The new “burn and learn” concept!

Every Saturday from 9:30am-10:30am starting on January 5, 2013

WHAT

Attention all moms… Stick to those New Year’s resolutions by exerscienceattending a weekly Saturday Zumba class at the South Florida Science Museum.  The added benefit is that while you burn off those holiday cookies, your young scientist can enjoy a fun and interactive science program. This new “burn and learn” concept is sure to satisfy all parties involved.  Additional perks include admission to the Museum, top notch science instruction, a Health Science nutritional guide and a Subway coupon toward “eating fresh.”

“This isn’t a typical set-up where mom goes to the gym and her child is babysat with video games or a movie,” said Kate Arrizza, Chief Operating Officer for the SFSM.  “Parents can rest assured they are doing something good for themselves and their child – the perfect multi-tasking parenting solution!  While mom (or dad) is getting fit, their child will be performing science labs, learning about new constellations in the planetarium, or getting up close and personal with the sea animals in our touch tank – and with kids their own age. After class, kids can take mom or dad on a tour of the museum to explore more about what they just experienced, and even stay for lunch at the Museum’s Subway shop. We think it will make for a great Saturday morning tradition where everyone wins!”

June C. Baker Foundation for “Kids with Cancer” Recognizes Pediatric Oncology Support Team

The June C. Baker Foundation for “Kids with Cancer” recentlypost presented the Pediatric Oncology Support Team (POST) of West Palm Beach with a plaque of recognition for all they do to assist families of children with cancer.

Having a child diagnosed with cancer can be devastating for the entire family; POST steps in with its highly-qualified team of professionals to help with counseling, case management, care coordination, school advocacy and much more.

The June C. Baker Foundation, established by George “Archie” Baker in memory of his beloved wife June, whose wish was to help “kids with cancer,” has provided financial support to POST since the Foundation’s inception in 2004.  Funds are used primarily for prescription drug payments, various co-payments, and costs of travel to out-of-area clinics and hospitals, specifically for gasoline cards.  The Foundation also underwrites costs of POST’s respite program that provides funds for families who are unable to afford to celebrate a child’s birthday or other special event in a restaurant or for other needs such as school supplies, uniforms or clothing.

The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity staffed by volunteers and governed by a board of directors who volunteer their services.  All operating expenses of the Foundation are paid by family members to insure that 100% of donations and proceeds from fund-raising activities is disbursed to “kids with cancer” in Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie Counties.

For more information on the June C. Baker Foundation or POST, please visit their websites, www.jcbfund.com and www.postfl.org.

Through film and images, Steven Caras, a contemporary of Lopez at NYCB, will set the stage prior to his intimate and engaging conversation with her, reflecting on the artist’s colorful childhood, her rapid rise to star dancer, and her eclectic post-performance careers, all of which contribute to making this exciting chapter in her life a most natural progression.
