New Mobile Feeding Unit Arrives in West Palm Beach: The Salvation Army receives a new mobile feeding unit (canteen) and prepares personnel for disaster response

 

West Palm Beach, FL (12 July 2012) – Whether it be a local incident or a major disaster, The Salvation Army is the first on the scene and last to depart; honoring a century old commitment to serve those in need, at the time of need, and place of need.  Currently providing social and spiritual guidance in over 130 countries, The Salvation Army continues to be a beacon of compassion; of immediate aid, psychological support and spiritual counsel to individuals and families whose lives have been disrupted or shattered by either disaster or pure circumstance.

 

The Salvation Army of Palm Beach County is ensuring its personnel’s skills are up to date should local residents be impacted by natural or personnel disaster.  This Saturday, July 14th from 9am – 2pm, The Salvation Army Area Command will hold an Introductory Course to Emergency Disaster Services as well as debut its new mobile feeding unit or canteen.  The course will provide participants with an overview of The Salvation Army’s mission and its role within disaster work.  Participants will also be taught how to prepare and equip them for a disaster deployment should any portion of Florida be devastated.  In addition, the state of the art mobile feeding unit is the newest unit for The Salvation Army in the state.  This unit is prepared to produce 3,000 full meals per day and can sustain itself for days without being resupplied. The new mobile feeding unit is built with environmental and logistical considerations being given to its efficiency and impact on any given disaster scenario.

 

The Salvation Army Emergence Disaster Services seeks to provide physical, emotional and spiritual comfort in times of disaster.  Our disaster personnel are trained to assist in all kinds of emergencies by providing food, clothing, shelter or financial resources to those affected by such tragedy.  Most commonly known for our mobile feeding units, “Canteens,” these units are a welcome sight to firemen and policemen as well as survivors when serving hot and cold drinks, snacks and even complete meals.

More than 40 Students Complete Seventh Annual Océ Future Authors Project Writing Workshop – Four published authors make appearances

 

TRUMBULL, CONN. July 10,2012 – Océ, a Canon Group Company and an international leader in digital document management, today announced that more than 40 middle and high school student in Palm Beach County completed the 2012 Océ Future Authors Project writing workshop, making them eligible to become published authors.  A collection of their works, which they named Pens and Paper: Our Weapons of Mass Construction, will be presented at a formal book-signing event this fall.

 

Two of the students, Meher Kalkat and Michael Wang, both eighth graders at Bak Middle School of the Arts in West Palm Beach , also will have one piece each published in the online publication, East Magazine.

 

“At the workshop, we had the chance to write creatively in a way we can’t at school,” said Meher.  “I enjoyed it because the teachers nit-picked our work and edited everything so well that it really helped me improve my writing.  I would recommend this program to anyone who likes to write and wants to learn more skills.”

 

Michael agrees, saying that he especially liked being around other writers.  “The workshop was a place where I could learn how others write and to experience professional editing,” he said. “I’ve never had a real editor before. This was a great way to improve my writing.”

 

For 10th grader, Julian Stark, this was a perfect way to spend the summer, especially for someone who would like to pursue a career as a writer.  “I thought I was a good writer and went into this a little cocky,” said the Boca Raton High School student who may become a journalist some day.  “Then, my work came back with writing all over it.  I learned a lot and especially enjoyed the creative energy in the room.  I got a lot of ideas from the other students.”

 

Four professional authors gave presentations to the students during the workshop, sharing their personal experiences and offering writing and publishing tips.  The authors were Robert Forbes, children’s book author and president of ForbesLife magazine; Mary Monroe, a high school teacher and young adult book author, Nicole Barker, young adult author of Dancing With Ana; and Richard Rosser, the publisher of East Magazine.

Francis McMahon, vice president of marketing, Production Printing Systems, a division of Océ North America, says this year’s students displayed incredible skill.

“When I sat with the students during one of their workshop days, I was amazed by their passion and commitment to the craft of writing,” he said.  “Their work is creative and thoughtful.  I look forward to watching these students grow in their talents and love of writing in future years.” 

“We continued to be impressed by the students who choose to spend their summer vacations as Océ Future Authors,” he added.  “Our hope is that this experience will result in a group of young adults with lifelong commitments to writing, reading and learning.”

About the Océ Future Authors Project

In its seventh year, Océ Future Authors Project accepted applications this year from nearly 100 students who wanted to spend part of their summer vacations learning how to become published authors. The program begins with an intense eight-day writing workshop. Students gain insight into the process of writing, editing, and digitally publishing books through interactions with Océ executives, published authors, and licensed language arts teachers. Writings from each student are then compiled, professionally published and digitally printed in final book form by the Boca Raton-based Océ North America Production Printing Systems division. The finished book is then unveiled at a book signing hosted by the City of Boca Raton at the Spanish River Public Library. Since the program’s inception in 2006, nearly 300 students have participated in the Océ Future Authors Project writing workshops. 

 

The program is a partnership between the School District of Palm Beach County and Océ North America, and is made possible with generous grants from the Lawrence Sanders Foundation; Maroone, an AutoNation Company; and Xplor International, a not-for-profit educational and networking association serving users and suppliers of document technologies.

The teachers for the 2012 class were: Nicole Adamo, who teaches at Don Estridge Middle School; Katrina Sapp Holder, a playwright and short story author who also teaches at Don Estridge Middle School; and Cartheda T. Mann, the chair of the English department and writing coach at Glades Central Community High School.  Secondary Literacy Program Planner Diana Fedderman supervises the program for the District.

Wellington Asks Residents for Input about Village’s 2013 Budget

 

Wellington’s 2013 fiscal year begins on October 1st, 2012, and if you’re a resident, you’re entrusting the Village to do more with less – approximately $2 million less proposed funding compared to the 2012 fiscal year. Balancing the budget is a challenge that staff is tackling head-on, but Wellington wants your input to decide what deserves funding.

 

Wellington has posted a Budget Challenge on its website at www.wellingtonfl.gov. It’s a survey tool that allows residents to make decisions about how much funding certain services should receive, such as law enforcement, equestrian infrastructure, customer service, and programming at the Amphitheater. Wellington will compile the results of the Budget Challenge and the data will be presented to the Village Council at subsequent Budget Workshops.

 

“The Budget Challenge will help Wellington set its funding priorities for the next fiscal year and will help us create a balanced budget that reflects the community’s values,” said Financial Management and Budget Director Mireya McIlveen. “We want to know not only what programs and services our residents need, want, and are willing to pay for but also what we could do without.”

GIRLS NIGHT OUT EVENT TO BENEFIT KIDS CANCER FOUNDATION

 

Girls Night Out will be held at The Player’s Club on Thursday, July 12th, from 6:00p.m. until 9:00p.m., and The Kids Cancer Foundation has been selected as the local charity to benefit from this month’s event.

 

Girls Night Out, which is  held on a monthly basis, is designed to be a night of “ girl chat”, fabulous drink and food specials, music by DJ GFY and lots of shopping!  Over 25 vendors are expected to be on hand on the upper level of The Player’s Club, displaying a wide variety of quality, juried merchandise to tempt the women, as they enjoy time with friends, a glass of wine, and some delicious food!

 

“We held our first Girls Night Out in June, “ states Dolores Schlick, Director of Catering at The Player’s Club, “and the response from the community has been amazing.  The crowd thoroughly enjoyed themselves eating, drinking, shopping and winning raffle prizes.  This month, we expect even more of the same!” 

 

While this event is designed to provide a social night of fun with friends, there is a benefit to the community, too.  As part of the event, each vendor is asked to donate something from their merchandise to be used as a raffle prize, and the money raised from the sale of raffle tickets is donated to a local charity.  The Kids Cancer Foundation has been chosen as the charity to benefit from the raffle proceeds in July.  The Kids Cancer Foundation’s mission is to provide hope and support to local children and their families battling cancer and/or blood disorders.

QUANTUM FOUNDATION BRINGS SCIENCE ON A SPHERE TO SOUTH FLORIDA SCIENCE MUSEUM

Naming opportunity adds $240,000 and new exhibit to Museum expansion plans

 

( WEST PALM BEACH , FL ) The South Florida Science Museum will heighten its “wow factor” when its expansion is complete later next year, thanks to a generous gift from the Quantum Foundation. According to Lew Crampton , South Florida Science Museum CEO, the Museum received a $240,000 grant from Quantum Foundation to support its Science on a Sphere exhibit – targeted to be part of the Museum expansion scheduled to open in early 2014.

 

The South Florida Science Museum is the only public museum for science, technology and natural history education in Palm Beach County . The newly expanded Museum will feature state of the art, hands-on exhibitions, including a new traveling exhibition hall to showcase top new exhibits, an expanded aquarium, and an interactive Everglades Adventure. Expansion construction started earlier this month, and the Museum will remain open during the entire construction timeframe.

 

According to Crampton, Science on a Sphere is a room-sized global display system that uses computers and video projectors to display planetary data onto a six-foot diameter sphere, similar to a giant animated globe. Researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) developed Science on a Sphere as an educational tool to help illustrate Earth and Life system science to people of all ages.

 

“This unique exhibit will be the only full-sized Science on a Sphere exhibit in South Florida – another distinction that will set us apart from other science and nature centers,” said Crampton. “The innovative technology utilized in the Science on a Sphere is intended to educate multigenerational audiences about ongoing NOAA research being conducted at many laboratories and to inspire students so that they might consider scientific career paths. We are incredibly grateful to Quantum Foundation for recognizing the valuable influence this technology will have for our region.”

 

The Quantum Foundation is celebrating 15 years of making Palm Beach County a healthier place to live. With a mission to make the community a place where everyone has the opportunity to live healthy lives, regardless of their income, education or background, Quantum Foundation works to increase health care access, improve science and health education, and enhance the health care workforce.

 

“Quantum Foundation is committed to improving science education and showing students how exciting science can be while helping them grasp difficult concepts,” said Kerry Diaz, President and Trustee of Quantum Foundation. “This amazing Science on a Sphere exhibit gives children the perfect opportunity to do this and allows teachers from any school to use it as a tie-in to their curricula. It also means any child visiting with their class, family or friends can see that science is everywhere.”

 

Animated images of atmospheric storms, climate change, and ocean temperature can be shown on the sphere, which is used to explain sometimes complex environmental processes in a way that is simultaneously intuitive and captivating. Historic and real-time information can be graphically displayed on the Sphere, clearly demonstrating important environmental issues on a global scale such as climate change, animal migration patterns, ocean currents, weather patterns and dispersion of potential contaminants.

 

According to Crampton, the Quantum gift kicks off the Museum’s $1.5 million capital campaign over the next 18 months to add quality exhibits and new visitor amenities to the current expansion plans. In addition to Science on a Sphere, other interactive exhibits part of the capital campaign include an Everglades exhibit featuring aquatic tanks, an outdoor interpretive display and a simulated airboat ride; and a newly expanded Science and Nature path.

 

The South Florida Science Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to exciting curiosity and furthering the understanding and appreciation of science and technology. The Museum features more than 50 hands-on exhibits, a digital planetarium, fresh and saltwater aquariums, as well as natural history exhibitions. One Week Left for Palm Beach County Residents to Enter Wellington Talent Search

 

If you’re an amateur performer who’s ready to be discovered, here’s your chance win cash prizes and perform in front of talent agents! Wellington has extended the deadline for amateur Palm Beach County performers to enter the first-ever Wellington Talent Search competition to July 16th, 2012. The Grand Prize Winner will take home $500 and a full scholarship sponsored by Talent INC. to attend the Talent INC. National Talent Convention and Showcase in Orlando – a prize valued at nearly $2,000. Four runners-up will walk away with $250.

 

The competition welcomes both individual and group acts of all genres including singers, dancers, actors, comedians, magicians, and anything else that will wow the crowd and the panel of judges. Contestants must be at least eight years old by June 30th, 2012, and individual performers and at least half of the participants in each group act must reside in Palm Beach County. If you have what it takes, rush to the Wellington Community Center (12150 Forest Hill Boulevard) by July 16th with a completed application form, proof of age (such as a driver license or birth certificate), a headshot, and a CD or DVD with a three-minute sample of your performance. Discs must be clearly labeled with each performer’s name, title of the piece, phone number and category. Wellington will also accept YouTube links in lieu of discs. The Wellington Community Center will accept registrations from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

 

Entries selected for a live audition will be contacted no later than July 19th. Live auditions will be held on Friday, July 27th and Saturday, July 28th at 8:00 pm at the Wellington Amphitheater. Contestants who advance will perform in the Semi-Finals on Friday, August 3rd at 8:00 pm. The top 12 contestants will then compete in the finals on Saturday, August 4th at 8:00 pm, and the night will end with the dramatic announcement of the winners.

THE JEWISH WOMEN’S FOUNDATION OF THE GREATER PALM BEACHES PARTNERS WITH OTHERS IN THE U.S. AND ISRAEL TO PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY

                                                        

WEST PALM BEACH , FLA.– Recent acts of illegal exclusion and discrimination against women in Israel have spurred the formation of The Jewish Women’s Collaborative International Fund, with the mission of raising awareness about such important concerns as gender disenfranchisement and discrimination in the work place affecting women and girls in the Jewish and broader Israeli community.

 

The Jewish Women’s Foundation of the Greater Palm Beaches (JWF) is one of 14 foundations in the United States and three in Israel that are pooling resources to effect social change for women and girls in Israel, awarding a two-year $150,000 grant to Itach-Maaki, lead organization of “Bringing Women to the Fore: A Feminist Partnership.”

 

The groundbreaking collaboration, co-led by Assistant Director of the Jewish Women’s Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago Jennifer Elvey Schnepper and Associate Director of the Jewish Women’s Foundation of New York Rebecca Garrison, became possible through the support of Barbara Dobkin, a feminist funder in the United States and Israel .

 

“Many funders pay lip service to collaborative grant-making, but this type of sweeping collaboration is unprecedented in American Jewish life,” said Dobkin.

 

“People have come together to talk about issues, but they haven’t funded an effort collaboratively,” said Schnepper.

 

JWF Director Lori Warner said members of her organization are pleased to be a part of this important, international effort to improve Jewish women’s lives in Israel . “The project is a reflection of our JWF’s core values and demonstrates the power of women’s collective voices,” she noted.

 

“Awarding funds to Israeli organizations to address an issue in Israel is not new to the Jewish community; but collaborating on a solution is,” added Edith Gelfand, JWF co-chair.

 

The Feminist Partnership will use the grant to promote gender equality and women’s rights, and to minimize gender gaps on a variety of issues in Israel through large-scale social and media campaigns. This Israeli coalition aspires to lead effective change in social perception and public policy, to promote equality and reduce gender gaps in the economic, social and occupational spheres — making Israel a more gender-equal society. Participating organizations include: Itach-Maaki: Women Lawyers for Social Justice; Adva Center; The Israel Women’s Network (IWN); Economic Empowerment for Women (EEW); Achoti (My Sister) for Women in Israel; Mahut Center, Supporting Community – Women’s Business Development Center; and Women’s Spirit – Financial Independence for Women Victims of Violence.

 

The Jewish Women’s Foundation of the Greater Palm Beaches, a fund for social change of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County, is a vital part of the growing Jewish women’s fundraising movement committed to improving the status of Jewish women and girls through social change. (Jupiter, FL) – Auditions are over, the contestants are ready to shine – and locals are getting excited for Palm Beach County’s original, fun-filled American Idol-style show!

 

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre, in conjunction with the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Guild, is producing its ninth annual regional take on the television show American Idol on Saturday, July 21, at 7:30 p.m.

 

After a day in which nearly 100 local performers of all ages auditioned to become one of the next Palm Beach Idols, the Guild announced that 26 acts will entertain at the upcoming show.

 

The evening will feature performers of all ages and talents – country singers, dancers, a rock band, an opera singer and more – with the winners taking home cash prizes. There will be three categories: youth, teen and adult. Each category will have three finalists decided by panel of local celebrity judges, with the final winners determined by an audience vote.

 

“The auditions were incredible, and I am absolutely amazed each year that we have so many talented people here in South Florida ,” said Eileen Weissmann, the event’s producer and guild board member. “It’s going to be an interesting show. The contestants are fantastic, and the Guild loves this opportunity to bring the best of South Florida talent to our stage.”

 

Previous contestants have gone on to star in Broadway shows such as Beauty and the Beast and Mary Poppins, and previous teen winner Anthony Espina has gone on to a successful career as a movie composer.

 

The event will be emceed by radio host Kathy Greene, program director and on-air personality for Jupiter’s hometown radio station WJTW-FM, and radio veteran Tim Byrd, owner of the voiceover site VoxPower.com and publisher of the popular local blogsite PalmBeachLiveWorkPlay.com. Celebrity judges include Rachel Leigh of WFLX-TV FOX29, Tim Allan Walker of “The Mo and Sally Morning Show” on KOOL 105.5-FM, Michele Wright of WPEC CBS12, Leslie Gray Streeter of The Palm Beach Post and Carol Saunders of The Jupiter Courier Newsweekly.

 

The show is an annual fundraiser for the Guild, which raises money to support the not-for-profit Theatre and its Paul and Sandra Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts. The Conservatory offers classes taught by Broadway-caliber instructors in dance, voice, acting and musical theatre for students of all ages, including summer camps.
