South Florida Science Center and Aquarium announces new ‘Float it’ competition to annual Drop it, Build it

(West Palm Beach, Fla.) –The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium wants to know, as it prepares for its 28th Annual Drop it, Build it, Float it, Launch it, Thrill it engineering competition.  ‘Float it’ will be new this year, replacing the former ‘Fly it’ segment of the day-long event.   Elementary, middle and high school students from all over South Florida are invited to compete for nearly $5,000 in prize money up for grabs.  The competition takes place on Saturday, April 12, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m and the deadline to register is April 4, 2014.  Contest entry is free to each registrant and includes a complimentary lunch for the participant! The community is invited to watch the excitement as local kids demonstrate their ingenuity and science skills.  A new incentive this year includes a special prize for the school with the most participants.

The contest celebrates engineering ingenuity with entrants able to participate in five different design contests.  Competitors will see if they have a good egg or Humpty Dumpty after their egg container takes a three-story drop from a cherry picker in the Drop It competition; or if their bottle rocket will blast off or fizzle out during the Launch It competition.  Bridges will be built, floatable boats will be crafted and roller coasters will operate as students compete for prize money, awarded to the first through fourth place winners in each category.  The competition will be judged by the Florida Engineering Society. The  Science Center is pleased to host this event for nearly 30 years

“With Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition on display, we started thinking ‘Float it’ should be a new element this year,” said Lew Crampton, Science Center CEO.  “Similar to ‘Fly it,’ students will be making their boat on site with everyday household items provided to them.  We are really excited to see how well this new competition is received.  We are grateful for our long-standing partnership with the Florida Engineering Society and for the continued support of many longtime sponsors.  It is our mission to ‘open every mind to science’ and this event encourages children of all ages to pursue careers in engineering, science and math.”

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, formerly known as the South Florida Science Museum, recently completed a $5 million expansion and renovation and is currently hosting Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition in its newly expanded exhibit hall.  With a new mission to “open every mind to science,” the Science Center features more than 50 hands-on educational exhibits, an 8,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquarium- featuring both local and exotic marine life, a digital planetarium, conservation research station, Florida exhibit hall and an interactive Everglades exhibit.

Thanks to support from the Florida Engineering Society, and the support of generous sponsors, students will have the opportunity to take home nearly $5,000 in prize money.  Title sponsors include Ice Legal P.A.  The event is presented by Alvin I. Brown and Peggy S. Brown Charitable Foundation.  Additional sponsors include, Comcast, Consolidated Insurance Group Inc., Modernizing Medicine, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County, Inc., Winn Dixie, B/E Aerospace and Bricks 4 Kidz. PDQ is the official food sponsor for competitors and volunteers.

To register, and for competition rules and regulations, please visit www.sfsciencecenter.org.  Contest entry and lunch are free to each contestant. In addition, two caregivers per registrant will receive half price admission to the Science Center for the day.

CENTRAL PALM BEACH COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION HELPS FUND THE JERMS MCGRAW SECOND CHANCE SCHOLARSHIP FUND AT PALM BEACH ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY

WEST PALM BEACH, FL –  The Central Palm Beach County Community Foundation presented a check last week for $1,000 to support the Jerms McGraw Second Chance Scholarship Fund in a ceremony at Palm Beach Atlantic University.  The Foundation raised the funds at its Annual Community Fitness Run, held this past fall in Wellington.

The scholarship was created in memory of U.S. Marine Corps 2nd Lt. Jeremiah McGraw. Known by his nickname “Jerms,” Lt. McGraw was a student in the MacArthur School of Leadership while serving as a Marine reservist, part of the 4th ANGLICO unit in West Palm Beach.

Lt. McGraw died on Sept. 10, 2009, during a training exercise in Central Florida while serving his country. He was 22. Prior to his death, Lt. McGraw earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational management from PBA.

“Jerms McGraw was a patriotic hero who is now saluted by both Palm BeachAtlanticUniversity and the Central Palm Beach County Community Foundation,” says William M. B. Fleming, Jr., President of Palm Beach Atlantic University.  “Through the Foundation’s advocacy, community members can participate in passing along Lt. McGraw’s commitment to character and country.”

This type of scholarship program is an endowed scholarship.  The principal of the endowment is never spent, so the endowment funds scholarships in perpetuity.  As the funds mature, the scholarship awards increases with time.  Wayne Burns, CEO of the Central Palm Beach County Community Foundation said, “We are happy to make long lasting investments in our community and people who need a second chance.”

Mary Lou Bedford, Executive Vice President of the Central Palm Beach County Community Foundation, presented the check to William M. B. Fleming.  In attendance were the parents of Jeremiah McGraw, Tim and Juanita McGraw, who are committed to growing the Scholarship Fund each year.

The contribution made today by the Foundation will boost the Scholarship Fund to over $26,000.  To date, the Scholarship Fund has supported four students.  Three additional students will be presented with the Jerms McGraw Second Chance Scholarship at the University’s Speaker Series lecture on Thursday, April 3rd.  Jimmy Collins, former president and chief operating officer of Chick-fil-A, will speak at the event hosted by the Catherine T. MacArthur School of Leadership at Palm BeachAtlanticUniversity and the PBA Alumni Association. The event will be held 6:30pm at the DeSantis Family Chapel at 300 Okeechobee Blvd., in West Palm Beach.  The presentation is free and open to the public.

March, 2014 – Palm Beach Fine Craft Show with WHS Students

Field Trip to the Palm Beach Fine Craft Show a big hit with Students Enrolled in the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Program at Wellington High School

ArtStart_ESE01

Wellington, FL – For the past three years, Wellington based nonprofit ArtStart has been delivering arts education programs to Wellington high school students who have been diagnosed with intellectual disabilities and autism.  For the second year in a row, that education included a trip to the recently concluded Palm Beach Fine Craft Show, where eighteen students enjoyed seeing, touching and learning about contemporary American craft.

“They love this event so much,” said ArtStart founder and president Jeannette Pomeroy Parssi, who led the students on a tour of the show. “The students were so engaged,” she said, “and full of questions for the artists; who were more than happy to talk about their work.  Some encouraged the students to touch the work, or the materials used to create it, which went over very well with everyone.”

Initial funding for the program with Wellington’s ESE students is being provided by ArtStart’s board of directors. The program is fully funded for the 2013-2014 school year, and “hopefully we can secure funding to continue into the next school year,” said Parssi.

The goal of Wellington-based ArtStart, Parssi explained, “is to make the arts accessible to all.” To that end, the organization has worked with a number of area non-profits to develop and implement art programs that address specific needs and help forward its goals.  “We worked with the Mental Health Association, for example, to create a program that used theater to teach important life lessons to kids and teens,” said Parssi. “A program we delivered to the Potentials Charter School, which is part of the ARC of Palm Beach County, allowed students with severe disabilities to create their very own works of art; we also took those kids to museums and galleries, so they could enjoy the wonderful artwork on display.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation in support of this or other ArtStart projects should contact Jeannette Pomeroy Parssi at (561) 635-2037, or visit the ArtStart website at www.ArtStartInc.org
