Woody Allen’s Women: In Film and In Life – A Tell-All Conversation

Diane Keaton
Diane Keaton

Featuring Julie Gilbert, novelist, biographer, playwright and founder/instructor of The Writers’ Academy at the Kravis Center; and Lee Wolf, noted author, lecturer and Kravis Center Board member.

Woody, the man alone… Hardly!  Woody Allen is synonymous with women.  In every one of his films, in every article, in every photo he is and always has been with a woman.  In his personal life from Louise Lasser to Soon-Yi, and in his auteur’s life from Diane Keaton to Scarlett Johansson, he has devoted himself to the complexities of women in love.  Lee Wolf and Julie Gilbert return to investigate the highs and lows of Woody Allen’s personal and creative life and how the two converge.  Sponsored by Leona F. Chanin.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2015 AT 11:30 A.M.

Ballet Superstar Marcelo Gomes interviewed by Steven Caras

Marcelo Gomes, Principal Dancer with American Ballet Theatre, is one of very few true celebrities in the history of classical dance.  Houses around the world sell out within minutes after he’s scheduled to appear, reminiscent of a time when Rudolf Nureyev emerged as the first male ballet icon since Nijinsky. Gomes is equal parts artist and sex symbol, renowned for his spectacular technique, attentive partnering, and mind boggling versatility.  Join former New York City Ballet dancer Steven Caras with Mr. Gomes in an intimate tête-à-tête accompanied by arresting images and video and discover for yourself why this charismatic ‘Danseur Noble’ is referred to by The New York Times as “a hero to believe in.”  Sponsored by Susan Bloom.

MONDAY, MARCH 16, 2015 AT 11:30 A.M.

Princess Grace: Her Movies, Her Men, Her Monaco

Breaking away from a stringent family of means to pursue an acting career was the first of many triumphs in a life that deemed Grace Kelly true aristocracy – from Philadelphia society to Hollywood stardom to European royalty – her final role as that of Her Serene Highness, Princess of Monaco.

Join Lee Wolf and Steven Caras in a revealing conversation through which the real Grace Kelly emerges – an icy-eyed, hot-blooded icon who pulled those signature white gloves over many an eye during the naïve 1950s when one assumed all girls from ‘good’ families were in fact, good girls.  Sponsored by Leona F. Chanin.

MUMMIES, KINGS AND GOLD DEBUT AT SCIENCE CENTER THIS FALL

South Florida Science Center and Aquarium hosts North American premier of Afterlife: Tombs & Treasures of Ancient Egypt

Afterlife_2

(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.)  –  A one-way ticket to Egypt will cost less than $20 this fall, thanks to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, as the local attraction is taking visitors on a journey thousands of years in the making.  Stepping into the Science Center on Saturday, October 11, 2014, opening day of Afterlife: Tombs & Treasures of Ancient Egypt, guests will feel like they have stepped into a time machine, warping them to an elaborate ancient empire.

In true Science Center-style, the highly anticipated blockbuster exhibition will have interactive components, making it feel like this transporting has really occurred.  Most notably, guests can step into the centerpiece of the exhibition, a full- size reconstruction of the burial chamber of the great Pharaoh Thutmose III.

On tour for more than 10 years, and seen by more than 4.5 million people worldwide, Afterlife will be coming from a wildly-popular tour in Asia, where science-seekers lined up for more than 6 hours for a glimpse at the largest current touring exhibition of authentic Egyptian material. Winning the International Award at the UK Museum and Heritage Awards ceremony in 2012, visitors will be mystified by 200 exquisite and original artifacts, all of which are on display in North America for the first time ever.  The exhibit will run through Saturday, April 18, 2015.

“The afterlife is thrilling,” said Lew Crampton, Science Center CEO.  “Every culture has particular beliefs and customs about what happens when we die, with the Egyptians known for some of the most interesting and elaborate traditions.  Preparations for the Pharaohs’ tombs were incredibly intricate and embodied their deeply-rooted beliefs in life beyond the physical world. Excavated directly from the Egyptian tombs and towns, including the Valley of the Kings at Luxor, this is the largest touring exhibition of Egyptian material currently available – and it will be making its North American debut, right here at the South Florida Science Center!  This scientific, environmental and cultural look at the lives of ancient Egyptians is sure to create awe-inspiring moments, and lead to meaningful and interesting science education for all ages. We are grateful to Quantum Foundation for their assistance in underwriting this important exhibit.  Quantum’s support has resulted in great benefits in our community and beyond.”

Among the most significant artifacts making its debut, is the Ramesside male mummy believed to be the son of Ramses II, often referred to as “Ramses the Great.” The identity of this 3000-year-old mummy was most recently revealed through an advance Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan carried out during an episode of “Mummy Forensics” on The History Channel. Additionally, there are several other mummies in the exhibition, including a wrapped mummy of a woman and a mummy of a young girl believed to be about 4 – 8 years old.

Visitors to the exhibition begin their voyage to the Afterlife by discovering how sophisticated and rich ancient Egyptians’ lives were through displays related to life in ancient Egypt featuring many rare objects which illustrate their culture as well as their mastery of beautiful design.  They are introduced to the mysterious preparations the Egyptians made for death and burial which they believed would allow them to live forever.  Visitors encounter ancient animal mummies, an extraordinary number of human mummies, exquisite golden mummy masks and coffins, and strange magical figures from ancient tombs.  The exhibition culminates in making the journey to the Valley of the Kings by entering an exact facsimile of the tomb chamber of Thutmose III and discovering the Ramesside male mummy – one of the best preserved mummies in existence.

Widely considered the ‘Napoleon’ of Egypt, and a military genius by historians, Thutmose III was an active expansionist ruler.  Reigning over Egypt for more than 50 years, he has been credited with conquering more land than any pharaoh before or after him, expanding Egypt’s borders to create the largest empire ever conquered and ruled by one king.

“We know that a passion for science is at the heart of any health care career so, as a health care foundation, we’re excited that the South Florida Science Center is growing and developing as a center for science education in the region,” said Quantum Foundation President Eric Kelly.  “Big exhibits like this help draw new people in to explore the world of science and this exhibit will encourage those who haven’t experienced the Science Center to come and see how just how exciting it is.”

United Exhibits Group of Copenhagen, in cooperation with Bolton Museum in the United Kingdom, bring the Afterlife Exhibition to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium.  The UEG curatorial team selected an outstanding collection of authentic objects excavated in Egypt to illustrate the life, burial customs, and afterlife beliefs of the ancient Egyptians.   These objects transport the visitor to a remote time and place where people loved their lives so much they wanted to continue them for eternity.  People will encounter rare and precious gold tongue and eye pieces that were believed to allow ancient Egyptian mummies to see and speak in the afterlife, animal headed canopic jars that preserved the vital organs, ancient royal burial linen finer than can be made today, and finely painted coffins and masks all meant to transport the ancient Egyptians to a wonderful afterlife.  Exquisite jewelry in carnelian, crystal and amethyst, fine clothing thousands of years old, fragile baskets and jars, elegant cosmetic containers, and detailed artistic scenes of people from all walks of life — together these objects speak to us today of the marvelous life of the ancient Egyptians.

“The Afterlife Exhibition gives visitors to the South Florida Science Center the opportunity to experience first-hand the remains of one of the first great civilizations in world history” said Dr. Carolyn Routledge, chief curator of the Afterlife Exhibition.  “The ancient Egyptian artefacts on display, some over 5,000 years old, come from some of the most spectacular excavations in Egypt during the past 150 years.  We are very excited to be able to share with visitors the experience of being in an ancient Egyptian royal tomb and being in the presence of people who lived thousands of years ago, but had the same needs, feelings and ambitions that we do today.”

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, recently named the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches’ nonprofit of the year, features more than 50 hands-on educational exhibits, an 8,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquarium- featuring both local and exotic marine life, a digital planetarium, conservation research station, Florida exhibit hall and an interactive Everglades exhibit.  All exhibits will be on display during Afterlife’s special showing.

Admission to Afterlife: Tombs & Treasures of Ancient Egypt and the Science Center’s permanent exhibits will be $19.95 for adults, $15.95 for children aged 3 to 12, $17.95 for seniors aged 62 and older, and children under 3 are free.  Admission for Science Center members is $8. Planetarium shows and miniature golf are not included in general admission pricing. Guests will also be able to select a Science Center-only pass, granting access to the Center’s general offerings for a reduced admission price.

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach and is open Monday – Friday from 9am-5pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-6pm.  For more information, call 561-832-1988 or visit www.sfsciencecenter.org.  Like the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium on Facebook and follow them on Twitter @SFScienceCenter.

Enjoyment is the Key to Sticking with Exercise for a Lifetime, New Book Advises

By Editor, HelpingYouCare.com

Stick-With-Exercise-For-A-Lifetime-How-to-Enjoy-Every-Minute-of-It-by-Robert-Hopper-PhD

In his new book, “Stick With Exercise For A Lifetime; How to Enjoy Every Minute of It,” former OccidentalCollege swimming and water polo coach and wellness consultant Robert Hopper, PhD provides a concise guide to developing an exercise program and sticking with it.

Dr. Hopper advises a shift in thinking to help people succeed with exercise.

“The core principle? By choosing an activity you enjoy and feel passionate about, you’ll greatly increase your chances of sticking with exercise and improving your health and well-being,” says Dr. Hopper on his website about the new book.

The book advises “selecting any activity you enjoy or even think you might enjoy—be it tennis, golf, dancing, hiking, cycling, skiing, softball, or bowling.”

Then in eight short chapters, filled with real-life examples from athletes and others, Dr. Hopper presents a simple game plan for how you can “follow a set of best practices to maximize your chances of exercise success.”

Contents

The eight chapters of the book include the following (each with an encapsulating quote selected by the author and found in the Table of Contents):

  • Chapter One | FUN — The solution for your best-laid plans
The more pleasure you get from physical activity, the more likely it is you’ll want to engage in more of it.
  • Chapter Two | COACH –The guide to reaching your milestones
Remember, at one time, Olympic swimmer Dara Torres didn’t know the freestyle.
  • Chapter Three | TEAM–The time and effort optimizer
At the low end of exertion, you may join a croquet, archery, ping-pong, or lawn bowling club.
  • Chapter Four | TIME–The good relationship that begins slowly.
You may start out thrilled with your once-a-week exercise program and decide to do it every day.  Resist that temptation.
  • Chapter Five | SUPPLEMENTARY FITNESS–Physical fitness as a side dish
Instead of health and fitness as your motivation, you’ll try fitness training to get better at your lifetime sport.
  • Chapter Six | CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT–A healthy appetite for exercise
Everyone needs feedback in order to improve–even the greatest performers in the world.
  • Chapter Seven | CHAMPIONSHIP MOMENTS — How exactly does one “Just do it”?
I can promise you that mental toughness is not a God-given trait.
  • Chapter Eight | SUMMARY & QUICK REFERENCE — Ready, set, go–a course of action”
Early success at each stage in the cycle helps ensure your success at subsequent ones.

As summarized on the book’s back cover, it includes:

  • The seven best practices to guarantee exercise success
  • How to make the mental shift from “working out” to “having fun”
  • How the exercise secrets of top athletes can work for you
  • How to discover and empower your own inner athlete
  • How to find plenty of guilt-free time for your favorite sports
  • How to build a winning team that supports your exercise goals
  • The key techniques for overcoming challenges to your exercise plan

“Dr. Hopper shares the secrets of top athletes, including the Four Winning Techniques for overcoming challenges to your personal exercise plan and the Five Core Best Practices to keep you physically active and motivated for the long haul,” according to the book’s publisher.

The book is available for purchase from Amazon.com.

“This book offers an important reminder: As adults, we get to pick what fitness activities appeal to us, and we can use our passion to improve our health. … Reading it just might [be] the small start you need to kick off a lifetime fitness habit. Have fun!” writes Catherine Holecko of Family Fitness, About.com, in a review posted on Amazon.com.

Science Center welcomes canines and companions to next “Science on Tap” on September 11

Dr. Lisa Radosta
Dr. Lisa Radosta

(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.)  Calling all that are curious about canines!  The next topic in the trendy “Science on Tap” series, Decoding Your Dog, is sure to speak (or bark) to those who consider themselves a dog-lover, pet-parent or fur-baby mommy or daddy.  On Thursday, September 11 at 8 p.m. at O’Shea’s Irish Pub, Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorist Dr. Lisa Radosta will deconstruct the assumptions, myths and mysteries surrounding our canine companions. Her “drink up get smart” talk will highlight the science behind a variety of dog traits such as body language, emotions and general intelligence.  All dogs are welcomed to attend.

“People are obsessed with their pets,” said Kate Arrizza, Science Center COO.  “It is only fitting that we would have a ‘Science on Tap’ series dedicated to ‘Decoding Your Dog.’  More than 100 people have attended each of our first three events, and we expect this latest topic in the series to be the busiest of all as O’Shea’s is welcoming science-lovers and their furry-friends!  Bring your dog and ask Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorist Dr. Radosta why your dog wags its tail or why it barks at other animals.  I can assure you that some of the answers will be surprising.”

Modeled after “Science Cafés,” a trend sweeping pubs throughout the country, the Science Center’s “Science on Tap” is the first registered Science Café between Vero Beach and Fort Lauderdale. According to Arrizza, it will be the only place in Palm Beach County where for the price of a cup of coffee, a quality craft beer, or a smooth glass of wine, anyone can come to discuss the latest trends in science and technology with a world-class scientist. With a motto to “drink up – get smart,” you know you are in for a casual-education session, as the goal of the program is for guests to have fun while learning a little bit more about everyday curiosities.

Dr. Radosta has a pedigree of her own with serious science credentials.  After graduating from the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000, Dr. Radosta completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery, working as a primary care veterinarian for more than two years. She then decided to follow her dream to become a Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorist, completing a three-year residency in behavioral medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2006, passing the board examination later that year. A recipient of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists Resident Research Award two years consecutively during residency, Dr. Radosta has since owned her own behaviorial medicine specialty practice, Florida Veterinary Behavior Service, in southeastern Florida since 2007.

“Science on Tap” is a free event, and patrons can enjoy O’Shea’s happy hour specials, which include $1 off well drinks, $3 draft beers, $4 bottle beers and $3 Irish Car Bomb drinks (starting at 7 p.m.).  “Science on Tap” is being co-sponsored by the West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority.

Located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach, the Science Center is open Monday – Friday from 9am-5pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-6pm.
