Announces Foster Care in Palm Beach County as New Impact Area
Palm Beach County – The Junior League of the Palm Beaches is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities throughout Palm Beach County. Currently involved with local organizations such as Nelle Smith, Vita Nova, and the Department of Juvenile Justice, the League has spent the past year analyzing and assessing the next impact area to focus on for the future.
In early 2013, the League began a year-long community needs assessment to determine programs in dire need of additional assistance within Palm Beach County. This included tremendous research and in-depth discussions with other non-profit, government, and for-profit organizations in Palm Beach County to identify areas of unmet need. The League was looking in particular for a niche that would complement other existing projects and programs, while allowing League members to continue to fulfill our mission to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and improve our community.
Finally, in February 2014, after much discussion and debate amongst the League as a whole, members voted to adopt foster care as our impact area. The League will operate under this impact area for a minimum of 3 years, beginning with the 2014-15 League year this September.

This beginning acting class introduces students to acting for the stage through scene study and monologue preparation. This 10-week class is designed for the amateur adult actor, and will focus on the fundamentals of the craft. The class highlights methods to make your performance more natural and spontaneous. No experience is necessary. A great start for the beginning actor!
Every year Disney’s EPCOT hosts its annual flower & garden festival in the spring. WHEN: Friday, March 28, 2014 – from 6-9 p.m. with the observatory remaining open until 10 p.m. – weather permitting. The Astronomical Society of the Palm Beaches will be on-site to assist stargazers with any questions.
WHO: On the last Friday of every month, the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium hosts a themed ‘Nights at the Museum’– a family friendly opportunity to enjoy extended hours of the Science Center’s typical offerings as well as a chance to view the night sky through the Science Center’s observatory. Once monthly, weather permitting, the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium opens its observatory dome, which rotates to allow for the best views. Guests will be treated to craters, comets and galaxies visible by the telescope.
Monthly ‘Nights at the Museum’ events run from 6pm – 9pm, with the observatory remaining open until 10pm, and every month there is a different theme. Activities often include arts and crafts, animal dissections and dry ice experiments.
WHY: The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, formerly known as the South Florida Science Museum, recently completed a $5 million expansion and renovation and is currently hosting Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition in its newly expanded exhibit hall. With a new mission to “open every mind to science,” the Science Center features more than 50 hands-on educational exhibits, an 8,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquarium- featuring both local and exotic marine life, a digital planetarium, conservation research station, Florida exhibit hall and an interactive Everglades exhibit. All permanent exhibits will be open during the Titanic’s special showing.
Volunteers are needed for the Great American Cleanup effort in Lake Worth. On Saturday, April 5, join your neighbors to help clean up the shoreline of Lake Worth Lagoon and Snook Islands area, adjacent to the Lake Worth Municipal Golf Course. The area is littered with old tires, broken bits of lumber, plastic and paper trash. All are welcome to participate in this clean-up effort spearheaded by the Kiwanis Club of Lake Worth in conjunction with Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful.
Volunteers will meet at the clubhouse (located at 7th Ave N and the intracoastal) at 8 AM. You don’t have to be a Kiwanis member to join in the effort, but volunteers must be 18 years old or accompanied by a parent.
The Snook Islands area contains some of the most environmentally sensitive shoreline in Palm Beach County, providing fish hatchery and habitat for dolphins and wading birds.
All participants are asked to park in the golf course parking lot the morning of the event. Golf carts will be used to shuttle volunteers to the cleanup locations along the length of the shoreline. Plenty of garbage bags and latex gloves will be provided. Please be sure to wear old clothes, closed-toed shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats if you have them.

Great American Cleanup, America is the largest litter reduction and community improvement project in the USA. This national event is sponsored by more than 500 affiliates of Keep America Beautiful. Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful is assisted locally by the Solid Waste Authority.

Starting every First and Third Friday in April, FlowSource will be presenting a flowing team of powerful, creative, and joyful individuals dedicating their lives to what they love to do best. These artists are excited to share many forms of performance arts. They will mesmerize, captivate, and amaze you. You will laugh and join in the fun. Fifth AnnualPEEPS SHOW at Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery, 15 South J Street in Downtown Lake Worth. The PEEPS SHOW will open on April 4 and run through April 17. Artists from all over the region present little scenarios made with marshmallow PEEPS. In the past we saw “Little Bo PEEPS”, “The Life of PEEP,” “The Beetles as PEEPS” and the “College of PEEPS.” Hundreds of visitors file past the PEEPS exhibit each year. Prizes will be awarded for the most creative PEEPS of all. Visitors to the opening will be given a token to drop into their favorite PEEPS exhibit. First place winner will be determined by a panel of local celebrities. The four additional winners will be determined by token count.
TheLake Worth Playhouse and the Stonzek Movie Theater are the finest antiques Lake Worth has to offer. The buildings are architectural gems, well worth the visit. Sitting inside the theater brings you back 100 years. Within the beautiful surroundings of this glorious theater, you can experience wonderful and affordable productions. The Stonzek Movie Theater shows independent and rare films seen nowhere else in the county.

They will have a live concert outside the gallery with musicians Gyorgy Lakatos, Eastern European gypsy music, Gin, one of the twins from In-house, acoustic rock and Marie Nofsinger, folk/country acoustic. Inner Chord is a 501c3 non-profit organization. The mission is to provide students in Palm BeachCounty with educational programs that will improve literacy rates. The programs will educate students in language arts through the visual arts.
Second Semi-Annual Zombie Crawl in Downtown Lake Worth will take place on Saturday, April 26th. A dedicated costumed bevy of fun-loving folks invade Lake Worth’s downtown for an afternoon and evening of contests, prize winning and adventure. It is as much fun to watch these strange and dramatic goings on as it is to be a part of it. One might think that these “crawls” are drunken brawls. Metal Clay Classes for Charity: Ruth Ekiert of Trinkets and Treasures teaches regular classes in metal clay and resins to raise funds for a local non-profit. Metal Clays can be worked with to make jewelry and art objects. Once fired in a kiln, the clay burns out and you are left with silver, copper or brass. Most classes cost $140 plus materials for a four hour class. Ruth charges $75 including materials. Groups are welcome. Classes are set up at your convenience. Six person minimum.

When Sarah Clein found out that her four-year-old cousin Aaron had cancer, she realized how important Facetime was for staying in touch with him. For the majority of Aaron’s time in the hospital he could not have his cousins and friends visit, but he was able to communicate with his iPad.
“We would show him what we were doing – like playing with Legos or playing in the backyard,” says Sarah. “Aaron would show us his new toys or what was going on in the hospital or sometimes we would just make silly faces at each other.”
Aaron had a tumor on his spine. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ewing’s Sarcoma. It’s a rare disease, and only 250 kids a year are diagnosed with it. “It was a terrible,” says Deborah Clein, Sarah’s mother. Eleven-year-old Sarah is the founder of Aaron’s iPad Lending Library. Their mission is to get iPads into the hands of children in cancer units at local hospitals. Sarah launched the project as a 4th grade community service project and drew up a plan for a school assignment. And it continues to grow.
“Aaron’s iPad was his safe connection to the outside world,” says Deborah. The iPads also allow kids to communicate with each other within the hospital. The children have to remain still for lengthy procedures. Whether it’s listening to music, playing games or Facetiming with loved ones, the iPads brighten their days and keep kids connected.
Today Aaron has been cancer-free for fifteen months. He has to return to the hospital for scans every three months and will have scans for the next five years. The whole family is involved in the iPad project – Aaron’s parents, Beth and Josh knew when Aaron was in treatment that they wanted to give back so they started TeamAaron.org “It is a wonderful opportunity for our entire family to pay it forward.”
So far they have delivered 17 iPads to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, 10 iPads to Palm Beach Children’s Hospital and 17 iPads to Holtz Children’s Hospital. “The money that we collect goes to giving out iPads,” says Deborah.

They are happy to deliver new iPads, used iPads, Kindle Fires, Nooks or any electronic device along those lines that will keep cancer patients connected. “We will happily take any device that would entertain children,” says Deborah.

His smile can light up a room. He loves to wear costumes, play with his brother and donate toys and give back to hospitals.
Sarah is a fifth grader at Binks Forest Elementary school and just returned from her safety patrol trip to Washington, DC. She also loves to read, loves science and enjoys doing science experiments at home. She was just notified that she has won the Jefferson Award from WPTV for her work on Aaron’s iPads. Her brothers Daniel (15) and Jonathan (7) are happy to help with the iPad project as well.
Aaron’s family is grateful for Otterbox and Trident cases for donating to their cause. The Village of Wellington recently donated 8 older excessed iPads. Other donations have come from Best Buy of Wellington. Little Smiles, the Palm Beach Sheriff’s office and many individual donations. One local family gave an iPad instead of doing their Christmas gift exchange.
