The West Palm Beach GreenMarket is “Seasoned to Perfection” and is celebrating 30 seasons of success!

The famed market, named the “Best Farmers Market” in the U.S. by USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice for three years in a row (in 2021, 2022 and 2023), will open as the largest market in its history with 130+ vendors. Vendors sell various products, including fresh fruits and vegetables, coffees and teas, flowers and plants, homemade specialty items, desserts and treats, and so much more.

The West Palm Beach GreenMarket’s mission is to provide the community with seasonal access to locally grown fresh fruits, vegetables, plants, and agricultural products. The market supports the southeast Florida agricultural community and stimulates agricultural development, particularly in Palm Beach County, by providing an outlet for locally grown crops and specialty products. 

In addition to its “Best Farmers Market” ranking, the West Palm Beach GreenMarket has also been featured in The Boston Globe and named the No. 1 greenmarket in Florida by Cooking Light magazine. In 2021, the GreenMarket was recognized by VISIT FLORIDA with a prestigious silver Flagler Award at the tourism marketing cooperative’s annual Florida Governor’s Conference on Tourism. 

During the GreenMarket, parking is available in the City’s public garages: Clematis, Banyan, City Center, Sapodilla, and Evernia. The Banyan and Evernia garages are closest to the event and are subject to the City’s all-day weekend flat rate of $5. The City Center, Clematis, and Sapodilla garages will be free during market hours, with current parking rates in effect afterward. Those interested in arriving by boat can also take advantage of the City’s free public docks. The Clematis Street Dock is the closest dock to the market.

Key November GreenMarket dates:

  • November 9: Monthly West Palm Beach GreenMarket Master Chef Showcase – Hot off the success of the first year-long GreenMarket chef competition, the City of West Palm Beach is bringing back the heat with the return of the City’s GreenMarket Master Chef Showcase. The bracket-style competition will feature two chefs going head-to-head to advance to the next round. NEW THIS SEASON: A limited number of VIP tickets will be sold to sample the final dishes. The Master Chef Showcase is free to observe on the second Saturday of each month. The final Chef Showcase to crown the second annual winner will be in April. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting competition!
  • November 23: Witness a star being born! See Sandi, the world’s only 700-ton holiday sand tree, take shape during the GreenMarket as her sculpting team works to prepare her for her big debut.

November 7: Roots Shakedown (Rock, Roots & Reggae) | Visit Website

Forged under the sun in Palm Beach County, Roots Shakedown is a tropical blend of rhythm and melody beyond the usual definition. The band’s roots can be found on the beach, but their diverse influences have created space for the five-piece to thrive and carve a niche. Combined with their unwavering pursuit to spread a positive message to the masses, the result is a reggae-rock fusion that is too catchy for its own good.

November 14: Cover to Cover (Rock)

Cover to Cover is a popular and talented rock ‘n’ roll band playing various hits from the 1950s through the 1990s. The band puts its stamp on songs anywhere from rockabilly, punk, and arena rock to ’80s and ’90s radio hits. Audiences rave that they love the band’s variety, performing songs no one else plays but everybody knows and loves!

November 21: Terry Hanck (Blues & R&B) | Visit Website

Singer, songwriter, saxman, and three-time Blues Music Award winner Terry Hanck is in the Modern Pantheon of tenor sax greats. His sound is at the nexus of classic New Orleans R&B, Chicago blues and soul, West Coast honk, and Memphis rock ‘n’ roll. Always a Clematis favorite, Terry is joined by Johnny Cat Soubrand on guitar, Tim Wagar on bass (both from California), and John Yarling, a Florida stalwart, on Drums.

Save the date for the return of Sandi, the world’s only 35-foot, 700-ton holiday sand tree. For the first time all season, Sandi will light up the night and dance to a synchronized set list at the annual Clematis by Night Holiday Tree Lighting. The festive celebration will include free live music, remarks from West Palm Beach leadership, extra activities and games, and more. Please note: Sandi’s music and light show runs until 10 p.m. All other activities, including the live music and holiday boutique, end at 9 p.m.

The City of West Palm Beach invites the public to attend the opening day of the West Palm Beach GreenMarket’s 30th season on Saturday, October 5, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The famed market, named the “Best Farmers Market” in the U.S. by USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice for three years in a row (in 2021, 2022 and 2023), will open as the largest market in its history with 130+ vendors. Vendors will sell various products, including fresh fruits and vegetables, coffees and teas, flowers and plants, homemade specialty items, desserts and treats, and so much more.

Of note, opening day will include a special ceremony with City of West Palm Beach leadership to celebrate the start of the season (around 9:45 a.m.).

October 3: DeLeon Oktoberfest Band (Bavarian Heritage Music) | Visit Website

Spanning three generations of accordion players, the DeLeon Oktoberfest Band offers an authentic Oktoberfest experience like none other. Creating the atmosphere of a traditional “oom-pah” style Polka band with the energy of a live festival band, the DeLeon Band can sing and play all the classic Bavarian heritage music, as well as more contemporary tunes from today’s Oktoberfest.

A frightful twist on the weekly Clematis by Night series, Clematis by Fright is a FREE, family-friendly event that will offer fun for everyone. Activities include games, “Trick-or-Truck,” where kids can safely get candy from first responders and public works vehicles, hayrides, games, face painting, and more. There will also be a costume raffle with prizes.

During Clematis by Fright, attendees can enjoy a FREE concert by the ’80s cover band Nerd Ranger. Concertgoers will enjoy the sights and sounds of the ’80s.

Formed in 2010, the KillBillies are a South Florida-based folk and roots band with influences of Americana, alt-country, English and Irish folk, and punk music. Their heady mix of Celtic, rock, punk, bluegrass, and country makes their music excitingly different. Pairing their signature unusual instrumentation of banjo, upright bass, guitar, and saxophone with their blend of foot drums, the band has created their unique sound. Add their three-part vocal harmonies, and KillBillies is a musical experience that will get concert attendees smiling and dancing!

September 5: New Horizon (R&B & top 40)

The New Horizon band has funk, R&B, blues and jazz sounds that will make guests want to move their bodies, tap their feet and clap their hands. The members of the New Horizon band have a wide range of talent, opening for artists such as Percy Sledge, Archie Bell, B.B. King and Georgia McCray. Several members have also played at the biggest waterfront festival in South Florida — SunFest. Back on the West Palm Beach Waterfront for Clematis by Night, this band is sure to get the party started!

September 12: Andrew Morris Band (Country) | Visit Website

Performing since he was a child, Andrew Morris has the heart and soul of a country music legend. With a lifelong love of country music, Morris embraces the traditional style of country. The Andrew Morris Band plays all over South Florida, from Vero Beach to Miami, covering everything from country classics to the latest hits. The band is also known to throw in a little southern and classic rock from time to time. Together since 2010, the band has honed their style and always leaves the crowds wanting more. One fan said, “I don’t like country music, but I love these guys!”

September 19: Cortadito (Cuban Son) | Visit Website

Named after a favorite caffeinated pick-me-up, Cortadito is a Cuban folk/country music band from Miami, connecting the past and present to bring concertgoers the future of Cuban Son. The evolution of Cortadito has led to it becoming one of the torchbearers of a pop culture phenomenon that is two centuries strong. As a traditional folk and acoustic band that focuses on performing one of the earliest styles of Cuban country music known as Son (pronounced sown), their sound can best be described as reminiscent of the famed Buena Vista Social Club.

Catabella is a synonym for talent, professionalism and fun! Catabella specializes in Latin music (salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia, and more). However, they also perform top ’40s pop, oldies, disco, and classic rock. The group comprises young yet experienced professional musicians who bring diversity and energy to the dance floor.

After three death-defying adventures defeating world-class villains with his unmatched courage and mad martial arts skills, Po, the Dragon Warrior, is called upon by destiny to give it a rest already. More specifically, he’s tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace.

That poses a couple of obvious problems. First, Po knows as much about spiritual leadership as he does about the paleo diet, and second, he needs to quickly find and train a new Dragon Warrior before he can assume his new lofty position.

Place of Hope Hosts Packed Back-to-School Anti-Human Trafficking Workshops

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – In a powerful effort to combat the alarming rise of human trafficking in Florida, Place of Hope hosted a series of free workshops across Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.  The events drew dozens of parents and students, all eager to learn how to protect themselves and their loved ones from the dangers of online predators, grooming, and human trafficking. Florida, which ranks third in the nation, and Palm Beach County which ranks third in the state for calls to the National Trafficking Hotline, is facing a hidden epidemic of human trafficking that often occurs right in front of us.

The workshops, which kicked off last week at Place of Hope’s Kid’s Sanctuary campus, located west of the Turnpike near Wellington, provided crucial insights into recognizing the warning signs of human trafficking and taking preventive measures. These sessions are designed to equip middle and high school students, as well as their parents, with the knowledge needed to stay safe in a world where the internet has become a primary tool for predators.

 Kristen Adams, an “angel mom” with Place of Hope and one of the key organizers of the workshops, emphasized the critical role of awareness and communication in protecting children. “I’m a mom at home, and I’m also an aunt to lots of nieces and nephews,” Adams said. “We grow up in a home that we think is safe, but once our children walk outside our doors, they’re open to the entire world. Cell phones are changing the way that we parent, and we have to be aware and knowledgeable about what to look for—not just with our own children, but with others—so we can help protect them all.”

Adams highlighted the importance of parental controls and monitoring apps like Bark and Qustodio, which provide parents with insights into what their children are exposed to online. “It’s our job to know what they’re getting into, even if it means not winning the popular vote with our kids,” she added.

The workshops also provided practical tips for parents to identify potential trafficking situations in their neighborhoods. Some of the red flags discussed included excessive security measures at a house, blacked-out windows, and unusual amounts of traffic in and out of a residence. Parents were also advised to watch for sudden changes in their children’s behavior, such as new tattoos or expensive items that they cannot explain, as these could be indicators of exploitation.

Jamie Bond Ciancio, Director of Advancement for Place of Hope North County and the leader of the workshop, stressed the often-overlooked reality of human trafficking. “What is most shocking for people to find out is that human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of children are not what we think they are when it comes to Hollywood,” Ciancio said. “Ninety percent of the children and youth who are being exploited, sexually abused, and trafficked know their perpetrator.”  

Ciancio encouraged parents to foster open communication with their children, making them feel safe and understood rather than focusing on punishment. “If they feel those things at home, we’ve seen success in opening dialogues to have these tough conversations.” She also said when it comes to internet chat rooms that you shouldn’t be talking to someone you can’t text or call on the phone.

The workshops were a stark reminder of the vigilance required to protect children in today’s digital age.  In addition to education and outreach, Place of Hope has also taken in more than 50 human trafficking survivors providing foster care, housing, support, and rehabilitation services. Wellington Regional Medical Center Completes First Inspire Therapy Procedure

Wellington, FL — August 15, 2024 — Wellington Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce Dr. Deborah Loney has completed the first Inspire procedure at Wellington Regional Medical Center. Inspire is an FDA-approved, mask-free obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment option for people who cannot use Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy.

OSA affects 22 million Americans annually. When left untreated, OSA can cause vehicle and workplace accidents, worsening mood and memory, stroke, heart attack, and even death. It occurs when the airway collapses during sleep and blocks the flow of oxygen to the brain. The brain senses a lack of oxygen and wakes the body up just long enough to take a breath, then falls back asleep. This cycle repeats throughout the night and causes poor, disruptive sleep.

Inspire works inside the body with a patient’s natural breathing process to treat sleep apnea. Mild stimulation opens the airway during sleep, allowing oxygen to flow naturally. The patient uses a small handheld remote to turn Inspire on before bed and off when they wake up. The Inspire system is implanted during a short, outpatient procedure. The system is placed under the skin of the neck and chest through two small incisions. Most patients return home the same day and take over-the-counter pain medications to manage pain as needed.

The safety and efficacy of Inspire was evaluated during the STAR clinical trial*. Five-year STAR trial outcomes show patients using Inspire experience significant reductions in sleep apnea events and significant improvements in quality-of-life measures. There have been over 150 peer-reviewed publications on Inspire. These publications show results consistent with those seen in the STAR trial.

Draft Party Kicks Off August 19th at Driftwood 

Prepare for the ultimate end-of-summer event for cocktail aficionados, hospitality pros and Palm Beach locals. The top craft cocktail spots in Boynton Beach—The Butcher & The Bar, Driftwood, and Sweetwater—have united to present the Battle of the Beaches Cocktail Showdown. This six-event series will showcase the area’s best bartending talent in an interactive cocktail contest.

Join us at the Draw Party on Monday, August 19th at Driftwood. Witness as bartenders discover their preliminary competitors, igniting the stage for a fierce competition. With three bartenders per contest, only the victors will progress to the grand finale on November 11th.

Competitors will be judged by a panel of four, including three local hospitality and media personalities and one randomly selected audience member. They will be evaluated on their mixology mastery—presentation, taste, creativity and more. They’re competing for several prizes and the ultimate bragging rights as the best mixologist in Boynton Beach.

Better known as The Palm Beach Artist, Sandra Thompson is a living legend who has for the rest of time preserved the history of Palm Beach’s European architecture in her over 400 lovingly crafted and detailed portraits of some of the most beautiful homes on Palm Beach, Florida. 

Born in NY, she grew up on the North Shore of Long Island and studied art and design at Cooper Union before working with Grey Advertising and Redbook Magazine. She moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1961 and was the first editorial artist for the Fort Lauderdale News and Sun Sentinel. In 1999 she moved to Palm Beach, where she fell in love with the architecture and started painting some of the most well-known locations and buildings. More than 160 of her paintings have been featured on covers of The Palm Beach Real Estate Guide. 

Ms. Thompson is the founding owner of the Hangen Thompson Gallery on Palm Beach in Via DeMario off Worth Ave. She won the Next Generation Indie Book Award for Palm Beach, A Retrospective, The Art of Sandra Thompson. The “Paint the World Gold” art reception at Zero Empty Spaces (Palm Beach Gardens) will feature artworks from 22 resident artists to raise funds and awareness for the Kids’ Cancer Foundation during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Palm Beach Gardens, FL — September 3, 2024 — Zero Empty Spaces is proud to announce its upcoming art reception titled “Paint the World Gold” in support of the Kids’ Cancer Foundation (KCF). The event will be held at Zero Empty Spaces’ Legacy Place location, located at 11300 Legacy Ave, Unit 140, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410. The public is warmly invited to attend this FREE group art show, with festivities kicking off on September 12, 2024.

As September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, “Paint the World Gold” will spotlight the work of 22 talented resident artists whose art features the gold ribbon symbolizing Childhood Cancer. This group art show not only aims to foster a vibrant cultural experience but also to support a vital cause.
