December, 2013 – Wellington Announces Employee of the Month October 2013

Wellington Announces Employee of the Month October 2013

Congratulations to Wellington’s Audrena Scurry for being chosen as Employee of the Month for October 2013.

Audrena joined the Village of Wellington in October of 2011 as a Document Management Assistant for the Clerk’s Office.  Audrena has provided document management support to many departments in addition to the Clerk, including Parks & Recreation, Code Compliance, Payroll, Finance, and Purchasing.  She was recently transferred to Human Resources because of her exemplary work on personnel files and her assistance with the audit.  Over the past year Audrena has worked tirelessly to convert all active personnel files from paper copies to electronic copies.  She played an active role in promoting the transparency initiative with her acute attention to detail and tireless efforts through her scanning.  Audrena has a very proactive positive attitude, and is a dedicated team player who offers viable, sustainable solutions.

Audrena continues to be instrumental in supporting Wellington’s Transparency Initiative – without her dedication and devoted work ethic; the transition to digital employee files would not be where it is today. Audrena tirelessly reviewed employee files to ensure accuracy, and her heroic “behind the scenes” efforts during the conversion process enabled us to build a more efficient and accurate system in Laserfiche.  She takes “ownership” of her projects and often finds more efficient ways of accomplishing her goals, always with a smile on her face.   We are lucky to have her as a part of the Human Resources team!

Kim Gibbons, Human Resources Director

Audrena provides exemplary work in the challenging world of records management.  Constant attention to detail is required.  Audrena gives meaning to transparency in reporting with her tireless service, and goes beyond the day-to-day responsibilities by ensuring accuracy, accountability, and follow through.  Her quiet professionalism is an exemplary standard for all.

Tanya Quickel, Director of Administration and Financial Services

December, 2013 – Heart Disease, the Number One Killer of Women

0

Ask the Docs

Do you know what causes heart disease in women?  Are you at risk?

By Dr. Christopher Devine, DO

Heart disease has become the number one killer in women. Heart disease is a killer that strikes more women than men, and is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined. Heart disease is the cause of death for one out of three women each year. It’s said that 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors in developing heart disease. Yet only one in every five women believes it’s their greatest health risk.

 What is Heart Disease?

Heart disease can take many other forms; one is that it affects the blood vessels and cardiovascular system. Heart disease can also be in the form of heart failure or congestive heart failure, Arrythmia or abnormal rhythm of the heart, also heart valve problems.

Heart disease can affect all women of all ages; women should see their doctor to have their risk for developing heart disease determined. Here are some statistics: This year more than 920,000 Americans will have a heart attack; nearly half of them will occur without prior symptoms or warning signs. 250,000 will die annually of sudden Cardiac Death. Under age 50, women’s heart attacks are twice as likely as men’s to be fatal. Specific scoring systems for women have been developed which take into account various factors including diabetes and vascular disease. Based on these scoring systems, a doctor can recommend specific lifestyle modifications including healthy diets and exercise programs. There is no single test that can diagnose Heart Disease but the following diagnostic tests such as a EKG (Electrocardiogram), Stress Testing, Chest X-ray, Echocardiography, Cardiac Catherization, CT Heart Scan along with some different types of testing will help your doctor detect irregularity, and/or abnormality in your heart.

How can you help prevent it?

The key to prevention is to start at a very early age. As a result, even the very elderly can benefit from measures to reduce elevated blood pressure, stop smoking, manage your blood sugar, lower your cholesterol, maintain an active lifestyle, eat healthy etc. In addition to your lifestyle, periodic checkups by your health care professional can prevent problems in the future by identifying potential risk factors that can be managed with the appropriate therapies

Because of healthy choices and knowing the signs, more than 627,000 of women have been saved from heart disease, and 330 fewer are dying per day. What’s stopping you from taking action on your health?

Howlin’ Hoedown 2014

International Polo Club Palm Beach

Saturday, January 25, 2014

Dear Friend,

We are proud to announce the Third Annual Howlin’ (and Meowing!) Hoedown will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at International Polo Club Palm Beach from 6:30 ‘til 11:00 p.m.  This event will offer participants a fun-filled, casual evening which will include a silent auction, live auction, line-dancing, Asado-style BBQ dinner and just a plain-old howlin’ good time!  In the process, we will be raising money to support A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue, a local non-profit no-kill animal rescue that operates via a home fostering network, which is devoted to saving the lives of unwanted pets.  They provide a home and care for dogs and cats until they are adopted into the right, “furever” home.

As part of the evening’s festivities, we will have both a Silent Auction and a Live Auction, and, that is where you come in!   We need the support of area businesses and individuals in order to make the auction a success.  Please consider donating a gift certificate or item to the auction in furtherance of our fund-raising goals.  We will provide you, as a donor, with significant recognition at the event for your generosity, and with a personal letter of acknowledgement.  Your business will be listed in the event program which is given to all of the Howlin’ Hoedown’s guests—expected to be in excess of 250 people who represent the Western Communities’ business and community leaders.

For additional information on donating to, sponsoring or attending the event, please contact Maureen Gross (561) 714-0887 or Hope Barron at (561)795-4448.  We would be happy to arrange for someone to pick up any item that you can donate, or you can mail it to:
