PALM BEACH COUNTY CHABADS TO HOST MEGA CHALLAH BAKE SEPT. 22 AT WEST PALM BEACH MARRIOTT

—Hundreds of Jewish Women to Bake Challah Together For Jewish New Year 2014—

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Sept. 2— A Mega Challah Bake—organized by the Chabad centers of the northern section of Palm Beach County—will be held 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22 at the Marriott Hotel in West Palm Beach to honor the upcoming the 2014 Jewish New Year of Rosh Hashana. The event is scheduled to bring together hundreds of women from Palm Beach County to bake challah, a braided bread loaf traditionally eaten by Jews on the Sabbath and holidays.

“Few Jewish foods evoke the same warm sentiments as Challah. Many remember the aroma of freshly baked Challah in their grandmothers’ kitchens, and always on the table for Shabbath dinner with family and friends,” said Chaya Gancz, director of Chabad of West Palm Beach, which is among the 10 Chabad centers hosting the event.

“The challah baking process has always been regarded as a time for spiritual reflection and serves as a reminder to nurture our relationships,” she said, and all women and girls over age 16 are invited to join the Mega Challah Bake, regardless of Jewish knowledge, affiliation or background.

The program will include a hands-on workshop, teaching participants the secret to great tasting challah from scratch. It also includes a beautiful dessert buffet and a soul stirring musical performance by a local Jewish singer.

“On the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah, many will be busy preparing their holiday meals. This event is an opportunity to not only focus on one important dinner food, but also the spiritual reflection that accompanies it,” she said. “A few moments of introspection will be included to pray together for health, happiness, prosperity and any other blessings needed, with the hope that the power in numbers will help strengthen each one’s prayers.”

Advance reservations required. Cost: $20 before Sept. 7 or $25 after. Reservation and seat choices can be made and online at www.TheChallahEvent.com.  For additional information contact Chaya Gancz at Chaya@Jewishwpb.com or 561-714-2349.

In addition to West Palm Beach, participating in the bake are Chabad Centers of Jupiter, NorthernPalm BeachIsland, South Palm Beach, Palm BeachGardens, Martin/St. Lucien, Wellington, Lake Worth, Royal Palm Beach, and Boynton Beach.

Chabad is a philosophy, a movement, and an organization. It is considered to be the most dynamic force in Jewish life today. Some 4,000 full-time emissary families direct some 3,000 Chabad Houses and Centers in the United States and around the world, many on or adjoining college and university campuses.

Chabad of West Palm Beach is located at 2112 N. Jog Rd. on the NE corner of Jog & Okeechobee.

September, 2014 – Go Nuts!

Go NutsJonLipshaw

By Jon Lipshaw

Nuts have many health benefits that some people may not be aware of. According to mayoclinic.org, “People who eat nuts as part of a heart-healthy diet can lower the low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or “bad”) cholesterol level in their blood. High LDL is one of the primary causes of heart disease.”

57422040 Mixed nuts

Nuts contain unsaturated fats such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats which both lower bad cholesterol levels. Nuts also contain Omega-3s which are a healthy form of fatty acids that seem to help the human heart by preventing dangerous heart rhythms that can lead to heart attacks. If that’s not enough, nuts also have fiber, Vitamin E, Plant sterols and L-arginine (an amino acid) which are all healthy for humans.

According to medicalnewstoday.com, “Almonds are packed with vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber, and are associated with a number of health benefits. Just a handful of almonds, approximately one ounce, contains one-eighth of our necessary daily protein.” Almonds are also the nut with the richest vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant.”

Peanuts are healthy as well, according to whfoods.com, “Studies of diets with a special emphasis on peanuts have shown that this little legume is a big ally for a healthy heart. In one such randomized, double-blind, cross-over study involving 22 subjects, a high monounsaturated diet that emphasized peanuts and peanut butter decreased cardiovascular disease risk by an estimated 21% compared to the average American diet.”

Walnuts containing the most antioxidants compared to any other nut and are also the richest in omega-3 fatty acids, which fight inflammation. According to “Thehealthsite.com, “contrary to what people believe, walnuts are actually good for weight management since an ounce of walnut contains 2.5g of omega 3 fats, 4g of protein and 2g of fibre that help provide satiety (the feeling of being full).” Walnuts also contain melatonin so they’re great before you go to bed.

There’s plenty of more nuts that are very healthy that I didn’t mention in this article. So next time you’re looking to grab a snack go nuts.
