KRAVIS CENTER ON “RED ALERT” IN SUPPORT OF ECONOMIC RELIEF TO LIVE EVENTS INDUSTRY

Kravis Center joins local event venues in Palm Beach County which will light up in red on September 1

CAPEHART

(West Palm Beach, Fla.) – The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts will illuminate in red on Tuesday, September 1 from 9 p.m. to midnight in support of economic relief to the live events industry. More than 1,500 buildings across North America will join the social media movement to raise public awareness that this industry, and all its workers, is on “Red Alert,” since most have been out of business since March.

In addition to the Kravis Center, a number of other major businesses in Palm Beach County will light their building red including The Breakers, Flagler Museum, the Historical Society, the Palm Beach County Convention Center, Palm Beach Dramaworks and Rosemary Square.

“For more than 28 years, we have served as an economic catalyst to the region, contributing an estimated $750 million to the local economy,” said Judith Mitchell, Kravis Center CEO. “Because of Covid-19, we had to shutter our doors to not only stage performances but also to other civic and non-profit events hosted here which total more than 1,400 a year at the Kravis Center alone.”

The social media movement, #WeMakeEvents #RedAlertRESTART and #ExtendPUA, represents a major call to action, imploring the US Congress to pass the RESTART Act (S.3814) as quickly as possible, offering economic relief to the live events industry, which has been stalled for months due to the pandemic, putting millions of people out of work. Additionally, the movement is to support ExtendPUA.org in their efforts towards continuation and extension of the Pandemic Unemployment Act to provide relief to those without work due to the virus.

“As performances, concerts, trade shows and other live events remain closed, or open on a very limited basis, the entire industry has been impacted – from performers, to technicians, rental companies, florists, stagehands as well as audio visual,” continued Mitchell. “Even our local restaurants and hotels suffer when our stages and event spaces are dark. This is an opportunity to demonstrate – in red – the impact these businesses have on our local economy.”

The Kravis Center is a not-for-profit performing arts center located at 701 Okeechobee Blvd. in West Palm Beach, FL. The Center’s mission is to enhance the quality of life in Palm Beach County by presenting a diverse schedule of national and international artists and companies of the highest quality, by offering comprehensive arts education programs – serving nearly 3 million students since its inception; by providing a Palm Beach County home for local and regional arts organizations to showcase their work; and by providing an economic catalyst and community leadership in West Palm Beach, supporting efforts to increase travel and tourism to Palm Beach County.

Palm Beach County Food Bank $50,000 Matching Campaign in Full Swing through August 31

PALM BEACH COUNTY FOOD BANK $50,000 MATCHING CAMPAIGN IN FULL SWING

Campaign That Benefits Lois’ Food4Kids Program Continues Through August 31

(Lantana, FL.) – Palm Beach County is the 10th-largest school district in the country, and more than 60 percent of students qualify for a free or reduced-priced lunch. For many, breakfast and lunch at school may be the only meals they eat. Through the Lois’ Food4Kids program, the Palm Beach County Food Bank serves more than 3,600 children during the weekends and summer to help fill nutritional gaps that children face during those times. Through the end of August, the Food Bank is calling on the public to assist them in fulfilling a $50,000 matching grant initiative from local philanthropist Lois Pope that benefits this vital namesake program.

Palm Beach County Food Bank Volunteers Packaging Food for Lois Food4Kids Program

Supporters can donate to the campaign in two ways – directly to the program through the Food Bank’s website and also through social media. Pope will donate $1 each time an individual “likes” or “shares” her posts about the nonprofit organization and specifically its Lois’ Food 4Kids program.

“No child should ever go hungry, here in Palm Beach County or anywhere else in this country,” said Pope.  “Those of us who are more fortunate have a responsibility to help ensure that these children have access to nutritional meals on a daily basis, especially since schools are now closed.  So, I invite others – in fact, I urge others – to join me in this vitally important effort.  And it’s easy to do so with this new social media campaign.”

Earlier this year, Pope also made a donation of $1 million to the Food Bank to support and expand its Food4OurKids initiative for children, which was then renamed in recognition of her charitable gift.

“We want to thank Lois Pope for her continued generosity,” said Marti LaTour, Board Chair for the Palm Beach County Food Bank. “Even before COVID-19, one in five children in the county was going to bed hungry on a nightly basis. Through the Lois’ Food4Kids program, we are able to provide nutritious meals during the summer and weekends to thousands of students. There is an enormous need to fill this food gap and we invite the community to take part in this campaign that will help so many children in Palm Beach County.”

With the COVID-19 pandemic, the Palm Beach County Food Bank now has more than doubled its food distribution efforts as more people are left without jobs and income. In the year ended June, the Food Bank procured more than 10 million pounds of food from grocery stores, restaurants, food distributors, wholesalers and other sources, and provided it to almost 200 local community partners and programs, including food pantries, soup kitchens and residential housing programs. However, in June alone, the Palm Beach County Food Bank distributed 2,713,048 pounds of food.

Pandemic Perspectives Course Offered at No Cost to Community

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. – Palm Beach Atlantic University is launching a free, not-for-credit course: Pandemic Perspectives.

“In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, dashboards and data are constantly changing, and interpretation of the most recent information is difficult at best. That’s partly due to an absence of context,” said Dr. Jeff Lewis, dean of the Lloyd L. Gregory School of Pharmacy.

This course takes a step back from the daily numbers of the COVID-19 pandemic and presents a broader, more contextualized view of pandemics — their social, medical and economic impacts, history, management and the manner in which a society recovers.

“We’ve assembled a roster of experts from our incredible, award-winning faculty in hopes that we might serve our community well during these challenging days, putting this present crisis in perspective,” Lewis said.

The course launches Sept. 1, and is open to the public. No academic credit will be offered. Those who enroll to obtain professional development credit will pay $15, which includes documentation.

The course is free to everyone else. View the course outline and register here.

Palm Beach Atlantic University is a private, independent university offering undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees, with campuses in West Palm Beach, Orlando and online. The University is dedicated to the integration of Christian principles to prepare students for learning, leadership and service.
