July, 2012 – “Girls Night Out” Event Benefits Kids Cancer Foundation

“GIRLS NIGHT OUT” EVENT BENEFITS KIDS CANCER FOUNDATION

 

Many say that these summer months are a slow time of year , here in the Western Communities.  But, you certainly wouldn’t know it by the crowd that showed up at The Player’s Club to attend the second Girls Night Out event.  “We had groups of women,  arriving at our front door from 6:00 on, to enjoy a fun night out with their friends,” explained Dolores Schlick, director of catering at The Player’s Club, “and most of them didn’t go home until it was over!”

 

The July Girls Night Out evening had plenty of tempting options for the ladies– shopping with over 20 vendors on site, delicious drink and food specials to indulge in, plenty of raffle prizes to win and DJ GFY playing music all night long.  Not only were the  women enjoying a fun night out, but they were raising some money for a good cause.

 

As part of the event, each vendor was asked to donate a prize to be used as a raffle prize, and the money raised at the July event  from the sale of the raffle tickets was donated to Kids Cancer Foundation. Michelle O’Boyle, the Founder and Executive Director of the Kids Cancer Foundation, was on hand distributing information about the work that they do.   The mission of  The Kids Cancer Foundation is to provide hope and support to local children and families battling cancer and/or blood disorders right here in our community.  There was also a large group of volunteers—families, kids, friends and supporters—all helping to sell those raffle tickets to the crowd.

 

 Each month, there will be a different local charity chosen to benefit from the raffle proceeds.  “We are proud to offer this support to local charities, such as the Kids Cancer Foundation, that are making a difference in our community every day,” explained Maureen Gross, director of development and community outreach at Phelps Media Group. “It is organizations like this that make the Western Communities such a wonderful place to live, and every month there are many women who come out to specifically support that month’s charity.”

 

Girls Night Out will be held on the second Thursday of every month at The Player’s Club from 6:00p.m until 9:00p.m.  Next month’s Girls Night Out event, sure to be a sellout, will be on Thursday, August 9th and the benefiting charity will be the Sickle Cell Foundation of Palm Beach County .  For information about attending contact Schlick at [email protected](561)795-0080, or for vendor information contact Gross at [email protected] (561)714-0887.

The Plaza Theatre Hosts Original Grease Star in Staged Musical Reading of Borsch Belt Bistro

 

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL. –  The Plaza Theatre in Manalapan, is proud to present the staged reading of Borscht Belt Bistro by Carol Mendelson and Ken Mazur. Taking place at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 30, and 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2012, the stage will come alive as the cast gives new voice to this epic tale of love, music, and memories.

 

Told as an engaging flashback by Lena to her granddaughter, Molly, the story begins with seventeen-year-old Lena and her family arriving in the United States from Russia . Lena shares memories of living in a cramped apartment in New York City with her parents, her father’s brother and his wife, and their struggles doing all they can to survive. Lena finds her love of music at a young age and uses her talent to help to support her family. Her singing reveals a great talent and catches the attention of not only good guys, but also gangsters. She becomes a legend on the streets, which is where she meets her true love, Benny, and gets mixed up with Jewish mob boss, Maxie. Lena ’s uncle takes on Maxie by opening up The Borscht Belt Bistro in a tale that will have you on the edge of your seat.

 

Ilene Kristen, who is famous for her roles on One Life To Live, Ryan’s Hope, and as the original Patty Simcox on Broadway, will play Mama; Missy McArdle who has found fame regionally with her knockout performances will play older Lena; Avi Hoffman, who has found fame on television and on stage around the Country will play Uncle Ruby; and Zoey Burger, a local 11-year-old sensation, will play Molly. Andy Rogow is Director and Alan Jacobson is Producer.

FEDERATION-FUNDED JEWISH FAMILY CENTER ADAIN LO  IN ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA WINS RUDERMAN PRIZE

 

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. – July 19, 2012 – The Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County-funded Jewish Family Center Adain Lo was one of 10 inaugural Ruderman Prize in Disability winners that will each receive a grant of $20,000 to continue its work.

 

The Ruderman Family Foundation received over 150 applications from seven countries, including the United States, Israel, Russia, the United Kingdom and Mexico.

 

“Adain Lo delivers hope, inspiration and opportunity to many with disabilities, said Jay Ruderman, president of the Ruderman Family Foundation, the organizational goal of which is the full inclusion of people with disabilities in the Jewish community.

 

“This is a big honor,” said Eugena Lvova, vice president of Jewish Family Center Adain Lo. “We strongly believe that the Jewish community should be open and welcoming for all…regardless of physical, social or financial conditions.”

 

Jewish Family Center Adain Lo in St. Petersburg, Russia, is among the largest provider of Jewish programs for children and families in the city. The center’s model of Jewish education with pluralism, a holistic approach to the family, creativity, independence and self-sufficiency is being studied by organizations in Israel and the U.S. The Center was among the first in Russia to hire people with disabilities, and is a vocal advocate on this topic.

 

The Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County serves residents from Boynton Beach to Jupiter and west to Wellington as the central Jewish community-building organization of the greater Palm Beaches. LOCAL CHILDREN’S AUTHOR TO READ AT PALM BEACH ZOO
Grant from PNC Foundation to expand conservation & educational youth reading program  

 

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., July 17, 2012 – The Palm Beach Zoo has received a $4,000 grant from the PNC Foundation to expand its conservation and educational youth reading program, which includes hosting Sharon Bastin, a local children’s author. Ms. Bastin will read her book, The Oak Tree and The Rock, on Saturday, July 21 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the zoo and sign books after each presentation.

 

The grant from the PNC Foundation, which receives its principal funding from The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: PNC), will allow the Palm Beach Zoo to offer creative, fun and entertaining methods of introducing some of its 1,400 animals to children through the written word. PNC provided the funding in support of Grow Up Great, its bilingual program in early childhood education.

 

Susan Duncan, Head Librarian at The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach said, “Ms. Bastin has written this book for very small children learning to accept new friends, deal with rejection and appreciate the differences surrounding them in school and in the larger community. It is illustrated with a friendly rock and the big oak tree that learns to share his space. Together they create a comfortable and restful place in the park where visitors can sit and read and enjoy the great outdoors. Large print and brief text using strong verbs and colorful adjectives makes this first book user-friendly. We have gladly accepted this book as an addition to our Lower School library. We hope that this local author will continue to write for young readers.”


Kimberly M. Hill, Director of the Peter Pan Preschool and Murray-Hill Private School in Palm Beach Gardens said, “The Oak Tree and The Rock is a beautiful story of sharing and cooperation. The book captures young readers with its vivid yet tranquil illustrations and inspirational message. The Oak Tree overcomes his loneliness and makes lifelong friends. As an educator, I recommend this story to be included in your child s library. The Oak Tree and the Rock story and underlying lessons are included in our Peter Pan Preschool Character Education Program. Special thanks to Sharon Bastin, talented author/illustrator, and mother of three wonderful girls who inspire her stories. We look forward to future books.”

Sharon Bastin lives in West Palm Beach, Florida with her three daughters, Ashley, Amanda and Amber. She has a degree in Business Administration from Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. Sharon wrote, illustrated and published this book and has several books planned for the future.

 “Our support of the Palm Beach Zoo’s youth reading program is a strategic investment in the future of our children in the area,” said Craig Grant, PNC regional president for Eastern Florida, speaking on behalf of the PNC Foundation. “It is a perfect example of how teaching preschoolers what they see at the zoo can be reinforced by experiencing it through the pages of a book.”

Shulamit Hadassah’s Keurig Coffee Maker Winner!

 

Members and friends of the Shulamit Chapter of Hadassah met at a local merchant on 441 near Southern Blvd. on Friday July 20, 2012 to draw the winning ticket for a Keurig coffee maker.  The ticket was drawn by the merchant’s patron Charice L. Williams.  The winner was Teresa Yaklin who purchased the ticket from her neighbor, Hadassah member Marie Zauder.  Mazel tov, Teresa!

 

Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, is a volunteer organization that inspires a passion for and commitment to its partnership with the land and people of Israel. It enhances the health of people worldwide through its support of medical care and research at the Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem. YOUNG SINGERS OF THE PALM BEACHES TO PRESENT BROADWAY ARTISTS STUDIO

TO PROVIDE MUSICAL THEATER INTENSIVE FOR SOUTH FLORIDA YOUTH

 

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., — July 17, 2012 — Start spreading the news.   South Florida teens and pre-teens hoping to make it in the “Big Apple” can do more than give their regards to Broadway when Young Singers of the Palm Beaches presents Broadway Artists Studio, a three-week musical theater intensive to be presented by award-winning artistic directors and faculty who have all done multiple Broadway shows.  To be held from July 23-Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach, the workshop is still accepting applications. 

Created for all levels of voice, acting and dance, the Broadway Artists Studio workshop will provide professional instruction for young Broadway hopefuls presented by faculty direct from Broadway, who are bringing the experience of over 20 Broadway shows to South Florida.  The classes will be taught by featured Broadway guest artists, choreographers and a director/conductor, culminating with a Showcase Performance on August 10th. In addition, casting director Nora Brennan of Nora Brennan Casting of Manhattan, who is currently casting “Matilda” on Broadway, will be conducting a workshop on August 9TH.

The Broadway Artists Studio is produced by and is in collaboration with Young Singers of the Palm Beaches with special thanks to the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 

“Young Singers of The Palm Beaches is proud to present The Broadway Artists Series, featuring the talents of master artists with extensive Broadway experience for South Florida youth,” reported Beth Clark, executive director of Young Singers of The Palm Beaches.  “This professional musical theater  program will include training on performance as well auditions, created to give South Florida teens and pre-teens an insider’s guide to landing a role in a Broadway musical.”

Created by venerable Broadway performers Jason Gillman, Jackie Bayne Gillman, Greg Graham and Nadine Isenegger, Broadway Artists Studio classes will be taught by the artistic directors as well as “special guest artists,” including famed musical director/conductor Jerry Mitchell, who has received the Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics’ Circle Awards, and Laura Bell Bundy, a Tony-nominated actress.  Special guest artists will be coming in for one day each to teach master classes.

 “We are delighted to announce that Greg Graham, Nadine Isenegger, Steve Freeman, Laura Bell Bundy, Jerry Mitchell and Nora Brennan will provide training at the inaugural Broadway Artists Studio,” noted Jason Gillman, a graduate of the University of Florida, who starred opposite John Lithgow and Jonathan Pryce in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels on Broadway.  (Please see attached bios with this release: http://www.broadwayartistsstudio.com/shop/page/2?shop_param=.)

“The Broadway Artists Studio was created to provide professional training for the theater, presented by accomplished Broadway artists, on a variety of topics for those interested in a Broadway career.  While we anticipate that it will be fun, those enrolled will leave with a great appreciation of what it takes to be part of a Broadway production and how to have a successful audition,” Gillman noted.

Young Singers of the Palm Beaches is Palm Beach County’s award winning community-based children’s choir. A multi-racial, multi-cultural arts education organization based centrally in West Palm Beach at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, its enrollment for the 2012-2013 choir season is comprised of singers in grades 3-12 from all parts of Palm Beach County’s diverse racial, ethnic, geographic, and socio-economic communities.  Singers in the YSPB program learn all aspects of proper choral singing and vocal technique, which includes posture, breathing, diction, vowel articulation, music reading and sight singing.  Members also learn interpretation, music history, rehearsal and performance techniques, presentation and etiquette.

2012 Central Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce Poker Tournament will be held at the Palm Beach Kennel Club in August

 

The 2012 Central Palm Beach Chamber Poker Tournament will take place on Sunday, August 12th at the Palm Beach Kennel Club. The tournament begins at 12pm. The First Place winner will receive a cash prize of $1000 plus a seat at the World Series of Poker Circuit which will be held for the third year in a row at the Palm Beach Kennel Club in February of 2013.

 

The tournament entry fee which includes a seat, dinner and two drinks is $75 per person or you can reserve a table of 10 for $750. For those not interested in playing poker, there is a Dinner Buffet dog races for $30. “We are really excited to be holding our 5th annual poker tournament at the Palm Beach Kennel Club. It is home to the World Series of Poker Circuit and our participants will have the opportunity to be in a professional atmosphere with professional poker dealers. It is going to be a great experience for everyone” says Marc Schlags, Events Coordinator for the Central Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce.
