July, 2014 – Apply for a $750,000 Grant

0

CALLING ALL SMALL PALM BEACH COUNTY NONPROFITS:

Apply today for a Quantum in the Community grant and share in $750,000!

Applications are open for small, grassroots nonprofits in Palm Beach County to receive their share of $750,000. For the past 4 years, West-Palm Beach-based health funder, Quantum Foundation has set aside nearly $3 million to help local nonprofits who are working towards a healthier Palm BeachCounty by meeting the basic needs of residents like food, clothing, shelter and transport.

Quantum Foundation’s President Eric M. Kelly said: “While the foundation has always worked to ensure a robust health workforce for the county and funded the county’s community health center system, we clearly acknowledge that without meeting people’s basic needs, it’s impossible for them to be healthy.”

All applications are carefully considered by a committee made up of Quantum Foundation Program Officer Shannon Hawkins and board members Ethel Isaacs-Williams, Donna Mulholland and Denis Coleman, Jr.

While the application process for Quantum in the Community grants is streamlined, there are strict criteria for nonprofits who apply:

  • You must be registered as a 501[C]3.
  • You must have been working in Palm beachCounty for at least 6 months.
  • Your annual operating budget may not exceed $500,000.
  • You must provide basic needs like food, clothing, shelter and transport to the county’s most vulnerable residents.

No one organization will receive more than $25,000 of the $750,000 total.

To learn more, visit the website www.quantumfnd.org/quantum-in-the-community

All applications must be submitted online by the July 31st deadline.

July, 2014 – Junk Food Modifies DNA

Bet You Didn’t Know Junk Food Modifies DNA

By Jon Lipshaw of SharpShooter MarketingJonLipshaw

We all know junk food is bad for us, but maybe we are underestimating how bad. There’s new research now that shows that junk food can actually affect human DNA scaffolding and gut microbiome which in turn effects the immune system. That immune system modification is then passed down to offspring.

dna-9a-1

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Maryland has found strong evidence that shows that flavor preferences such as having a sweet tooth could very well be something that is passed down to offspring as well. This may play a key role in an individual’s predisposition to obesity, diabetes and a slew of other diseases. So if you were to have two kids, one when you had a bad diet and one when your diet was healthy, the child you had when you were eating healthy would have significantly higher chances of living a healthy life as opposed to the child you had when your diet was poor.

Unknown

When an individual eats food that has too much salt, sugar, fat or unhealthy additives it effects the gut microbiome; a bacteria needed in our body to function properly and efficiently. Imbalances in microbiome basically cause mutations which is why it’s important to stick to unprocessed and organic foods. According to NutritionNJ.com, “in the gut (and on the skin), there is an optimal, albeit not yet fully elucidated, balance of bacterial species. Some strains of bacteria are needed to digest dietary fibers while others produce valuable nutrients like vitamin K.”

View the chart below to see how the human body utilizes microbiomes to function properly.

This is just the tip of the iceberg in this research; there should be much more coming to light in the near future. So next time you’re thinking of grabbing that candy… think again.

July, 2014 – Still I Rise

Still I Rise

By Maya Angelou

Listenhttp://youtu.be/MAYm1uJeSxQ?list=RDMAYm1uJeSxQ

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
