Party for the Planet this Weekend at the Palm Beach Zoo

APRIL 18, 2013, WEST PALM BEACH, Florida – The Palm Beach Zoo along with more than 120 of the top zoos and aquariums across North America are throwing the 7th Annual Party for the Planet™ – the largest combined Earth Day celebration in North America this weekend (April 20 & 21). 

“Every year, AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums welcome more than 180 million visitors who have an interest in connecting with wildlife, learning about nature, and becoming involved in protecting the future of our Earth,” said AZA President & CEO Jim Maddy.  “By participating in the Party for the Planet™ at your local zoo or aquarium, you are making a difference by helping to support conservation locally and worldwide.”

Party for the Planet will take place on Saturday and Sunday, April 20 & 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.  Activities will include performances by the Pied Piper of Percussion: Steve Gryb in the FountainPlaza, wildlife shows, keeper talks and roving animal encounters, recycled crafts in the Florida Pioneer House, and children’s games focusing on the importance of recycling and environmental protection. 

Saturday will also feature the rededication of the Zoo’s ButterflyGarden.  The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and will celebrate the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs naming the Zoo’s butterfly garden an official butterfly sanctuary. The West Palm Beach Garden Club worked tirelessly to revamp and replant the area for the enjoyment of Zoo guests and of course, the butterflies.

In partnership with Waste Management of Florida, Inc. and Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County, the Zoo will collect e-waste for proper disposal.  When guests drop off an e-waste item this Saturday or Sunday in the WM Bagster located in the Zoo’s main parking lot, they will receive a $2.00 discount on their day’s admission. Items such as cell phones, electronic personal organizers, game consoles, printers, scanners, monitors, computers, answering machines, televisions, radios, etc. are eligible for the discount.

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce recently had a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for TSG Realty located at 12230 Forest Hill Boulevard, Suite 157, Wellington, Florida.   The office is headed by Ivan Velasquez who has many years experience in real estate and in marketing which helps him move properties quickly.  In addition, if you are an investor seeking a realtor who truly understands how to make money in today’s real estate market, you should give Ivan a call.

Ivan Velasquez was born and raised in Bogota, Columbia.  He earned at B.A. in Marketing and Advertising from Politécnico Grancolumbiano in Bogota.  After he graduated, he worked as an account manager with the largest travel agency in South America managing sales, marketing and  public relations.  Two years later he began work at the Radisson handling sales and big groups that came to their convention center.  He briefly owned and operated his own advertising agency with a friend in Bogota but discontinued the business in 2000 in order to move to Miami.

Once in Miami, Ivan began working with his father who owned Home Healthcare Agency which was based in Miami.  He was in charge of all the company’s marketing.  He also attended FloridaInternationalUniversity at that time to study international business.

In 2003, Ivan became a mortgage broker with a small company and in 2005 he opened his own mortgage business.  As the real estate market started dramatically changing, Ivan activated his real estate sales license in 2009 and he started working with Keyes Realty.  In 2011, he began working with TSG Realty. In 2012, Ivan opened the doors at the Wellington location.

In describing the business, Ivan said that TSG Realty is one of several affiliates of The Solution Group which is based in Miami and was established in 2008.  The website reads as follow: “The Solution Group (“TSG”) is the premier wholesaler of distressed real estate in South Florida.”  It also states that it has “developed and successfully implemented a Distressed Assets Program to maximize return on investment in the local South Florida Market after the real estate boom.”

Ivan said that The Solution Group has investors who are primarily from Latin America and Spain and his company manages their real estate investments.  The Solution Group found much success in Miami so they expanded into Broward and Palm BeachCounties.  Ivan was contacted when the company was expanding to Palm BeachCounty and soon after he became the first person to represent the company in this area. 

When describing himself, Ivan said, “I have a lot of experience.  I am very familiar with mortgages and very familiar with real estate.  I am active all of the time so I know what’s going on with the market. I’m not just buying distressed properties, I’m also putting them back on the market for rent.  I also average five to six closings every month.  And I am  bilingual so I am here for the Latin Community too.”

Boston Marathon Unity Run at Fit2Run in Wellington

Fit2Run of Wellington is dedicating its weekly run to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. We ask that runners dress in white to show unity. Wear a white shirt, grab a friend, and let’s show our support for those in Boston and for all runners everywhere. We will keep running!

Run united with members from Fit2Run to show your solidarity as a member of one of the strongest local communities–the running community–to honor those recently lost and harmed at the 177th running of the Boston Marathon.

Students Begin Long, Prosperous Journey

wellington, FL, April 13, 2013: Four students from Genbu-Kai Karate recently tested and advanced to their first 10th kyu (level) ranking. One student trains at the main school and the other three are students at the Royal Palm Beach high school adult education program.

Their journey, if they choose to continue, will take a minimum of at least 4 years, before being potentially invited to test for their first black belt level. Most traditional Martial Art Dojo (schools) start ranking at either 10th, or 9th kyu and progress through 1st kyu. Time between ranks slows down as the student advances. This is to make sure the students not only retain and comprehend the physical requirements of their training, but also the mental aspects, including improvement in maturity levels.

Today, martial arts schools offer a variety of color belts to denote different rankings. Typically, white, yellow and orange belts denote beginner students; purple and green belts denote intermediates; and blue, brown and red denote advanced students. Usually, stripes are added either within the belt itself, or as tips on the end of the belts for additional kyu ranking. In our schools, red belts are reserved for our junior black belts (7-12). Being these students typically do not achieve the required maturity levels, as required for our adult students.
Genbu-Kai Karate not only emphasizes self defense, but also incorporates methods in preventing bullying either at school or other social encounters. Most importantly, Genbu-Kai Karate teaches valuable life skills which students learn to incorporate in their school, family and social lives respectfully. Ursula Fernandez Paintings on Display at Whole Foods

 
Ursula Fernandez’s oil paintings are on display at Whole Foods in Wellington. A public reception will be held in her honor on April 26th. The Rickie Report senses that this exhibit is timed perfectly for April’s Earth Day celebrations because many of Ursula’s subjects are endangered plants! Make a reservation and enjoy!

The Whole Foods Market on SR7 in Wellington has a large cafe, lined with windows which offer nice natural lighting. It’s a perfect setting to display art and Wellington Art Society is pleased to partner with Lauren Belinsky of Whole Foods to bring this show to the community. Whole Foods will provide music, hot and cold appetizers, and drinks. Ursula’s artwork will be displayed in the Cafe, which is on the left side of the market. Artists often bring limited editions and prints to sell the evening of their reception.  There is a $5 fee to attend, which is used for WAS Scholarships for local art students pursuing a higher degree in art.

Ursula was born in Havana, Cuba and began sketching at the age of 15.  Her neighbor, Felix de Cossio, a recognized portrait painter,  was a major influence on Ursula.  As she observed him at work, he taught her valuable tips and techniques.  She tells us, “This planted a deep seated love for painting”.

THE YWCA SPONSORS TAKING A “STAND AGAINST RACISM”Stand Against Racism Logo

On Friday, April 26, 2013, organizations throughout Palm Beach County will be joining the YWCA of Palm Beach County for the third year in taking a Stand Against Racism. Across the country, more than a quarter million individuals are expected to be participating in this national event started several years ago by the YWCA’s in Trenton and Princeton, New Jersey. Through a variety of activities, individuals will be committing themselves to a lifetime of promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all people in their community and in the world. This powerful, unified, effort helps to raise awareness that racism hurts everyone. Participants will range from pre-school-age children to educational and social services leaders. Racism affects everyone. Among the organizations participating in Palm Beach County thus far are: Academy for Nursing and Health Occupations, Adopt-a-Family, Alpha Kappa Alpha, The Benjamin School, City of West Palm Beach, Empire Beauty School, Families First of Palm Beach County, Palm Beach State College, St. Thomas University Human Rights Institute, Tabernacle Baptist Church, Urban League, and West Palm Beach Housing Authority. “We welcome any school, religious institution, civic organization, business or government agency to join us in this effort to denounce racism,” says Suzanne Turner, CEO of the YWCA.

Participating Stand Against Racism sites in Palm Beach County will be hosting their respective Stand Against Racism event at their own location which may be private or open to the public. “No matter what shape the ‘stand’ takes in each participating site, all activities will echo the theme that racism is unacceptable,” says Turner.

The YWCA’s in America and around the world have a rich history of advocating for racial justice. Throughout its history, the YWCA has been in the forefront of most major movements in the United States as a pioneer in race relations. “We intend to effect real change in the lives of our family, friends and co-workers through a process that identifies and eradicates the barriers that divide us and that perpetuate racism and other forms of oppression. As individuals learn what has kept us apart, they will develop new ways of working cooperatively by creating new models of shared resources and perspectives,” expressed Turner.

After four wonderful years on Lake Avenue in Downtown Lake Worth, Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery has moved to 15 South J Street, Lake Worth. They will be celebrating this move with thirty-two local artists; most mainstays of the gallery. Joining them are six new artists with museum quality works. The gallery celebrates the move with a Grand Opening on Friday, May 3rd from 6-9PM.

Moving from a long, narrow, dark space into a beautiful, new, articulated and well lit gallery, the artists feel like they have emerged from a cocoon, unfurling their butterfly wings. In this space everything looks new. Traditionally the gallery celebrates its birthdays by releasing 100 butterflies. This year the butterflies are scarce and endangered. This year there will be 100 beautifully crafted butterflies for the first 100 visitors to the gallery. In addition, lanterns of peace and good fortune will be launched into the night sky.

Among the gallery’s new artists are Emilio Aponte-Sierra, Steve Brouse and Barbara Schwartz. Each brings a distinctive body of work. Emilio, a transplant from Miami, is a new resident of Palm Beach. His intricate paper sculptures were featured in Designer’s Week in Miami and graced many of the local and national fashion magazines. Encased in Lucite, they are an imposing presence throughout the gallery. Steve Brouse’ works are strong and colorful contrasts of bold images painted onto furniture, fronds, cars and tapestries. Originally a 3-D artist who graduated to paintings and murals, he is returning to his roots. Barbara Schwartz is a specialist in porcelain works finished with her own exotic glazes and lusters. Her wonderfully formed constructions look like painstaking carvings. Her decorative plates are works of image and narrative taking weeks to complete.

Clay,Glass,Metal,Stone Cooperative Gallery is sponsored by the Flamingo Clay Studio, a non-profit arts organization whose mission is to provide affordable studio and gallery space for three-dimensional artists. The gallery is located at 15 South J. Street in downtown Lake Worth. Hours are Sunday thru Tuesday, 9AM-1PM. Wednesday thru Saturday, 9AM-9PM. Among the issues to be discussed, but not limited to, are the psychology of a scam, how to immediately spot fraudulent behavior, the all to familiar common phone, email and bank scams, how to fight identity theft, medicare fraud, food stamp fraud and what are the available resources to keep you safe.

Sheriff Ric Bradshaw will open the program and an officer assigned to the PBSO Financial Crimes Unit will be on hand to answer your questions.
