Ballet East Partners With Center for Creative Education

to Take 3rd-Grade Students on an Exciting Journey Through the Arts

With an Original and Unexpected Production of Alice in Wonderland, Complete With a Tap Dancing Mad Hatter

West Palm Beach, FL (August 6, 2014) – A group of more than fifty 3rd-graders

Emma Parssi (Wellington) as the tap-dancing Mad Hatter and Sydney Sheldon (WPB) as the Cheshire Cat

watched on Tuesday, eyes wide open and big smiles on their cute faces, as “The Mad Hatter” sneaked around and plopped down on the “Queen’s” throne while she wasn’t looking.  This is not allowed, and certainly frowned upon by Her Majesty! But the crowd loved it.  The fact that the Mad Hatter was also wearing tap shoes and tapping out the lead role in the Ballet East original production of Alice in Wonderland made the show that much more enjoyable for the young audience.  The show returns for a second group of youngsters on Thursday, August 7 from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Center for Creative Education, located at 425 24th St. in West Palm Beach.

The production was part of the Center for Creative Education’s new “Discover Series,” which takes kids on a tour of music, dance, theater, visual arts and media arts. Ten dancers from Ballet East (formerly Susan Lyle Studios) donned amazing costumes and performed excerpts from the ballet Alice in Wonderland, with original choreography by Ballet East Artistic Director Chelsea Nasby.  Bringing a new dimension to the production was a tap-dancing “Mad Hatter,” something one would not expect to see in a ballet. The show was very well received and the cast is looking forward to its return engagement on Thursday.

The JAWS-dropping excitement runs through Friday, August 15, with special shark-inspired crafts, activities and presentations.  On-going activities include: touch tank demos and feedings, shark tooth labs, Science on a Sphere presentations on shark migration, edible ocean and shark hat crafts, shark conservation movies, promise-pact to preserve sharks. The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation will show two films – This is Your Ocean: Sharks and Whale Sharks of the Yucatan, plus they will premiere the trailer from their newest film, Sharks of the World, and discuss the latest in shark research and conservation. Additionally, Professor Clark the Science Shark will be on-site for opening day, August 9, and special guest Hannah Medd, a local marine biologist working to effectively apply scientific research to the shark conservation message, will present and answer questions on Thursday, August 14. Additional vendors include: Rodger Dean Stadium, Jupiter Hammerheads and Shark Angels.

“We love the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week,” noted Science Center CEO Lew Crampton.  “It is a great opportunity to bring awareness to shark preservation efforts, with the Science Center serving as a next step for continued education.  Local guests and out-of-town visitors can come in to learn more about what they saw on TV – and they can learn with interactive demonstrations, such as the touch tank or Science on a Sphere.  With the largest fresh and saltwater aquarium from Miami to Orlando and a full-time aquarium curator, we are perfectly positioned to serve as an on-going community resource and we are thrilled to have the support of the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation this year.”

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, recently named the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches’ nonprofit of the year, features more than 50 hands-on educational exhibits, an 8,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquarium- featuring both local and exotic marine life, a digital planetarium, conservation research station, Florida exhibit hall and an interactive Everglades exhibit.  The aquarium features more than 90 different varieties of fish – including some of Florida’s most beautiful native fish such as Queen Angels, Pink Wrasse, sharks and stingrays, a close cousin of sharks.

Shark Preservation Week is sponsored by the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and activities are included in Science Center admission. General admission to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is $14 for adults, $10.50 for children ages 3 to 12, and $12.50 for seniors over the age of 62. Children under 3 and SFSCA members are free.  Admission also includes access to the Center’s current traveling exhibit Mazes.  Winding its way over 9,000 square-feet, Mazes leads guests on an adventure through a series of interactive brain-teasers, 3-D puzzles and full body games.

Located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach, the Science Center is open Monday – Friday from 9am-5pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-6pm.  For more information, please call (561) 832-1988 or visit www.sfsciencecenter.org. September, 2014 – The Art of Going Green

0
Cultural Council of Palm Beach County
Highlights the Art of Going Green
Exhibition August 29-October 18

(Lake Worth/July 31, 2014):  There is much more to going green than putting water bottles or newspapers in a recycling bin. There is also great potential for creating beauty with the things we have discarded. That is one reason the Cultural Council has reached out to artists all over Palm Beach County to create with re-used objects in its two part exhibition “Re-purposed/Re-seen,” August 29 to October 18.

Artists in the exhibition are using traditional techniques such as collage, painting and assemblage with out-of-the-ordinary materials such as used pallets, coat hangers and clock parts. “We want to turn the idea of recycling on its head, and dispel any pre-conceived ideas of what it means to re-purpose objects into art.” says Cultural Council Manager of Artist Services, Nichole M. Hickey.

“In continuing with the Cultural Council’s ongoing efforts to promote local artists, we chose participants who regularly re-purpose in their art,” says Cultural Council President and CEO, Rena Blades. “Art can and should be accessible to everyone, which is why we hope exhibitions like ‘Re-purposed/Re-seen’ will attract not only the people who are already familiar with the kind of work the Council shows, but also those who have not previously been exposed to the diverse art and artists in Palm Beach County.”

Artists included in this exhibition are Dennis Aufiery, Inna Babaeva, Steve Blackwood, Nicole Galluccio, Bertrand Jubert, Sandra Kuba, Deborah Meisel and Rose Shaw.

The exhibition also has an unusual second component – a collaboration between the Cultural Council and the non-profit organization Resource Depot, which supports local educators and their students through creatively re-using materials. The Council is showing the top works produced and juried after a community-wide call to create art with discarded VHS cassette tapes available at Resource Depot.

Admission to the exhibition preview party on Thursday, August 28 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. is free to Cultural Council members, $10 for non-members and includes admission to the artist trunk show featuring Urban Junk and Marta Cruz. To RSVP, call 561-472-3341 or email Debbie Calabria at dcalabria@palmbeachculture.com. The “Re-purposed/Re-seen” exhibition is free and open to the public from Friday, August 29 through Saturday, October 18.

Note to Editors:  Interviews with featured artists, as well as photo opportunities may be arranged in advance of, or during, the exhibition. High resolution images of the “Re-purposed/Re-seen” artists and their creations are available for downloading at Re-purposed/Re-seen Exhibition.

Awake
David Plumb
By David Plumb

Your mind drifts to her breathing
that feels much like yours.
Something caught right off.
Not a soiree, a fantasy, a blank wish.
Silence and you remember
the first dance at the Pink Hotel.
What light in each step and swirl.
Now beyond the mystery of folly, messes
good and bad memories fade at 3:07 A.M.
A tiny light no one but you can see appears
and someone says this is it
and for a second you don’t know
it’s you talking to yourself.
It says she is the prize, the whole damn thing
beyond wars, endless slaughters, souls gone awry
crooked politicians, dropping APRs, failed dreams
impossible circumstances and just plain wisdom
and you lie there, hand on her shoulder
listening to the awe holding
the two of you so still.

AW Spotlight

The Zoo Health Club, Bringing Positive Changes to Your Workout

By Krista Martinelli

Jonathan and Bonnie, new owners of the Zoo Health Club, located at Jog and Lantana Road in Lake Worth.
Jonathan and Bonnie, new owners of the Zoo Health Club, located at Jog and Lantana Road in Lake Worth.

Under new ownership, the Zoo Health Club – Lake Worth West – is making positive changes in people’s lives. New owners Bonnie and Jonathan are happy with their medium sized facility, saying “We’re the Goldilocks of health clubs, not too big and not too small.”

All of their staff is certified to teach the fitness classes. They also offer boot camp trainers and personal trainers. One of their personal trainers specializes in working with sports-specific training. As for classes, they offer Zumba®, Tai Chi, Pilates, self-defense for seniors, yoga, Bokwa® (African dancing) and many other classes, ranging from beginning to advanced.

Most of their equipment is new and in great shape.  The few pieces that need updated are being changed out.

Bonnie brings many special talents to the Zoo, and so does Jonathan. Bonnie is trained in special Ed, and science. Because of necessity (with her own sons), Bonnie learned to teach with a kinetic component – studying mixed with exercising. The Zoo is proud to be the only gym to offer something brand new – Learning in Motion. It’s a program that helps students, K – 12th grade, and as Bonnie explains, “We’re the only ones doing it.” Call the Zoo for more information about this. (561) 891-6571.

“We take a personal interest in our clients. We always greet them and say goodbye to them.  We know what their personal workout goals are and we care about them,” says Bonnie. “That’s what makes the Zoo Health Club unique.”

IMG_2169-sign
“Thank you to every person who said I can’t. You are the reason I will!”

She also explains that people need to know a few things about losing weight. Even though it’s simple, many people aren’t realizing that you need to burn more calories than you are taking in. “Working out with a buddy is really the best way to stay on top of your goals.” They recommend doing weights at least 3 times a week and doing cardio workouts at least 5 times a week. “Another thing people don’t realize is that resting your muscles is just as important as working out,” says Bonnie.  And after you work out with weights, it’s good to have a little protein – like a protein bar, protein shake, handful of nuts, etc.

At the Zoo, they sell protein bars and they are also distributors for Juice Plus, a popular multi-vitamin system.

“People have different goals. Some want to build muscle, some want to define muscle or increase power. It’s very individual.  You meet your goals so much faster when you use a personal trainer.”  Bonnie explains the many benefits of muscle building, including improving balance, better bone density, improving memory, lowering blood pressure, and more.

There are about twenty Zoo Health Clubs nationwide and the number is growing steadily. There are Zoo Health Clubs in Lake Worth West (at Lantana and Jog), Lake Worth East and Royal Palm Beach.

IMG_2170equipment2

Personal fitness and health touches upon a very powerful note, especially for Jonathan, who recovered from a heart attach one year ago. Meanwhile Bonnie says she’s always been an athlete and a teacher.

There are showers and lockers available and cleaning is always happening at the Zoo. “In between everything we do, we are constantly cleaning,” says Bonnie.  They wipe down each piece of equipment three times a day. “This is the cleanest I’ve ever seen this gym,” says one happy client as she works out.

Bonnie and Jonathan also have an “eye for autism” and want to work on programs that help autistic children. They are also working out an arrangement with A.R.C.

The two things that people tend to skimp on when they are trying to get healthy, according to Bonnie, are water and good fats. It’s very important to drink lots of water before, during and after your workout. Meanwhile, it’s important to have good fats for your body – including nuts, olive oil, avocado and fish oils.

Bonnie has 3 boys and one girl in her family.  Since three of the kids are athletes, including gymnastics, cheerleading and basketball, she is very familiar with sports and the needs of young athletes.

Another difference with The Zoo is “that we are really going out of our way to be senior-friendly. We want them to know this is a safe place for them to come, ask questions and work out.” Insurance pays for seniors who work out in their “Silver Sneakers” program.

Best of all, the Zoo Health Club is an affordable gym with rates ranging from $19 per month to $29 per month, depending on the package. They also offer discounts for military, seniors, students, police officers and fire fighters.

“We invite you to come back, see what the Zoo Health Club is like under new ownership and enjoy a whole new gym experience,” says Bonnie. Mention this story, the “AW Spotlight” story, and get a 3-day pass to try out the Zoo.  Your body will thank you for it!
