Trunk or Treat Event a Safe Alternative to Trick or Treating

Halloween is arriving a few days early in the Village of Wellington! Join us on Saturday, October 25th from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. for our free Trunk or Treat event in the student parking lot at Wellington Community High School located at 2101 Greenview Shores Boulevard. Returning for the sixth year in a row, Trunk or Treat is a safe, family-friendly twist on trick or treating where volunteers decorate their vehicles and distribute Halloween treats out of their trunks. Children ages 10 and under are invited to trick or treat from vehicle to vehicle. Families can also enjoy music, refreshments, a bounce house, craft tables, food trucks and more. There will also be a costume contest for children and a trunk decoration contest with gift cards for the winners.

If you’re interested in decorating your car and passing out candy, contact Meridith Tuckwood, Community Services Specialist, at (561) 753-2476 or by email at mtuckwood@wellingtonfl.gov. This is a great volunteer opportunity for families, and high school students who drive are also encouraged to participate.

Trunk or Treat is made possible through Wellington’s partnership with Wellington Community High School’s DECA program, Wellington InterFaith, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, and Walgreens.

Status as Federally Qualified Health Center

Funding creates expansion of affordable, quality health care to Palm Beach County

(West Palm Beach, FL) October 15, 2014  — FoundCare, Inc., is celebrating five years in the community providing access to high quality, patient-centered healthcare in Palm Beach County.  As a newly designated, Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), FoundCare has joined a national movement of over 1000 health centers in this initiative. There are only five FQHC’s in Palm BeachCounty.

FoundCare, which opened its health center in 2009, is now positioned to respond to the health care needs of the entire county.  FoundCare uses a sliding fee scale based on income to assess patient charges. It also accepts Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance and self-pay. FoundCare is in the process of expanding services by hiring additional medical and dental professionals, enabling them to integrate more patient services including behavioral health and adult dentistry.

“The FQHC designation is great news, as it allows us to better serve the most vulnerable in our community – the uninsured and medically needy,” said Yolette Bonnet, Chief Executive Officer, FoundCare, Inc. “A person’s income shouldn’t determine their ability to receive quality healthcare.”

In 2013, FoundCare’s health center served 4,531 patients, up from 2,801 in 2012, with over 12,000 patient visits. Among those patients, 74% were living with income below federal poverty level and 34% were pediatric patients. Of those patients treated, 67% were uninsured, 25% were on Medicaid, 4% paid with private insurance, 2% were on Medicare, 2% used other public insurance.

“The healthcare landscape is changing dramatically,” said Dr. Katina Bonaparte, Medical Director of FoundCare’s HealthCenter. “We are responding to the need of the larger community for quality, comprehensive medical care for men, women and children.”

FoundCare’s HealthCenter offer pediatrics, family practice, chronic disease management, laboratory work, x-rays and dentistry. The Center hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8 am – 5 pm, Tuesday and Thursday 11 am – 7 pm and Saturday 8 am – noon.
To schedule an appointment call 561-432-5849 or visit www.foundcare.org.

Palm Beach County – The Junior League of the Palm Beaches is looking for local agencies in Palm Beach County that are in need of programming support or have volunteer opportunities that benefit the children and young adults in the foster care system.

In early 2014, following a year of research and analysis, our membership of over 750 women selected the issue of children and young adults in the foster care system as our focus for community impact over the next several years. When talking about this newly adopted focus area, President Ashley Schutz said, “The Junior League is currently concentrating the majority of its volunteer and financial resources on initiatives that center around foster care in Palm Beach County, in an effort to create positive change around this critical population.”

(West Palm Beach, Fla.)  On Friday, more than 100 special guests showed up for a sneak peek of the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium’s newest traveling blockbuster exhibit, Afterlife: Tombs & Treasures of Ancient Egypt. Among the excited crowd were several school groups from Renaissance Charter School and Belle Glade Elementary, who were also treated to the festivities and privilege of seeing the exhibit before its opening to the public.

“You’re going to see mummies, mummies and more mummies,” said Lew Crampton, Science Center CEO, while addressing the excited crowd.  “One of our mummies is at St. Mary’s Medical Center right now awaiting a special CT Scan – because that is what we are all about, solving scientific mysteries!” Speaking more specifically to the children in attendance, Crampton continued, “You should pay attention to science, technology, engineering and math – they are fun subjects and the future of jobs in our community.”

In true Science Center style, the highly anticipated blockbuster exhibition has interactive components, making it feel like guests have taken a trip directly to Egypt.  Most notably, visitors can step into the centerpiece of the exhibition, a full- size reconstruction of the burial chamber of the great Pharaoh Thutmose III.

On tour for more than 10 years and seen by more than 4.5 million people worldwide, Afterlife is coming from a wildly-popular tour in Asia where science seekers lined up for more than six hours for a glimpse at the largest current touring exhibition of authentic Egyptian material. Winning the International Award at the UK Museum and Heritage Awards ceremony in 2012, the exhibit features more than 200 exquisite and original artifacts, all of which are on display in North America for the first time ever.  Afterlife is on display through Saturday, April 18, 2015.

“We are so happy that this is another great learning opportunity for children in our community,” said Glenn Jergensen, executive director of the Tourism Development Council.  “We are also equally excited about the tourism opportunities.  The Science Center continues to be a leading force in our cultural community and we are pleased to continue supporting its efforts.”

Palm Beach County Commissioner, Hal Valeche, shared similar praise and sentiments for both organizations, recognizing their partnership and continued commitment to Palm Beach County as a tourism destination.

Additional VIP attendees included: Veronica Arietta, Daniel Boudet, Bebe Novick-Brodigan, Lisa and Nate Cousineau, Victoria Van Dam, Astrid Dawson, Kerry Jamieson, Eric M. Kelly, Rick Netzel and Dee Wade, representing sponsors and partners of the exhibition, including the Cultural Council, Palm Beach Illustrated magazine and Quantum Foundation.

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, recently named the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches’ nonprofit of the year, features more than 50 hands-on educational exhibits, an 8,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquarium- featuring both local and exotic marine life, a digital planetarium, conservation research station, Florida exhibit hall and an interactive Everglades exhibit.  All exhibits will be on display during Afterlife’s special showing.

Admission to Afterlife: Tombs & Treasures of Ancient Egypt and the Science Center’s permanent exhibits will be $19.95 for adults, $15.95 for children aged 3 to 12, $17.95 for seniors aged 62 and older, and children under 3 are free.  Admission for Science Center members is $8. Planetarium shows and miniature golf are not included in general admission pricing. Guests will also be able to select a Science Center-only pass, granting access to the Center’s general offerings for a reduced admission price.

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach and is open Monday – Friday from 9am-5pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-6pm.  For more information, call 561-832-1988 or visit www.sfsciencecenter.org.  Like the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium on Facebook and follow them on Twitter @SFScienceCenter.

58th International Red Cross Ball Goes Around The World In Eighty Days

Chairman Patrick Park brings the Palm Beach Tradition back to The Mar-a-Lago Club

(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.)—Ambassadors, foreign diplomats and international philanthropists from around the world will be returning to Palm Beach this season when The American Red Cross South Florida Region presents the 58th International Red Cross Ball on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at The Mar-a-Lago Club. The 2015 ball, considered to be the highlight of the Palm Beach social season, is being chaired by Patrick Park. He, along with International Honorary Chairs Melania and Donald Trump and Honorary Chairs Michele and Howard Kessler and Kathryn and Leo Vecellio, will help transport guests Around the World in Eighty Days, the theme for this year’s spectacular gala celebration.

Founded in 1957 by Marjorie Merriweather Post, the annual ball raises significant funds in support of the vital mission of one of the nation’s premier humanitarian organizations, the American Red Cross. For almost 100 years locally, The American Red Cross South Florida Region has given hope and help to people in their greatest hour of need – meeting the physical and emotional needs of disaster victims, teaching lifesaving skills such as CPR and First Aid, and supporting military members and their families.

“We look forward to an evening where the world comes together in support of one common goal,” noted Ball Chairman Patrick Park. “The International Red Cross Ball has an established legacy for diplomacy, goodwill and philanthropy, and I’m delighted to lend my support to this year’s Ball.  Our goal is to raise awareness and to promote more good will among our constituents around the globe.”

Patrick Park is a director of Park Corporation, a company founded by his father, Raymond Park, in 1949.  The multi-national corporation is based in Cleveland with businesses located around the United States.  In addition to being a successful businessman, Mr. Park has helped raise awareness and millions of dollars for countless charities, including the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Cleveland Clinic Florida, March of Dimes, Palm Beach Police Foundation, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, The International Society and many more.  A trained classical pianist, Mr. Park has an enormous appreciation of the performing and visual arts. He is the proud father of two married daughters and grandfather of two grandsons.

“Patrick Park is one of the region’s most respected and admired philanthropists, who has made a difference in so many lives,” noted Rob Levine, Chief Executive Officer for American Red Cross, South Florida Region.  We are profoundly honored to have him chairing the ball this year.”

The American Red Cross South Florida Region is part of the largest and most diverse humanitarian relief organization in the United States. With more than 1,800 passionate, dedicated volunteers, they serve two million people across Palm Beach, Martin, Okeechobee, St. Lucie and Indian River counties. Throughout the region, every 28 hours on average, Red Cross volunteers answer the call and respond to provide relief to individuals and families whose lives have been turned upside down by a devastating home fire, flood or other disaster.

Last year more than 450 guests, including ambassadors from The Netherlands, Italy, Hungary and Georgia, joined forces to support of the American Red Cross.  Proceeds from the 58th Annual International Red Cross Ball benefit the mission of the organization — to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Tickets to the 58th International Red Cross Ball start at $1,000. For more information on tickets, sponsorships or other support of the American Red Cross, please contact Jennifer Durrant at 561-650-9105 or Jennifer.Durrant@redcross.org.
