MLK Day Commemorates Its 20th Celebration In Lake Worth

A full slate of activities will be held this year in Lake Worth in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 20th under the theme, Twenty Years of Making the Dream Real. MLK Day Festivities were first organized in Lake Worth in 1995 through the cooperation of then-Mayor Rodney Romano and newly elected city commissioner Retha Lowe. The neighborhood group, Citizens on Task (COT), played a vital role in mobilizing community support.

This year’s celebration will begin at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 10th Avenue South and E Street with an interfaith prayer breakfast from 7:30 – 9 AM. In addition honoring Dr. King with prayer and choir performances, founding members of COT will share their recollections.

The annual Candlelight March through downtown Lake Worth will follow at 5 PM as participants gather at City Hall and parade down Lake Avenue to the MLK “Ball” Memorial. Included will be young and old; veterans of the civil rights movement as well as a multitude of church and school groups. A brief commemorative program at the Memorial will recognize the progress that the City of Lake Worth has made over its 100 year history toward fulfillment of Dr. King’s Dream.

Following the March, a Fellowship Dinner is planned at First Baptist Church. The church is located at Second Ave. South and M Street, just a block south of the Memorial. Light entertainment is planned. The free dinner will provide an opportunity for warm fellowship across religious and racial lines in the spirit of Dr. King. Sponsoring religious and civic organizations will provide the food and beverages. Members of the general public are invited to help with the dinner preparations which will begin at First Baptist at 4 PM or to contribute a side dish or a dessert.

Dr. King’s Dream encompassed the hopes and dreams of all Americans. Members of every racial, religious and ethnic group in Palm Beach County are invited to join Lake Worth residents in their celebration of the diversity of our community. All events are free of charge to the public, sponsored by the City of Lake Worth, Kiwanis Club, Lake Worth Interfaith Network and the Lake Worth MLK Committee.

Saxophonist Luis Alas Hosts Concert to Benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand February 1
Smooth jazz artist to lead band of national musicians in fight against childhood cancer at West Kendall Amphitheater
Miami, FL – January 7, 2014 – In an effort to join the battle against childhood cancer, South Florida smooth jazz artist Luis Alas will host a concert at the Miami Baptist Church West Kendall Amphitheater on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a 501 (3) non-profit organization started in memory of Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who succumbed to the disease in 2004.

“I have had a blessed life, not of money and wealth but of amazing opportunities and this talent which I always love to put it to use to help others,” shares Alas. “Cancer took my father from me and it was a tragic loss, but when I read about stories like Alex’s and Bella it hurts me, not only the suffering the children go through, but of the parents, family and loved ones around them.”
Alas and a cast of amazing musicians and vocalists from around the country will be performing in a romantic, smooth jazz at the concert deemed “Romance by Sax.” He released two singles in 2013, one called “Mr. Magic” and the other instrumental remake of the pop ballad “You’re My Everything”, which got as high as #55 on the ReverbNation Jazz chart.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope.
To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $60 million toward fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 275 research projects nationally. Alas adds, “I felt I had to do something and teaming with Alex’s Lemonade Stand felt like the perfect fit so hopefully we can put an end to this horrific illness.” Tickets are $10 for general admission / lawn seating, $20 for VIP (includes reception); military discount available – 15% off with I.D.
The event is generously being sponsored by Miramar Auto Service, SmartSource, Miami Baptist Church, the Downtown Miami & Brickell Chamber of Commerce and T.R.A.P.S. Tactical Response & Protection Services. For more information and tickets, navigate to: www.RomanceBySaxMiami.Eventbrite.com. For more on Luis, visit www.LuisAlas.com.
