Honor Flight gave me back the feelings that I had lost for years,” said the 71-year-old Nappi. “When you get treated the way we were treated when we came home, you didn’t want to think about it. I buried it. Not too many of my family knew about anything so it was easy until I blew up and exploded. The Honor Flight gave me everything that I lost. It takes veterans from a place in a hole and puts them on a cloud. The veterans that go on Honor Flight come back as new people.”

The Stuart-based Southeast Florida Honor Flight is an all-volunteer, 501c3 non-profit organization that flies World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans from Palm Beach International to Washington, D.C. four times a year free of charge to visit the memorials built to honor their service and sacrifices.

Each flight costs about $140,000 and are completely funded through donations, according to Chairman Janet Hoose. The next flights are scheduled for April 15 and May 27.

They hold several fundraisers throughout the year and the largest is the Buck Off Challenge, a family-friendly mechanical bull-riding competition on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. on the boardwalk at the original Wellington Community Center.

A limited number of individual VIP reserved seats are available for $75 and includes close-to-the-action seating, dinner and a cash bar. There is free general admission, and guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs.

To register a team or purchase tickets, visit https://seflhf.tofinoauctions.com/buckoff.

Zimmerman served in the Army and had taken his daughters to Palm Beach International to welcome home veterans from previous Southeast Florida Honor Flight trips.

“Honor Flight was one of the best things in my life, other than when my children were born,” said Zimmerman. “The volunteers are the greatest people I ever met in my life. They’re fantastic. When we got to Washington, the people treated us great. The people who weren’t involved in the organization, when they saw what we were wearing, they treated us like war heroes. When we came home from Vietnam, it was nothing like that. They treated us like the scum and the garbage of the earth. To be treated so good, even though it’s 50 years later, it makes us feel so good. For a veteran, especially a Vietnam veteran, it’s one of the greatest things in the world.”

Four-person teams compete in the Buck Off Challenge, where individual rides are scored by a panel of celebrity judges and totaled to determine the winning team. Riders are scored on their ability to stay on the bull while always keeping one hand in the air and the style of the ride. Higher scores may be achieved for character, team “spirit” and costumes. Prizes are awarded to the top three teams.  There will also be prizes for Most Entertaining Team, Highest Scoring Individual, Highest Scoring Youth Rider (12 and under) and Highest Scoring Rookie Rider.

The entry fee is $100 per team.

The Buck Off Challenge is being co-sponsored by the Village of Wellington and Signature Sponsor, philanthropist Dr. Shamser Singh of Port St. Lucie. Other major sponsors include philanthropists Sanjiv Sharma and Nadine Allen of Highland Beach, Madison Sport Horses, IDA Development, Carolex Stables, Travis Laas, Triple Crown Group, IDA Farm, and Pro Plumbing and Gas. Additional supporters include Vitas Healthcare, All Pro Pools, Red Mile, and Heaven Aire Air Conditioning. Our gracious food sponsors are Bolay – Wellington, Bonefish Grill – Wellington, and PDQ – Wellington.

Quan was a platoon leader in the Army and believes that veterans should take advantage of the Southeast Florida Honor Flight services and is thankful for the support through the business community and individuals to make these trips happen.

“I would totally recommend that (veterans) should go because it is a really inspiring thing that your efforts during the war were appreciated,” said the 76-year-old Quan. “It was an honor (to serve). It really was an honor.”

Class size limited to 12 adults; all classes are nonrefundable.

This series of four painting workshops is focused on capturing the splendor of foliage. Deborah Bigeleisen has a comfortable approach to teaching and will demonstrate a variety of techniques. She will explore the elements of composition, color, and technique, and some fundamentals of color theory. Students will work from a reference that inspires them. Students should bring several photographs or (other artists’) paintings of foliage that inspire them. The purpose of this is to give the student a ‘road map,’ a direction or a visual image of what they are aspiring to paint. Students might consider taking photographs at Mounts Botanical Garden prior to the first class – think about framing your composition through the camera lens. The variety of styles adds excitement and energy to the class, and everyone learns from one another. It is advisable to print out reference pictures on photo paper or on a laptop to capture a larger image in more vivid colors; cell phones are not recommended because the image is too small and does not stay visible indefinitely. This series is well suited for students of all levels working in oils or acrylics. For any questions contact Deborah Bigeleisen at info@deborahbigeleisen.com.

Liberty Senior Living Will Hold its VIP Grand Opening and Ribbon-cutting Celebration of Wellington Bay Senior Living

Wellington, FL-On Wednesday, February 22, Liberty Senior Living will hold its official VIP grand opening and ribbon-cutting celebration for its new luxury rental senior living community, Wellington Bay. Identified by Money Magazine as one of the top 100 places to live, Wellington is among Florida’s most vibrant and popular suburbs.

The event will feature remarks from leadership and area dignitaries, a sampling of Wellington Bay cuisine, an official ribbon-cutting, and self-guided tours.

Wellington Place, a rental senior living community, features luxury independent living options, including upscale apartments, garden flats and villas. Wellington Bay offers peace of mind by providing assisted living and memory care in its Lisbet Health Center.

Like other Liberty Senior Living communities, Wellington Bay is designed to provide residents with luxury amenities and concierge services. The community is located on 40 acres boasting expansive grounds and trails with outdoor recreational areas, including pickleball and bocce ball courts and an outdoor zero-entry pool. Wellington Bay has multiple fine and casual dining venues and lounges. Its 65,000-square-foot clubhouse includes an indoor pool, spa, library, movie theater, meditation room, club room, art room, and more.

“Wellington Bay is an elegant and vibrant senior living community with amenities similar to those of an upscale, all-inclusive resort. The best part is that you never have to leave in order to go home,” said Dean Dellaria, Corporate Director of Sales and Marketing for Liberty Senior Living.

“Liberty Senior Living, along with our parent organization Liberty Healthcare Management have a prestigious history in the southeast. For almost 150 years, we have been helping people manage their healthcare and residential needs,” said Dellaria. “We are excited to add Wellington Bay to our portfolio of communities.
