Stanley Jordan Returns
Be it bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits, to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works—solo or with a group—fan favorite Stanley Jordan can always be counted to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected. Since 1985, his fast-track acclaim was his mastery of a special technique on the guitar’s fretboard, Instead of conventional strumming and picking, Jordan’s innovative “touch technique” is an advanced form of two-handed tapping, and he can even simultaneously play two different guitars. A four-time Grammy nominee, he has performed in over 60 countries and numerous festivals, including the Kool Jazz Festival, the Concord Jazz Festival, and the Montreux International Jazz Festival. His recording of Morning Desire with Kenny Rogers was America’s Number One country song in 1986; performed with Quincy Jones, Benny Carter, and Dizzy Gillespie; and has even jammed with the Dave Matthews Band.

Saturday, 11 am to 12:30 pm
$10 for members; $18 for nonmembers
Registration is required; class size is limited to 15 adults.
If you recently moved to South Florida from a northern state, you may have noticed that things are “just a tad bit” different down here. While we love being so close to the tropics, growing plants in a place that seemingly hosts just about every bug known to man, only has two main seasons (i.e. “hot” and “hotter”), and sandy soil that absorbs water faster than aShamwow, might present challenges even for an expert gardener. Learn which types of plants thrive in this climate, how to improve your soil quality, plants that are ideal for sun/shade or a little bit of both, and some attractive alternatives to what you’re used to seeing up north. Conquer your fears and let’s do gardening the South Florida way. Class will be led by Nada Vergili.
Member Prices: $40 Family Ticket (good for 2 adults/2 kids); $20 for individual adult tickets; $3.50 for ages 6-17; free for children under 6.
Nonmember prices:$50 Family Ticket (good for 2 adults/2 kids); $30 for individual adult tickets; $5 for ages 6-17; free for children under 6.
Show yourself and your family members some love with this health and wellness day of adult and kid-friendly activities and classes. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FREE Public Art Exhibit “The Art of Florida’s Highwaymen” at Wellington Community Center, February 12-13 Wellington is excited to announce the return of a FREE public art exhibit “The Art of Florida’s Highwaymen” to the Wellington Community Center (12150 Forest Hill Boulevard). The exhibit will be on display for public viewing on Saturday and Sunday, February 12th and 13th, with presentations each day at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. A key member of the Highwaymen, R. A. McLendon, who began his painting career in 1955, will be painting live on site. A free opening reception with light refreshments is scheduled for Saturday, February 12th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
Who are the Highwaymen?
In the late 1950s, during the Jim Crow era of the south, a small group of African American artists from the Ft. Pierce and Vero Beach area started a business venture during a time where employment opportunities available were most likely low-paying, minimum wage jobs.
Eventually, the group numbered twenty-six self-taught artists. Unable to display and sell their work through traditional channels such as galleries and art agents, they traveled the roads selling their paintings to business owners, real estate brokers, lawyer’s offices, banks, and others along the way. This unconventional sales method earned them the name of “The Highwaymen” sometime in the mid-1990s. For over 60 years the group captured Florida’s natural beauty in an estimated 200,000 paintings, depicting striking views of backwoods scenes, breaking waves, palm-lined beaches, and rivers, to name a few.
The Highwaymen have been featured in the NY Times, on National Public Radio, and were inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004. Their work is on display in the White House and Florida Governor’s mansion, in addition to countless homes and offices across the country.
