More New Attractions Coming to Mounts This Fall

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS: Moai in the Tropical Forest

Opening Mid-October 2018, and

GARDEN OF LIGHTS: A Winter Holiday Event

November 24 – December 30, 2018

(West Palm Beach, FL – July 18, 2018) Friends of the Mounts Botanical Garden today announced that it would be celebrating the garden’s 40th Anniversary RUBY JUBILEE with three major new, family-friendly attractions during the coming season (October 2018 through September 2019).

TWISTED:

Patrick Dougherty Entwined at Mounts Botanical Garden

‘A Community Build Project’

(January – June 2019)

North Carolina-based artist Patrick Dougherty is known for his Stickwork projects that combine both his carpentry skills and love of nature. Over the years, his work evolved from single pieces on conventional pedestals to monumental scale environmental works that require saplings by the truckload. Over the last 30 years, he has built over 250 of these works, and become internationally acclaimed. His sculpture has been seen from Scotland to Japan to Brussels, and all over the United States, including two Florida gardens (McKee Botanical in Melbourne and Pinecrest Gardens in Miami) and his recent massive project at Cincinnati’s Taft Museum of Art.

“Each one of Dougherty’s structures are completely original, as will be his Stickwork at Mounts,” says Rochelle Wolberg, Curator-Director at Palm Beach County’s oldest and largest public garden, located just minutes from downtown West Palm Beach. “These giant, all natural structures take three weeks to hand-assemble and will be an interactive and environmental experience, perfect for adults and children to wander through, admire, and become part of a living art experience.”

“During the construction of this Community Build Project, which will start on January 8, Dougherty will be supported by as many as 130 local volunteers who will help build the Stickwork exhibition,” she adds. “The artist will solicit naming suggestions from both volunteers and onlookers, and will announce the final name when it is completed on January 26.”

Mounts Botanical Garden will be closed to the public January 21-26, and re-open on Sunday, January 27, when visitors can experience the completed TWISTED Stickwork exhibition.

Hours & Admission for TWISTED:

Daily – 10 am to 4 pm

Throughout the Garden

FREE for Mounts members; $10 for nonmembers; $5 for children ages 5-12

Tickets are available for purchase at the Garden’s main gate. To schedule a group tour, call 561-233-1757.

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS:

Moai in the Mounts Tropical Forest

Opening Mid-October 2018

Mounts will definitely be “Reaching New Heights” this fall with the permanent installation of three imposing Moai sculptures, replicas of the iconic figurative statues located on Easter Island, Chile. Up to 22-feet high, the Moai heads, torsos and colorful top knots will be placed in the Mounts Tropical Forest where visitors can walk around them and enjoy a spiritual and sensory experience reminiscent of Rapa Nui (the Polynesian term for Easter Island).

“That the people of Easter Island were so motivated to conceive, create and transport such monolithic sculptures with only rudimentary tools, no written language, and without the invention of the wheel is truly inspiring,” says project sponsor Margaret Blume. “This artistic tribute is meant to evoke questions, rather than answer them, and to serve as a link to the past – our history, art and culture. If a visitor to Mounts feels a sense of mystery and awe while being in the presence of the Moai, then we have achieved our mission.”

Hours & Admission for MOAI AT MOUNTS:

Daily – 10 am to 4 pm

Mounts Tropical Forest

FREE for Mounts members and children 5 and under; suggested donation of $5 per person for nonmembers except during GARDEN OF LIGHTS and TWISTED exhibitions, when special admission prices will be in effect.

GARDEN OF LIGHTS:

A Winter Holiday Event at Mounts

November 24 – December 30, 2018

Mounts will be all a-twinkle in the evenings during the holiday season with thousands of holiday lights hanging from the trees, illuminating the walkways and landmark structures, with colorful LED trees and glowing light-balls, all along an easy-to-follow route throughout 15 different garden areas – the perfect way to light-up the holidays for joyous visitors of every age, romantic disposition, and spiritual leanings. In addition, Mounts will present live dance performances and musical presentations from local schools and academies during GARDEN OF LIGHTS: A Winter Holiday Event.

Hours & Admission for GARDEN OF LIGHTS:

Daily – 5:30 to 8:30 pm

Throughout the Garden

$10 for Mounts members; $15 for nonmembers; $5 for children 5 to 12

Tickets are available for purchase at the Garden’s main gate. To schedule a group tour, call 561-233-1757.

Pom Poko – A Film by Isao Takahata
Time: 11 a.m.
(119 min., Rated PG)

(In Japanese, subtitled in English)

In this brilliant and often overlooked Studio Ghibli masterpiece from Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Isao Takahata, the forests are filled with groups of magical tanuki, mischievous raccoon-like animals from Japanese folklore that are capable of shape-shifting from their standard raccoon form to practically any object. The tanuki spend their days playing idly in the hillsides and squabbling over food until the construction of a huge new Tokyo suburb clears the nearby forest and threatens their way of life. In an effort to defend their home, the tanuki learn to transform into humans and start playing tricks to make the workers think the construction site is haunted, ending in a spectacular night-time spirit parade, with thousands of ghosts, dragons and other magical creatures descending on the city — in an abundance of fantastical characters that would not be matched on screen by Studio Ghibli until Spirited Away.

Whisper of the Heart – A Film by Yoshifumi Kondo
Time: 2 p.m.
(111 min., Rated G)

(In Japanese, subtitled in English)

Shizuku is spending her last summer vacation before high school reading and translating foreign music into Japanese. Perusing the eclectic selection of books she has checked out from the library, her curiousity is piqued when she notices that the name Seiji appears before hers on the checkout card of each one. Through a series of curious and magical incidents, she comes to meet and establishes a connection to Seiji – who has dreams of becoming a famous violinmaker in Italy, while she has aspirations of becoming a writer. As their life goals pull them in different directions, Shizuku and Seiji are determined to remain true to their feelings for one another. A masterpiece about the awakening of creative talent, Whisper of the Heart was the first and only full-length feature by Hayao Miyazaki’s protégé Yoshifumi Kondo before his sudden death at the young age of 47. It remains one of the classics of Japanese animation.

Palm Beach County Youth Climate March

Palm Beach County Youth Climate March

In conjunction with the national Youth Climate March, we will protest in Palm Beach County in the heart of the Agricultural Reserve, representing the front lines in the battle to protect our planet and the future of Palm Beach County. We will meet at Bedner’s, then march about a half mile north to an incomplete road meant to plow right through our farmland. They want to put a road through paradise and pave over the last of our open space. Let’s tell them to choose a different path that leads to a brighter and healthier future for our children.

The students are most at risk by climate change because this will be our only home for decades to come, and we want to be able to enjoy it to the fullest for the rest of our lives. That is why the students, as well as everyone else who inhabits this planet, must fight to protect it.

Organization: Student March to Stop Gun Violence and Zero Hour

When: July 21 at 4:00 pm

Where: Meet at Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market on State Road 7 (10066 Lee Road, Boynton Beach, FL 33473), then march about a half mile north

PACE Program Around Wellington

PACE Program Around Wellington

By David Schaefer and Bryan Hayes

What is the number one consideration when it comes to upgrading your home or business to being energy efficient whether it be the HVAC, impact doors and windows, installing solar panels or other sustainable options?

It is, “Can I afford to pay for it?” Right?

Finding an affordable and reliable contractor is critical in the decision-making process, but there is a financing option with which you may not be familiar, known as PACE, which is administered by the AllianceNRG Program (for residential property owners) and the CounterpointSRE Program (for commercial property owners).  Both are authorized to do business throughout Wellington and all of Palm Beach County.

PACE is an acronym for Property Assessed Clean Energy, but includes more than renewable energy and energy efficiency and conservation.  It also includes wind resistance improvements.

With PACE, you can finance 100% of your project costs (materials, labor, permits, plans, etc.) and closing costs.  Terms range from 5 to 30 years but cannot exceed the useful life of the improvements being installed.  Interest rates are fixed. PACE financing is secured by a tax lien on your property and the annual installments are added to your property tax bill.

The process is simple.  All of the information, including the application, is online.   On the residential side, approval can often be provided in a matter of minutes.    Once approved, documents are sent to the homeowner to review, you speak to an authorized representative to review the terms and, if you’re satisfied it’s the right financing option for you, you signed them electronically.   Once all documents are returned, you will receive a notice to proceed with your project.

If you do not have a contractor for your project, the AllianceNRG Program can assist you in finding a contractor that is registered with the Program.  If you have a contractor that is not registered with the AllianceNRG Program, the Program will assist your contractor in getting registered and familiar with PACE.  Each registered contractor has to be licensed and insured as required by law and is required to abide by a code of conduct, which provides a variety of consumer protections.  The contractor’s status is checked each time it works on a project financed with PACE financing.

The project will not be funded unless the homeowners sign a certificate stating that they are satisfied with the work completed by the contractor.  Furthermore, the contractor also has to sign a certificate stating that they have completed the project that they were authorized to install through the financing.   Ensuring this level of customer satisfaction is not available when using a line of credit, credit card, or any other means of financing.   No one is vetting the contractor prior to starting the project nor is anyone vetting the project after the work has been completed and before payment is made.  If contractors do not adhere to the code of conduct, then they will be dropped from the Program.

The procedures are similar for commercial properties.  Because the projects are typically more complex, the process is lengthier, but still much quicker than traditional bank financing.   It takes approximately 45 days, which includes the submission of needed documents and underwriting the property and project.

The AllianceNRG and CounterpointeSRE Programs are sponsored by the Florida PACE Funding Agency, a governmental agency that was created in 2011 for the sole purpose of establishing a statewide PACE program.  The Agency, through its program administrator, Counterpointe Energy Solutions, seeks to have counties and cities subscribe to its PACE program at no cost to them and seeks a partnership with all subscribing counties and cities.  The Agency also oversees the PACE programs it sponsors.  Among other things, the Agency ensures that the Programs are following the Agency’s consumer protection policies, including making sure that contractors follow the code of conduct.   Finally, since PACE is a form of tax lien, known as an assessment, on the property, it is the Agency that levies the assessment and submits it to the county tax collector that has to put the assessment on the tax rolls.

In Florida, the AllianceNRG and CounterpoineSRE Programs are implemented throughout most of 31 counties in the state covering more than half of the population.  The expectation is that within the next nine to 12 months, these programs will be available in at least 80% of the state.

If you are considering remodeling your home or your commercial property, do not let cost stand as a barrier to making it energy efficient or wind resistant.   To see if you qualify, and for further details, visit:

MNM’s second show in 2018 will open on July 27 and run through August 12

The second-longest running Off Broadway musical, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is about “everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives and in-laws, but were afraid to admit.” This celebration of the mating game takes on the truths and myths behind that contemporary conundrum known as “the relationship.”

Act I explores the journey from dating and waiting to love and marriage, while Act II reveals the agonies and triumphs of in-laws and newborns, trips in the family car and pick-up techniques of the geriatric set. This hilarious revue pays tribute to those who have loved and lost, to those who have fallen on their face at the portal of romance, to those who have dared to ask, “Say, what are you doing Saturday night?”

Dom Ruggiero is directing I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, with Caryl Fantel serving as music director. The stellar 4-person cast includes Clay Cartland, Anna Lise Jensen, Heather Kopp, and Michael Scott Ross.
