Palm Beach Photographic Centre to Present

SEEING DOUBLE: The Best of DOUBLEtruck Magazine

November 13 – January 9 in West Palm Beach

Public is Invited to Opening Reception on November 13

(West Palm Beach, FL – October 2, 2014)  Fatima NeJame, president and chief executive officer of the world-renowned Palm Beach Photographic Centre (PBPC), today announced that the next exhibition would be Seeing Double: The Best of DOUBLEtruck Magazine. Running November 13 through January 9, this exhibition will present more than 100 of the best photographs featured in the first decade of the award-winning quarterly magazine, which bills itself as “The World’s Best News Pictures in Print!”

As a major bonus, the show will feature numerous Back Stories, revealing “the hearts and minds of the bravo photojournalists who capture those one of a kind moments of history.” In fact, the exhibition is a virtual time capsule of some of the most memorable moments in recent history captured by world-renowned photojournalists.

“Hosting this epic exhibition offers viewers the opportunity to learn about, or revisit, the celebrations and tragedies that have defined recent history through iconic images that illuminate the human condition. Many have called DOUBLEtruck Magazine, the new LIFE Magazine,” said NeJame. “This exhibition will be truly spectacular.”

Scott Mc Kiernan, publisher of DOUBLEtruck, director of KONA Gallery and Photojournalism Center, and the founder of ZUMA Press, the largest picture agency and wire service in the world run by a photojournalist, is curating Seeing Double. Launched in 2004, DOUBLEtruck is dedicated to promoting outstanding photojournalism and showcasing high-impact photography of important world issues. The magazine’s title refers to an ad or editorial project that covers two facing paces.

“The magazine was inspired by the photojournalism renaissance in 2003, when major publications around the globe ran amazing picture content of the Iraq conflict over numerous two-page spreads,” said Mc Kiernan. “Each image featured in the magazine tells the story as only a strong single image can.”

For each issue of DOUBLEtruck, Mc Kiernan reviews more than a million recent images by over 300 newspapers, 90 agencies and wire services and thousands of photojournalists. The end result has won DOUBLEtruck the prestigious Best Use of Photography Award for Magazines and numerous other top editing, publishing and photography awards, including Communications Arts, Pictures of The Year International (POYi) and the annual Best of Photojournalism Award from the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), which recently held its annual awards ceremony in West Palm Beach in conjunction with the BOP exhibition at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre (which is still on display through the end of October).

The public is invited to the opening reception for Seeing Double: The Best of DOUBLEtruck Magazine. It will be held on Thursday, November 13, from 6 to 8 p.m.

YWCA’s 2014 Barry Krischer Humanitarian Award

The YWCA of Palm Beach County presented its 2014 Barry Krischer Humanitarian Award to Officer Elizabeth Raleigh of the Jupiter Police Department at the opening ceremony of Domestic Violence Awareness Month on October 6, 2014, at the Mandel Public Library in West Palm Beach.

Established in 2008 to honor the then-retiring State Attorney, the award recognizes a law enforcement, social services, health care or legal professional who has gone beyond the normal call of duty to assist or advocate for a victim of domestic violence.

Officer Raleigh exemplified the spirit of the award by going above normal job requirements when she assisted a victim of domestic abuse by helping her get away from her abuser and into her own apartment.  Officer Raleigh organized an online fundraiser through which she obtained furniture and other items necessary for the victim to get back on her feet.

“We are so pleased to honor such a worthy recipient as Officer Raleigh,” said Suzanne Turner, CEO of the YWCA.

(WEST PALM BEACH) — Leadership at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium announced an agreement with B/E Aerospace to serve as the presenting sponsor for the SFSCA’s Discovery Plaza. The new entryway to the expanded Science Center now bears signage recognizing B/E Aerospace’s sponsorship role. B/E Aerospace CEO Amin Khoury was on hand recently to unveil the signage and celebrate his company’s 10-year, $250,000 underwriting partnership with the local nonprofit.

With a mission to “open every mind to science,” the South Florida Science Center & Aquarium unveiled its expanded facilities last summer and now features more than 50 hands-on educational exhibits, an 8,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquarium- featuring both local and exotic marine life, a digital planetarium, conservation research station, Florida exhibit hall and an interactive Everglades exhibit.

“The gift from B/E Aerospace will allow us to introduce the Science Center to even more audiences with expanded programming and new exhibits,” said SFSCA CEO Lew Crampton. “It is especially significant that a company like B/E Aerospace recognizes the Science Center as our county’s headquarters for informal science education. We know that our area’s most lucrative future jobs are focused on science, technology, engineering and math and you never know what exposure to science will get a kid excited about it as a career.  We are grateful to Mr. Khoury for his company’s continued partnership, which will also include a separate grant to allow for collaboration between the Science Center and the Kravis Center – two of the most significant cultural institutions in West Palm Beach.”

Headquartered in Wellington, FL, B/E Aerospace is the worldwide leading manufacturer of aircraft passenger cabin interior products for the commercial and business jet aircraft markets.  B/E Aerospace is also the leading global distributor of aerospace fasteners.  B/E Aerospace has leading worldwide market shares in all of its major product lines and serves virtually all of the world’s airlines, aircraft manufacturers and leasing.

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach and is open Monday – Friday from 9am-5pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-6pm.
