July/August, 2015 – Staying Productive over the Summer

Staying Productive over the Summer

By Gabi Harris

I feel like I’m constantly trying to spread both productivity and positivity among my peers and even in my Teen Talk articles. Yes, summer is a time to relax from work and school, but it’s also a time to figure things out and be productive! My summers include me also working at my job, but I also like to keep myself busy because staying on the couch, constantly watching Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix can get boring after a while. Again, yes, Netflix is a beautiful, beautiful thing, but so are activities that help you better yourself!

If you’re an entering senior, then this summer should be the opposite of a walk in the park. Researching colleges, applying for early admission, pumping up the resume are just a few of the things high school seniors have to encounter the summer before entering senior year. Don’t forget online classes, summer institutes, and (if you don’t know yet) figuring out where exactly you want to spend the next four or more years. The summer is the perfect and only time to plan all this out because trust me, once the year begins, it’ll be over before you know it. Plan out accordingly; stay on track of things, so you can be moving your tassel from the right to left side next year, Class of 2016!

Now if you’re not an upcoming senior, maybe you don’t have much to worry about but staying productive is still something you may want to consider, as you lay on your bed constantly refusing to see daylight? When I wasn’t working over the summer I found myself at home often, laying down with my laptop on my stomach finishing seasons of TV shows. Those days caused me sickness from feeling as if I wasn’t accomplishing anything, so I decided ENOUGH WAS ENOUGH. Whether my friends were working, out of town, or at college, I decided I still had to move on with my life and do something besides staying at home all day.

I took trips to art museums, the beach, to get coffee, and finished most of the tasks I wanted to have done by the end of the summer. Whether you complete an online class or finish your summer reading book, productivity will find you not being upset with yourself when (I’m sorry I’m mentioning it) school comes back around.

Keep yourself busy! A couple of days relaxing and doing nothing are obviously necessary, but don’t forget to stay on track with what you need to complete this summer!

June, 2015 – If GMOs are so Safe, Why NOT Label Them?

SOILED soil! … If GMOs are so safe, why NOT label them?

“If it doesn’t have a Label, we don’t want it on our Table!”

By Ilyse August

Ilyse August, champion of good causes and comedy

Today, May 16, 2015, I was inspired.  With local Wellington business leaders, the President of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, along with many residents of Wellington, I was thrilled to participate in the first Wellington March Against Monsanto.  GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms. Touted as a way to increase harvests, these “foods” instead are altering our food supply, literally requiring the addition of chemicals—poisons—to seeds being planted in order for them to sprout. Monsanto, known for its pesticide Roundup, is now splicing the seeds of corn, soy and other vegetables, actually changing the DNA and putting Roundup into the seeds to make them “Roundup resistant.”  Read on about .

A great day for Wellington and GMO-FREE living! A bad day for Monsanto. The March Against Monsanto in Wellington, FL on May 16th, 2015. Photo: Lois Spatz.

Check out the about the March Against Monsanto in Wellington, FL, produced by Monica Kallas.

GMOs are in our grain, soy and corn; in our fruits, in tomatoes, potatoes and fish—and much more.  Estimates are that 80% of what we eat currently contains GMOs.

Those of us at this event realize that this fight for labeling the GMO content in our foods is ultimately a fight not just for adults in the community, but for our children—and perhaps for our future.

After losing my mom to cancer nearly ten years ago, I developed an interest in how to stay healthy. In 2012 I began a journey looking first hand at companies in the Nutraceutical industry.  I looked at a myriad of vitamin supplementation modalities, in particular at some of those in the new ‘anti-aging’ revolution based on the science of genetic expression.  I looked at Nano technologies and into our nation’s top Genomic/Proteomic Laboratory Botanical Science Engine (which tests botanical rain forest molecules).  Even as promising and ‘impressive’ as these lab facilities are, and despite the amazing science they are using, I realized that at the end of the day, an actual product quality was still based on the bottom dollar. I also came to really understand that lab created molecules, whether based on botanicals or if processed into nano sized nutrients, canNOT replicate the pure value of what G-D has created—via whole foods and whole food extracts—for our bodies to recognize and utilize.

At the crux of this understanding is assimilability.  This word refers to the actual ability of antioxidants and other vital nutrients to go from a food and become part of your body—who you are.  The highest assimilability comes from the nutrients naturally occurring in whole superfoods.

As I was meticulously researching this realm of super foods vs. vitamins and other supplements, I also became more acquainted with the downward spiral pesticides were having on our soils, I learned how very depleted our soil was becoming – nearly completely devoid of any micromineral content, and without the essential bacterial co-factors that are essential for mineral absorption by crops.

I discovered that many of our current diseases and malignancies and addictions/mental health issues were ultimately all pointing in one direction—severe nutrient deficiencies from the degraded nutritional profiles in our foods. We simply are NOT getting the minerals, amino acids, enzymes, enzymatic co-factors, Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s,) etc. that our grandparents received without even thinking about it.  The United States is a very sick nation.  We are the #1 country for  pharmaceutical drug use per capita but world-wide, aren’t even  in the top 35 for longevity OR health.

We are the only “leading” Western country which has not banned or curtailed the use of GMO’s.

I’ve never been very political even though I come from a family of lawyers. However, the political schemes of the major pharmaceutical giants, insurance, and the health care industry are so intertwined with government policies and the FDA, that I am are truly sickened. We need to get educated & spread the word that we need to fight back for our health.  One incredibly important action is to require GMO labeling.

“If it doesn’t have a label, we don’t want it on our table” is a chant I heard at the MAM Wellington event.  What’s missing in our soil is as bad as what can now be found in our soil!

As we slowly move from a Supersize mentality to a Superfoods mentality, we have to push towards gaining an education on how best to optimize our health and become proactive in helping the future generations have the opportunity for the same.

My next article will begin the series of ancient foods articles.

June, 2015 – Wycliffe Conditions Golfers with TPI Training Event

WYCLIFFE CONDITIONS GOLFERS WITH TPI TRAINING EVENT

If you’re not familiar with TPI (Titleist Performance Institute), it is the world’s leading educational organization dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to the golf swing. Since its inception in 2003, TPI has studied thousands of golfers ranging from the top professional tour players to weekend enthusiasts. An incredible amount of data on players of all shapes, sizes, ages, and fitness levels has been gathered during this time. Using this data, TPI discovered how a properly functioning body allows a player to swing a golf club in the most efficient way possible. Additionally, TPI has analyzed how physical limitations in a player’s body can adversely affect the golf swing and potentially lead to injury.

TPI’s mission is to educate golfers and industry professionals on the body/swing connection through its one of a kind ‘TPI Certified’ educational program. This program was developed by founders Dr. Greg Rose and Dave Phillips along with a 52 member advisory staff of industry leading experts. Five unique fields of study are offered for TPI Certification: Golf, Medical, Fitness, Power and Junior Development. Currently, there are over 15,000 Certified professionals in over 58 countries assisting players of all skill levels, including Wycliffe’s very own Fitness Supervisor, Stephanie Corman, who now is TPI Certified Fitness Level 3.

On June 16, 2015, Wycliffe Golf & Country Club’s Fitness Department held a Father’s Day Co-Ed TPI Conditioning Golf Event for members. The event was created to educate members as well as teach them first-hand what TPI is all about, and how doing tailored exercises can increase upper body strength and help with driving your ball. A few of our members also volunteered to participate with Stephanie. Exercises included: Torso Rotation Test, Pelvic Rotation Test and a Pelvic Tilt Test.

Paul Rifenberg, Wycliffe’s Assistant Golf Professional, also had the opportunity to talk with members why TPI related exercises are so important for your golf game. Paul demonstrates how pulling the club the correct way, transferring your weight properly and using your core muscles, helps you with the strength needed when swinging. Read on . . .

June, 2015 – Wycliffe Spotlight: Paul Rifenberg

WYCLIFFE SPOTLIGHT: PAUL RIFENBERG, ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL

Wycliffe Golf & Country Club is known not just for its wonderful amenities offered to members or its two beautifully manicured Championship Golf Courses, but also for the incredible Golf Professionals that we have on staff to instruct and work with members. Many of our members take up golf because it’s a way to relax, unwind and enjoy the scenery and lifestyle offered. However, there are many here that absolutely love the game and want to improve their skill-set. Paul Rifenberg, who has been an employee at Wycliffe since 2000, is one of our top professionals to teach members at all skill levels.

Paul started playing golf at the age of 7, but it wasn’t really until his freshman year of high school that he found the love of competitive golf. He went onto win his High School District Championship during his senior year. Paul then continued his golfing career at Florida Atlantic University, playing #1 for the team for 2 years. After that, he officially turned pro to compete at a much higher level, and still competes on that higher level, maintaining a better than scratch handicap.

Wycliffe is very fortunate to have such a pro working with us day in and day out. Not only does Paul provide lessons to our members, both private and as part of golf clinics, but he also adds tremendous value to Wycliffe. Being part of our Golf Team, really changes the dynamics of how we present our community to the outside public. There are many golfers in Florida and elsewhere around the country, who are looking to purchase a new home but also looking for that perfect course to go with it. By having a Golf Professional like Paul on our team, we can better promote our services, such as Golf Clinics, Private Lessons, Golf Events and more. Read on . . .

June, 2015 – Eyeless in America

June, 2015 – Special Guest Editorial

By Jon Frangipane

EYELESS IN AMERICA

How many of us have really taken time to honestly examine our own true feelings regarding our family, friends, environment, politics, government, education, race and a myriad of other important life matters?

Because the speed at which life speeds along now has increased to such a horrific pace, too many people have become lost in a cataclysmic torrent of meaningless minutiae.

What has become more important to those too many people are cell phones whose screen and its inner workings have become more familiar than the faces of their very own families and friends.

And then, to see a family of four sitting in a restaurant with two children intently looking down at their prized cell phone, tablet or some other god-forsaken latest gadget on the market, you certainly wouldn’t be surprised at all to see one or two of the parents doing the same.

This behavior is only the tip of the iceberg. Texting for many of us has taken the place of phone calls (not to mention the wonderful art of letter writing, as well), and in many instances, it’s allowing our thumbs more exercise than our bodies. The absolute absence of hearing a human voice deliver a message, or looking at a human face, is destroying the most necessary art of communication with one another.

How could we all be so oblivious to the obvious? How could all of us possibly be sucked in so helplessly by continuing to buy the next, latest digital marvel?! Why? Because most of us have become eyeless! Unknowingly, for some incomprehensible reason, we seem to be allocating our precious time to the things in life that will hurt us the most!

Get off this speeding train to disaster! Stop answering the constant, taunting cry from marketers selling life-destroying gadgets with so little regard for the human conditions of companionship, love and understanding!
