MIAMI, FL – NOVEMBER 8, 2012

How do you get a cat to stop spraying while simultaneously usingCat Lady explores the parallel worlds of two polar opposite archetypes living at the margins of the dating world — musty cat ladies and the fast-talking male pick-up artists who hunt among them.

theater to end existential loneliness AND racism?  This frequently asked question is tackled by Kristina Wong in her devastatingly hilarious play Cat Lady which will open Mad Cat Theatre Company’s 13th season.

Wong, a multi-talented performance artist whose diverse body of work ranges from stand-up comedy to commentary on American Public Media’s “Marketplace” to film documentary and articles in Playgirl magazine, has been called “sassy” and “original” (LA Times), “raucous and irreverent” (AP) and an “Asian American Lily Tomlin” (American Theatre Magazine).  Cat Lady is her fifth full-length show, and her first full-length ensemble piece.

A theme uniting Wong’s various performances is her offbeat curiosity and social conscience. Whether it’s exploring the high incidence of depression and suicide among Asian American women (Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) or the contradictions of the bio-fuel movement (Going Green the Wong Way), Wong consistently displays a subversive intelligence and a knack for interpreting the strangeness of our times. Cat Lady, which will be directed this time around by Paul Tei, is no exception.

Wong’s cat, Oliver, and his rash spraying problems was the inspiration of Cat Lady, which premiered as a work-in-progress at the REDCAT NOW Festival in Los Angeles followed by runs in Houston at Diverseworks and at the ODC Theater in San Francisco.   In Cat Lady, Wong delves into the psychology behind hoarding – of both animals and humans.  Unmarried women who live alone with cats (“cat ladies”) and aggressive pick-up artists commingle in Wong’s pop culture universe which manages simultaneously to draw on VH1 and Martha Graham.

In addition to featuring Wong, Mad Cat company member Ken Clement will be playing Oliver the Cat, along with the pick-up artists who wish to remain anonymous… for now.  So stay tuned.

ABOUT MAD CAT THEATRE COMPANY

Mad Cat Theatre Company was founded in Miami in the fall of 2000 by actor/director/writer Paul Tei. Its mission remains the same to this day: to create something new that’s exciting for you, us and them.  A core group of designers and actors with one artistic director and twelve years later with 32 productions under its belt, Mad Cat is still clawing its way into the cultural consciousness of the citizens of Miami with original works such as “Shepherd’s Pie”, “Here in my Car”, “Tin Box Boomerang”, “Artful Dodgers”, “Terminal Baggage”, “Mixtape”, “Viva Bourgeois”, “Going Green the Wong Way” and “So My Grandmother Died, Blah Blah Blah” mixed with their renditions of previous produced play such as “70 Scenes of Halloween”, “Matt & Ben”, “Mr. Marmalade”, “Animals & Plants”,  “Some Girls(s)” and “Macbeth and  the Monster”.  Mad Cat has brought originality, vitality and bite to everything they have done.  They’ve received rave reviews and have been decorated with such accolades as best new works, best productions, best fringe theatre, best ensembles, best designers, best director from folks from the Miami Herald, the Sun Sentinel, the Miami New Times and the Sun Post, plus a sprinkle of Carbonell awards, but it’s the respect and return engagement of its fan base that makes Mad Cat purr.

About The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse

The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse was created by Miami Light Project order to address the needs of our artistic community within the changing cultural landscape of Miami and within the context of an evolving international field of art and culture.   Envisioned as a laboratory for artists and an intimate place of gathering where new work is experienced in its various stages of development, The Light Box will provide a creative setting in which artists are able to intersect with audiences in new ways.  Our intent is to create a space where artists have the opportunity to research and make work, explore their artistic disciplines, and hone their unique voices through extended residencies, international cultural exchange, cross disciplinary approaches and the presentation of new work.

Of equal importance in The Light Box concept is the notion that cultural workers, the producers of the new work being developed by artists, will also benefit from increased creativity and productivity by sharing workspace and developing a cooperative work model.  We intend to develop alternative approaches to fundraising, audience development and marketing via our collaborative setting.  The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse is home to Miami Light Project, The M Ensemble Theater Company and Arts for Learning, three of Miami’s premiere non-profit cultural organizations.

The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse was made possible through support from The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Knight Arts Partnership Program, Goldman Properties, Art Place America and the FordFoundation. The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse is designed by Oscar Glottman.

April, 2013 – Relay for Life of Wellington

April, 2012 – Sponsorship Letter for Relay for Life

Dear American Cancer Society Supporter:

Thank you for your interest in sponsoring the American Cancer’s Society’s 2013 Relay For Life of Wellington. Each year this incredible event allows our local community to come together to Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back.

Survivors are recognized when they and their caregivers take that first lap and during the following special reception and dinner. Later we honor those who are still fighting and remember those we have lost during the powerful Luminaria Ceremony. Funds raised by the teams help the American Cancer Society in its mission to reduce the incidence of cancer, reduce the number of deaths from cancer and diminish the suffering of cancer patients. We are making progress, with the help of the whole community!

Relay For Life of Wellington will be held April 6th and 7th, 2013 at Wellington High School. Teams will form and fundraise for months, then set their campsites up for the 18 hour (through the night) Relay. At least one person from each team will be walking the track all the time and games, activities, food and music will keep everyone enthused and excited. By morning, during the closing ceremony, teams will be tired but happy—another successful Relay For Life!

Support from our sponsors is an important part of delivering the Relay experience. We’d like to ask you to consider the information supplied in this package in hopes that you will be able to contribute toward this important local event and support the ACS mission. Our goal this year is to have over 30 teams and raise more than $45,000. We need your support.

Please consider becoming a sponsor and think about forming a team to participate in this year’s Relay For Life of Wellington. Imagine a world with more birthdays—you can make that happen!

Sincerely,

Dan Montgomery

DOOMSDAY PARTY CELEBRATES MAYA CULTURE-APOCALYPTIC STYLE

Free Event Features End of World Music,Contests and More on the Last Day of the Mayan Calendar

(West Palm Beach) November 19, 2012-When planning yourdoomsday-1 holiday calendar this year, be sure to include the end of the world. The Doomsday Party marks the last day of the Maya Calendar on December 20 from 8pm to midnight. The event features “end of the world” music, apocalypse costume contest, free Mayan-inspired henna tattooing, art contest and more at Respectable Street Café in West Palm Beach.

December 21 is regarded as the end-date of a 5,125-year-long cycle in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. For event planner Elizabeth Dashiell, it is a golden opportunity to celebrate a milestone birthday. “Most people have ‘over-the-hill’ parties,” says Dashiell. “But December 20th being my actual 40th birthday, I get to have an ‘end of the world’ party. The excuse is a great one, but I also wanted to share a little bit of Maya culture at the same time.”

Some of the Maya themes include a game of “Bul,” a sort of early battle-themed board game the Maya’s played. Guests will have the chance to learn the simple, but addictive game involving stone “warriors” and dried corn as dice. Additionally, Maya-inspired and other types of henna tattoos will be provided by local henna artist, Diana Spring from 8:30pm to 10pm.

A costume contest, which invites partiers to dress up in their own interpretive “doomsday” apparel, and an on-site, original interpretive “doomsday” art contest will award the winners with Godiva chocolate baskets, as ka’kau’ (cacao, or chocolate) was cultivated by the Maya and considered a “gift of the gods.”

The rest of the party includes “end of the world” music (think R.E.M., nihilistic groups such as Joy Division and other similarly-themed groups and songs) from 8pm to 11pm; free food from 8pm while it lasts; “doomsday drink specials” all night; and a special “Doomsday” cake before a midnight countdown.

The Doomsday Party takes place December 20, from 8pm until midnight at Respectable Street Café, 518 Clematis Street in West Palm Beach. Admission is free. For more information, contact Elizabeth Dashiell at 561-543-8276.

Kravis Center for the Performing Arts

Spotlights Outstanding Local Teacher and Student for December 2012

Mark Fetterly, Director of Theater at Santaluces High School & Lindsay Bell, Theater Major at PBAU

(West Palm Beach, FL – November 15, 2012)  Tracy C. Butler, mark_andrew_fetterlyDirector of Education for the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, today announced the Center’s Outstanding Local Teacher and Student for the month of December: Mark Andrew Fetterly, Director of Theatre at Santaluces Community High School in Lantana, and Lindsay Bell, a Musical Theatre Major at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach.

Mark Andrew Fetterly

Mark Fetterly has diligently prepared his students to participate in two Kravis Center education programs: the annual Alan Lebow Award for Excellence in Shakespearean Performance and ArtScholars.  This past year, his Santaluces Musical Theatre class was the focus of the Kravis Center’s Broadway League National Education grant performance program in connection with the National touring production of Les Misérables

“The Kravis Center does so much for our community and Santaluces High School, which, as a Title One School, has one of the most diverse student bodies in Palm Beach County,” said Mr. Fetterly, a resident of Lake Worth who has been teaching for 11 years. “For example, my students have had great opportunities to train with Broadway professionals at Kravis Center workshops and were even able to conceptualize and perform a musical revue on the Persson Hall stage last year. What a thrill it was for all of us.”

lindsay_bellLindsay Bell

Now in her senior year studying Musical Theatre at Palm Beach Atlantic University, Lindsay Bell is already looking forward to auditioning for professional theater and dance companies after graduation. At the Kravis Center, Ms. Bell has served as a dedicated ArtsCamp Artistic Intern and summer programming volunteer.  In addition, she has participated in a number of Kravis On Broadway Student Workshops and Master Classes.

“These opportunities have benefited me in many ways, from being able to work with children in the area that I am studying (the arts), to observing the intricacies of running a successful theatre,” said Ms. Bell, who lives in downtown West Palm Beach and is the daughter of David and Jeanne Bell. “Sharing the arts with young people helps to broaden their minds and enables them to think critically in both the arts as well as other social issues; it also helps to cultivate the audiences of the future.”

“After 20 productive years of Kravis Center arts educational programming, we are proud to spotlight the motivated teachers and dedicated students who have contributed to our success,” said Ms. Butler. “Our Outstanding Teacher and Student of the month will each receive two free tickets to an upcoming performance of their choice at the Kravis Center.”

“A key component of the Kravis Center’s mission is to offer comprehensive education programs,” she added. “This statement clearly demonstrates the Center’s strong commitment to supporting and sustaining high quality, accessible and affordable educational programs for children and adults of our community.”

Note:

The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts Education Programs are Bringing the Arts to the Next Generation & the Next Generation to the Arts. These Education Programs are supported in part by the Annual Palm Beach Wine Auction.
