Enjoyment is the Key to Sticking with Exercise for a Lifetime, New Book Advises

By Editor, HelpingYouCare.com

Stick-With-Exercise-For-A-Lifetime-How-to-Enjoy-Every-Minute-of-It-by-Robert-Hopper-PhD

In his new book, “Stick With Exercise For A Lifetime; How to Enjoy Every Minute of It,” former OccidentalCollege swimming and water polo coach and wellness consultant Robert Hopper, PhD provides a concise guide to developing an exercise program and sticking with it.

Dr. Hopper advises a shift in thinking to help people succeed with exercise.

“The core principle? By choosing an activity you enjoy and feel passionate about, you’ll greatly increase your chances of sticking with exercise and improving your health and well-being,” says Dr. Hopper on his website about the new book.

The book advises “selecting any activity you enjoy or even think you might enjoy—be it tennis, golf, dancing, hiking, cycling, skiing, softball, or bowling.”

Then in eight short chapters, filled with real-life examples from athletes and others, Dr. Hopper presents a simple game plan for how you can “follow a set of best practices to maximize your chances of exercise success.”

Contents

The eight chapters of the book include the following (each with an encapsulating quote selected by the author and found in the Table of Contents):

  • Chapter One | FUN — The solution for your best-laid plans
The more pleasure you get from physical activity, the more likely it is you’ll want to engage in more of it.
  • Chapter Two | COACH –The guide to reaching your milestones
Remember, at one time, Olympic swimmer Dara Torres didn’t know the freestyle.
  • Chapter Three | TEAM–The time and effort optimizer
At the low end of exertion, you may join a croquet, archery, ping-pong, or lawn bowling club.
  • Chapter Four | TIME–The good relationship that begins slowly.
You may start out thrilled with your once-a-week exercise program and decide to do it every day.  Resist that temptation.
  • Chapter Five | SUPPLEMENTARY FITNESS–Physical fitness as a side dish
Instead of health and fitness as your motivation, you’ll try fitness training to get better at your lifetime sport.
  • Chapter Six | CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT–A healthy appetite for exercise
Everyone needs feedback in order to improve–even the greatest performers in the world.
  • Chapter Seven | CHAMPIONSHIP MOMENTS — How exactly does one “Just do it”?
I can promise you that mental toughness is not a God-given trait.
  • Chapter Eight | SUMMARY & QUICK REFERENCE — Ready, set, go–a course of action”
Early success at each stage in the cycle helps ensure your success at subsequent ones.

As summarized on the book’s back cover, it includes:

  • The seven best practices to guarantee exercise success
  • How to make the mental shift from “working out” to “having fun”
  • How the exercise secrets of top athletes can work for you
  • How to discover and empower your own inner athlete
  • How to find plenty of guilt-free time for your favorite sports
  • How to build a winning team that supports your exercise goals
  • The key techniques for overcoming challenges to your exercise plan

“Dr. Hopper shares the secrets of top athletes, including the Four Winning Techniques for overcoming challenges to your personal exercise plan and the Five Core Best Practices to keep you physically active and motivated for the long haul,” according to the book’s publisher.

The book is available for purchase from Amazon.com.

“This book offers an important reminder: As adults, we get to pick what fitness activities appeal to us, and we can use our passion to improve our health. … Reading it just might [be] the small start you need to kick off a lifetime fitness habit. Have fun!” writes Catherine Holecko of Family Fitness, About.com, in a review posted on Amazon.com.

Science Center welcomes canines and companions to next “Science on Tap” on September 11

Dr. Lisa Radosta
Dr. Lisa Radosta

(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.)  Calling all that are curious about canines!  The next topic in the trendy “Science on Tap” series, Decoding Your Dog, is sure to speak (or bark) to those who consider themselves a dog-lover, pet-parent or fur-baby mommy or daddy.  On Thursday, September 11 at 8 p.m. at O’Shea’s Irish Pub, Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorist Dr. Lisa Radosta will deconstruct the assumptions, myths and mysteries surrounding our canine companions. Her “drink up get smart” talk will highlight the science behind a variety of dog traits such as body language, emotions and general intelligence.  All dogs are welcomed to attend.

“People are obsessed with their pets,” said Kate Arrizza, Science Center COO.  “It is only fitting that we would have a ‘Science on Tap’ series dedicated to ‘Decoding Your Dog.’  More than 100 people have attended each of our first three events, and we expect this latest topic in the series to be the busiest of all as O’Shea’s is welcoming science-lovers and their furry-friends!  Bring your dog and ask Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorist Dr. Radosta why your dog wags its tail or why it barks at other animals.  I can assure you that some of the answers will be surprising.”

Modeled after “Science Cafés,” a trend sweeping pubs throughout the country, the Science Center’s “Science on Tap” is the first registered Science Café between Vero Beach and Fort Lauderdale. According to Arrizza, it will be the only place in Palm Beach County where for the price of a cup of coffee, a quality craft beer, or a smooth glass of wine, anyone can come to discuss the latest trends in science and technology with a world-class scientist. With a motto to “drink up – get smart,” you know you are in for a casual-education session, as the goal of the program is for guests to have fun while learning a little bit more about everyday curiosities.

Dr. Radosta has a pedigree of her own with serious science credentials.  After graduating from the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000, Dr. Radosta completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery, working as a primary care veterinarian for more than two years. She then decided to follow her dream to become a Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorist, completing a three-year residency in behavioral medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2006, passing the board examination later that year. A recipient of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists Resident Research Award two years consecutively during residency, Dr. Radosta has since owned her own behaviorial medicine specialty practice, Florida Veterinary Behavior Service, in southeastern Florida since 2007.

“Science on Tap” is a free event, and patrons can enjoy O’Shea’s happy hour specials, which include $1 off well drinks, $3 draft beers, $4 bottle beers and $3 Irish Car Bomb drinks (starting at 7 p.m.).  “Science on Tap” is being co-sponsored by the West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority.

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, recently named the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches’ nonprofit of the year, features more than 50 hands-on educational exhibits, an 8,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquarium- featuring both local and exotic marine life, a digital planetarium, conservation research station, Florida exhibit hall and an interactive Everglades exhibit.  Located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach, the Science Center is open Monday – Friday from 9am-5pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-6pm.

For more information on the “Science on Tap” series, call 561-832-1988 or visit www.sfsciencecenter.org.  Like the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium on Facebook and follow them on Twitter @SFScienceCenter.

Founder/Director Mauricio Cañete Will Present 40+ Dancers

(West Palm Beach, FL – September 3, 2014) Mauricio Cañete, Founder and director of MC Dance Productions, today announced that the annual FLORIDA YOUTH DANCE GALA will be held at the Duncan Theatre, located on the Lake Worth campus of Palm Beach State College, on Saturday, February 7, at 7:30 p.m. The upcoming Gala is being sponsored by Só Dança USA, a leading provider of quality dance supplies.

Following last year’s sold out success, the second FLORIDA YOUTH DANCE GALA will feature 40 extraordinarily talented dancers from leading dance academies in Miami, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, Hallandale Beach, Pembroke Pines, Pompano Beach, Port St. Lucie, Sarasota and Tampa.
Dedicated to “celebrating and gathering talented dancers” from all over the state, the FLORIDA YOUTH DANCE GALA will “showcase new choreography, finalists from major dance competitions and some electrifying young dancers, resulting in one of the most memorable dance event of the coming season,” says Cañete, a former dancer with Houston Ballet, Ballet Florida and Ballet Eloelle, who is performing in Japan this fall and has previously wowed audiences in England, Russia, Hong Kong, Canada, Austria, Germany, China and throughout the Far East.
“My goal is to give the next generation of dancers the opportunity to perform in a professional environment. In fact, the 40 participating dancers were selected after intense consultations with directors, teachers and co-dancers statewide,” he adds.
“The selection for this year Gala was very difficult because we had over 20 plus schools who contacted me right after the last performance, they realize what a great opportunity this is to showcase their talented dancers. In addition, I’ve been attending ballet competitions around the state, where I recruited three beautiful young ballerinas: Amanda Hall of Miami, Caitlin Field of Hallandale Beach and Tampa’s Maggie Chadbourne, finalists in the American Dance Competition in Orlando who will be performing in our FLORIDA YOUTH DANCE GALA 2015.”
