SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER MARCIA ANDREWS ENDORSES

MICHELLE SANTAMARIA FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER

Today, District 6 School Board Member Marcia Andrews endorsed Michelle Santamaria for the County Commission District 6 seat.

The seat is currently held by Santamaria’s father, County Commissioner Jess Santamaria, who is retiring due to term limits.

“I have known and worked with Commissioner Jess Santamaria for many years on education and other issues important to our community.  I am excited to endorse his daughter, Michelle Santamaria, to be our next County Commissioner.

As someone who was raised in our district, a small business owner, attorney and former assistant state attorney, Michelle Santamaria will not only bring her own unique qualifications and experience to the office, but will follow in her father’s footsteps and continue to be a champion for honest government and against public corruption,” said Andrews.

The boundaries of the School Board District 6 seat are nearly identical to the boundaries of the County Commission District 6 seat.

“I am honored to have Marcia Andrews’ support and endorsement.  Marcia has been an outstanding public servant and has done so much to improve the quality of public education.  I look forward to her guidance and to working with her in the future on education and other issues important to our children,” said Santamaria.

September, 2014 – Housebreaking Your Dog

HOUSEBREAKING YOUR DOG

By Mark Planco of Planco Veterinary Care

Housebreaking depends upon the instinct of dogs to keep their bed clean.  Dogs are “den animals”. You can make use of this instinct by creating a sort of home “den” for them.    Their own private place gives them a sense of security.  Confinement is NOT cruel unless abused.  Do this by obtaining a crate that is big enough for the puppy to turn around in and to lie at full length, but no larger.  Metal cages work best because they are strong and provide the least obstruction to vision. A puppy does not want a mess in his bed and then sleep in it!   However, if the box is so large that he can relieve himself in one end and sleep in the other, he will do so.

Remember that on the very first day it is important to start giving the puppy all his naps in the crate.  Puppies sleep 75% of the time.  When the puppy awakens from his nap, you immediately take him out of the crate and take him/her outside to a spot that you previously have selected. Having a specific routine that is used EVERY time will make your housebreaking time short.  You must take him out before and after play;  always when he awakens from a nap; eats, drinks, and always the first thing in the morning and last thing at night.  You must “never just put him out”.  Instead, you must take him out, following your routine, urge him to go, and PRAISE him when he does.  .

POINTS TO REMEMBER:

1.      A dog can only understand scolding and praise if it occurs within a half second of the event you are trying to control.  Catching a puppy “in the act” is the best time to scold or praise.  After the event has occurred, it is too late to scold, or praise, because the puppy will associate your feedback with whatever he  is doing at the time, not ten minutes before.  Rubbing his nose in his mistakes is a worthless technique and only confuses the dog.

2.      Dogs need to relieve themselves after eating, drinking, sleeping and playing.

3.   Feed your puppy the same time every day.  This will help keep the dogs digestive system regular and it will be easier to predict when he needs to go out.

4.  Start housetraining immediately.

5.  If a mistakes happens, clean it up well and spray an odor neutralizer on the wet spot and rub it in well.

Good luck and please consult our clinic if you are having any difficulties in housebreaking your puppy.  Using these guidelines a puppy of six to eight weeks can be housebroken within a couple of weeks.

Hiring The Law Firm That Is Right For You

By Blanca Greenstein, Esq. & Nadia Hoosien,Esq. with Greenstein & Associates

While it may appear that every attorney and law firm is equipped equally for the same job, there are many factors and dynamics to consider when choosing an attorney and law firm that is right for you. Although you cannot plan for every legal issue or every bump in the road, it is critical that you understand what to consider in choosing the right law firm, and even more importantly, to know what questions to ask in your first consultation. In hiring a law firm you are building a new relationship and placing your trust in their hands. Therefore, it is important for you to become familiar with the law firm’s culture, their practice areas, their knowledge, and expertise. This article will highlight some of the central points to consider when hiring the law firm that is right for you.

1. Beginning Your Initial Research

With the abundance of law firms to choose from, there are several ways to start your initial research. The most effective way to start your search would be by asking your family, friends and neighbors about their personal experiences with law firms. Question both the positive and negative experiences they may have encountered, and whether or not they would recommend the law firm to their loved ones. A second avenue to consider is browsing the Internet and local phonebook, as well as taking into account media or advertising you may have seen. And thirdly, consider law firms that are in your local vicinity that are convenient and accessible to you.

2. Narrowing Down Your Law Firm Choices

A law firm’s website can provide you with important information, such as: the area of law they practice; familiarity and experience the firm has; resources available to the firm; as well as providing you with a first impression. Additionally, take into account whether the law firm has had any reviews or ratings, and always consider resources such the Florida Bar (www.floridabar.org) and the American Bar Association (www.americanbaro.org).

3. The Initial Contact

When you are ready to make the initial contact with a law firm, you generally are able to make contact either through e-mail or by telephone. Consider whether the law firm has both options available to you, and whether they are willing to take the time to speak with you. The initial contact with the law firm can often foretell what your future correspondences with them will be like. Ask yourself: is there a real person on the other end; is the secretary respectful and courteous; and most importantly, do you feel like a priority? Building a relationship with a law firm requires your trust; therefore it is important that at the outset you feel respected and valued.

4. The First Meeting

Now that you have scheduled your first meeting, it is important that you come prepared. Make sure to bring all your documents and any related information with you. Prepare questions ahead of time, and be sure to write down any concerns you may have. Consider what you would like to have accomplished, and the outcome you anticipate. Preparation is essential, as it helps both the law firm and you come to a realistic and acceptable arrangement. Some essential questions would be: Who will be my initial contact; who will I be working with; what are my fees and payment options; what can I expect if the process takes longer than anticipated; and how often the firm will be communicating with you throughout the process.

5. Hiring The Law Firm

It is common that law firms will conclude the meeting with a contract. At this point reflect on how thorough, responsive, and respectful the attorney and firm has treated you. If you follow the above steps, your instinct and impressions should now serve as your final decision maker. Hiring the right law firm can be the most crucial determination when it comes to resolving your legal problems. Do your homework, trust yourself, and remember that you are building a new relationship.

A Message from the Wycliffe Stiffs

Raising Funds for P.I.N.K.

Are you aware that your Wycliffe Stiffs Stickball League, in memory of David Hamburger, past Dir. of Announcers and Scorekeepers, in 2012 helped create the Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, partnership with Wycliffe CC Play for P.I.N.K.?

The support by Wycliffe Stiffs and eventually Wycliffe CC led to the success and a win, win for everyone involved. This program from our impetus and success , helped moved the program to NY and NJ.

You went to dinner at Anthony’s, and they gave 20% of your check to Play for P.I.N.K. ,Wycliffe CC Play for P.I.N.K. Program. So easy, so enjoyable, rewarding and so helpful.  A piece of cake we would say!!!!!!!!!

So it’s real simple- If you go to Anthony’s in Wellington on 441, in the Isla Verde Shopping Center opposite Total Wine – on any or all of the following dates, Anthony’s will make the same donation.  You must tell your server that you are there for the Wycliffe CC Play for P.I.N.K. Program.

Dates: Mondays in October – Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27

If you are up North, in NY or NJ the same applies.

We trust that you will want to enjoy yourself at Anthony’s as we do every time we go there, and will share this with your friends, even if they are not “Geezer Jocks “like you.

Best regards,

Marty Ross, Commish
