World’s Largest Volunteer Beach Cleanup Comes to
Palm Beach County
Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful joins hundreds of thousands of people around world for the 29th annual International Coastal Cleanup
The Ocean Conservancy announced the date for the 29th annual International Coastal Cleanup, a global event that mobilizes hundreds of thousands of people to take action for our ocean, for September 20.  By joining the movement for Trash Free Seas, volunteers will help clean up trash already in the ocean and work to reduce their own trash impact before it happens.
Ocean trash compromises the health of humans, wildlife, and the economies that depend on a healthy ocean. Every piece of trash volunteers find will be tracked and included in an annual index of global marine debris to be released in 2015.
Last year, nearly 650,000 people picked up more than 12 million pounds of trash along 13,000 miles of coastline. Local non-profit, Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc., an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, coordinates the Cleanup in Palm Beach County. Last year, during the International Coastal Cleanup 2013, in Palm Beach County alone, over 3,200 volunteers picked up more than 17,000 lbs of trash from Palm Beach County beaches, lakes, and participating neighborhoods. This year in Palm Beach County, local volunteers will gather at multiple locations on September 20 with additional cleanup dates before and after the official worldwide event. Most cleanup events begin at 8:00 a.m. with some later start times. For a list of sites, dates, and times, please visit www.keepPBCbeautiful.org  or call (561) 686-6646.   Community Service Hours will be given. Volunteers should pre-register by contacting the volunteer coordinators listed for each site. Volunteers are encouraged to wear hats, sunscreen, sturdy shoes and bring water and they should verify what supplies will be provided at their chosen Site with the Volunteer Coordinator. Free International Coastal Cleanup t-shirts will be given to volunteers while supplies last.

7th Annual Jeff Annas Memorial Firefighters 5k Run/Walk Returns to Wellington

The 7th Annual Jeff Annas Memorial Firefighters 5k Run/Walk will return to Wellington on Saturday, September 13th at 7:30a.m.  The race begins and ends at the Wellington Amphitheater and travels down and back along Southshore Blvd.  Registration closes Friday, September 12th or when the race has reached a maximum capacity of 1,400 entries.  The cost for participation in the race is $35 and registration is available on the www.active.com website.  The race proceeds will go to Waterfront Warriors, Little Smiles of Florida and the Jeff Annas Memorial Scholarship Fund.  Trophies will be awarded to the top 3 in each age group.  Everyone participating will get a finisher medal.

There will also be a Kids Run which will be approximately ½ mile and will begin at 8:00a.m.  Registration is FREE for the kid’s race and it will not be timed, but every finisher will receive a medal.  For more information on the history of the race, please visit the www.jeffannas5k.com website.

Country Club Drive and Chancellor Drive will be closed to vehicle traffic while participants are on the roadway.  During the race, motorists on Southshore Boulevard will be detoured at Greenview Shores to Wellington Trace and Big Blue.  All roadways are expected to be cleared by 12:00p.m.

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to announce they will be honoring the USPA National Youth Tournament Series Champions at their September 24th ” State of the Village” Luncheon.  The most celebrated USPA polo players under the age of 19 competed in the NYTS Championship. A total of 260 players competed in 27 tournaments to achieve NYTS All-Star status, and from that group only 16 individuals out of 122 were invited to compete for the national championship.  The winning team ( Zone 3) is comprised of Wellington’s Juan Bollini, Wes Finlayson, Grant Ganzi and Christian Weisz.  Coach Tom Goodspeed led this incredible team to a second year consecutive win.

Mayor Robert Margolis will be the key note speaker at this event. The Chamber’s Annual “State of the Village” luncheon is one of the most anticipated luncheons of the year.

2014 – 2015 Kravis Center “ArtSmart” Line-Up Highlights Woody, Grace and More!

(West Palm Beach, Fla.)  Judy Mitchell, CEO for the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, announced Lee Wolf and Steven Caras will serve again as co-chairs for the Center’s popular 2014 – 2015 ArtSmart Lunch & Learn series.  The series of three continuing arts education events includes lively lectures presented during lunch prepared by Catering by The Breakers at the Kravis Center. Tickets are $75 for each event and go on sale to the public starting September 27.  Tickets are currently on sale to Kravis Center donors.  Lunch & Learn lectures are held in the Kravis Center’s Cohen Pavilion.

Award-winning business leader, actress and lecturer, Lee Wolf also serves as a member of the Kravis Center Board of Directors. A 14-year dancer with the New York City Ballet, Steven Caras maintains an active schedule as a published author, featured lecturer, photographer, dance critic, guest ballet master and fundraiser. After 19 years of Lee Wolf chairing the series, Steven Caras joined her in 2012 to form this dynamic duo as co-chairs for the Lunch & Learn series for ArtSmart at the Kravis Center.

Safari Nights: “Are You Ready for Some Football?” theme: September 5, 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. – Ready? Set? Hike! Guests are invited to the Zoo on Friday evenings during September for the Safari Nights series. A theme of “Are You Ready for Some Football?” will score a touchdown with children on September 5. Guests who wear their favorite team’s jersey or t-shirt will be entered to win a Zoo prize pack valued at $150, to be drawn at the end of the Safari Night series in October. Chuck E Cheese will make a special appearance for fun photo ops, along with members of the Zoo Crew.

Food Truck Safari: September 6, 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. — Feed your inner animal at some of South Florida’s best food trucks inside the Zoo, when the “Food Truck Safari” returns on September 6. Enjoy live music from Steven Vincent and Juan Nealon, along with exciting Zoo Keeper talks and up-close animal encounters. The following food trucks will be spread throughout Zoo grounds: DR Smokehouse,

Monster Burgers, Don Mofongo, Parabas Grill, The Taco Factory and Ice Cream Express.

Admission, which does not include food and beverage purchases, is $9 for adult members, $10 for adult non-members, $6 for child members, $7 for child non-members and free for toddlers under age three. All food trucks are donating a portion of their proceeds toward Zoo operations. Trucks accept cash or credit. Gate proceeds support regular Zoo operations.

The Zoo encourages all food trucks to apply sustainable practices in their daily operations, and will once again give a “Sustainability Award” to the truck that excels in the most environmental and conservation sustainability categories in food production and presentation.

While approximately half of the Zoo grounds will be closed off during the construction process, guests can visit the Zoo for 50% off regular, full-priced admission pricing from September 8 through September 12. No coupons, discounts or other promotions will be accepted during the week. Half-off admission discount includes the Safari Nights event on Friday evening.

Conservation Leadership Lecture: “Common Ground: Agriculture and Conservation in Florida’s Heartland,” featuring Mallory Lykes Dimmitt: September 18, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. – The Zoo’s fourth Conservation Leadership Lecture of 2014, generously sponsored by Florida Crystals Corporation, is titled “Common Ground: Agriculture and Conservation in Florida’s Heartland,” featuring Mallory Lykes Dimmitt. Dimmitt coordinates the Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition project team and serves as the Executive Director.

The Conservation Leadership Lecture will occur on September 18, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Zoo’s Tropics Café. Guests are invited to enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and Zoo animal encounters from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. before the lecture presentation. “Fiesta Cultural,” celebrating Hispanic heritage: September 20, all day, including Story Time at the Zoo, 10:30 a.m., and Roar & Pour, 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. – The Zoo presents its first-ever “Fiesta Cultural,” celebrating Hispanic heritage on September 20 all day long, including a morning Story Time at the Zoo and an evening Roar & Pour event. The Fiesta Cultural will celebrate Hispanic and Latin American heritage and culture, placing a special focus on the Zoo’s animals whose species originate from South and Central America.

The Fiesta Cultural is in partnership with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Palm Beach County. The multi-cultural, family-friendly event will highlight the colorful culture, diverse music with a Latin DJ and two live bands, and the delicious food from the Hispanic and Latin American heritages. Regular Zoo admission prices apply.

The event includes a bilingual Story Time at the Zoo book reading at 10:30 a.m. in the Zoo’s Conservation Station. Story Time at the Zoo will feature the book “’Slowly, Slowly, Slowly,’ said the Sloth,” by Eric Carle, read in both Spanish and English. Children will be brought to the sloth habitat after the book is read.

The Fiesta Cultural also includes a Roar & Pour event, featuring live Latin and reggae-infused music by Moska Project. Take a Child Outside Week: September 24 through September 30 — Take a Child Outside Week is a program designed to help break down obstacles that keep children from discovering the natural world. By arming parents, teachers and other caregivers with resources on outdoor activities, our goal is to help children across the country develop a better understanding and appreciation of the environment in which they live, and a burgeoning enthusiasm for its exploration. Going outside connects children to the natural world, helps kids focus in school, and reduces chances of obesity. So take a child outside, and head on over to the Zoo!

Bargain Hunters — Get Ready for the Gigantic Garage Sale
West Palm Beach, Fla. — The garage sale of all garage sales will take place one day only on Sat., Sept. 20. That’s when the 24th annual Gigantic Garage Sale & Green Market will unfold at the South Florida Fairgrounds Expo Center. Those who want to take advantage of the best selection can shop from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. for a $5 admission fee. Starting at 8 a.m., admission drops to $3. The event will continue through 2 p.m. Parking is free. Enter through gate 8.
More than 3,000 people are expected to attend as they browse for treasures offered by more than 100 organizations and individuals. Booth space is still available. The registration fee for nonprofit organizations is $45 for one 10 by 20 foot space and $90 for one 20 by 20 foot space. The fees for for-profit and individuals range from $80 to $235, depending on the space and location.
Shoppers also can take advantage of buying fruits and vegetables from a number of green market vendors who also will be on hand during the sale.
“Local nonprofit organizations and families will offer everything from bargains to fantastic finds, all in spacious and air conditioned comfort,” said Expo Events Coordinator Kayla Hodges.

          YWCA Chosen for The Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse Challenge

The YWCA of Palm Beach County has been selected for the third consecutive year to participate in Allstate’s annual Purple Purse Challenge. To give back, ThePurple Purse Allstate Foundation is donating $500,000 to ignite public awareness and fundraising for charities benefiting domestic violence survivors. The YWCA Palm Beach County, which operates the Mary Rubloff YWCA Harmony House, a shelter for battered women and abused children, was one of 142 domestic violence programs throughout the United States and the only one in south Florida selected for the challenge. The ten charities raising the most money will receive $10,000-$100,000 from Allstate. The Challenge begins at noon on September 2 and ends October 3, 2014, the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

“We are dependent upon the community, especially those people who are social media savvy, to donate to the challenge and aid us in earning some of the Allstate funds,” stated Suzanne Turner, YWCA CEO. South Florida Science Center and Aquarium hosts North American premier of Afterlife: Tombs & Treasures of Ancient Egypt

(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.)  –  A one-way ticket to Egypt will cost less than $20 this fall, thanks to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, as the local attraction is taking visitors on a journey thousands of years in the making.  Stepping into the Science Center on Saturday, October 11, 2014, opening day of Afterlife: Tombs & Treasures of Ancient Egypt, guests will feel like they have stepped into a time machine, warping them to an elaborate ancient empire.

In true Science Center-style, the highly anticipated blockbuster exhibition will have interactive components, making it feel like this transporting has really occurred.  Most notably, guests can step into the centerpiece of the exhibition, a full- size reconstruction of the burial chamber of the great Pharaoh Thutmose III.

On tour for more than 10 years, and seen by more than 4.5 million people worldwide, Afterlife will be coming from a wildly-popular tour in Asia, where science-seekers lined up for more than 6 hours for a glimpse at the largest current touring exhibition of authentic Egyptian material. Winning the International Award at the UK Museum and Heritage Awards ceremony in 2012, visitors will be mystified by 200 exquisite and original artifacts, all of which are on display in North America for the first time ever.  The exhibit will run through Saturday, April 18, 2015.

“The afterlife is thrilling,” said Lew Crampton, Science Center CEO.  “Every culture has particular beliefs and customs about what happens when we die, with the Egyptians known for some of the most interesting and elaborate traditions.  Preparations for the Pharaohs’ tombs were incredibly intricate and embodied their deeply-rooted beliefs in life beyond the physical world. Excavated directly from the Egyptian tombs and towns, including the Valley of the Kings at Luxor, this is the largest touring exhibition of Egyptian material currently available – and it will be making its North American debut, right here at the South Florida Science Center!  This scientific, environmental and cultural look at the lives of ancient Egyptians is sure to create awe-inspiring moments, and lead to meaningful and interesting science education for all ages. Among the most significant artifacts making its debut, is the Ramesside male mummy believed to be the son of Ramses II, often referred to as “Ramses the Great.” The identity of this 3000-year-old mummy was most recently revealed through an advance Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan carried out during an episode of “Mummy Forensics” on The History Channel. Additionally, there are several other mummies in the exhibition, including a wrapped mummy of a woman and a mummy of a young girl believed to be about 4 – 8 years old.

Visitors to the exhibition begin their voyage to the Afterlife by discovering how sophisticated and rich ancient Egyptians’ lives were through displays related to life in ancient Egypt featuring many rare objects which illustrate their culture as well as their mastery of beautiful design.  They are introduced to the mysterious preparations the Egyptians made for death and burial which they believed would allow them to live forever.  Visitors encounter ancient animal mummies, an extraordinary number of human mummies, exquisite golden mummy masks and coffins, and strange magical figures from ancient tombs.  The exhibition culminates in making the journey to the Valley of the Kings by entering an exact facsimile of the tomb chamber of Thutmose III and discovering the Ramesside male mummy – one of the best preserved mummies in existence.

Widely considered the ‘Napoleon’ of Egypt, and a military genius by historians, Thutmose III was an active expansionist ruler.  Reigning over Egypt for more than 50 years, he has been credited with conquering more land than any pharaoh before or after him, expanding Egypt’s borders to create the largest empire ever conquered and ruled by one king.

“We know that a passion for science is at the heart of any health care career so, as a health care foundation, we’re excited that the South Florida Science Center is growing and developing as a center for science education in the region,” said Quantum Foundation President Eric Kelly.  “Big exhibits like this help draw new people in to explore the world of science and this exhibit will encourage those who haven’t experienced the Science Center to come and see how just how exciting it is.”

United Exhibits Group of Copenhagen, in cooperation with Bolton Museum in the United Kingdom, bring the Afterlife Exhibition to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium.  The UEG curatorial team selected an outstanding collection of authentic objects excavated in Egypt to illustrate the life, burial customs, and afterlife beliefs of the ancient Egyptians.   These objects transport the visitor to a remote time and place where people loved their lives so much they wanted to continue them for eternity.  People will encounter rare and precious gold tongue and eye pieces that were believed to allow ancient Egyptian mummies to see and speak in the afterlife, animal headed canopic jars that preserved the vital organs, ancient royal burial linen finer than can be made today, and finely painted coffins and masks all meant to transport the ancient Egyptians to a wonderful afterlife.  Exquisite jewelry in carnelian, crystal and amethyst, fine clothing thousands of years old, fragile baskets and jars, elegant cosmetic containers, and detailed artistic scenes of people from all walks of life — together these objects speak to us today of the marvelous life of the ancient Egyptians.

“The Afterlife Exhibition gives visitors to the South Florida Science Center the opportunity to experience first-hand the remains of one of the first great civilizations in world history” said Dr. Carolyn Routledge, chief curator of the Afterlife Exhibition.  “The ancient Egyptian artefacts on display, some over 5,000 years old, come from some of the most spectacular excavations in Egypt during the past 150 years.  We are very excited to be able to share with visitors the experience of being in an ancient Egyptian royal tomb and being in the presence of people who lived thousands of years ago, but had the same needs, feelings and ambitions that we do today.”

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, recently named the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches’ nonprofit of the year, features more than 50 hands-on educational exhibits, an 8,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquarium- featuring both local and exotic marine life, a digital planetarium, conservation research station, Florida exhibit hall and an interactive Everglades exhibit.  All exhibits will be on display during Afterlife’s special showing.

Admission to Afterlife: Tombs & Treasures of Ancient Egypt and the Science Center’s permanent exhibits will be $19.95 for adults, $15.95 for children aged 3 to 12, $17.95 for seniors aged 62 and older, and children under 3 are free.  Admission for Science Center members is $8. Planetarium shows and miniature golf are not included in general admission pricing. Guests will also be able to select a Science Center-only pass, granting access to the Center’s general offerings for a reduced admission price.
