Philadelphia:  Beyond the Liberty Bell

By Terri Marshall, Photos by Gregory Holder

Spending a weekend in the “City of Brotherly Love” doesn’t have to be all about the Liberty Bell and Philly Cheese Steaks.  Philadelphia offers up unique artwork, local watering holes and even a bit of Southern inspired cuisine.

Philadelphia is home to the world’s largest outdoor art gallery which includes over 3,000 murals and works of public art.  The Mural Arts Program began in 1984 with an effort to eradicate the graffiti crisis plaguing the city.  Then Mayor Wilson Goode hired muralist Jane Golden to reach out to graffiti writers and to redirect their energies from destructive graffiti writing to constructive mural painting.  With the refined artistic skills developed through mural painting, the young men and women were empowered to take an active role in the beautification of their own neighborhoods. The transformation was magical – bringing color, beauty and life to an old industrial city.

The Mural Arts Program’s award-winning, free art education programsphilly-007 annually serve nearly 2,000 youth at sites throughout the city and at-risk teens through the education outreach programs. The Program also serves adult offenders in local prisons and rehabilitation centers, using the restorative power of art to break the cycle of crime and violence.  Several guided tours are offered including an Ale Adventure Walk, a Sculpture and Mural Tour, a Bike Tour, Trolley Tours and even a Love Letter Train Tour.

The Love Letter tour starts on the subway in Center City and travels to West Philadelphia.  Once the train emerges from underground the show begins.  Love Letter consists of 50 rooftop murals.  Inspired by a young man’s crush on a girl who road the train each day, the love letter became not only a love letter from a guy to a girl, but also a love letter to the community.

“Meet Me at Fifty Second if only for Fifty Seconds” reads one mural.  Another reads   “Your Everafter is all I’m After”.   Although no one claims to know the fate of the relationship that inspired the letter, there is one mural with the message “We Share Sheets” while another references diaper money.  I like to think this love story had a happy ending.

The self guided Mural Mile Tour is a great addition to an escorted tour.  All you need is a map from Mural Arts, a cell phone and walking shoes.  Stroll around the city, call the phone number provided and punch in the corresponding mural number to hear the story of each mural along the route.  http://www.muralarts.org/

The Mural Mile Tour will lead you to a quaint neighborhood at the corner of 13th and Pine Streets.  There you will find Dirty Franks – a beloved dive bar with a culture all its own.   Dirty Franks’ exterior is Mural #11 featuring an assortment of famous Frank’s including Frank Lloyd Wright, Ben Franklin, Frankenstein, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Frank Zappa, Franklin D. Roosevelt and, of course, a frankfurter.  The mural tells the story of Dirty Franks – or at least part of the story.

Years ago some of the members of the community wanted the bar closed down but loyal patrons and other residents fought to keep it open.  The result was a compromise – the bar could stay but the sign had to come down.    In 2001 portrait artist David McShane gave Dirty Franks something better than a sign – a wall filled with Franks.

"Dirty Franks"
"Dirty Franks"

Dirty Franks’ art doesn’t stop on the walls outside.  Inside, the walls of the bar serve as a functioning art gallery displaying the works of local artists with collections rotating every six weeks.  Checking out the memorabilia around the bar could keep you busy all afternoon.  From the $2 Wall of Shame displaying shamefully cheap alcohol, to a memorial wall dedicated to those patrons who have gone to that great happy hour in the sky.

Philadelphia’s famous South Street is home to the Magic Gardens – a glittering labyrinth of mosaics created by Isaiah Zagar.  An award-winning mosaic mural artist whose work can be found on over 100philly-051 public walls throughout Philadelphia and around the world, Zagar began working on the Magic Garden in 1994 in a vacant lot near his studio.  He spent 14 years excavating tunnels and grottos, sculpting multi-layered walls, and tiling and grouting the 3,000 square foot space.

The Magic Gardens site includes a fully tiled indoor space and a massive outdoor mosaic sculpture garden.  It includes folk art statues, bicycle wheels, colorful glass bottles, Zagar’s hand-made tiles and thousands of glittering mirrors.  Zagar and his wife, Julia, served with the Peace Corps in Peru for three years.  His artistic creations draw from his cultural and personal experiences.  http://www.phillymagicgardens.org/

A weekend of strolling through outdoor art should also include art ofphilly-043 the culinary type.  Food, like art, is often inspired by personal experiences.  This is certainly true at Rex 1516 also located on Philadelphia’s South Street.  Here Executive Chef Regis Jansen serves creations drawn from his Southern roots.  An Alabama transplant, Chef Jansen creates comfort food with a modern twist.  Menu items include Crawfish Pot-Pie, Seitan Meatloaf and Pork Loin stuffed with cornbread and sausage, served with sweet potato mash, collard greens and morel sauce.  The restaurant offers a weekend brunch menu with more updated Southern favorites like Shrimp & Grits and Cornmeal Waffles.  Be sure to save room for dessert.  There is a Sweet Potato Duo – sweet potato cheesecake and fried sweet potato pie – that is truly a work of art.  http://rex1516.com/

August, 2012 – Great Dining is right at “Home” at Living Room

Great Dining is right at “Home” at Living Room

By Saucy Sarah

Living Room

1709 N. Congress Avenue (inside Catalina Plaza)

Boynton Beach, FL 33426. Phone: (561) 742-4399

Tucked away at the far end of the Catalina Center, in up-and-coming Boynton Beach, you will find the unassuming store front of Living Room. Don’t be dissuaded, go inside and find yourself in a seductively sensual realm of food and drink. I had passed by this restaurant so many times, being a Boynton native, and never thought of going in. A few friends who had gone told me if I wanted to dsc_0267understand what Living Room was all about, I would have to go and discover it for myself. So off we went on a Friday night to find out just what Living Room had in store for us.

You enter into a dark, rich, cool environment that I can only call a luxurious tangle of Far-East import combined with feminine boudoir. The place has a powerful female vibe; Tiffany lighting, feathers, and beaded table clothes. There are intimate alcoves that house tables for two and eclectic gatherings of couches and chairs for lounge-loving groups. The impressive and thoughtful wine list comes housed in a binder covered with dazzling pin-up girls. The female powered staff is there to dote on you and make you feel welcome. Warning: Living Room is small and fills up fast, so do make a reservation before coming to dine.

The menu is not extensive, but boasts a collection of inspired small plates, flat breads, and entrees that the proprietor lovingly calls, “exotic comfort food”. Sharing is encouraged and I for one was refreshed to learn this. Nowadays, we live in a world where everyone is charging a sharing fee. Food is meant to be celebrated and shared amongst those we love and it is nice to know Living Room speaks this sacred foodie language. dsc_0271

We ordered several dishes to taste. For starters, we chose the soup du jour, a shrimp and crab soup that arrived as a hybrid delight with the creaminess of a bisque and the texture of a chowder from potatoes and peas. We also ordered the pretzel bread sticks ($2.95). The bread came piping hot, fresh and chewy with perfect pretzel flavor and served with decadent European style butter.  Heaven: dipping chunks of the bread into the soup.

Next, we had the duck drummettes with sweet & spicy sauce ($8.95). The duck was a marvel. All of the typical fat that keeps you from ordering duck was nonexistent, just lush hunks of perfectly cooked duck meat with a crispy outer coating that was crunchy and not greasy at all. I was just utterly impressed by the thought and care that was taken with this dish. The duck alone is worth a trip to Living Room.

For our final dish, we chose the Steak and Mushroom Pie ($14.95). We had mentioned to our server that wedsc_0274 would share the dish. As a testament to Living Room’s “open-sharing” policy, the single entrée came out present on two separate plates for us. Both dishes were beautifully arranged with half the pie and a pile of perfectly cooked green beans and carrots. We were extremely impressed and pleased that they had gone out of the way to accommodate us. The steak and mushroom pie is a slow-cooked conglomeration of tender steak chunks and mushrooms in a deep and rich sauce from the braising liquid, spooned into a lighter-than-air puff pastry shell and then placed on a mound of dreamy mashed potatoes. Reminiscent of Julia Child’s beloved dsc_0266Beef Bourguignon, it is a decadent and hearty meal and easily enough for two.

Living Room offers a small but exciting array of desserts worthy of a visit alone. In fact, this is just the kind of place to go for just dessert. There are several “deserts of the day” and you can order the “make-dsc_0264your-own-S’mores” where you actually cook the marshmallows over a small hibachi right at your table. How fun is that? It is a great place for a romantic rendezvous or a night out with the girls. A place for indulgence at very reasonable prices. My only suggestion is that they get some better music that matches the sexy atmosphere and decadent food.

Yes, Living Room is a bit of a drive, but it is worth the journey. The beach is just two miles down Boynton Beach Blvd. Have an exquisite meal and then take a walk by the sea and make a fantastic adventure of the night. Food should be about exploration and adventure. A good meal is worth the travels, so get in your car and come to Boynton Beach and make yourself at home at Living Room.

OASIS AWARDED $80,000 GRANT FROM THE JIM MORAN FOUNDATION

Greenacres, Florida, July 26, 2012 – Oasis Compassion Agency has been awarded a grant from The Jim Moran Foundation for its Career Center and Women’s Center operations.  This is The Jim Moran Foundation’s first grant to Oasis, which helped 700 families get back on their feet in the past year through its holistic, self-help program.  The $80,000 grant ($45,000 accessible this year and $35,000 next year) will fund the essential position of the Case Manager, who qualifies and works with the clients to determine a course of action for success, and a part-time Women’s Center Coordinator, who will ensure the effectiveness and operation of the program.

“Through our partnership with Oasis Compassion Agency, we are able to reach women and families in crisis and help stabilize their current circumstances while offering comprehensive services to equip them to overcome life’s hardships,” said Jan Moran, chairman and president, The Jim Moran Foundation.

Oasis, now in its ninth year of assistance, helps its central Palm Beach County clients stabilize and improve their economic circumstances with a three-pronged approach in which roadblocks to success are identified, a plan is created to overcome those obstacles, and that plan is implemented.  Oasis assists its clients with food and clothing while requiring clients to attend job counseling as well as other counseling and/or classes in personal finance, computers, typing, nutrition, and others.

“The Jim Moran Foundation’s generous commitment has helped Oasis continue its commitment to addressing the holistic needs of our clients,” said Sharon Gill, Oasis Founder and Chairman of the Board.

Founded by automotive pioneer Jim Moran, the mission of The Jim Moran Foundation is to improve the quality of life for the youth and families of Florida through the support of innovative programs and opportunities that meet the ever-changing needs of the community. The Foundation has invested more than $30 million in education, elder care, family strengthening, after school and youth transitional living initiatives since its inception in 2000 — with efforts currently focused in Broward, Palm Beach and Duval counties. Through a long-term Grant Agreement, The Foundation’s significant funders are JM Family Enterprises, Inc., and its subsidiaries, including Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC. The Wellington Chamber of Commerce Proudly Welcomes

DiSalvo’s Trattoria As A New Member

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that DiSalvo’s Trattoria has become a  new member.  The restaurant was established by Pasquale “Patrick” DiSalvo  who was born in Bagheria, disalvos Sicily and grew up with a deep respect for family values and an appreciation of fresh, delicious homemade meals prepared by his “Momma” Rosa.  In 1955, as a 5 year old boy, Pasquale’s father moved the family to the United States and settled in Milwaukee.  There, at the age of eight, Pasquale got his first job (with no pay) in the restaurant business peeling 50 pound bags of potatoes with his father.   Later the family moved to New York where Pasquale grew up.

For almost three decades Pasquale worked hard and became a successful, multi-tasking entrepreneur and business owner based in the western communities of Palm Beach County.  He was a real estate developer and is now a Certified Public Accountant.  He currently owns and operates DiSalvo & Associates, PA (a Certified Accounting Firm located next to the restaurant) with his children Jill and Scott.

Due to Pasquale’s upbringing and his passion for family and good food, he created DiSalvo’s Trattoria located at 1760 N. Jog Road #180 in West Palm Beach, Florida.  It is a family owned restaurant dedicated to cultivating a warm, friendly environment where guests feel like “famiglia” and enjoy “Momma’s” original recipes prepared and served by the DiSalvo team.  Per tradition, Pasquale personally checks the food every night with a taste test to ensure quality.   He stated that his restaurant offers “great, simple Italian food that’s authentic Southern Italian.”  He also added that his restaurant is known as the place with the “World’s Best Meatball.” The restaurant has a full service wine and liquor bar, full service catering for up to 100 people in their “Famiglia Room”, and a private dining room that seats up to 25 people.

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce also recognizes Pasquale DiSalvo’s many contributions to the community.  He is committed to children’s charities and is active in the Healthcare District of Palm Beach County.  In addition, he recently provided financial help to the widow of one of his former employees.   The Chamber is pleased to have DiSalvo’s Trattoria as a new business member.   For more information, visit  http://disalvostrattoria.com and visit http://wellingtonchamber.com.

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce Proudly Welcomes

One Price Dry Cleaner As A New Member

onepricedrycleaners-go
Ambassador to the Chamber, Bob Salerno - Ultra Cleaners; Jack Linden - One Price Dry Cleaner; Dana Linden - One Price Dry Cleaner; Ambassador to the Chamber, Maggie Zeller - Iberiabank.

One Price Dry Cleaner is one of about 7% of drycleaners who use the Hydrocarbon cleaning system. Although Hydrocarbon machines are more expensive, they do offer more benefits than the Perc system. Hydrocarbon is an organic solvent that is safe for the environment, there are no known health hazards with Hydrocarbon usage, clothes get cleaner, brighter, softer and odor-free, and it is safe on beads, leather trims, and other plastic ornaments. On the other hand, the Environmental Protection Agency states that “perc” is a possible-to-probable carcinogen that creates a list of increased health risks and is damaging to the environment if it accidentally leaks into water systems.

When asked what message he would like to share with the community, Jack said, “I want the community to know that my wife and I are hands on; one of us will always be there to take care of any problems that may come up.”  In addition, their dog Jake is on site at all times as well.  As a Shih Tzu in a drycleaning establishment with no air conditioning in the summer, things can get pretty hot.  Jake always stays cool by relaxing on a “Chillo” mattress and a fan blowing on him.   Jack added “Our goal is to provide nice service at a great price.”

CHILDREN’S AUTHOR TO READ AT PALM BEACH ZOO
Grant from PNC Foundation to expand conservation &

educational youth reading program

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., July 26, 2012 – The Palm Beach Zoo has received a $4,000 grant from the PNC Foundation to expand its conservation and educational youth reading program, which includes hosting Theresa Burns, aauthor-theresa-burns well-known children’s author. Ms. Burns will read her books, You’re Not My Cat, This Bear and That Bear, and The New Kangaroo on Saturday, August 4 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the zoo and sign books after each presentation.

The grant from the PNC Foundation, which receives its principal funding from The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: PNC), will allow the Palm Beach Zoo to offer creative, fun and entertaining methods of introducing some of its 1,400 animals to children through the written word. PNC provided the funding in support of Grow Up Great, its bilingual program in early childhood education.

Theresa Burns is originally from Chicago Illinois. She dreamt of illustrating children’s books since she was 5 years old.  She wrote and illustrated her first book, You’re Not My Cat, in 1989 for Harper Collins. She has since illustrated 20 other books for other authors. She works for major publishers and authors who wish to self-publish. Theresa has also painted murals for schools, hospitals, businesses and private homes. Her paintings have been shown in galleries across the United States. Theresa enjoys working with children and has taught art and reads her books in schools to share her passion for illustration. Theresa lives in Ft. Lauderdale Florida with her husband, two daughters, a poodle, five cats, two guinea pigs, two birds and many fish! Her work can be seen at www.theresaburns.com

“Our support of the Palm Beach Zoo’s youth reading program is a strategic investment in the future of our children in the area,” said Craig Grant, PNC regional president for Eastern Florida, speaking on behalf of the PNC Foundation. “It is a perfect example of how teaching preschoolers what they see at the zoo can be reinforced by experiencing it through the pages of a book.”

Wellington is hosting several Budget Challenge sessions throughout the day on Friday, August 3rd at the Wellington Community Center located at 12150 Forest Hill Boulevard. Each session is limited to the first 100 registrants.

“The Budget Challenge will help Wellington set its funding priorities for the next fiscal year and will help us create a balanced budget that reflects the community’s values,” said Financial Management and Budget Director Mireya McIlveen. “We want to know not only what programs and services our residents need, want, and are willing to pay for but also what we could do without.”

Four sessions are scheduled for members of the Central Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce, Village Board and Committee members, Wellington sports providers, seniors, and the general public.
