MLK Day Celebration Moves Forward for 2013

A full slate of activities will be held this year in Lake Worth in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. on January 19th through January 21st. The programs will develop the theme, Faithfully Moving Forward.

The highlight will be the 19th annual Candlelight March through downtown Lake Worth on Monday, January 21st. Included will be young and old; veterans of the civil rights movement as well as a multitude of church and school groups. Participants will gather at 5 PM at City Hall and parade down Lake Avenue to the MLK “Ball” Memorial. A brief commemorative program at the Memorial will recognize the progress that the City of Lake Worth has made over its 100 year history toward fulfillment of Dr. King’s Dream.

Following the March, a Fellowship Dinner is planned at First Baptist Church. The church is located at Second Ave. South and M Street, just a block south of the Memorial. Light entertainment is planned. The free dinner will provide an opportunity for warm fellowship across religious and racial lines in the spirit of Dr. King. Sponsoring religious and civic organizations will provide the food and beverages. Members of the general public are invited to help with the dinner preparations which will begin at First Baptist at 4 PM or to contribute a side dish or a dessert.

Earlier in the day, St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 10th Avenue South and E Street, will host an interfaith prayer breakfast from 7 – 9 AM. The program will feature prayer and music by local representatives of Lake Worth’s diverse faith traditions.

Then at 2 PM, the public will be treated to the thrilling musical and drama presentation, Ain’t I A Woman, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church (Lucerne Avenue and Palmway). Core Ensemble (cello, piano, percussion and actor) performs an original musical score drawn from the spirituals and blues of the Deep South and urban vitality of the Jazz Age, as accompaniment to the stage presentation of the lives of four renowned African-American women; Zora Neale Hurston, Soujourner Truth, Clementine Hunter and Fannie Lou Hamer. Admission is free.

On Saturday, January 19th at 4 PM, the Lake Worth Interfaith Network will host a silent prayer vigil downtown at the MLK Memorial. The vigil will provide an opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s philosophy of nonviolent social action on issues currently facing our city and our nation.

Dr. King’s Dream encompassed the hopes and dreams of all Americans. Members of every racial, religious and ethnic group in Palm Beach County are invited to join Lake Worth residents in their celebration of the diversity of our community. All events are free of charge to the public, sponsored by the City of Lake Worth, Kiwanis Club, Lake Worth Interfaith Network and the Lake Worth MLK Committee.

Clay Glass Metal Stone Cooperative Gallery Presents Yang/Yin and Everythin’ In Be-Twin

A Study in Opposites Friday, January 18, 2012   6-9 PM 605 Lake Avenue: Lake Worth FL

YANG/YIN and Everythin’ In Be-Twin explores the battle of opposites maryellendohrs_portraitand the intertwining of the sames, in art and in life.  This exhibit takes place at Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery, 605 Lake Avenue in downtown Lake Worth.  The exhibit opens on Friday, January 18h with a wine and cheese reception and closes on January 30th.  This event is free to the public and part of the exciting Evenings on the Avenue presented by the Lake Worth DCA and LULA.

Gallery artists MaryEllen Dohrs, Linda Manganaro and Betty Wilson, all veterans of the complexities of building an artist identity in a left brain/ right brain world, have each developed an identifiable brand, an art that when viewed is easy attributed to that individual.  Within their genre of style are the variations that twins and twines; the Yin and Yang.

MaryEllen Dohrs, well known nationally and among sports figures world wide for her kinetic portrayal of basketball players, sumo wrestlers and hockey players brings her skills to the creation of snails, turtles, frogs and pigs.  Her ability to anatomically nail any living species on the planet evokes commissions from those wanting sports figures to look like their children to those wanting an exact replica of a dog or a goat.  MaryEllen’s teaching abilities have a loyal following of students who have worked under her supervision for decades.

Betty Wilson, Palm Beach County’s chief booster of the arts and the artists creating them, has a thriving gallery, The Craft Gallery, on South Dixie Highway.  There she has hosted the Artists of Palm Beach County and the Ceramics League of the Palm Beaches.  Adults and children flock to her venue to learn how to work in both clay and glass.  As a member of the Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery, Betty is one of the best selling artists.  Her fused glass fish are collected by locals and tourists alike.  Images of her hundreds of smaller fish gathering in a school to chase one of the larger varieties could be a signature for this exhibit.

Linda Manganaro has created some of the iconic arts references of this show.  An arts and antique dealer, she juxtaposes all that is opposite into complete and harmonious relationships.  At first ones sees tension in the presentation, a presentation that then morphs into a thought provoking whole concept.  One sees references to a wide variety of influences in her works, but all combine to be a unique and highly sought after Linda Manganaro original. Her materials, a collage of three dimensional found pieces, are analyzed, conjected upon and then adopted by many visitors to the gallery. Each week Linda brings new visions and ideas to play. A flood of oppositional creations will wash through the gallery during this showing.

Clay§Glass§Metal§Stone Cooperative Gallery is sponsored by the Flamingo Clay Studio, a non-profit arts organization whose mission is to provide affordable studio and gallery space for three-dimensional artists.  The gallery is located at 605 Lake Avenue in downtown Lake Worth. Hours are Sunday thru Tuesday, 9AM-1PM. Wednesday thru Saturday, 9AM-9PM.   Gallery openings are the first and third Friday of each month from 6-9 PM with many special events in-between.  For information call Joyce Brown-215-205-9441 or JCLay6@aol.com.  Gallery phone: 561-588-8344.

February, 2013 – Nurturing Your Grandchildren’s Jewish Identity

0

How to Nurture Your Grandchildren’s Jewish Identity

When their Parents Don’t Share a Single Faith

The Grandparents Circle® Returns to the Greater Palm Beaches

It’s no secret that as we increasingly become a global community, intermarriage rates among Jews and other faith communities continue to rise. While more accepted than in past generations, it is still hard for grandparents who want to see family traditions continue.  For Jewish grandparents living in our community, the Commission for Jewish Education of the Palm Beaches (CJE) provides ideas and support that can lead to positive Jewish conversations and activities with their adult children, their spouses, and their grandchildren.

Jewish grandparents in the greater Palm Beaches can now gain the skills and techniques to nurture and, in some cases, establish their interfaith grandchild’s Jewish identity through The Grandparents Circle.

Created by the Jewish Outreach Institute (JOI) and implemented locally by the CJE, this free program includes a five-session course, a connection to family-friendly events and a national email discussion forum providing a supportive online community of peers.

“Regardless of how children in interfaith homes are being raised, each child is entitled to their legacy.  As Jewish grandparents, we have the privilege of passing down our heritage,” shares N. Deborah Stapler of Palm Beach Gardens, a Commission for Jewish Education (CJE) Board member and participant in CJE’s Grandparents Circle inaugural year.

Stapler invites all area Jewish grandparents whose children are in interfaith marriages to share her CJE’s Grandparents Circle experience by joining the five session program that will be held on five consecutive Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. beginning on February 12, 2013 at Wycliffe Country Club, 4650 Wycliffe Country Club Blvd., Wellington.

“It is enriching and inspiring for each participant in different ways. The group has every combination of stories about family situations, including interfaith, interracial and intercultural.” Stapler adds, “I came to Grandparents Circle with an open mind.  All of us share some level of disappointment that our children are not married to a Jewish spouse.  That connects us. It is especially important to give tools to those who have felt that their married children cannot be reached.

Rabbi Janie Grackin
Rabbi Janie Grackin

“My daughter is married to a man with an Italian Catholic heritage.  The children are being raised as Jews. They live in another community.  The knowledge gained in Grandparents Circle enables both local and long distance grandparents to share positive Jewish moments with their grandchildren.  Children love ‘snail mail.’ For my grandson’s promotion to Middle School, I planted a tree in Israel and he received a certificate with an illustration targeted to children.

Our facilitator, Rabbi Janie Grackin, emphasizes our relationship with our own children and the impact a grandparent can have on grandchildren.”

Rabbi Janie Grackin, Grandparents Circle instructor for CJE, is an international community educator, who uses the art of storytelling to inspire and educate.  She creates programs for intergenerational populations in synagogues and schools in the United States, Europe and Israel. Awarded the Solomon Schechter Gold Award for Family Education, she is a contributing author to “Mitzvah Stories: Seeds for Inspiration and Learning,” and recently led the Passover Seder, “Walking the Exodus,” at the American Embassy in Berlin, Germany.

Speaking passionately about Grandparents Circle and its impact on participants, Rabbi Grackin says, “The Grandparents Circle offers a fun, friendly and safe place to examine and expand your knowledge in creating the best relationships with your interfaith children and grandchildren. With warmth, humor and honesty, we explore ways for you to discover and share your Jewish heritage, and we give you new ideas and tools to make it easy!”

Launched with an initial grant from The Fine Foundation and additional support from N. Deborah and Michael Stapler, the CJE’s Grandparents Circle program continues this year for the Greater Palm Beaches thanks to a generous gift from Dundi and Lyon Sachs of Palm Beach.

For more information or to register for CJE’s Grandparents Circle, contact Erika Simon, CJE Jewish Family Life associate at e.simon@cjepb.org or at 561.209.2607 or visit the CJE website at www.cjepb.org.
