THE RAYMOND F. KRAVIS CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS RECEIVES $100,000 GRANT FROM DISNEY TO FUND THEATER EDUCATION PROGRAM

Applications Now Available for Palm Beach County Title I Public Elementary Schools to Participate and Produce a Disney Musical at No Cost.

(West Palm Beach, FL) – The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts has been awarded a $100,000 grant from Disney to bring the Disney Musicals in Schools program to Palm Beach County. The program is an outreach initiative developed by Disney Theatrical Productions to create sustainable theater programs in under-resourced elementary schools. The grant funds two years of programming; the Kravis Center will select four area public elementary schools to participate in the 2017-2018 school year, and another four will be selected for the following year.

The selected schools will participate in a 17-week musical theater residency, led by a team of teaching artists trained by the Kravis Center and Disney Theatrical Productions, at no cost. Each school will receive performance rights, education support materials and guidance from the teaching artists. The program features a professional development focus, through which participating school teachers partner with Kravis Center teaching artists to learn how to produce, direct, choreograph, and music direct, culminating in their first 30-minute Disney KIDS musical at their school. As a capstone to the experience, the Kravis Center will host a Student Share Celebration in which each school performs one number from their show on the Kravis Center’s Dreyfoos Hall stage for an audience of students, teachers, family, and community members.

Using the unique world of musical theater, Disney Musicals in Schools helps to foster positive relationships between students, faculty, staff, parents, and the community. Students and teachers work in teams, developing the wide spectrum of skills needed when producing a piece of musical theater, including: critical thinking, problem solving, ensemble building, communication, self-confidence, and interpersonal skills.

“As part of our ever-expanding arts education programming, The Kravis Center is proud to collaborate with Disney Musicals in Schools to provide this unique experience to under-resourced elementary schools in our region,” reported Judith A. Mitchell, CEO. “We are honored to receive this generous grant from Disney, and we are excited to be announcing this tremendous opportunity to create sustainable theater education programs at the local level.”

Applications are now being accepted for 2017-2018 school year. Any Palm Beach County Title I (at least 70% of students eligible for Free/Reduced Lunch) public elementary school is eligible to apply. The application deadline is April 28, 2017. For more information or to apply, logon to kravis.org/DMIS, call the Kravis Center Education Hotline at 561.651.4251 or send an email to gumbinner@kravis.org.

Disney Musicals in Schools was launched in 2010 in response to Disney Theatrical Production’s concern that under-resourced public elementary schools were not afforded equitable access to the arts. After successfully offering the program in New York City schools, Disney Theatrical Productions began partnering with organizations in other communities across the United States.

Disney KIDS musicals, created in partnership with Music Theater International (MTI), are 30-minute musicals designed for elementary school performers and have been adapted from the classic Disney films 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, The Aristocats, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, Sleeping Beauty, and Winnie the Pooh.

“FOTOcamp is my favorite time of the year,” she adds. “I enjoy seeing the amazing images the kids come back with from their field trips, and I love to see their reactions when working in a real studio.”

FOTOcamp students are grouped by their level of experience, from beginner to advanced in each of three 2-week summer sessions. Students are each issued a digital SLR Camera and while exploring lens choices, lighting, and composition of photographs they will learn about photography and digital imaging, in a fun and fact-filled environment.

The computer lab is set up so that each student has access to a computer ensuring the ultimate hands-on experience. Location shooting and photographic assignments give them the opportunity to practice their skills while acquiring new images.

Based at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre in downtown West Palm Beach, all sessions of FOTOcamp will include a professional instructor and an assistant, with opportunities for both individualized and group critiques for each student.

The culmination of all three sessions of FOTOcamp for Kids will be a special exhibition of photos taken by the young students. At the exhibition’s opening in August, one talented FOTOcamper will be named Student of the Year and receive a free SLR Digital camera.

South Florida Sweet Corn Fiesta Heads into 17th Year this Month

Yasir Salem ate 47 ears of Florida sweet corn at last year’s League Eating’s National Sweet Corn Eating Championship to become the reigning champion.

Who/What: The 17th annual South Florida Sweet Corn Fiesta

When: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sun., April 30
Major League Eating’s National Sweet Corn Eating Championship begins at 3 p.m.

Where: Yesteryear Village, South Florida Fairgrounds, 9067 Southern Blvd., West Palm Beach

Details: More than 4,000 visitors are expected to attend this annual event to eat some of the best locally grown sweet corn and enjoy other activities for both children and adults. Among the highlights is Major League Eating’s National Sweet Corn Eating Championship. At stake is a total purse prize of $6,100. According to MLE, this 12-minute event is “the ultimate test of technique and capacity, a marathon in which focus and emotional calm is more important than pure power.” At last year’s event, Yasir Salem ate 47 ears of Florida sweet corn to set a new world record. An amateur contest will precede the professional competition. To enter, participants must sign up before 12:45 p.m.

Other highlights include an expanded Kid Zone, sponsored by Florida Crystals, with more rides and other contests beginning at 1 p.m., including old-fashioned bathing suits, kids and adult corn shucking. Two bands — The Krystal River Band and The Sierra Band — will provide live music throughout the day.

The South Florida Sweet Corn Fiesta celebrates Palm Beach County’s heritage as the “Sweet Corn Capital of the World.” Palm Beach County grows more sweet corn than any other county in the US. Local farmers cultivate more than 27,000 acres yearly. Few counties grow half that acreage. In April and May alone, over 7 million crates of fresh Florida Sunshine sweet corn are shipped each year. The local yield is quickly shipped to supermarkets throughout the United States, Canada and Europe and the new varieties can have a refrigerated life of 10 to 12 days. The Sweet Corn Fiesta is an outreach activity of the Western Palm Beach County Farm Bureau and is made possible by sponsors and volunteers. Proceeds go to agriculture education and advocacy and to Glades area food banks. For more information, call (561) 996-0343 or visit the website, http://www.sweetcornfiesta.com.

Admission: $8 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-11, and free to kids 5 years old and younger. A $5 unlimited rides wristband is available for kids. Parking is free. No outside food or beverages are permitted.

Jeffros Heroes, Bringing Smiles to Kids in Hospitals

Jeffros Heroes, Bringing Smiles to Kids in Hospitals

By Krista Martinelli

Jeff Ritter of Jeffros Heroes

Jeff Ritter is a true super hero.  It all began about 3 years ago when he founded Jeffros Heroes.  He dresses up as different superheroes and visits kids in hospitals and rehab centers.  It’s something that he and a few of his friends do free of charge.  These days he often gets calls from nurses and finds out who to visit and who the preferred superhero is.  Ritter explains, “When their real hero thinks they are cool, that’s the best feeling.  I bring positivity and assurance to kids.”

Here is Ritter in action with a teenage boy who has cerebral palsy.  People have asked him how he knows what to say.  “It’s easy,” he says. “I just start by saying 9 or 10 nice things about them.”

Ironically, Ritter says that he has “no special talents.”  I would argue that he has a special talent for talking to children who are going through a rough time.  He makes what some might find awkward as effortless.

He was dressing up for kids’ birthday parties when he got the idea to bring cheer to kids in hospitals three years ago. He works as a waiter at a restaurant called BrickTops and does this on the side.  “You have to use what you have to help others,” he strongly believes.

He says that he’s had a giving spirit ever since his childhood, which is something his parents instilled in him.  Their church was doing a toy drive for kids in Haiti when Ritter was six years old.  “I believe in the Golden Rule,” says Ritter.  “I couldn’t even picture what it might be like to be a kid with no toys.  I gave away all of my toys for that toy drive.”

His best costume, according to Ritter, is the batman costume.  “It looks the coolest, but it’s also the sweatiest.”  With a little help from friends, they can also bring Superman, Spiderman, Batman, Supergirl and a few other superheroes to hospitals.

They have visited children in St. Mary’s, the Nicholas Children’s Hospital in Miami, Quantum House and a few foster homes, including Grandma’s Place.

Ritter says that people can donate via his GoFundMe account, Heroes4Hospitals, which is a 501c3 organization.  He also has a Facebook page for his related non-profit organization The Love Planet.  And there’s a Jeffros Heroes Facebook page too.  Jeffros Heroes can take checks.  Also, those who would like to volunteer can get in touch with Jeff Ritter for more information.

Hero wristbands for $5 to support Jeffro’s Heroes, as well as a family in need.

Another small way to support Jeffros Heroes is to buy a wristband for $5. On one side, it says, “You are someone’s hero” and on the flip side, it says, “I am someone’s hero.”  According to Ritter, these are intended to circulate in the community.   If someone does something nice for you, you can give them the wristband, telling them, “You are someone’s hero.”  For every bracelet purchased, $1 goes directly to one of three families in need.

Recently there was an 8-year-old girl who had been in a car accident.  Her birthday was coming up in a week and what she really wanted was a visit from Ironman, her favorite hero.  In just two days, they were able to raise the $1,000 needed for an Ironman suit.  This girl got a visit from Captain America, Batman and yes, Ironman.  She was crying – tears of joy.  “You can make a difference,” says Ritter, “even when you have only a week.”

He takes heart in the fact that most of these kids want to give back. He often asks them what they want to be when they grow up. “99% of the time they say, ‘I want to be a doctor for kids or a nurse. When you see love and compassion coming from kids like that, it’s amazing.’” These are kids who are being poked and prodded throughout the day for medical reasons, but still have the energy to give back.

Often the parents feel helpless in some ways, not knowing how to improve the situation for their kids. “They are always so gracious and overly thankful,” says Ritter.  Because he doesn’t do it for money, but just out of kindness, the parents treat him as a hero as well.

Jeff Ritter has always loved kids.  “Even at 15 years old, I was thinking about having kids,” he says.  Today he and his girlfriend Kara have a 5-year-old daughter and a son on the way.  Often he has his daughter help him in some way with his volunteer work.  “I have her help me, not because it’s cute to have her there, but to instill in her what my parents instilled in me at an early age about helping others.”  For example, recently his daughter presented the $3,000 that they raised for his friend Tony, who has cancer of the esophagus.

He grew up in Loxahatchee.  His parents are “like traveling pastors.”  His Mom sings, and his Dad plays keyboards as well as other instruments.  “They’re proud of me,” he says. “It took me 35 years to make them proud, but I did it.”

It’s good to know that there is a local superhero that kids can count on.  Sometimes he brings a few of his superhero friends too.  Thanks, Jeffros Heroes!

Happy March & April 2017

Happy March & April

Time marches on and sometimes we need to combine the Letter from the Editor for two months.  It’s a beautiful spring with Passover going on, and people making preparations for Easter.

Jeffrey Ritter visits children in hospitals, spreading cheer.

Today I had the pleasure of interviewing a true hero, Jeff Ritter of Jeffros Heroes.  For about three years now, he’s been dressing up as a superhero and visiting sick kids in hospitals, bringing cheer wherever he goes.  It’s always inspiring to meet someone who does something they truly love and someone who doesn’t do it for money, but for the joy of it.  My story about Jeff will come out a little later this month.

This month (April) I also had the opportunity to interview Justin Brady of a much-loved local restaurant, Bolay.  A lot of people are frequent flyers to Bolay, eating there three or four times a week.  Read about what makes Bolay’s healthy take on eating so special in this month’s “AW Spotlight” article.

A warm welcome to our new intern and Teen Talk writer Mikayla Carroll.  Mikayla is also the News Editor at the Palm Beach Central High School newspaper, the Bronco Beat.  I look forward to hearing about what is on her mind in upcoming Teen Talk columns.

One of our writers, Dr. Randy Laurich, has been producing videos instead of writing articles for his “Ask the Docs” column, a nice twist.  Check out his informative video about the possible Repercussions of Heavy Weight Lifting.

This month Wendell Abern gets even more Cantankerous in Cantankerously Yours as he recalls his attempts to fix a flat tire and the reputation that it brought him.

For a run-down of some great cultural things to Live, Go, Do, read “Cultural Corner” by Lori Baumel.  She always provides an excellent listing of things to do.  This month she talks about the many twists and turns we have experienced…with the election, the Oscars, the Superbowl.  Things have been unpredictable.

As always, this is just the tip of the iceberg.  Please explore the many articles and new photos that we have to offer on AroundWellington.com.  And I look forward to seeing you Around Wellington!
