The Plaza Theatre Announces Lineup for Spring/Summer 2013
PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA – South Florida residents and visitors are in for a treat this Spring and Summer as the Plaza Theatre brings a full lineup of shows to their intimate stage.
The Plaza Theatre Conservatory, a group of middle and high school students in training at the Theatre, will perform The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on June 1 at 2:00 and 7:30 and June 2 at 2:00 and 6:00. The hilarious tale is one of overachievers’ angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show’s Tony Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time. Spelling Bee is directed by Melissa Jacobson, choreographed by Ben Solmor, and music directed by Jim Webber. Tickets are $20 for adults; $15 for students.
Next up is 8-track – The Sounds of the 70s, which runs from June 13- July 7, 2013, and will transform the Theatre in to a place of peace, love, and happiness. Created by Rick Seeber, 8-Track is a fast-paced musical performance by a quartet of talented and energetic singers that will have you singing, clapping and dancing along. Enjoy the electric sounds of The Emotions, The Carpenters, La Belle, Barry Manilow, Marvin Gaye, The Doobie Brothers, The Bee Gees, Helen Reddy, K.C.& The Sunshine Band and many more! 8 Track is directed and choreographed by Kevin Black with music directed by Jim Webber.
Returning for its second run this year, from July 24 – September 1, is the smash hit, Waist Watchers The Musical. Written and produced by Alan Jacobson, Waist Watchers is the tale of four women sharing stories about their battles with aging, weight, dieting, exercise, and their significant others. Directed by Andy Rogow, the 90 minute show stars Missy McArdle as Connie, Shelley Keelor as Cindy, Jeanne Bennett as Cheryl, and Katie Angell Thomas as Carla, and features hit songs like Botox Queen, If I Were A Size Two, The World’s Greatest Ice Cream, I Went To The Buffet Line, and more. Don’t miss your chance to catch this hilarious show, before it heads out on an international tour!
The last cabaret show of the spring/summer series will be I’ve Got Rhythm – The Music of George Gershwin featuring Jeanne Lynn Gray and John Lariviere. The shows will run on June 17 and July 1 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30.
Other Conservatory shows this summer will include fan favorite, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, with performances on June 27 and 28th at 7:30 pm and Avenue Q, a laugh out loud musical that tells the timeless story of a recent college graduate on his journey to discover his purpose in life. Avenue Q performances are July 18-19 at 7:30pm.

City of Lake Worth to Celebrate Centennial with Biggest 4th of July Celebration in City’s History – Lake Worth 100
(Lake Worth, FL) – May 6, 2013 – The City of Lake Worth announced today the events planned for the finale of the Lake Worth Centennial Celebration aptly named Lake Worth 100 – set for Thursday, July 4.
“This will be the biggest celebration the city of Lake Worth has seen in its 100 year history,” said Lake Worth Commissioner Andy Amoroso, chair of Lake Worth 100. “We invite everyone in Palm Beach County to celebrate with us for this historical event!”
The festivities kick-off at 10 am with the 11th Annual Great American Raft Race sponsored by the Bryant Park Neighborhood Association. The Parade of Rafts will run through the downtown to the new Bryant Park Boat Ramp beginning at 10 am. The rafts, from Neighborhood Associations, the City of Lake Worth, businesses and local civic groups will launch at 11 am in a mad dash and splash around the course laid out in the Intracoastal with hopes to land Centennial Champion!
At noon, Bryant Park ignites with live music, arts and crafts vendors, food and drink and fun for the entire family culminating with the grand finale fireworks at 9 pm over the Intracoastal Waterway at Lake Ave and Bryant Park. All activities at Bryant Park are free. Come by boat and dock at the new pier facilities or by car, the park is located on the corner of Golfview & Lake Avenues on the Intra-coastal waterway.
The Lake Worth Beach Complex will be the place to be for the ultimate Centennial experience. Enjoy a sunset celebration on the second floor of the Casino building with dancing in the ballroom, gourmet food stations by Callaro’s Steak House, cash bar and VIP viewing of the fireworks over the Intracoastal waterway. Cost is $35 per person and includes dinner, dessert, dancing and reserved tables for ultimate fireworks viewing. Festivities begin at 7 pm and run through 10 pm. Lake Worth Patriotic Explosion
The City of Lake Worth can never let a good holiday go to waste. The 4th of July Weekend is no exception. LULA, The Neighborhood Associations, the City of Lake Worth and the Downtown Cultural Alliance have two days of FREE events planned that include raft races, contests, picnics, music, fireworks and fire lanterns. Family friendly Lake Worth is the place to be on both the 4th and 5th of July. Free parking and free events; contests and prizes; waterfront fireworks and shops filled with holiday discounts and give-aways are all designed to entertain visitors and keep them coming back.
July 4th starts with the Great American Raft Race, not to be missed despite the early hour. Come out to root for you favorite team of weird and wacky concoctions that serve as human flotation devices. Herman Robinson, coordinator of this event, makes sure all vessels launch and wend their way across the pond.
From the Great American Raft Race work you way into Bryant Park for a day of picnicking, socializing, music and fireworks. The park will be filled with vendors and the areas best entertainment. The fun begins at noon. Fireworks take place from 9-10PM.
On Friday, July 5th, the Downtown Merchants and LULA take over.
The DCA celebrates its 4th annual Holiday Explosion. Evening on the Avenue begins at 6PM with celebrations in the Downtown Cultural Plaza, J Street and Lucerne Avenue between L and M Streets. Bands and live music, dancing in the streets, pie baking and watermelon contests, Haitian drummers, will take place throughout the downtown area. A full list of events will be posted on the DCA Facebook page, the LULA website and the Clay Glass Metal Stone Website. The evening ends with lit paper lanterns that will ascend into the sky marking the end of a peaceful and joyful 5th of July end to the holiday weekend.
J Street Happenings: At 9 PM J Street Joins Lucerne in the holiday launching of Peace Lanterns. This beautiful sight will unite both ends of the LULA downtown arts district in the conclusion of this holiday event. Leading up to this display of light will be:
One if by Land- Two if By Sea: Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery: J Street rocks with holiday excitement as the gallery grills corn on the cob, prepares tropical foods and explodes with a nautical exhibit featuring boats, shells and Florida’s natural faunas. Good food, great art, music and holiday fervor.
Coastars Coffee Shop: Plant yourself in front of Coastars at 12 South J Street. Local performers will provide a non-ending evening of music and entertainment. Coastars will be giving out FREE Iced Coffee samples and pastries to celebrate this holiday.
Fat Sal’s- For some of Lake Worth’s tastiest Italian treats, Fat Sal’s at 16 South J will be serving up FREE Italian Food samples. Buy one/ get one ½ off Subs will be served. Look for samples of their outstanding Canolis as well.
Lucerne Street Events: Lucerne anchors the Northeast end of town with great food and music throughout the evening. The 9 PM launch of Peace Lanterns will flank the city from this location along with J Street at the Southwest end.
Pie Baking Contest- South Shores Tavern, The Cottage & La Bonne Bouche: Bring your home baked pies to the Southshores Tavern, 502 Lucerne Avenue, at 4 PM for the Fourth
Annual Pie Baking contest. The chefs at La Bonne Bouche, the Cottage and South Shores will be judging this contest along with Mayor Pam Triola. Judging will take place at 5PM. Prize baskets will be awarded for the top three pies. Both Southshores and La Bonne Bouche have been recognized by local press as top eateries in the county. Stay for the food and the live music at all three venues.

Pig Kissing Booth- Paws on the Avenue: The iconic Pet Shop, Paws on the Avenue welcome back the real Miss Piggy. On Friday evening you get a chance to smooch with her and have your picture taken at the same time

Watermelon Eating Contest- Cultural Plaza- Eat your heart out and win both a belly ache and a gift basket. Live bands throughout the evening will end with Tou Rouj, and outstanding Haitian Drumming Group.

Free Events to Help Residents without Health Insurance
West Palm Beach, FL (May 23, 2013) – On Friday, June 14, from 2pm-5pm, and Saturday, June 15, from 9am to 1pm, Project Access is hosting another Project Reach Out, an event open to the public to help people find out if they qualify for a health insurance program. People who attend Project Reach Out will find out if they are eligible for health care through Medicaid, Florida Kidcare, Health Care District of Palm Beach County programs including Vita Health and Coordinated Care Options 1 and 2, or Project Access.
The events are free and people do not need to pre-register, but patients must live in Palm Beach County. Project Access and Project Reach Out are programs of Palm Beach County Medical Society Services.
The events will be held at 3540 Forest Hill Blvd., Suite 101, West Palm Beach, FL 33406.
Attendees must bring proof of residency in Palm Beach County including one of the following: driver’s license; picture ID with local address; utility bill with your name on it; passport; or Social Security card (optional).
Attendees must bring proof of income including one of the following: 2012 Tax Return filed; detailed bank statements (3 most recent ones); last 8 weeks of paystubs; or unemployment benefits; or detailed letter from financial supporter (signed by them with their contact information).

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., — Young Singers of the Palm Beaches is presenting its second annual Broadway Artists Studio from July 15 to August 3, 2013 and this year’s show stopping line-up of special guest artists is getting a standing ovation from area parents and their teens, ages 12-20. Auditions for the three-week musical theater intensive are being held on June 1, 2013 at the KravisCenter of the Performing Arts.
Last year’s inaugural Broadway Artists Studio was a sell-out success and the 2013 limited number of 100 spots is filling up quickly. The summer intensive offers a select group of area kids a bite of the big apple with classes by professional faculty direct from Broadway, with combined experience of more than 50 shows. All levels of voice, acting and dance will be offered.
Created by venerable Broadway performers Jason Gillman, Jackie Bayne Gillman and Greg Graham, Broadway Artists Studio classes will be taught by the artistic directors along with guest faculty teaching this year, including Kris Koop and Cara Kjellman (please see below or visit http://www.broadwayartistsstudio.com/faculty/ for all faculty bios). Headlining master classes are special guest artists including Joshua Bergasse and Emily Skinner and New York casting director, Justin Huff.
Joshua Bergasse is the 2012 Emmy award-winning choreographer for NBC’s musical drama “SMASH,” now in its second season, in which he also stars as “Josh.” Bergasse also recently choreographed for Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance.” He has performed on Broadway and throughout the country in “Movin’ Out,” “Hairspray,” “The Life” and “West Side Story.”
Emily Skinner was nominated for a Tony Award and received a Drama League Award as “Daisy Hilton” in the Broadway show, “Side Show.” She recently starred as “Mrs. Wilkinson” in the original Broadway company of “Billy Elliot” and has also starred on Broadway in the original companies of “The Full Monty,” “Jekyll & Hyde,” James Joyce’s “The Dead,” and the revival of “Dinner at Eight.”
Justin Huff is a casting director at Telsey & Company and has cast the Broadway and national touring productions of “Newsies,” “Kinky Boots,” “Jekyll & Hyde,” “The Addams Family,” “Spider-man Turn Off The Dark,”” The Gershwin’s’ Porgy & Bess,” “Bonnie & Clyde,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Rock of Ages,” “Legally Blonde” and “High School Musical,” among many others.
“We have students who often ask us, ‘How did you do it? How did you get to Broadway?’” said Jason Gillman. “The answer is simple: training, training, and more training. Even more important is the quality of the training. There is simply no replacement. We have found that the focus is often misplaced on “product over process.” In other words, more emphasis is being placed on the final product, which is the show, as opposed to the process, which is the development of technique through classroom study. We felt the need to share our personal knowledge and experience as Broadway professionals and to pass along the importance of training as the most essential element to a successful career as a working actor through a special Broadway Artists Studio experience.”
The artistic directors, staff and guest artists of Broadway Artists Studio expect a high level of professionalism from every student regardless of age, experience and/or ability. This means that students are expected to arrive prepared, checked in and ready to begin class each morning at 9am sharp. Students are responsible for their own individual sheet music, scenes, dance apparel and any other studio-related materials. Each student must be committed to work as a team, regardless of the size of an individual’s role. Humility, respect, hard work, and a willingness to learn will be expected and valued. Broadway Artists Studio requires a supportive, non-judgmental environment where creative risks can be taken and art developed.
“We have developed a program for talented students who are highly motivated to improve their technique and who are aspiring to a career in the performing arts,” said Jackie Bayne Gillman. “Broadway Artists Studio exposes students to current high level industry professionals who share their knowledge and expertise acquired along their own path to Broadway. We want to instill a sense of professionalism and the work ethic needed to become a professional in the very demanding, fast-paced, and extremely competitive world of show business. Our goal is to foster the major talent in this area by arming our students with technique, self-confidence, creativity, the ability to improvise and work as an ensemble. Most of all, we want to stress ‘process over product’ to our students which is essential to becoming future Broadway professionals.”
For the second year, Broadway Artists Studio is produced by Young Singers of the Palm Beaches (YSPB) with special thanks to the KravisCenter for the Performing Arts. YSPB just celebrated its 10th anniversary as Palm Beach County’s youth choir — an award-winning, world-class troupe of 350 talented singers who have not only performed at concerts all over Palm Beach County, but also at Lincoln Center in New York City, with Native Americans in New Mexico, and at international music festivals in Salzburg and Vienna. A multi-racial, multi-cultural arts education organization based centrally in Palm Beach County, its enrollment is comprised of singers in grades 3-12 from all parts of the county’s diverse racial, ethnic, geographic, and socio-economic communities.
