October, 2012 – Dr. Tomer Haik, Beautiful Smiles Every Time

AW SPOTLIGHT

Dr. Haik, The Kids Teeth Doctor

Beautiful Smiles Every Time

See Dr. Haik in this month’s video “Letter from the Editor” too!

By Krista Martinelli

A lot of wonderful things have been said about Dr. Tomer Haik, the “Kids Teeth Doctor,” in Wellington. However, the best and most common comment is, “My kids look forward to coming to the dentist now.” Dr. Haik shared a few of the many “thank you” letters from kids and parents with us. He is well-loved in the community and, as my kids have experienced, he has a way of making kids laugh and making them comfortable instead of nervous.

Here’s one recent comment from — Phoenix C., a parent. “I really LOVE coming to Dr Haik’s office. The staff is always warm…and Dr Haik is a gem. He seriously has the absolute greatest relationship with the children. I am always amazed at how he stays so sweet and calm with the children. I will never look for another pediatric dentist. And I will always recommend him to my friends. Fantastic. A+…” (September, 2012)

Even in just the past four years, dentistry has changed and improved in many ways. Many patients are pleased with the relatively-new aesthetic stainless steel crowns (which have a white plastic coating on the outside). In just the past six months, they have introduced pre-formed porcelain crowns, which also look great and are better for the gums.

“It’s a constant learning process,” says Dr. Haik. “There is no textbook on how each child will react. It’s natural for a child to feel fearful or vulnerable. That’s why we have become so good with singing, dancing and jokes,” he laughs. He is both a talented dentist and terrific with his rapport with kids of all ages.

As the father of three young kids (who are 7, 5 and 1), Dr. Haik relates to them well. “It helps me tremendously, for example, knowing that my daughter is the ‘door helper’ this week. And I can ask my patients what their job is in the classroom.  Or if my son is having spelling tests, I know that my patients might be having spelling tests too.” He asks them about their accomplishments at school and home, and the kids react with a sense of pride and eagerness.  They might ask a Kindergarten child if she knows the alphabet, and she is invariably happy to prove that she knows it. “It’s amazing how they lighten up, going from scared to proud.”

How long should someone spend brushing their teeth?

Cute poster in Dr. Haik's office - "Kids will spend 8 minutes decorating their little brothers. How about two minutes to brush their teeth?"
Cute poster in Dr. Haik’s office – “Kids will spend 8 minutes decorating their little brothers. How about two minutes to brush their teeth?”

It’s about two minutes, according to Dr. Haik. “I tell mothers they have my utmost permission to nag, nag, nag!” he says. “I tell kids, ‘Don’t rush when you brush.’” Flossing, by the way, is not just for grown-ups, Dr. Haik reminds parents. As soon as the teeth become tight against each other, it’s time to floss too.

Another important tip for parents is not to let their kids go to bed with milk or juice. Brushing before bedtime is the best way to go and the only acceptable drink after that is water. Snacking between meals can be very harmful to teeth too, explains Dr. Haik.  Fruits and vegetables are better snacks for your teeth and all-around than other snack options. If possible, he warns parents to avoid gummies, which stick on the teeth and tend to do damage.  If the kids have gummy vitamins, it’s important to brush well afterwards.

Dr. Haik’s office is very inviting to children with a jungle theme and
a Tiki receptionist area. There are fun movies to be watched, while the kids are lying back in the dentist chairs. They have even thought of the siblings, providing a video game area for those kids who are waiting for a brother or sister to finish.  “The number one thing is our friendly staff though,” says Dr. Haik. He makes sure to hire staff members who are very good with working with children.

At the Kids Teeth Doctor, the staff members respect each other and truly enjoy the kids, who keep them laughing. “Remember the Bill Cosby show, ‘Kids Say the Darndest Things?’” says Dr. Haik. “Well, if he were to do that show in our office, he would have a LOT of material!”

Dr. Haik is also enjoying being a father. He and his wife have Joshua (7), Naomi (5) and Nava (who is one and a half).  He finds the two worlds, home and work, lots of fun.  He is always collecting good comic material, thanks to the things that happen at home and at work. He enjoys magic, Karaoke and playing with Legos with his kids.

He also has the latest and greatest in technology when it comes to appointment reminders. When a patient has an appointment, the parent gets emails, text messages and phone calls, according to their preferences. They also get an automatic survey sent after each appointment, so Dr. Haik and his staff can always be aware of how they are doing. Check out his website and Facebook page. He holds occasional contests on his “Kids Teeth Doctor” Facebook page, including the next one – which will be a Halloween costume photo contest. He also is happy to offer a wonderful, post-Halloween event for the community the day after Halloween each year, an opportunity for families to get rid of their extra Halloween candy.

The Annual “Cash For Candy” Event…Coming on Thurs., November 1st!

On the first day after Halloween (and this year it will benew-pumpkin Thursday, November 1st), Dr. Haik’s office presents a Cash for Candy event from 5:30pm to 8:00pm in his office.

“We collected 550 pounds of candy last year from kids,” says Dr. Haik. The concept is that kids give up some of their candy, preventing a few cavities. Dr. Haik’s office gives $1 per pound of candy, per child – and if the school is registered ahead of time, another $1 per pound to the child’s school. Save time by filling out a form ahead of time, which can be printed out from “The Kids Teeth Doctor” website. The event is open to the public. They’ve sent the candy to our troops overseas for the past three years.  This year they have a request from an organization who helps kids in orphanages for the candy. Overall, it’s a great event and a great way to avoid cavities while raising a little money – for your school and yourself!

In summary, if you’re looking for a new dentist for your children, stop by Dr. Haik’s office. He is friendly, knowledgeable and gentle. “We are just trying to keep the young smiles in our community healthy,” says Dr. Haik.

Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful Announces Locations for the
International Coastal Cleanup 2012

Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc. (KPBCB) welcomes help from volunteers for the International Coastal Cleanup scheduled for Saturday, September 15 with additional dates in September and October  in Palm Beach County.  The cleanup is sponsored by The Ocean Conservancy worldwide and is coordinated locally by KPBCB.

As part of this effort across the globe, individuals take part in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) to remove trash and debris from the world’s beaches and waterways, identify the sources of that debris, and change the behaviors that allow it to reach the ocean in the first place.

During this signature event each September, hundreds of thousands of volunteers from countries all over the world spend a day picking up everything from cigarette butts and food wrappers to lost fishing nets and major appliances. Because trash travels to the ocean by way of storm drains and waterways, they don’t just work along ocean beaches; these dedicated volunteers navigate through mud and sand along lakes, canals, and rivers, often working far inland on roadways and neighborhood streets.

Many walk, while others set out on boats. Thousands more don scuba gear to seek trash below the water’s surface. People of all ages, from any walk of life, can participate. Friends, families, neighbors, club members, school classes—all kinds of people turn out on one day to work together in spirit across many time zones.

Working shoulder-to-shoulder, the volunteers in the Cleanup’s global network not only pick up trash, they record every item they find on standardized data cards. KPBCB compiles the data locally and the Ocean Conservancy compiles and analyzes the data worldwide each year, and publishes the world’s only item-by-item, location-by-location snapshot of marine debris in an annual report. By understanding what is out there, we can work together on solutions.

Last year, during the 26th anniversary of the Cleanup, in Palm Beach County alone, over 3,300 volunteers picked up over 20,588 lbs of trash from Palm Beach County beaches, lakes, and participating neighborhoods. From the information provided by volunteers, the source of most of the trash and debris comes from shoreline and recreational activities (55.43%) and smoking-related activities (35.27%).

This year in Palm Beach County, local volunteers will gather at multiple locations on September 15 with additional dates in September and October. Most cleanup events begin at 8:00 a.m. with some later start times. For a list of sites, dates, and times, please visit www.keepPBCbeautiful.org  or call (561) 686-6646.   Community Service Hours will be given. Volunteers should pre-register by contacting the volunteer coordinators listed for each site. Trash bags and other supplies will be provided and volunteers are encouraged to wear hats, sunscreen, sturdy shoes and bring water. Free ICC t-shirts will be given to volunteers while supplies last.

Wellington Encourages Residents to form Neighborhood Watch Programs

October is Crime Prevention month and Wellington is partnering with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office District 8 Wellington to promote Neighborhood Watch programs throughout the community. The Neighborhood Watch program was founded in 1972 by the National Sheriffs’ Association to help law enforcement officers reduce crime by utilizing the eyes and ears of the community.

“Neighborhood Watch is an excellent mechanism to prevent crime and raise safety awareness,” said Captain Jay Hart, District 8 Commander. “Not only are you discouraging criminals from preying on your community, it’s also an excellent opportunity to unite neighbors and improve everyone’s quality of life.”

For more information about beginning a Neighborhood Watch group in your area, please contact Wellington’s Safe Neighborhoods Office at (561) 791-4796.
