Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery celebrates the 4th of July Weekend with an appropriate, “One if by Land, Two if by Sea” exhibition.  The event takes place on Friday, July 5 from 6-9PM.  The evening ends with the lighting of Peace Lanterns that will soar 200 feet into the sky.  The holiday event includes a Surf and Turf sampling of food that will accompany the art made from foraged treasures of the earth and the sea.  This gallery party is free to the public.
 
Lake Worth Artist Kathleen Kirschner joins with gallery artists Julie Sylvester and Valerie Brotherton in this special presentation of art made from the cast off debris left in our forests and on our seashores.  Scavenging the beaches, the seabeds, the back alleys and wooded areas of Palm Beach County, these collectors amass a wide variety of materials that are then turned into unusual works of art.  Kathleen Kirschner, after visiting local bird watching preserves found herself sifting through her collection of driftwood and palm fronds to create a larger than life-size Great Blue Heron.  This joins her swan and a huge assortment of wall hangings and sculptures that grace the CGMS Gallery.  Both Julie Sylvester and Valerie Brotherton gather every shell they use.  They take, however, very different approaches to incorporating them into art.  Julie creates sailing ships, dragons, flowers, butterflies and jewelry from her finds.  Valerie uses her shells, sea vegetation and corals to make abstract sculptures and museum like specimen collections under glass. 
 
Continuing the summer food fest at the gallery and in keeping  with the surf and turf theme, 4th of July holiday foods will overflow many serving vessels made by gallery artists. Look for shrimp and crab treats along with your pigs in a blanket and surprise treats from the earth.  Round that out with sips of beverages, wine and beer and you have a real holiday feast.
 
Clay§Glass§Metal§Stone Cooperative Gallery is sponsored by the Flamingo Clay Studio, a non-profit arts organization whose mission is to provide affordable studio and gallery space for three-dimensional artists.  The gallery is located at 15 South J Street in downtown Lake Worth. Hours are Sunday thru Tuesday, 10AM-5PM. (Lake Worth, FL – June 19, 2013)  John A, Marshall, Board Chair of the Arthur R. Marshall Foundation for the Everglades & Florida Environmental Institute, which champions the restoration and preservation of the greater ecosystem of Florida’s historic River of Grass, is announcing that the nonprofit organization will be co-hosting a SEA LEVEL RISE SYMPOSIUM. This critical and timely event will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, July 26, at Oxbridge Academy in West Palm Beach.

“It is particularly important to outline Sea Level Rise challenges to current science and engineering graduates because they are the ones who will inherit consequences of what previous generations left in their wake. Certainly, more consideration of the consequences of sea level rise is needed in long-range planning by local, county, state and federal governments, including educating the public about the probability of a markedly different coastal landscape in the years ahead. The SEA LEVEL RISE SYMPOSIUM will address these issues,” said Mr. Marshall, who also serves as spokesperson for the Florida Environmental Institute.

“That is why the Marshall Foundation and our Summer Interns are co-hosting this Symposium along with Oxbridge Academy of the Palm Beaches and the League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County,” said Mr. Marshall. “Our goal is bring more awareness to sea level rise and adaptations, such as Everglades Restoration, that can help mitigate these effects.”

Among the 45 experts speakers who will participate in a series of presentations, breakout sessions and workshops will be:

“In addition the Marshall Foundation’s summer interns will present their research on previous ecosystem service valuations regarding Everglades restoration as a mitigating factor to the detrimental effects created by the rising sea level, said Mr. Marshall.  “Their fresh views and innovative solutions will add an exciting dimension to the diverse ideas expressed by the symposium experts.”

The SEA LEVEL RISE SYMPOSIUM is open to the public, community leaders, policy makers, government officials and employees, scientists and teachers. The cost to attend is only $30 per person and reservations can be made online at www.artmarshall.org/registration.

Tequila Cowboy: Bringing the Best of Music City to CityPlace

His one-of-a-kind mixed media art pieces inside Tequila Cowboy include colorful 8 foot guitars, massive red wrought iron lips, custom hanging lights, and hand-worked railing to surround the outdoor patio. Tequila Cowboy’s enormous walls are hand-painted by Tim Parker with custom Americana-themed murals, including classic sign depictions, and a tremendous American flag that serves as a backdrop behind the stage for live music performances. Finally, Chuck Miles, welder by trade, has created an eye catching South-Western style sculpture of a potted cactus with a spigot ceremonially dispensing North America’s first native spirit.

TEQUILA COWBOY also entertains as a music venue with national country music artist performances, followed by a DJ-fueled late night dance party. There’s a beautiful intimate dining area, huge dance floor, realistic mechanical bull, state-of-the-art sound system, over 20 HD televisions, private rooms for parties or corporate events, and WannaB’s Karaoke Bar. Rotary Club of Wellington holds its 2012-2013 Awards Banquet and 2013-2014 Board of Directors Installation Ceremony

 

The Rotary Club of Wellington held its 2012-2013 Awards Banquet and 2013-2014 Board of Directors Installation Ceremony on Saturday June 22, 2013 at The Wanderers Club.  Most members of the club and many members of the local community attended.

Karen Hardin, President of the Club, started off the program with the Pledge of Allegiance, Invocation, and the World Wide Peace Toast.  David Unversaw, Past President of the Club, gave a “year in review” of the club’s activities during the 2012-2013 year.  Dave presented many members of the club recognition awards for their outstanding commitment to the club’s activities during the year.  Carol O’Neill received the “Rotarian of the Year Award” for her outstanding commitment to the club and her “service above self” attitude.

Dr. Carmine Priore presented the Frank T. Gladney award which is given to the local Wellington citizen who best exemplifies unselfish dedication through devotion of time, energy and numerous contributions to the betterment of our community.  The recipient of this year’s award is Michael Gauger.

Finally, Dr. Priore swore-in the new Board of Directors for the 2013-2014 year for the club.  Additionally, Tom Neumann was sworn in as “President-Elect” and Larry Kemp was sworn in as the President of the Rotary Club of Wellington 2013-2014. The club is looking forward to a very successful year.

Miami Book Fair International 30th Anniversary

MIAMI, June 14, 2013 – The nation’s finest and largest literary gathering, Miami Book Fair International, presented by The Center for Literature and Theatre @ Miami Dade College (MDC), turns 30 this year! The beloved festival will take place November 17 – 24, 2013, atMiami Dade MDC’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.

In commemoration of the 500 years since Ponce de Leon landed in Florida, this year the Fair will celebrate the culture and literature of Spain. Some of the country’s most illustrious writers and artists will present their works at the Fair this year.

In addition, the artist of the official Book Fair poster is one of Spain’s most important illustrators and comics artists and winner of the 2007 Premio Nacional de Comic, Francisco Capdevila, better known as “Max.” The official poster, along with the Generation Genius Days poster by popular comics and graphic novels creator Paul Pope, will be unveiled September 20 at the College’s Historic Freedom Tower as part of a DWNTWN Arts Days celebration that will bring together all of the other MDCulture’s departments – Miami International Film Festival, MDC LiveArts, Galleries and Museum of Art + Design and Teatro Prometeo.

The Miami Book Fair, one of Miami’s flagship cultural events, will treat book lovers to eight days of cultural and educational activities, including the beloved Evenings With… series, the IberoAmerican Authors program, literacy and learning activities for children and teens during Generation Genius Days, and The Kitchen, demos and panels for food enthusiasts in partnership with the college’s Miami Culinary Institute. Fairgoers will also enjoy more than 200 exhibitors from around the country selling books in a festive atmosphere and hundreds of author reading and discussing new books during the weekend Street Fair.

To celebrate the 30th, Fair organizers have launched a campaign that celebrates Miami’s love and involvement with their hometown jewel. NEW PERMANENT EXHIBITS ADD TO APPEAL OF SOUTH FLORIDA SCIENCE CENTER’S SUMMER SCIENCE CAMP

(SFSCA) Summer Science Camp will entertain and educate young scientists this summer.  The Science Center is offering nine, one-week sessions now through August 16 for children ages 4 to 12 years old.

Summer Science Camp will feature a different theme of hands-on science exploration each week. During the camp, children can become an astronaut, paleontologist or oceanographer, as well as make potions and crystals, whip up scientific culinary creations, use engineering skills to build a roller coaster and much more! The days will be filled with fun learning, exciting labs, crafts and outside activities led by Science Center expert educators. 

“We’ve done everything possible to ensure an educational, fun and safe experience for all our campers,” said Lew Crampton, CEO of the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. “Not only will this year be filled with exciting new themes, but campers will benefit from the newly expanded and renovated space. The Science Center just completed a $5 million renovation to the former, and well-loved, South Florida Science Museum, which will enhance Science Camp for years to come.  Campers will be able to have fun and gain confidence in science with an opportunity to interact with our new permanent exhibits, like Science on a Sphere – a six-foot interactive globe with the ability to tell real time and historical planetary data or our much larger aquarium, which includes a pop-up tank for a 360 degree view of the ocean.  With our new mission ‘to open every mind to science,’ we look forward to camp as another opportunity to engage young Einsteins.  We are confident that this Summer Science Camp will be our best yet.”

The Summer Science Camp is held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with extended hours of structured activities available from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekly.  Themes include Out of this World; Build It, Launch It, Thrill It; Potions 101; H2Ocean; Food Frenzy; T-Rex Trek; Superhero Science; Blast Off and Science Stew.  Children can pick their favorite week or sign up for the whole summer.

Founded in 1961, the new South Florida Science Center and Aquarium features fun and educational programming for all ages. In addition to new features, the Science Center has retained some of its most loved hands-on exhibits — a digital planetarium, observatory, in-house Subway restaurant and more.

‘Science Nights’ (formerly ‘Nights at the Museum’) –Under the Sea Night

In celebration of the newly renovated and expanded South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, formerly known as the South Florida Science Museum, the first ‘Science Nights’ theme will be amazingly aquatic.

Guests will dive down deep and back in time as the Science Center’s newest traveling exhibit, Savage Ancient Seas, serves as the back drop for the evening event.  Parents and children with have the opportunity to explore marine science with a wave of ocean activities including demonstrations, labs, crafts and more!  The night will include:

  • Squid Dissection Lab
  • Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream Lab
  • Fish Tail Windsock Craft
  • Shark Tooth Necklace Making
  • Professor Clark the Science Shark
  • Touch Tank Pettings

On the last Friday of every month, the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium hosts a themed ‘Science Nights’ (formerly known as ‘Nights at the Museum’)– a family friendly opportunity to enjoy extended hours of the Science Center’s typical offerings as well as a chance to view the night sky through the Science Center’s observatory.  Once monthly, weather permitting, the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium opens its observatory dome, which rotates to allow for the best views. Guests will be treated to craters, comets and galaxies visible by the telescope. 

Monthly ‘Science Nights’ events run from 6pm – 10pm and every month there is a different theme.  Activities often include arts and crafts, animal dissections and dry ice experiments.
