Grandma’s Angels are thrilled to announce Olivia Knowles, founder of Olivia’s Hot Cocoa Stand, as their featured speaker at their 9th Annual Holiday Luncheon on November 19th at the Sailfish Club. Olivia, now 14, began her remarkable journey in philanthropy at just 6 years old when she set up a hot cocoa stand to raise funds for “children who did not have as much as she did.” She and her friends proudly raised $81 in that first year, and the tradition has grown every year since, transforming into a vibrant community event that draws neighbors, friends, teachers, classmates and even strangers, all united in the spirit of giving.
The annual event, which benefits Grandma’s Place, an emergency shelter for children in Royal Palm Beach, FL, has blossomed into a festive family night filled with baked goods, hot cocoa, a chance to visit with Santa, and a neighborhood scavenger hunt to find the best holiday lights. Olivia’s passion and the community’s support have been instrumental in the event’s success; together, they have raised over $22,000 to support this vital organization.
Olivia’s motto when planning her event with her family each year is “Small things turn into BIG things when we do them TOGETHER” This event exemplifies how one person’s small gesture can grow into a cherished tradition that changes lives. Join us and be part of the difference.
“We are incredibly proud to have Olivia speak at this year’s event,” said Joan O’Connell, Board President of Grandma’s Place. “Her dedication is inspiring, and her story shows the power of compassion and community.”Grandma’s Angels 9h Annual Holiday Luncheon is being held on Tuesday, November 19th at the Sailfish Club. WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (November 6, 2024) – More than 220 donors and supporters of the West Palm Beach Library Foundation enjoyed an elegant, entertaining evening at the annual Food for Thought Dinner, held November 2 at The Beach Club, Palm Beach. The event raised a record-breaking amount of revenue to fuel the Foundation’s mission.
“Event Chair Melissa Sullivan and her committee planned a lovely evening in which guests engaged in lively conversations with 23 remarkable Table Hosts, while enjoying a sumptuous dinner,” said Steven A. Mayans, Chair of the Library Foundation Board of Directors. “The funds raised support the life-changing programs and services offered through the Mandel Public library of West Palm Beach.”
“I love the work of the Mandel Public Library and believe it is vital for everyone in the community to have access to the programs provided for all ages,” stated Melissa Sullivan, who also was a Platinum Benefactor, “but especially for the children, since reading is such a critical life skill.”
The evening began with a cocktail reception in the Ocean Lounge overlooking the Atlantic Ocean while guests enjoyed cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres that included Brie with Candied Walnuts & Pear Tart, Smoked Foie Gras with Peach and Basil, Pulled Pork with Cornbread, and Tomato Soup Shots with Mini Grilled Cheese.
While conversing with their chosen host, guests dined on a first course of Mixed Greens with Port Wine Poached Pear, Candied Pecans, Goat Cheese, and a Port Wine Vinaigrette. The main course was a duo entrée of a Petite Filet Mignon with Cabernet Thyme Reduction, and a Potato Dusted Grouper accompanied by a Pommes en Feuille de Brique and a Haricot Vert Bundle. A Flourless Chocolate Cake with Passionfruit Sauce was the perfect ending to the gourmet dinner.
“The evening’s guests were greatly inspired by the remarks of the Foundation’s special guest speaker, Brad Meltzer, who spoke about building our legacy through how we interact with others,” remarked Dean Dimke, Chief Executive Officer of the Library Foundation. Named as both “America’s Historian” and one of “Hollywood’s 25 Most Powerful Authors,” Brad Meltzer is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Lightning Rod and twelve other thrillers. “His presence contributed significantly to the success of our premier fundraiser,” Dimke added.

Tequesta, Fla., (November 5, 2024) – Lighthouse ArtCenter (LAC) is pleased to announce the reopening of its newly renovated 3D building at 395 Seabrook Road, Tequesta, FL 33469. This extensive year-long renovation will enhance the creative experience for students of all ages and skill levels, instructors, and the local community.
The upgraded building features an expanded roster of classes and instructors, offering programs from introductory pottery wheel lessons to advanced hand-building techniques. These enhancements will allow LAC to host more visiting artists and introduce new ceramics offerings during summer camps for children, promoting artistic development within the community.
“We are incredibly grateful to our contributing LAC Board Members, community members, and an anonymous grant that made this project possible,” said Jeni Licata, Executive Director. “The community interest has been strong. Registration for classes in the newly renovated building is open, and several classes are already full.”
Originally built in 1973, Lighthouse ArtCenter purchased the building in 2019 from Jupiter Medical Center after leasing it for about 20 years. The acquisition followed a whirlwind fundraising campaign, including benefit concerts from former Metallica bassist and local supporter Jason Newsted.
The newly renovated 3D studio will empower students to create a variety of projects, including abstract and figurative sculptures, mugs, teapots, and platters. With classes available during both day and evening hours, participants can choose from 8-week courses, shorter multi-day workshops, and special events like Wine Down Wednesday and Select Fridays from 6 to 8 pm, fostering a fun and communal learning environment.
“The instructors bring a wealth of diverse expertise to the table, and now they have a state-of-the-art facility that perfectly complements their skills and techniques,” said Director of Ceramics and Sculpture Chad Steve. “I am confident that both students and faculty will produce their finest work yet in the coming year.”
Key renovations include the replacement of a 30-year-old kiln with a brand-new reduction kiln, which can accommodate larger student projects and expedite the return of finished artworks. The installation of hurricane-impact windows, insulation, air-conditioning, a new roof for the kiln pad, and upgraded flooring ensures that the studio is equipped to offer year-round classes in a safe and comfortable environment.
Lighthouse ArtCenter has been a cornerstone of the visual arts in northern Palm Beach since 1964, inspiring and connecting individuals through vibrant exhibitions and educational programs. Annually, LAC serves over 20,000 visitors and supports a diverse community outreach initiative that brings the benefits of art to all. Registration is open for classes and workshops. “Sandi has come to be a West Palm Beach holiday hallmark,” said Mary Pinak, community events manager for the City of West Palm Beach, who was involved in creating the unique holiday celebration. “Fans of Sandi come from far and wide to enjoy her magical light and music shows, and this year, we’re making Holiday in Paradise the destination for ‘Your Holiday Happy Place,’ encouraging the community to leave behind their personal, professional and political worries and spread holiday cheer through the rest of the year.”
This year’s Holiday in Paradise theme is “Sandi Shares Harmony.” While traveling during the off-season, Sandi met Harmony, the leader of a Happy Herd of Llamas, who inspired the theme. Harmony’s herd is aptly named: NOdrama Llama, NOprob Llama, Llamaste, Fa-la-la-la-Llama, LlAmour, LlAmazing, Llama Mia, and Dolly Llama. The harmonious crew will be sculpted at the base of Sandi and along the Waterfront, where the four 25-ton smaller sand sculptures are displayed. Sandi’s usual cast of characters will also return, including Hope, Merry the Mermaid, and Duke.
The month-long celebration will begin on the night of the Clematis by Night Holiday Tree Lighting. The festivities include synchronized nightly music and light shows of Sandi and the surrounding area through Tuesday, Dec. 31, from 6 – 10 p.m. (shows will be extended on New Year’s Eve through midnight). The festivities will also include lots of free and affordable, family-friendly events throughout the month.
Since her debut in 2012, Sandi has received numerous international and regional awards and accolades, including “Best New Event” and “Best Event within an Existing Festival” by the International Festivals and Events Association, “Most Innovative Project” by the Florida Festivals and Events Association and a Henry Award from VISIT FLORIDA. Sandi has been featured in/on The Huffington Post, Thrillist, CNN, Martha Stewart, Travel + Leisure, and The Ellen Show.

Wolverine Theatre Company presents Radium Girls, a stage play by DW Gregory, at Wellington Community High School for their Fall 2024 performance, under the direction of Mrs. Cassandra Truelove. Show dates are Thursday, November 7th through Saturday, November 9th, with curtains up at 7:00 PM. This is Mrs. Truelove’s third production since she began teaching at the school last year, when under her direction, the theater students brought the house down with the unforgettable Trap, a play by Stephen Gregg and Alice by Heart, a Musical by Jessie Nelson and Steven Sater.
When arriving to interview the cast and crew, I expected some candid quotes and a brief synopsis of the show. What I got was the story of how much being a “drama kid” meant to the students.. I started by talking with the Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager, and Sound Technician, then moved on to have discussions with groups of cast members, and the conversations overlapped, intersecting themes of friendship, a sense of belonging, and being a part of something where the memories will last a lifetime.
To begin, I was astounded by the professionalism exuded by the backstage crew. A Senior named Emily, the Sound Technician, said she was originally inspired to do lighting because of her older brother. Then Mrs. Truelove encouraged her that she had what it takes to be the Sound Technician so she took a leap of faith. Why does she keep doing it? She says it’s “the rush to stay on script with everyone on and off the stage throughout the production. Plus, the memories.”
The Assistant Stage Manager, another Senior, named Addis-Addijh, says this is her first time in the role. Last year she helped out a lot backstage with both productions and “sort of just hung out and thought theater was fun.” She found a home among the theater kids. This story moved me the most among the students I interviewed. Addis-Addijh mentioned relocating from Broward a year before and not knowing anyone. She instantly clicked with her drama family and is all in this year behind the scenes.
Finally, the Stage Manager, a Junior student named Camila, is in her third year in this important role, including 8th Grade at Wellington Landings Middle School. She has a certain energy about her and you just know the production is in good hands. When asked if she just always knew this was something she wanted to do, she said the theater teachers encouraged her to do it. But is encouragement alone enough to keep doing it? Why keep going back? Camila told me “I’m an adrenaline junky. I like the rush of everything going on around me. In the beginning nobody knows what’s going on, and I love to see how it all comes together in the end. This is also really a good outlet for me.”
So what can you expect from this performance? I tried to pry details from the cast members about any teasers to share with the audience. Last year’s shows were so full of unexpected twists and turns, so I hoped the students would divulge some secrets. But they were reticent. Just the facts, ma’am. They gave character names and how they fit into the general storyline, but beyond that they said to get a ticket and come see the show! I will tell you this about the Wellington High School’s Theatre Department’s production of Radium Girls – the students bring to life the story of a 1920’s era radium factory run by an ambitious manager. Then there are his wife, the shopgirls, clerks, members of the board, and basically an entire village seemingly under his thumb, performed by this talented ensemble to produce an emotionally moving piece of theatrical brilliance that you won’t want to miss.
One student said “It’s such a serious topic and based on true events, so it’s hard to bring to life.” Each cast member had so many unique stories to tell about why they love theater and putting on shows, and I wish I could share every quote they gave. What I can say is they are all pure magic. Every last one of them. Each student echoed the same thing when asked to give a quote – they keep coming back to do productions together because it is a creative outlet where they get to spend time with friends in a safe space to create art for others to enjoy. When asked if they will continue to study theater after high school, some said they hope to, but many won’t as they move on to explore other interests such as marine biology, culinary arts, and ministry. Let’s all show up for them to put on the best show for us and support the arts in our local high school!
Why spend Broadway prices at big venues when you can see a quality show and support our local students?
