Peter Robinson and Wellington Greenmarket to Sponsor September 30th “State of the City” Luncheon Featuring Wellington Mayor Bob Margolis as Key Note Speaker

Peter Robinson and Wellington Greenmarket to sponsor September 30th State of the City LuncheonSeptember 19— Wellington- FL— The Wellington Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to announce Peter Robinson and the Wellington Greenmarket as sponsor of the Chamber’s September 30th “State of the City” with Mayor Bob Margolis.

The name Peter Robinson is practically synonymous with green markets in Palm Beach County. Peter made his (first)mark with the West Palm Beach Green Market in 1995, when he was hired by the City of West Palm Beach to head up its new outdoor market, which he grew from six vendors in its second year to more than 70 vendors less than a decade later.

Under Peter’s direction, the West Palm Beach Green Market became one of the top farmers markets in the country, owing to his exceptional sourcing and cultivating of the best regional farmers, local growers and boutique food businesses.  In 2005, Peter left to launch Oceanside Farmers Market at Lake Worth Beach, the first market designed and operated under the auspices of his company, Mildly Delirious Design.

A loyal faction of vendors followed Peter to his new ventures; the Lake Worth Farmers Market and the Wellington Green Market where he has helped incubate several specialty-food businesses over the years. A devotee of the Paris markets (both food and flea), Peter conceived and launched an artisan-driven flea market three years ago, adjacent to the Lake Worth Farmers Market, that he called, Canal St. South. Taking its name from lower Manhattan’s bargain-shopping mecca and its soul from the famed flea markets of Paris, Canal St. South was an instant hit among patrons and vendors alike it has been duplicated at the Wellington Green Market, which is in its third year with 60+ vendors providing the western Palm Beach County communities seasonal access to locally grown produce, plants, fresh artisan breads, herbs, seafood, cheeses and more.

The event will be at the Wanderer’s Club on September 30th, 2013. This event will sell out so please get your reservations in early!!!

Cost to attend this luncheon is $ 20.00 for Chamber Members with RSVP and $30.00 for non-members and the general public.  Registration is 11:30 AM and the luncheon begins promptly at noon!  RSVP’s are required to attend this event.

Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup Announced for September 21

September 20, 2013 – Press Release with attached ICC Fact Sheet.

Volunteer for the movement for Trash Free Seas and help clean up our coastline with Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful

The Ocean Conservancy announced the date for the 28th annual International Coastal Cleanup, a global event that mobilizes hundreds of thousands of people to take action for our ocean, for September 21.  By joining the movement for Trash Free Seas, volunteers will help clean up trash already in the ocean and work to reduce their own trash impact before it happens.

Trash in our ocean is an issue that affects wildlife, the environment and our economy. But everyone has a role that they can play in helping  – with the first step being to volunteer for the International Coastal Cleanup.

“Last year, volunteers picked up a quantity of trash equivalent to the weight of 10 jumbo jets, which demonstrates the more people who come out, the bigger an impact we can have,” said Nicholas Mallos, marine debris specialist of Ocean Conservancy’s Trash Free Seas program. “Seeing the trash along beaches and waterways makes you realize: just because trash is thrown away and out of sight doesn’t mean it’s out of our ocean. And the continuous need for the Cleanup indicates we’re not winning the battle upstream. The Cleanup is a starting point and just one way people can help fight the problem of ocean trash.”

The Cleanup is centered on Ocean Conservancy’s goal of tackling trash at every point in its lifecycle. While cleaning up trash that’s already made it to our waterways is vital, it’s not enough. Through individual responsibility, innovative science, smart public policy and industry leadership, we can find comprehensive solutions to the problem of ocean trash that will lead to healthier beaches and a healthier ocean.

“Every piece of trash that is picked up during the Cleanup should be a challenge for change,” said Mallos. “The trash that tops our top 10 list every year – things like cigarette butts, bags and bottle caps – include disposable plastics meant for one-time usage. These items simply do not belong in our natural environment.”

Local non-profit, Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc., an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, coordinates the Cleanup in Palm Beach County. Last year, during the International Coastal Cleanup 2012, in Palm Beach County alone, over 3,000 volunteers picked up more than 31,000 lbs of trash from Palm Beach County beaches, lakes, and participating neighborhoods. From the information provided by volunteers, the source of most of the trash and debris comes from shoreline and recreational activities (58.30%) and smoking-related activities (26.87%).

This year in Palm Beach County, local volunteers will gather at multiple locations on September 21 with additional cleanup dates before and after the official worldwide event. Most cleanup events begin at 8:00 a.m. with some later start times. For a list of sites, dates, and times, please visit www.keepPBCbeautiful.org  or call (561) 686-6646.   Community Service Hours will be given. Volunteers should pre-register by contacting the volunteer coordinators listed for each site. Volunteers are encouraged to wear hats, sunscreen, sturdy shoes and bring water and they should verify what supplies will be provided at their chosen Site with the Volunteer Coordinator. Free International Coastal Cleanup t-shirts will be given to volunteers while supplies last.

Ocean Conservancy International Coastal Cleanup Partners

The Coca-Cola Company has supported Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup for the past 18 years. As part of its commitment to address global climate change, Bank of America has supported the Cleanup since 2002, with thousands of employees participating in Cleanup events all around the world. Obituary for Bob Markey Sr., founder of The Town-Crier and a Palms West leader

A Message from Bob Markey II about his Father’s Passing

Hi Again,

You might have already heard, but considering Dad’s reach and long list of friends, personal and professional acquaintances, I wanted to be sure to inform you personally that Bob Markey Sr. passed away on Saturday at age 80. He was a great and wonderful man, father and family leader and we can’t replace him. We are much more sad and emotional than I thought I we’d be, considering his long illness. We miss him terribly.

Funeral arrangements are being made through Palms West Funeral Home in Royal Palm Beach. A visitation is set from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 (memorial at 5:30pm), funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, at St. Therese Catholic Church on Lake Worth Road in Wellington and veteran’s burial immediately afterward at the South Florida Veterans Administration Cemetery on State Road 7 south of Wellington. The Markey family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of Palm Beach County.

The Levine’s and Caler, Donten, Levine, Cohen, Porter & Veil, P.A., selected CCFA for their charitable involvement when Rebecca, the daughter of Joel and Irene Levine, was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2005.“As we learned more about the diagnosis, and that there was no cure, we knew that we wanted to do more than just sit back and accept what doctors and specialists were telling us,” Irene Levine said. “We wanted to learn more about the disease, we wanted to help others also living with this disease, and we wanted to do all that we could to work towards finding a cure.”

The West Palm Beach walk is part of more than 100 Take Steps walks that are taking place across the country to support those that are affected by digestive diseases. Supporters are encouraged to create a team and help change the lives of the thousands of people affected locally.

There is no registration fee to participate, but all fundraising participants are encouraged to make a donation to receive an event wristband entitling them to food and beverages. Raise $100 and you will receive a Take Steps T-shirt. All registrants raising a minimum of $500 are eligible to win a $500 Target Shopping Spree! Register at www.cctakesteps.org/wpb.

About Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are painful, medically incurable illnesses that attack the digestive system. Crohn’s disease may attack anywhere from the mouth to the anus, while ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon). Symptoms may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever and weight loss. Many patients require hospitalization and surgery.  These illnesses can cause severe complications, including colon cancer in patients with long-term disease. Some 1.4 million American adults and children suffer from Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, with as many as 150,000 under the age of 18.  Most people develop the diseases between the ages of 15 and 35.

About the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’s mission is to cure Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases. The Foundation ranks third among leading health non-profits in the percentage of expense devoted to research toward a cure, with more than 80 cents of every dollar the Foundation spends goes to mission-critical programs. The Foundation consistently meets the standards of organizations that monitor charities, including receiving the highest rating from the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance (give.org) and the American Institute of Philanthropy (charitywatch.org), and also has received a 4-star rating on Charity Navigator.
