(SFSCA) Summer Science Camp will entertain and educate young scientists this summer.  The Science Center is offering nine, one-week sessions now through August 16 for children ages 4 to 12 years old.

Summer Science Camp will feature a different theme of hands-on science exploration each week. During the camp, children can become an astronaut, paleontologist or oceanographer, as well as make potions and crystals, whip up scientific culinary creations, use engineering skills to build a roller coaster and much more! The days will be filled with fun learning, exciting labs, crafts and outside activities led by Science Center expert educators. 

“We’ve done everything possible to ensure an educational, fun and safe experience for all our campers,” said Lew Crampton, CEO of the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. “Not only will this year be filled with exciting new themes, but campers will benefit from the newly expanded and renovated space. The Science Center just completed a $5 million renovation to the former, and well-loved, South Florida Science Museum, which will enhance Science Camp for years to come.  Campers will be able to have fun and gain confidence in science with an opportunity to interact with our new permanent exhibits, like Science on a Sphere – a six-foot interactive globe with the ability to tell real time and historical planetary data or our much larger aquarium, which includes a pop-up tank for a 360 degree view of the ocean.  With our new mission ‘to open every mind to science,’ we look forward to camp as another opportunity to engage young Einsteins.  We are confident that this Summer Science Camp will be our best yet.”

The Summer Science Camp is held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with extended hours of structured activities available from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekly.  Themes include Out of this World; Build It, Launch It, Thrill It; Potions 101; H2Ocean; Food Frenzy; T-Rex Trek; Superhero Science; Blast Off and Science Stew.  Children can pick their favorite week or sign up for the whole summer.

Founded in 1961, the new South Florida Science Center and Aquarium features fun and educational programming for all ages. In addition to new features, the Science Center has retained some of its most loved hands-on exhibits — a digital planetarium, observatory, in-house Subway restaurant and more.

In celebration of the newly renovated and expanded South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, formerly known as the South Florida Science Museum, the first ‘Science Nights’ theme will be amazingly aquatic.

Guests will dive down deep and back in time as the Science Center’s newest traveling exhibit, Savage Ancient Seas, serves as the back drop for the evening event.  Parents and children with have the opportunity to explore marine science with a wave of ocean activities including demonstrations, labs, crafts and more!  The night will include:

  • Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream Lab
  • Fish Tail Windsock Craft
  • Shark Tooth Necklace Making
  • Professor Clark the Science Shark
  • Touch Tank Pettings

On the last Friday of every month, the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium hosts a themed ‘Science Nights’ (formerly known as ‘Nights at the Museum’)– a family friendly opportunity to enjoy extended hours of the Science Center’s typical offerings as well as a chance to view the night sky through the Science Center’s observatory.  Once monthly, weather permitting, the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium opens its observatory dome, which rotates to allow for the best views. Guests will be treated to craters, comets and galaxies visible by the telescope. 

Monthly ‘Science Nights’ events run from 6pm – 10pm and every month there is a different theme.  Activities often include arts and crafts, animal dissections and dry ice experiments.

If you’re looking for family-friendly Fourth of July entertainment, look no further than the Village of Wellington! Join us from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Wellington Aquatics Complex located at 12150 Forest Hill Boulevard for a patriotic pool party. Admission is free for children ages two and under, $3 for juniors ages three to 17, $5 for adults ages 18 to 54 and $2 for seniors ages 55 and older.

Next, get your red, white and blue ready for Wellington’s annual “A Family Fourth Celebration” from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Village Park located at 11700 Pierson Road. This event includes free bingo sponsored by Humana Inc., traditional games, inflatable rides, face painting, and live music by Brass Evolution. Free shuttle service will be available from the Palm Tran bus stop at the Mall at Wellington Green beginning at 5:30 p.m. Stick around for Wellington’s Fireworks Extravaganza, presented by Zambelli Fireworks International, which begins at 9:15 p.m. at Village Park. West Palm Beach, FL – June 17, 2013 – The American Cancer Society thanked Indian Trail Improvement District for their help and support in the 2013 Relay for Life held April 13. Thanks to extensive community participation, $30,000+ was raised through individual, team, committee, and event fundraising.

The Indian Trail Improvement District was created by the Florida Legislature in 1957 as a special district responsible for the improvements and maintenance of swales, canals, roads, and parks in a 37-square-mile area of central Palm Beach County, Florida serving more than 38,000 residents.

The YWCA of Palm Beach County honored its major donors and volunteers at a luncheon held on June 11, 2013 at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach. The YWCA is celebrating its 96th year of service to Palm Beach County.

The honorees included the Academy for Nursing and Health Occupations, Lost Tree Village Charitable Foundation, Palm Beach Community Trust Fund, PNC Bank-Florida, Royal Poinciana Chapel, Saks Fifth Avenue – Palm Beach, and Town of Palm Beach United Way.

These donors have generously supported the programs of the YWCA that include Harmony House, a secure shelter for abused women and their children; two Child Development Centers; transitional housing for women; Y-Girls, a leadership, education and mentoring program for girls aged 9-13; Y-SAV, students against violence; and a racial justice initiative. Honored for her volunteer commitment was Marjorie Butcher.

The YWCA’s Grace Hoadley Dodge award was presented to Irma Anapol.

Irma Anapol was honored by the YWCA of Palm Beach County at its “Polynesian Paradise” luncheon on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Bear Lakes Country Club.

Ms. Anapol received the YWCA’s prestigious Grace Hoadley Dodge Award presented annually to a woman residing in Palm Beach County who has over-come personal adversity and in doing so has not only empowered herself but has also created opportunities for other women to empower themselves.

A three-time breast cancer survivor, Ms. Anapol committed herself to helping other breast cancer patients by providing counseling to and visiting women in the hospital and at home, often bringing them her famous homemade applesauce and chicken soup and seasonal décor to cheer them. She is a former fashion model and partnered with Estee Lauder, Inc., to provide make-up for patients and teach them how to wear it along with wigs and hats.

Ms. Anapol was active in “Our Kids Sake,” a national educational program for pregnant women, was a vocal critic against harmful pesticides in foods, especially food coloring in baby foods, and has been a major supporter of the YWCA’s Harmony House, a secure shelter for abused women and their children, for many years.

“I can think of no one more deserving of this award than Irma,” said Suzanne Turner, CEO of the YWCA. “She exemplifies all the qualities that the Grace Dodge Award seeks to recognize.”

“When all else fails, Hams get through” Spurs Wellington’s Recognition of Amateur Radio Week

Wellington, 6/16/13 – Because the Internet, cell phones, email and modern communications all require wire, towers, fiberoptic cable or countless small batteries, whole regions find themselves in the dark. Tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, storms, ice and even the occasional cutting of cables leave people without the means to communicate. But not Radio Amateurs, they use just the airwaves!

“The fastest way to turn a crisis into a total disaster is to lose communications,” said Allen Pitts of the ARRL. “From the earthquake and tsunami in Japan to tornadoes in Oklahoma and Missouri, ham radio provided the most reliable communication networks in the first critical hours of the event. Because ham radios are not dependent on the Internet, cell towers or other infrastructure, they work when nothing else is available. We need nothing between us but air.”

When infrastructure fails or is overloaded, the one consistent service that has never failed has been Amateur Radio. That’s why the City of Wellington has recognized the 3rd week in June as “Amateur Radio Week.” On June 22nd and 23rd, volunteers from the Wellington Radio Club will take to the airwaves to join tens of thousands of other Amateur Radio operators in practicing emergency communications skills and testing their equipment. That weekend is called Field Day and is when a national emergency preparedness exercise unfolds.

Village Park will be where the Wellington Radio Club will set up temporary generators, shortwave radio stations and antennas to connect with thousands of other emergency-powered sites throughout North America.

They invite the public to come and see ham radio’s new capabilities and learn how to get their own FCC radio license before the next disaster strikes. The specific location is Pavilion 3, Village Park, 11700 Pierson Road, Wellington.

New President of YWCA for Palm Beach County

Gayle A. Landen has been elected and installed as the new President of the YWCA of Palm Beach County, Florida. Landen has considerable experienceGayle_Landen_Photo_Color_6-13 in leading not for profit organizations in the local community, especially those supporting women and children. She has served as President of the Center for Children in Crisis; American Lung Association of Florida, Southeast Area, Palm Beach; American Society of Training and Development; Executive Women of the Palm Beaches; and the Women’s Chamber of Commerce. She is formerly the Executive Director of Community in Schools.  She is currently the Commander of the Commandery of the Palm Beaches, Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller.

For her professional and volunteer work she has been honored with the ATHENA Award, March of Dimes Woman of Distinction Award, and the Executive Women of the Palm Beaches Woman in Leadership Award for the Volunteer Sector.

Prior to moving to Palm Beach County 26 years ago from Michigan, she had a distinguished career in management with General Motors Corporation.

Also installed at the recent annual membership luncheon of the YWCA were Alexcia Cox, 1st Vice President; Karen Swanson, 2nd Vice President; Theresa LePore, Secretary; and Eileen Daly, Treasurer.  Newly elected to the Board for a two-year term were Henrietta McBee, Linda Wartow and Valerie Wright.

The Palm Beach Photographic Centre’s 17th annual INFOCUS Juried Show will showcase the work of its student members, both inside the Photo Centre and on its Web site, www.workshop.org.  A Best of Show cash prize of $950 will be awarded, as will two Merit Awards for free tuition for a FOTOfusion Passport or a Master Workshop. This year’s winners will be announced at the exhibition’s opening reception on June 19.

The INFOCUS Juror is Raymond Gehman, who has worked for the National Geographic Society since 1986. With three cover photographs and numerous books and articles, he has been on assignment in Yellowstone, Wyoming’s Bighorn Country, Florida’s Sanibel Island Gulf Coast, the Canadian Rockies, the rain forests of Belize, Icelandic glaciers and icebergs, dark Polish forests, and rural China during the People’s Republic 50th anniversary celebration. He has documented grizzly bears, the vanishing prairie dog and wetlands, the ecology of fire, the aftermath of hurricanes, hot pools and nocturnal Apache ceremonial dancers.

Since 1997 PBPC, through Picture My World, serves disadvantaged and delicate children in our community, ages 8-17. Strategic curriculums of photography exploration combined with introspective journal writing teach an appreciation of family and community, while simultaneously promoting the development of non-violent means of expression, self-esteem, personal responsibility and problem solving skills. The lessons create awareness for each student that they are valued and that their voice can make a positive difference in their lives and the lives of others.

Community groups benefiting this year are Boca Raton’s Promise ‘Breaking the Silence for Mental Wellness’,Canstruction Inaugural Project, Lake Worth Community Middle School, and the Place of Hope Child Protection Center.

“A heartfelt thank you is given to all our generous members, private donors, and PNC Foundation, for enabling Picture My World to continue to provide a caring and healthy path for our next generation of community adults,” says Ms. Felice.

Project Graduation Event Provides 289 Wellington High School

2013 Graduating Seniors with an Amazing Celebration

Wellington, FL (June 11) – On Monday, May 21, 289 graduating seniors from Wellington High School enjoyed an all-night party at the Village Park Gym. WELLINGTON PROJECT GRADUATION was a safe celebration of friends, memories and good times with plenty of prizes, food, and entertainment. Karen Herrick, co-chair of the event stated “it is an event coordinated by volunteer parents, raising funds in partnership with community businesses, and dedicated to providing a safe alternative for graduates to celebrate the end of their high school career.” The concept of Project Graduation is to reduce teenage alcohol and drug related accident fatalities as a result of graduation celebrations. The party began at 10 PM on graduation night and the fun continued until 5 AM while graduates were entertained by a DJ, magician, caricature and ink tattoo artists, huge inflatable games/rides, a hypnotist, casino games and much, much more. Food and drinks donated by local restaurants were served throughout the night. “This event was a huge undertaking,” said Herrick, “and it would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of dozens of volunteers and backing from the local business community. Special thanks go out to all the volunteers and supporters who helped make this event possible.”

LOCAL BUSINESS COMMUNITY PROVIDED GENEROUS FINANCIAL SUPPORT

“It costs approximately $25,000 each year to conduct PROJECT GRADUATION which takes some dedicated coordination,” said Herrick. “Fundraisers are an important part of the planning process, and the time to start is now,” she added. The committee held a variety of events to help raise additional funds including a December golf tournament at the Wanderers Club, which brought in approximately $9,000. But the event would not have been the success it was without the generous support of the Wellington business community. The Palm Beach County schools do not provide any funding for this event. Mark and Katherine Bellissimo and the Equestrian Sport Productions Team anchored the event with their generous platinum level sponsorship.

Herrick mentioned, “We had some final sponsorship funds we needed to secure and the Wellington Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and friends, Anne Gerwig and Glenn Straub, pulled together the funds to make sure it would happen. Glenn Straub provided a matching sponsorship to ensure these final financial concerns were taken care of and the event planning moved ahead at full force.” Other gold level sponsorships included Flight Safety International, the Mall at Wellington Green, Southern Waste Systems, Starbucks Coffee Company, Steinger, Iscoe & Greene, Studio One to One, and the Wanderers Club. It was an amazing feeling knowing the business community was behind you to provide a safe and exciting celebration for these high school graduates.”

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP ORGANIZE PROJECT GRADUATION 2014

The 2013 committee will now turn over the planning to volunteer parents of the 2014 graduating class from Wellington High School. “We have a wealth of information and the initial funding to help the new group get off to a fast start. We are looking for a few strong volunteers to step up and begin the plans for next year’s event. “We had fantastic support from the 2012 committee,” said Herrick. “Members of the 2013 committee will be happy to meet with the 2014 volunteers, provide support and answer any questions they might have.” Herrick said, “It was a year filled with planning and fund raising challenges but it was all worth it to see such a diverse group of graduates enjoying their celebration in a safe but fun environment.”

 

The final meeting for volunteers from the class of 2013 and the kick-off meeting for the class of 2014 will meet at Duffy’s at 11935 Southern Boulevard on Wednesday, June 19th from 7 to 8 PM.
