AVERY GLYNN, EMMA FLETCHER, AND TAYLOR GRIFFITHS NAMED 2019 LINDSAY MAXWELL CHARITABLE FUND WIHS EQUITATION SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
September 30, 2019 – Washington, D.C.

The Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund will honor Avery Glynn, 14, of Petaluma, CA; Emma Fletcher, 17, of Buzzards Bay, MA; and Taylor Griffiths, 17, of Wellington, FL, with the prestigious 2019 Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund Washington International Horse Show Equitation Scholarship. The Washington International Horse Show (WIHS) runs October 22-27, 2019, at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

The Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund (LMCF) is returning for its third year as the title sponsor of the WIHS Equitation Finals. In 2017 LMCF developed the WIHS Equitation Scholarship to recognize the talent, dedication, and hard work of junior riders who compete throughout the year in the hopes of qualifying to participate in the WIHS Equitation Finals.

“It is a pleasure to recognize the incredible riders who have both applied for and received the WIHS Equitation Scholarship. Last year, we expanded the number of scholarship recipients and this year we will continue that growth by honoring three recipients,” said Lindsay Maxwell, founder of the Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund. “The selection committee was impressed by the caliber of applicants this year, and we are thrilled to honor these three young women at the WIHS Equitation Finals.”

Maxwell continued, “The future of our sport depends on young riders like Avery, Emma, and Taylor, who have continually displayed their dedication to our sport, animal welfare, and their local communities.”

“In the third year of the LMCF WIHS Equitation Finals Scholarship program, the WIHS team is beyond impressed by the quality of the applications and the remarkable talent and commitment of these three young competitors,” said WIHS President Victoria Lowell. “We are ever grateful for the increasing generosity and expanded commitment of the Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund to this special, one-of-a-kind program.”

In addition to the honors attendant to this accolade, the scholarship will cover expenses such as travel and lodging for the rider and parent, the show’s entry and application fees, equine transportation and stall fees, and special VIP hospitality access. Now in its 28th year, the LMCF WIHS Equitation Finals is a rigorous three-phase competition held over two days. A panel of three judges test and evaluate the riders in hunter, jumper, and work-off rounds to determine the best of the best.

Former Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund WIHS Equitation Finals champions include former world No. 1 ranked rider Kent Farrington and two-time Olympic gold medalist McLain Ward.

Invitations to compete in the annual Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund WIHS Equitation Finals are sent to the top 40 junior riders based on points earned during the year-long qualifying period.

Tickets for WIHS are available online on Ticketmaster.com, at the Capital One Arena box office, or by calling 1-800-745-3000. For group discounts, contact Capital One Arena Group Sales at 202-661-5061. For more information on tickets and discounts for military, seniors and students, visit WIHS.org/tickets.

Seeks Volunteers and Donations for Annual

CRANKSGIVING Bike Ride & Food Drive

Saturday, November 2

(Boynton Beach, FL – September 25, 2019) Sherry Johnson, executive director of the Community Caring Center of Palm Beach County (CCCPBC), today invited charitable bike riders—from singles to full families—to participate in the nonprofit organization’s annual CRANKSGIVING Bike Ride & Food Drive on Saturday, November 2.

Participating riders will gather at 8 am at Dewey Park, 100 N.E. 4th Street in Boynton Beach. The 8.2 mile roundtrip ride starts at 9 am and includes stops at three different grocery stores (one Walmart, two Publix), where the riders are encouraged to purchase nonperishable food items that the CCCPBC will use to fill 250 Thanksgiving baskets for families in need. A van will follow riders to pick up the purchased items at each store (so bikers won’t have to tote them during the remainder of the roundtrip ride).

“This is a fun event for the whole family, not a bike racing competition with winners and losers,” says event chair and the bike ride’s official “spokes”-person Arturo Wittman. “The real winners are those in need who will get a food-filled Thanksgiving basket to help feed themselves and their loved ones on this very special holiday.”

The cost to participate in this CRANKSGIVING Bike Ride & Food Drive is $15 per person until October 15, $20 after that date, and FREE for those 13-year-old and younger, plus a commitment to spend a minimum of $20 during the bike ride’s three stop-and-shops. Free event t-shirt with every adult registration, and free parking for participants in the municipal lot on N.E. 4th Street.

To sign-up online, please go to registration@Active.com. For more information about this year’s CRANKSGIVING, please visit https://www.cccpbc.org/cranksgiving, or contact Arturo Wittman directly at 561.480.0093.

BTW—nonriders can also participate by dropping off food items on November 2 to the Community Caring Center drop boxes at the three participating stores (Walmart at 3625 S. Federal Highway in Boynton Beach, and two Publix stores in Delray Beach at 1538 S. Federal Highway and 555 N.E. 5th Avenue).

Among the needed items from the CRANKSGIVING Shopping List are cans of green beans, cranberry sauce, yams, and pumpkin pie mix; boxes of stuffing mix and mashed potatoes; bags of rice (16 oz) and onions (3 lbs); packets of gravy mix and stalks of celery; plus turkey vouchers and gift cards ($10 or more).

About the Community Caring Center of Palm Beach County:

Organized by the Boynton Beach Ministerial Alliance in 1987, CCCPBC offers a series of food-related social services and economic development programs to more than 5,000 people (2,500 families), including:

+ Gardening and nutrition education for adults and children

October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month Turns Palm Beach County Pink

Komen Florida Announces a Number of Exciting Community Events

Palm Beach County, Fla – It is not just about wearing pink to raise awareness for breast cancer. October is a time to celebrate breast cancer warriors, it is a time to learn about the progress being made in the fight against the disease, and it is a time to do what we can to help the 1 in 8 women, and the countless number of men, who face a breast cancer diagnosis during their lifetime.

During October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Susan G. Komen Florida has partnered with a number of business and organizations to provide information on what Komen is doing to combat the progression of the disease and access to education and will feature a calendar of events with a number of one-day give backs and month-long local specials to help support Komen’s efforts.

As Florida’s first responders to breast cancer, Susan G. Komen Florida in the last year has expanded its Treatment Assistance Program so patients do not have to choose between treatment or food on the table. The organization has enacted a county-wide Community Breast Health Navigation program that has reached more than 2,000 women in just eighteen months and is working to advocate for better health care and health care options for women throughout the state.

Additionally, Komen announced $26 million in funding for new research projects that focus on metastatic breast cancer, developing new, more-effective treatments, and addressing disparities in breast cancer outcomes. This helps to focus on key areas that will help achieve the Bold Goal to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths in the U.S. by 50 percent by 2026. To support these efforts, many Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2019 opportunities to get involved in the efforts are free while others have a small, suggested donation.

Komen’s BigWigs campaign engages corporate and community leaders across Florida to serve as representatives in the fight against breast cancer. During the six-week campaign that began September 16th and concludes Friday, October 25th, each BigWig is working to raise a minimum of  $1,000, monies that will be used to ensure access to essential breast health services and education programs, and support research to find the cures for breast cancer. Through this program, 75% of funds raised remain local to help fund breast cancer initiatives for those in our communities.

Downtowns Go Pink encourages patrons to visit participating local restaurants and stores throughout the month to light up Palm Beach County from Delray Beach to Jupiter in support of Komen Florida during October’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For the third year, Palm Beach County cities will become destination hot spots by offering special discounts and items to help raise funds for life-saving breast cancer programs, and research to find a cure. Landmarks will be aglow in pink, mixologists will create rosy-hued cocktails, and there will be special shopping incentives and activities for supporters of all ages.

Participating Downtowns Go Pink businesses include Enerzy Exchange Yoga in Boca Raton who is donating 10% of class proceeds from their 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 4th to Komen Florida. Sara Campbell in Delray Beach is donating 15% of sales on Tuesday, October 15th. Join hi yoga etc. on Saturday, October 19th for a 75-minute, all-levels vinyasa flow to align mind, body, and spirit while raising money to combat cancer. The $20 donation-based class is open to all levels. Jessie Boutique in Delray Beach will give back 10% of sales on Thursday, October 24th.

Several other local Downtowns Go Pink businesses are generously giving back all month long. Nothing Bundt Cakes in Palm Beach Gardens is offering an exclusive cake for Breast Cancer Awareness Month with $5 from each one donated to the cause. All proceeds from pink feathers and/or pink peekaboo color from Saltlight Salon in Lake Worth will benefit Susan G. Komen Florida. The Office and Tin Roof (both located in Delray Beach) will donate $1 from each specialty cocktail sold during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Blessed Boutique and Moxie stores at Downtown at the Gardens will donate 10% of sales all month long when customers mention Komen.Avenue Pottery in West Palm Beach will donate 10% of the sales of all “booby” themed pottery to Komen Florida for the entire month of October.

The Executive Women of the Palm Beaches (EWPB) Foundation is hosting a special physicians panel discussion and breakfast called “Breast Cancer Treatment: No Longer One Size Fits All”. The date is set for Thursday, October 3 with registration and breakfast beginning at 7:30 am in the first-floor atrium of Good Samaritan Medical Center. Featured panelists include breast cancer surgeon, Dr. John A.P. Rimmer and cancer genetics counselor and nurse practitioner, Cathy Marinak. Members of EWPBF can purchase tickets for $20; non-member pricing is $25. Tickets are available at ewpb.org/events. Sponsors include: Susan G. Komen Florida, Good Samaritan Medical Center, and Florida Cancer Specialists and Research Institute.

The Lilly Pulitzer Sip and Shop for Komen Florida is happening at The Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens on Monday, October 14thfrom 3-7 p.m. Bring your friends and enjoy sips and sweets while shopping the new Resort 2019 arrivals knowing that 10% of all proceeds will be donated to the organization who is creating real-time access to care and support for women and men in need.
