KURBAN HOSPITALITY GROUP ANNOUNCES NOVEMBER 1ST OPENING FOR AMAR KITCHEN & BAR

0

Gesto artisanal pizza to debut winter 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Downtown Delray Beach’s beloved Amar Mediterranean Bistro will open in its new location on November 1, 2024. Moving to 25 SE 6th Ave, just steps from its current location, the new 4,500-square-foot space will offer additional seating for large parties, covered outdoor dining and a full bar with daily happy hour specials. Amar will also launch their first Sunday brunch before the holiday season.

In its new iteration as Amar Mediterranean Kitchen & Bar, the restaurant will continue serving its renowned dishes, including cold and hot mezze such as hummus, baba ghanouj, muhammara, kibbeh and falafel, as well as grilled meats, kebabs, fresh fish and homemade desserts. The larger kitchen will enable an expanded menu featuring additional plates that pay homage to owner Nicolas Kurban’s Lebanese heritage.

Opened in 2021 during the pandemic, Amar Bistro has become a favored dining spot for modern adaptations of traditional Lebanese dishes. Presenting a crossroad of flavors and cultures, Amar takes guests on a culinary journey through the Mediterranean and Middle East. Nicolas (pictured above) runs a true family-owned restaurant with the assistance of his daughter Nicole and son-in-law Michael McKenna.

“The way the community has embraced us is nothing short of spectacular. We have loved our first home here on the Avenue, but we’ve outgrown the space for Amar, and we’ve always dreamed of having a bar where people can come for happy hour or a solo dinner while enjoying a great cocktail,” said owner Nicolas Kurban. “With the expertise of our beverage consultant, Eric Hammer, we’ve curated an exceptional cocktail menu and an eclectic wine list featuring outstanding Lebanese wines and other gems. The new space will also allow us to host semi-private events and eventually expand our hours to lunch and brunch,” he continued.

Amar Kitchen & Bar will feature a complete bar program offering a tempting array of innovative cocktails with seasonal fruits, house-made syrups and premium spirits. Guests can expect twists on classic cocktails and signature drinks that highlight the rich flavors of the Mediterranean. The program aims to create a memorable drinking experience that complements the restaurant’s culinary offerings.

In place of Amar Bistro, Kurban Hospitality Group will introduce a new concept called Gesto, an artisanal pizza shop. “At the centerpiece of Amar is a wood-burning oven where we baked our handmade pita bread,” said Kurban. “It makes perfect sense to transition the space into an intimate pizza shop where we’ll focus on the best ingredients, providing a unique and authentic pizza experience.” Gesto is anticipated to open in winter 2025.

Nicolas’s palpable passion for his work comes from his father, who owned one of Lebanon’s most famous and long-standing restaurants. As a seasoned hospitality veteran, Nicolas has worked in operational roles with celebrated chefs such as Thomas Keller and Wolfgang Puck and in executive positions with luxury properties and casinos around the world, including Wynn Resort & Casino Las Vegas, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, Four Seasons Hotels Asia Pacific and Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants.

Saving Endangered Florida Panthers, Hosted by Wellington and Oleander Garden Clubs

Florida Panther
Dr. Rizkalla

Wellington Garden Club and Oleander Garden Club invite the community to join them at the Wellington Community Center, 12150 Forest Hill Blvd., on Thursday, October 24 from 2:00 to 3:30 PM for a presentation on saving the critically endangered Florida panther by Carol Rizkalla, PhD, Florida Panther Management Program Coordinator for Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Dr. Rizkalla will elaborate on the history of the Florida panther as well as the loss of habitat and other factors that have caused its population to plummet. She will also discuss the importance of conservation of this unique species, the efforts underway that are crucial to ensure its survival, and review ways we can help with these efforts. Once found throughout Florida and other southern states, the Florida panther has been federally listed as endangered since 1967. Only 120 to 230 Florida panthers survive today, according to recent Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission estimates. Clearly, these magnificent big cats are facing an uncertain future and need our help to overcome the decline of their population.

Carol Rizkalla, PhD, first came to Florida in 1999 for an internship at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  She left to pursue a PhD in Wildlife Ecology at Purdue University then returned to Disney for a few years. She has been moving further south ever since. Her post-doctoral research investigated sand skink population estimation at Archbold Biological Station, an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to ecological research, conservation, and education located in Venus, FL.  She joined the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in West Palm Beach in 2012 and served in a variety of roles in species and land management.  In 2022, she became the Panther Management Program Coordinator and is currently based in Naples. She is honored to be part of the dedicated team working towards the recovery of an iconic species which belongs across the landscape!

The event will include refreshments and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are $25 and are available at www.wellingtongardenclub.org. Tickets at the door are $30. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Florida Panther Management Program. The balance will help fund the youth programs, scholarships and community outreach initiatives of Wellington Garden Club and Oleander Garden Club of the Palm Beaches. The clubs are members of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs www.ffgc.org and National Garden Clubs www.gardenclub.org.

After a successful summer, the City of West Palm Beach has extended the concert series into the fall. The concert series will continue to feature a lineup of top local, regional and national musicians. Soul in the City will be held on the third Wednesday of October through December from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Lake Pavilion (101 South Flagler Drive). “We continue to receive rave reviews about our Soul in the City Jazz Experience,” said West Palm Beach Mayor Keith A. James. “This is why we are thrilled to share that we will extend the intimate concert series for another season. Bringing the best jazz performers in the nation to our beautiful Waterfront has made Soul in the City a great success, so be sure to get your tickets early before they sell out!”

The Soul in the City Jazz Experience lineup includes:

For over two decades, Colorado-born, LA-based keyboardist and bandleader, Lao Tizer, has been bringing his unique musical worldview to jazz and beyond. With seven albums and numerous tours, The Lao Tizer Band has attracted a host of A-list musicians to its ranks. Joining keyboardist, bandleader and former “Best New Jazz Artist” nominee Lao Tizer for the evening are; American Idol star, Elliott Yamin, drum phenom Tony Austin (Kamasi Washington) and Senegalese bassist, producer and composer, Cheikh N’Doye (Baaba Maal, Weedie Braimah). The evening will be a high-energy musical ride through a variety of flavors and styles with an all-star cast of musicians.

Tap Into Soul with Solomon Jaye blends multi-octave vocals and world-class tap dancing to a soulful setlist, featuring classic and contemporary chart-topping hits. Solomon Jaye’s Tap Into Soul offers an exciting new take on a timeless genre of music, such as — “I Feel Good” by James Brown; “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green; “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder; “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire and more. The audience can expect a high-energy show accompanied by Jaye’s frenzy of fast footwork and even some surprise instrumental solos. Listeners are sure to travel to the 1950s in the blink of an eye.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Palm Beach County, and

Wellington Florist Join Nationwide Effort to ‘Petal It Forward’

Team will Spread Smiles and Stress Relief, Two Bouquets at a Time

WELLINGTON, FL (October 14, 2024)— On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Palm Beach County and Wellington Florist will join dozens of floral industry businesses nationwide to surprise unsuspecting passersby in Wellington and West Palm Beach with two free flower bouquets each — one to keep and one to give to a friend, family member, colleague, or even a stranger. The random-acts-of-kindness effort — called Petal It Forward and organized by the Society of American Florists (SAF), of which Wellington Florist is a member — is designed to help people start their day with more smiles and less stress. The effort illustrates research from the University of North Florida (UNF) that shows living with flowers reduces stress.

“Petal It Forward is the floral industry’s way of giving back,” said Elizabeth Daly, SAF’s manager of marketing and communications, citing the effort was purposefully planned for a Wednesday to help the mid-week slump. J.P. Varvarigos, owner of Wellington Florist, wanted to be a part of the mood-boosting effort and make a difference in the community. He also wanted to be a part of this effort with a local nonprofit- Habitat for Humanity of Greater Palm Beach County- to assist in this random-acts-of-kindness effort.

“We see the positive impact day in and day out when we make our flower deliveries,” said J.P. Varvarigos FSMD, Owner of Wellington Florist. “People love to get flowers ‘just because’ so we wanted to create random smiles today and give people a chance to do the same for someone else.”

“Through the positive effects of flowers, we hope to make someone’s day brighter, and provide a much-needed moment of calm amidst the hectic pace of life,” he added.

The research findings on flowers and stress relief, and the need for mood-boosting gestures, seem timely: A survey by Wakefield Research in July showed that 68 percent of Americans experience stress weekly, and 32 percent report feeling stressed daily. Women are even more affected, with 25 percent reporting feeling stress multiple times a day.

Varvarigos says the original idea behind Petal It Forward’s ‘keep one, share one’ concept, which started in 2015, came after looking at statistics that showed while 80 percent of people reported receiving flowers makes them happy, even more (88 percent) said that giving flowers makes them happy. “We want to give people the chance to experience both,” said Varvarigos.

Julia Murphy, Chief Development Officer at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Palm Beach County, shares, “We are excited to be a part of this nationwide event to help brighten the day of people in our community. Our Habitat team will hand out 2,000 flowers donated by Wellington Florist throughout the day all over our county.”

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office will also give away 300 roses from Wellington Florist in front of the Palm Beach County Courthouse, and the Wellington Rotary Club will pass out 500 flowers in the Wellington area. A total of 3,000 flowers will be given away by Wellington Florist during Petal It Forward.

If you do receive flowers from the Habitat team, take pictures and videos of your arrangements and event day happenings to post on your social media channels. Use #PetalItForward and tag @SocietyofAmericanFlorists<https://www.facebook.com/SocietyofAmericanFlorists> on Instagram and Facebook so SAF can help maximize reach.
