SEVEN MEMBERS OF WELLINGTON DEBATE

HEADING TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT

Wellington Debate Team: (front) Michael Leatherman; (back) Connor Yeackley, Wellington Coach Paul L. Gaba, Caramen McDaniel, Greg Foster, and Kwadjo Walker.

West Palm Beach, FLApril 8, 2015 –

Seven high school debate students will represent Wellington High School at two national championship tournaments this summer.

Competing at the 2015 National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) National Speech and Debate Championship Tournament  in Dallas, Texas, from June 14-20, are five students: seniors Greg Foster, Michael Leatherman and Kwadjo Walker; and sophomores Caramen McDaniel and Connor Yeackley.

Walker will be the third-ever Wolverine to be part of the NSDA National Senate, a mock student congress where students debate and cross-examine each other over proposed federal legislation. Foster-Leatherman and McDaniel-Yeackley will compete in Public Forum Debate a two-on-two current event debate format modeled after CNN’s “Crossfire.”

“This ties the record for the most Wellington students to compete at the NSDA national championship,” said Wellington Debate Coach Paul L. Gaba, who has coached the team since 2002. “This is the fifth straight year Wellington has attended the NSDA championships as well, so we are definitely continuing to represent Wellington High School and the community at a high level.”

Walker, who was recognized as the Florida Oceanfront NSDA District’s “Graduating Senior of the Year,” is also in the running for National Student of the Year, a debater who best embodies the traits of the NSDA’s Code of Honor: humility, integrity, leadership, respect, and service.

Wellington also qualified four students to compete at the 2015 National Catholic Forensic League’s “Grand Nationals” championship, taking place on the campus of Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale May 23-24: Foster and Leatherman in Public Forum Debate; junior Victor Sanchez in Congressional Debate; and junior Savannah Race in Dramatic Performance.

With the double national qualification, Leatherman will have competed at six national championship tournaments during his four-year debate career, a school record. Both he and Foster will eclipse 2,000 NSDA Honor Points by the time their tenure with Wellington Debate concludes, the top two in program history.

“We’ve had a strong year,” Gaba said. “Greg and Mike won the UPenn Liberty Bell Classic round robin tournament, placed third at our state championship, and were consistently in ‘break’ rounds on the national circuit. Kwadjo advanced to the finals at the Sunvitational tournament at University School in Ft. Lauderdale. Victor was 11th in the state in Congress.”

The two national championship tournaments are estimated to cost $5,000, with the week in Dallas comprising most of the total. As such, Wellington Debate is seeking financial assistance from the public sector. Donations can be made online at http://www.gofundme.com/reddawndebaters., or by sending a check payable to “Wellington Debate,” 2101 Greenview Shores Blvd., Room 4-104, Wellington FL 33414. Awards packages range from “shout-outs” on Wellington Debate’s social media networks to your name being included on a classroom plaque to renaming the debate room in your honor.

April, 2015 – Wycliffe’s Director of Tennis Makes USA Proud

WYCLIFFE’S DIRECTOR OF TENNIS MAKES USA PROUD PLAYING IN ITF SENIORS TOURNAMENT

Submitted by Brad Lieberman

Wellington, FL, March 26, 2015 – Kam Kuchta, Wycliffe Golf & Country Club’s Tennis Director, just returned from representing the USA at the 2015 ITF Young Seniors World Team Championships in Antalya, Turkey.  Kam Kuchtawon two matches but came up short with a 3rd loss when playing against #1 seeded Great Britain. The Men’s 45’s Team USA had a great competition with an 8th place finish out of the 18 teams competing. Having red or green clay courts, plays a strong factor in determining the way you play the game.   In this tournament, players like Kam had to perform on red clay, which can be much slower, but for Eastern Europeans and South American players like the ones competing, it can be an advantage. At Wycliffe, we have green courts for quicker movement.

A majority of players had been on major tours around the world, but that didn’t deter Pros like Kam Kuchta from playing their absolute best throughout each match. In total, there were about 60 spectators in the stands cheering for the USA, including photographers, massage therapists and other contingencies cheering for USA.

“It was an incredible honor to be selected to represent my country and to be able to play against other top players from around the world.  Wearing a jacket with USA on the back, really makes you want to play even harder and be more competitive than ever. This was a big step up in the level of play in competition and overall intensity, but I enjoyed every moment of it” says Kam.

The 2016 ITF Seniors tournament will be held in Umar, Croatia. We’ll know soon enough if Kam is selected again to represent the USA.  If he is, not only will the USA be proud, but Wycliffe will support him the entire way.

Since being the Director of Tennis for Wycliffe Golf & Country Club for the past 10 years, Kam Kuchta has won 12 national championships and has been an instrumental leader in developing various tennis programs.

Keeping Up with Motivation

By Gabi Harris

It’s Springtime! No more having to endure the brink of groundbreaking coldness and degrees being in the negatives! It’s time to store away the turtlenecks and to bring out the florals. With spring comes a new sense of mind for me. Mainly that I don’t have spring clothes and that I should really engage in spring cleaning. It’s that point in the school year that it’s so close to the end of the year that I can almost touch it. I’ve recently been making lists in order to keep up with everything I need to attend to so I don’t forget. It keeps me calm, collected, and organized. Being a senior, at this point in the year I’m stressing over prom, graduation, college, work, school work and just balancing this all on my plate without going insane. Also trying not to endure the major side effects from senioritis which include just being completely unmotivated to do anything school related which most seniors have well already hit.

I find that keeping a planner throughout the whole school year is extremely effective. I don’t just use my agenda, or planner for school-related things, but for everything so I don’t forget. Highlighting events in certain colors helps a lot to make the organization process much quicker and easier to look at than just plainly writing it. Without my planner I probably wouldn’t know anything that’s going on in my school life, work or online classes; it has been a life saver to say the least. Keeping up with your planner just makes life easier and keeps you from questioning what’s due in a class or when your next test is.

Counting down seems to also keep me motivated. Just the words “thirty more days” or “just one more month” really help me when it comes to getting motivated. Just telling yourself little words of motivation here and there can really boost up your levels of knowing you need to do well in these final months of schooling. There’s no effort and it’s quick and easy just to remind yourself that you’re doing great (hopefully) and that the pain is almost over and summer is almost here.

When having your next test or homework assignment, try to make it more fun for yourself! No, don’t just reward yourself with phone breaks every ten minutes after reading a sentence in your textbook. Play some music that keeps you at your best or have a quick snack for every couple of pages that you pain to read through. The studying will pay off in the end and it’s not a waste of time! There are tons of ways to make studying a way more enjoyable time than just crying as you read your math textbook. Surprisingly those articles online about weird, quirky things to do while studying really can help! Check out this one. (http://www.buzzfeed.com/peggy/17-little-tricks-to-help-you-ace-all-your-tests?sub=2193072_1135720#.itapYk9N9) I find that writing information on index cards, even if you can’t use them on the test, is very efficient! Bring them with you to work, to the bathroom, when out with friends and just do a quick brush up on your lesson for your test and you’ll be good to go! Also rewriting topics in general helps with memorization.

You can do it! There’s only a few months left.  Just push yourself, don’t slack off with your studies – you’ll really regret it if you do.
