No More Mister Nice Guy, Part II

By Wendell Abern

Dear Readers,

I am using this headline for the second time in three years, because – for the second time in three years – I have been accused of mellowing.  This time, it was my old friend, Lou the Curmudgeon, who called me after reading my last two columns.

“What’s going on?” he asked.  “First, a syrupy tribute to your friend, Jon, then a column with a bunch of commercials.  You’re turning into a nice guy!”

That, from an old friend yet.  Well, no one calls me a nice guy and gets away with it.  So I’m devoting this month’s column to bad-mouthing and denigrating three very deserving candidates.

1 – My local post office.

I belong to a condo association.  We have cluster mailboxes.

Every week, I leave letters for my postman to mail, and at least once a week he fails to pick them up.

I had had enough and called my local post office (Tamarac).  Busy signal.  I called an hour later.  Busy signal.  I called two minutes later.  Busy signal.  I called five hours later.  Busy signal.

I finally drove to the office and asked to talk to the manager.

After eight minutes, she walked out from the back of the building.

“I’d like to offer a reward to one of your employees,” I said.

“Excuse me?”

“I’m going to dial your number, and if anyone answers the phone, I will give him or her ten dollars on the spot.”

“Sir, we’re very busy.  What is it you want?”

“Could you please tell me why my mailman does not pick up my letters when I leave them in my box to be mailed?”

“Just a minute.”

She disappeared in back.  A linebacker the size of my refrigerator walked out to answer me.

“Yeah, whassa problem?” he asked.

“Could you please tell me why you don’t pick up letters from my box when I leave them to be mailed?”

“I open dat cluster o’ boxes from da back.  You open from da front.  You gotta shove your letters to da back.”

“Oh.  So it’s my fault you don’t pick up my letters.”

“Just shove ‘em to da back, dat’s all.  Stamps up an’ facin’ me.”

“Oh, I get it!” I shouted loudly, to make sure they could hear me in back.  “This was a learning exercise!  I either place my letters in my mailbox properly, or you will punish me by not mailing them!”

Refrigerator started to turn a shade of purple never before seen on this planet.

“I’ll be sure to place my letters in properly from now on,” I said.  Then I turned to leave and faced at least two dozen people waiting in line (most of them not looking at the loud crazy guy).

“Okay, folks,” I shouted, “cell phones out.  Get ready to dial 954-722-4476.  Anyone who gets an answer instead of a busy signal gets ten dollars on the spot.”

Refrigerator had come out onto the floor.  “Sir,” he said, “I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

I left.  I have since left many letters in my mailbox.

Preparing for a return engagement at my post office, I have deliberately placed my envelopes face down.  And as far away from “the back” as possible.  Refrigerator has mailed every single one of them.  I think he’s afraid of me.

2 – Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

I almost never write anything political; I like to protect my editors. Ergo, let it be known that any comments about politicians or our government are strictly my own. I have no idea where my editors and publishers are on the political spectrum, but my beliefs are so ultra-liberal I consider Communism a right-wing concept.

It should come as no surprise, therefore, that I believe Senator Cruz has one of the finest political minds of the Nineteenth Century.

When he returned home from Washington during the Christmas holidays, he said, “It’s nice to be back in the United States again.”

In a recent speech in Palm Beach, he claimed “It seems like President Obama is trying to go down the Bill of Rights and violate each one of them one at a time.”

Cruz continues to castigate the new Affordable Care Act.  He adamantly opposes gun control.  He has a lot of problems with new immigration reforms.  And because Cruz is so out of touch with ordinary, everyday Americans, I am fervently hoping the myopic Republican Party nominates him for president in 2016.

3 – My old “friend,” Ken.

I grew up with Ken. Good-looking guy. Very popular. Great third baseman. Brilliant student. Very successful lawyer.

I have always hated him.

Ken spent his teen years one-upping me.  I’d get a “B+” on a test, he’d get an “A-.” I’d hit a double and drive in a run, he’d hit a triple and drive in two. I went out with Audrey Stern once; he went steady with her for three months.

Ran into Ken last time I was in Chicago.  Hadn’t seen him in more than 40 years.  First thing he did was ask me what my bucket list was.

“I haven’t finalized it yet,” I said.  “What’s yours?”

“Well, I’ve just planted new rose bushes; been wanting to do that for years.  This fall, we’re going to China to walk down The Great Wall.  And I’m finally going to finish reading, ‘The Magic Mountain.’”

“Ambitious list,” I said, long-forgotten homicidal thoughts bubbling near-surface.

“You sure you haven’t finalized on yours yet?”

I thought … okay, time to lie.

“Listen, Ken, if you can keep a secret, I did follow through on one item on my bucket list.  It involves Scarlett Johannsen.”

“The actress!?

“Sh-h!”

“But Scarlett Joha—“

“Sh-h.”

“But what – ?”

“Use your imagination, Ken.”

I left him gaping.  So much for mellowing.

Ålesund and Sunnmøre:  An Intersection of Natural and Cultural Treasures

Story and Photos by Terri Marshall

Imagine a land enchanting enough to inspire the landscapes for an Oscar winning picture.  Norway is such a place and if you saw Disney’s animated masterpiece, Frozen, you were treated to glimpses of Norway.   From the mountains to the sea each landscape is inspiring, each town intriguing and each experience alluring. The Norwegian fjords are among the most famous nature-based attractions in the world and the Ålesund and Sunnmøre region of Norway has an abundance of them.  In fact, this little piece of Norway is chock full of natural and cultural treasures.  Here are a few of my favorite experiences.

Strolling through Ålesund’s Town Center

Alesund

On a winter’s night in 1904, Ålesund was devastated by fire leaving 10,000 people homeless and 850 homes in ashes.  In a span of three years, the entire town rose from the ashes.  Rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style that was prevalent throughout Europe at the time, the charming yellow, salmon, blue and rose buildings are ornamented with a myriad of turrets, spires, medieval ornaments and dragons earning Ålesund UNESCO World Heritage status.  Recently voted the most beautiful town in Norway, Ålesund is an architectural art gallery.

The Art Nouveau Centre/Jugendstilsenteret offers unparalleled insight into the story of the great fire of 1904.  Located in the former “Swan Pharmacy”- one of Ålesund’s most characteristic Art Nouveau buildings – the center has a time machine ready to transport you back a century.

The View from Above

The rugged coastline, deep fjords and high mountains in the Sunnmøre Alps are a hiker’s paradise.  The terrain offers easy walks, challenging climbs and everything in between.  There are even glacier hikes available year-round.

Ålesund is one of only a few places in the world with hiking opportunities in the center of town.   Climb the 418 steps up to Fjellstua at the top of MountAksla for an unforgettable panoramic view of Ålesund, the coast and the surrounding mountain and fjord landscape.  If hiking up 418 steps isn’t appealing, hitch a ride on the Town Train in the city center and ride up!  Whatever you do, don’t miss this view.

Open Air Museum

Sunnmøre Museum

Wander through the time capsule of this open air museum to learn more about the cultural history of Norway.  Historic wooden buildings with rooftops sprouting grass have been restored to show life as it was in years gone by.  There is even a collection of historic Viking boats just begging for a sail!  Every Wednesday during the summer, the museum hosts activity day for young and old alike with – among other things- potato cake grilling, boat building, learning to tie knots and more.

Wildlife Sea Safari

As pretty as the town is, venturing out is a must.  Just a few hours after my arrival, I boarded a high speed RIB boat for a thrilling bumpy ride into the ocean.  Our destination…Runde Island, population 150 humans and over 500,000 birds!   The bird cliffs of Runde are the southernmost in Norway and have the widest variety of sea bird species in all of Scandinavia. Every nook of the craggy cliffs is teeming with life as colonies of great skuas, gannets and shags scramble for their nesting zones.  About 100,000 pairs of puffins nest on Runde from February to August.   Puffins are better swimmers than flyers and we found a flock of them splashing about in the waters as we drifted past. RundeIsland isn’t only known for its massive bird population.  In 1725 the Dutch ship “Akerendam” shipwrecked on the island spilling gold coins creating a “Treasure Island.”

Alnes Lighthouse

Plenty of islands have lighthouses, but the fishing village of Alnes has a

Alnes Lighthouse

lighthouse that doubles as an art gallery displaying around 100 watercolors by Norway’s famous artist,  Ørnulf Opdahl – who just happens to be a personal friend of the Queen of Norway.  The top of the lighthouse yields even more magnificent views of the surrounding region.  When you finish your climb and art browsing, stop by the former lighthouse keeper’s residence where young women from the village carry on the age old tradition of baking homemade cakes for guests.  Don’t be surprised if the Queen makes an appearance – it happens.

The Fjord Experience

I’ve been to some beautiful places in my life…places of jaw-dropping beauty.  But cruising through the fjords of Norway truly took my breath away. I boarded a small boat in Ålesund for the first leg of the journey through the majestic Hjorundfjord. World class glaciers – still frozen in late July – crowned the mountain peaks.  At every turn there were endless ribbons of waterfalls cascading down dramatic cliffs to the water below.  Moss topped farm houses painted red and gold dotted the landscape while sheep grazed precariously perched on the steep hillsides.

Whiskey Falls

Arriving at the tiny village of Oye, the trip continued by bus.  In Hellesylt I transferred to a ferry for a cruise through Geirangerfjord to the town of Geiranger.   At this point it was hard to imagine Mother Nature could produce anything more beautiful than I had already seen, but she did.

As the ferry cruised along, sea gulls kept pace.  More waterfalls unfolded and even more dramatic cliffs emerged.  One of the highlights was the Seven Sisters Waterfall – seven streams of water plunging into the deep fjord below.  Legend says the waterfall across the fjord desperately tried to convince at least one of the sisters to be his bride.  Rejected he turned to whiskey – and the waterfall clearly outlines his whiskey bottle.

The spectacular journey concluded in the town of Geiranger where I found not only the cutest little chocolate shop in the world, but also a group of rowdy Vikings.  I love Norway.

Health & Fitness

The Art of Breathing

By Cheryl AlkerCheryl Alker

The weather at this time of year just wants to make you take a good long breath and enjoy the benefits of fresh air, but did you know just how good for you that breath could be?

Of course, we all know how to breathe. It is something that occurs to us automatically, spontaneously, naturally. We are breathing even when we are not aware of it. So it seems foolish to think that we should take time to learn how to breathe or focus on the quality of our breath. Yet, our breathing often becomes modified and restricted in various ways, not just momentarily, but habitually. We develop unhealthy habits without being aware of it. Our posture can greatly affect our capacity to breathe efficiently, it is therefore vital for us to address good postural alignment.  A slouched position will reduce the ability of our diaphragm (the main breathing muscle) to work efficiently and will diminish lung capacity.

Oxygen is the most vital nutrient for our bodies.  It is essential for the health of the brain, nerves, glands and internal organs. One of the major secrets of vitality and rejuvenation is a purified blood stream. The quickest and most effective way to purify the blood is by taking in extra supplies of oxygen from the air we breathe. By purifying the blood stream, every part of the body benefits, as well as the mind. Your complexion will become clearer and brighter and wrinkles will begin to fade away. In short, rejuvenation will start to occur.

The average person reaches peak respiratory function and lung capacity in their mid-20’s then they begin to lose respiratory capacity between 9% and 25% for every decade of life.  So, unless you are doing something to maintain or improve your breathing capacity, it will decline, and with it, your general health and your life expectancy. In fact the respiratory system should be responsible for eliminating 70% of your metabolic waste.

Out of all the fitness techniques in the world yoga has to be, without a doubt, the “King” of utilizing and understanding the power of the breath. The art of breathing is known as pranayama and several techniques are practiced.

In past columns I have explained the “Cleansing Breath” and “Alternate Nostril Breathing”, below are three more techniques for you to add to your armor.

Ujjayi pranayama: Ujjayi breathing (to become victorious or to gain mastery) consists of a gentle breath that is both relaxed and energized, allowing for a balance. Ujjayi pranayama sounds simple enough, in and out through your nose, but on each exhale, you should attempt to make the sound of an ocean wave in the back of your throat, you can achieve this by constricting the back of the throat, similar to the constriction made when speaking in a whisper. It’s important that you’re not trying to ingest more air, but shift the quality of your breath.

Benefits of Ujjayi pranayama include:

  • improved concentration
  • release of tension
  • diminished pain from headaches
  • relief of sinus pressure
  • decrease in phlegm
  • strengthening of the nervous and digestive systems

Kapalabhati pranayama: Kapalabhati is known as the skull-shining breath for good reason. It may feel a little weird at first, but once you get the hang of it, your head and body will both feel far lighter. To begin, start with a deep inhale and forcefully exhale — drawing all the air out of your belly. After your next full inhale, begin to exhale forcefully out through your nose 15 to 30 times quickly without taking an inhale; actively draw your belly in with each percussive exhale. After you’ve completed a full cycle of 15 to 30 quick exhales, passively inhale and exhale for a few breaths and enjoy before another round.

Benefits of Kapalabhati pranayama include:-

  • Relaxation
  • Weight loss
  • Minimizes risks of infections and allergies in the respiratory system.
  • Improves flexibility of the diaphragm
  • Improved energy levels

Sithali pranayama: This is a great technique for those of us living in Florida. It is a cooling breath that has an immediate effect on your entire body’s temperature. Begin by curling up your tongue into a tube-like passage. Inhale through your mouth (keeping your tongue just like this!), then close your mouth and hold your breath for five to 10. Exhale slowly through your nose. Repeat for 15 to 20 times — or whenever you feel sufficiently cooled off! This is a great quick fix if you’re feeling superhot or sticky.

Benefits of Sithali Pranayama include:

  • Improved focus
  • Reduce agitation, anger and anxiety
  • Pacify excess heat in the system

So go on take a breather, it’s good for you!

April, 2014 – Beautiful Local Boardwalks

Beautiful Local Boardwalks

By Bryan Hayes

Walking into the nature center on a bright sunny south Florida Sunday what could be any better?  There was truly not a cloud in the sky, and the wetlands looked even more beautiful than the last time I was here.   The boardwalk was already filled with guests walking, meandering or simply standing there taking in all the natural beauty.

“Is that a bird sitting atop that gentleman’s hat?”  I thought to myslef.

Looking over to my right, there sat a bird standing on his baseball cap not moving as guests walked by, and the man simply stood there.   Of course, people stopped as they approached wondering, I’m sure, if they were seeing thing I was seeing.   That bird seemed to be posing.

According to the man, his name was Mike, he is a male bird who has a girlfriend that has been  building a nest.  Whenever Mike visits, the bird recognizes him and flies to the top of his hat so he can show off for his girlfriend.   As a regular visitor he has been able to build a relationship with the bird.  If the bird, for some reason, does not realize that he is there, he is able to call the bird to him.

The question he gets all the time is if he feeds the bird, and his answer is that he does not.  Many would think that the bird is conditioned with food to seek him out, but he simply knows the bird well enough through repition of visits.   And, I would also say a very heightened degree of connectivity with the animal kingdom.

The lesson for me was two-fold:  one is that you never know what you might see when you get out in nature.  Two, if we only forgo fear we can truly have some pretty amazing conversations with people.  I like to talk to just about everyone, no matter where I am at.  This has added so much value, not only to this trip, but to most everywhere I go because I meet the most fascinating people all the time.

There is something rather amazing about getting out in nature, and for me, Mike really is Living Green.   When someone says they want to be ”one with nature,” I am not sure how much more connected you can get than being able to have that sort of connection with a wild bird.

If you have not yet ventured out and seen some of the breathtaking places that are right here in your back yard I will recommend two for you.  They are the Peaceful Waters Sanctuary and the Wellington Envrionmental Preserve. Peaceful Waters is located at the south east corner of VillagePark, is a 26 acre wetlands park that includes 1,500 feet of elevated nature boardwalks.  There is also one mile of walking trails. The park features an assortment of displays illustrating the variety of animals and plant species native to South Florida.

The Wellington Environmental Preserve, located at 3499 Flying Crow Road, is 365-acre facility.   It includes a boardwalk, paved pedestrian trails, horse trails and learning centers, including a six-story observation tower.

Wellington Debate Team sets Multiple Records

Wellington Debate set multiple team records at the 2014 Palm Beach Catholic Forensic League “Grand Finals” national championship qualifier tournament Saturday, March 29, at William T. Dwyer High School.

A dozen Wolverines will invade the Windy City over Memorial Day Weekend to compete at this year’s NCFL national championship – the most ever to represent Wellington at CatNats.

In addition, Wellington took first place overall in three events at Grand Finals – Congressional Debate, Lincoln Douglas Debate, and Public Forum Debate. It was the most first-place finishes Wellington has achieved at the national qualifier.

In Congressional Debate, junior Michael Leatherman earned the top spot among nearly 50 students, 19 of whom advanced to the final round. Three other Wellington debaters – junior Kwadjo Walker, sophomore Victor Sanchez, and freshman Pallavi Taneja – also advanced to the finals of Congressional Debate.

In Lincoln Douglas Debate, senior Yourui Ruan went 5-0 in taking first place. And in Public Forum Debate, the team of seniors Vinnie Gasso & Caitlyn Konopka also went 5-0 in taking top honors.

In PFD, seniors Greg Foster & Kevin Murphy, and freshmen Gillian Kruisland & Caramen McDaniel, also qualified.

Wellington also has a pair of Duo Interpretation competitive acting teams qualify for Chicago: senior Dylan Race & sophomore Savannah Race (performing “Employees Must Wash Hands … Before Murder” by Don Zolidis), and sophomores Antoinette Gray & Cameron Harker (performing Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park”).

Three additional National Forensic League honor degrees were earned by Wellington. Dylan Race surpassed 500 points (Degree of Special Distinction), Olivia Davy passed the 250-point level (Degree of Distinction), and Pallavi Taneja earned her Degree of Honor by passing hte 75-point mark. Wellington now has 266 total degrees, most in the Florida Oceanfront NFL District.

Wellington Debate is coached by Paul L. Gaba.
