YOUNG SINGERS OF THE PALM BEACHES TO PRESENT BROADWAY ARTISTS STUDIO

TO PROVIDE MUSICAL THEATER INTENSIVE FOR SOUTH FLORIDA YOUTH

 

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., — July 17, 2012 — Start spreading the news.   South Florida teens and pre-teens hoping to make it in the “Big Apple” can do more than give their regards to Broadway when Young Singers of the Palm Beaches presents Broadway Artists Studio, a three-week musical theater intensive to be presented by award-winning artistic directors and faculty who have all done multiple Broadway shows.  To be held from July 23-Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach, the workshop is still accepting applications. 

Created for all levels of voice, acting and dance, the Broadway Artists Studio workshop will provide professional instruction for young Broadway hopefuls presented by faculty direct from Broadway, who are bringing the experience of over 20 Broadway shows to South Florida.  The classes will be taught by featured Broadway guest artists, choreographers and a director/conductor, culminating with a Showcase Performance on August 10th. In addition, casting director Nora Brennan of Nora Brennan Casting of Manhattan, who is currently casting “Matilda” on Broadway, will be conducting a workshop on August 9TH.

The Broadway Artists Studio is produced by and is in collaboration with Young Singers of the Palm Beaches with special thanks to the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 

“Young Singers of The Palm Beaches is proud to present The Broadway Artists Series, featuring the talents of master artists with extensive Broadway experience for South Florida youth,” reported Beth Clark, executive director of Young Singers of The Palm Beaches.  “This professional musical theater  program will include training on performance as well auditions, created to give South Florida teens and pre-teens an insider’s guide to landing a role in a Broadway musical.”

Created by venerable Broadway performers Jason Gillman, Jackie Bayne Gillman, Greg Graham and Nadine Isenegger, Broadway Artists Studio classes will be taught by the artistic directors as well as “special guest artists,” including famed musical director/conductor Jerry Mitchell, who has received the Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics’ Circle Awards, and Laura Bell Bundy, a Tony-nominated actress.  Special guest artists will be coming in for one day each to teach master classes.

 “We are delighted to announce that Greg Graham, Nadine Isenegger, Steve Freeman, Laura Bell Bundy, Jerry Mitchell and Nora Brennan will provide training at the inaugural Broadway Artists Studio,” noted Jason Gillman, a graduate of the University of Florida, who starred opposite John Lithgow and Jonathan Pryce in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels on Broadway.  (Please see attached bios with this release: http://www.broadwayartistsstudio.com/shop/page/2?shop_param=.)

“The Broadway Artists Studio was created to provide professional training for the theater, presented by accomplished Broadway artists, on a variety of topics for those interested in a Broadway career.  While we anticipate that it will be fun, those enrolled will leave with a great appreciation of what it takes to be part of a Broadway production and how to have a successful audition,” Gillman noted.

Young Singers of the Palm Beaches is Palm Beach County’s award winning community-based children’s choir. A multi-racial, multi-cultural arts education organization based centrally in West Palm Beach at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, its enrollment for the 2012-2013 choir season is comprised of singers in grades 3-12 from all parts of Palm Beach County’s diverse racial, ethnic, geographic, and socio-economic communities.  Singers in the YSPB program learn all aspects of proper choral singing and vocal technique, which includes posture, breathing, diction, vowel articulation, music reading and sight singing.  Members also learn interpretation, music history, rehearsal and performance techniques, presentation and etiquette.

2012 Central Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce Poker Tournament will be held at the Palm Beach Kennel Club in August

 

The 2012 Central Palm Beach Chamber Poker Tournament will take place on Sunday, August 12th at the Palm Beach Kennel Club. The tournament begins at 12pm. The First Place winner will receive a cash prize of $1000 plus a seat at the World Series of Poker Circuit which will be held for the third year in a row at the Palm Beach Kennel Club in February of 2013.

 

The tournament entry fee which includes a seat, dinner and two drinks is $75 per person or you can reserve a table of 10 for $750. For those not interested in playing poker, there is a Dinner Buffet dog races for $30. “We are really excited to be holding our 5th annual poker tournament at the Palm Beach Kennel Club. It is home to the World Series of Poker Circuit and our participants will have the opportunity to be in a professional atmosphere with professional poker dealers. It is going to be a great experience for everyone” says Marc Schlags, Events Coordinator for the Central Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Marilyn Swillinger Named Friends President

Lynn University’s Friends of the Conservatory of Music announces Marilyn Swillinger as its president for a two-year term.

As a former teacher, Marilyn left the education field for a career in sales and marketing, mentoring and managing thousands of consultants and managers in the United States and abroad.

Since arriving in Boca Raton 10 years ago, Marilyn has been actively involved in the community and the nonprofits that serve it.

As an advocate for the arts, education and cancer research, she has continuously demonstrated her strong work ethic, creative force and unstoppable determination.

She is a life member of the Greater Boca Raton Cancer Chapter of the Pap Corps, which raises funds for Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. She was honored as its Woman of the Year in 2006; and became its president in 2010 for two years.

Additionally, she was nominated as a Woman of Style and Substance by the Symphony of the Americas Society in 2009; and is a member of the advisory board of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing.

Over the years, Marilyn and her husband, Mark, have been avid supporters of Lynn University, including the Conservatory of Music and the Live at Lynn theatre program. They are major benefactors of the Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center on the Lynn campus. They also support the Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Boca Raton Museum of Art, Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art and the Norton Museum of Art. 

The Friends of the Conservatory of Music is a volunteer organization formed to promote high quality performance education for exceptionally talented young musicians. Pastor’s Masters Golf Tournament to Benefit Royal Covenant Church

( Wellington , Fla. ) — Golf teams from churches throughout Palm Beach County will compete at Binks Forest Golf Club in the inaugural Pastor’s Masters Golf Tournament, Saturday, August 4. The scramble format event will tee off at 1:00 p.m., followed by an awards dinner, auction and raffle. Player entry fees are $75.00. Non-golfers may attend the dinner and auction for a $50.00 donation. Proceeds will benefit the Royal Palm Covenant Church in Royal Palm Beach.
 
“The recent news that the church is in such financial straights that it might close it’s doors was so disturbing that we pulled together our staff and met with Pastor Michael Rose offering a way to help,” said Bob Still, Binks Forest Golf Club Marketing and Membership Director.
 
After meeting with Pastor Rose and discussing several fundraising options, the Pastor’s Masters Golf Tournament emerged. The tournament allows teams of four players to compete in a friendly competition and much more. “While this event is not restricted to churches, the idea that if each church in the community were to send a team, we’d have a glorious success,” said Pastor Rose. Realizing that the golf tournament alone cannot totally meet the financial crisis, Binks has added a $1 Million Dollar Hole-In-One competition to the event. Two golfers will be selected for a chance to make a 165-yard hole-in-one at the conclusion of the tournament. If the player makes the shot, the player will receive $500,000 and the church $500,000. This would pay off the loan entirely.
 
“Crazier things have happened,” laughs Greg Schroeder, Binks General Manager. “I hope the positive vibes are there and someone gets that hole in one. Can you just imagine?”, he says with a smile and his eyes looking upwards to the heavens.
 
The thought of any relief to the mounting debt brings a smile to Pastor Rose’s face and those congregation members who are volunteering their time to seek business sponsors. “Our church is small, but we do many big things with God’s guidance,” says Rose, who has served as a non-salaried pastor for eight years. “We don’t have many golfers in our congregation, but a tournament like this is a blessing because of what it can do — not just for our church — but, for the entire community.”

Got an orchid climbing out of its pot and don’t know where to begin? Instructors Tom Wells and Sandi Jones of Broward Orchid Supply will show how to tackle that monster. Learn how often an orchid should be repotted, how to divide an orchid, about different potting medias and the proper type of pot or basket to use. Learn how to identify pests and diseases that harm orchids, from bacterial and fungal rots to insects, such as mealy bugs, thrips and scale. Find out what products to use to get rid of them and what to do to avoid them in the future. Orchids may be brought in for diagnosis, but must be placed in plastic bags to prevent contaminating other plants. Orchid supplies will be available for purchase.

Learn the secrets of vegetable gardening in South Florida from Arthur Kirstein, Coordinator of Agricultural Economic Development. The focus of this workshop is to implement successful agriculture techniques to manage small vegetable projects. Tips and techniques on site preparation, seedling establishment, planting, maintenance and harvesting will be covered. A tour of the Mounts vegetable garden will finish the program.

 

Everything Orchids / A Shady Affair Plant Sale

Saturday & Sunday, September 15-16 – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This annual plant sale offers attendees a great opportunity to acquire the best orchid and shade loving plants. Many of the area’s premier plant vendors will be selling a blooming variety of begonias, bromeliads, orchids, ferns, hoyas and aroids. Magnificent tabletop arrangements will be auctioned off in a silent auction to benefit the Garden. Fun and informative lectures will be offered on such topics as Basic Orchid Care, Shade Loving Plants and Fragrant Plants.

Efflorescence, Inc. is a professional horticultural firm based in Palm Beach County, which is widely recognized as one of the leaders in South Florida’s horticultural community. The firm’s landscape designs have regularly won high praise for its thoughtful solutions and artistic applications.

Rarely-shown works by Chagall, Demuth, Signac, and Wyeth are highlighted

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (July 12, 2012) — The Norton Museum of Art announces Watercolors from the Collection, a special exhibition on view from Aug. 3 to Oct. 4, 2012, featuring 14 rarely-exhibited works on paper by European and American artists.

From Paul Signac’s 1925 neo-impressionist landscape The River, to George Grosz’s politically-charged Eaten and to be Eaten from 1929, the exhibition highlights a broad spectrum of styles and subjects represented by watercolor and gouache (opaque watercolor) paintings created between the 1870s and 1950s. During this time, some of the United States’ most adventurous artists, including Charles Burchfield and John Marin, were best-known for their watercolors.  Artists such as Fernand Leger and Amedeo Modigliani used watercolor to explore ideas for avant-garde works in other media.  In addition to these artists, the exhibition also features works by Marc Chagall and Charles Demuth, as well as paintings by members of a later generation, including Andrew Wyeth and Sam Francis.

In conjunction with the Education and Curatorial Departments, the exhibition was organized by the Museum’s 2012 Summer Interns: Camille Cohen of Jupiter, who will be a junior at New York University; Eladia Morelos, a West Palm Beach resident and rising senior at Forest Hill High School; Allison Parssi, of Wellington, a 2012 graduate of Wellington High School, and incoming freshman at the Rochester Institute of Technology; Caroline Posner, a resident of Boca Raton and rising senior at Spanish River High School; and Lisa Slomka of Lantana, who will be a sophomore at Notre Dame University.

Aside from curating Watercolors from the Collection, the interns work on projects with staff in all departments of the Museum. Among several responsibilities, the interns lead Museum tours for summer camp groups as well as participate in discussions with community art professionals.

 

More about the Norton Museum of Art 2012 Summer Interns:

 

Camille Cohen, a resident of Jupiter, is a rising junior at New York University. She is working toward a BA degree in Individualized Study with a concentration in Art History and Communications. Her love for art and visual culture led to a year-long internship with The Stephen Haller Gallery in Manhattan. Cohen’s interests in traveling and exploring museums have inspired her to work in the art field.

Eladia Morelos, who lives in West Palm Beach, will be a senior in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at Forest Hill Community High School where she is the president of the art club. She loves viewing modern, street, and contemporary art. Salvador Dali, Fred Tomaselli, John Baldessari, Kiki Smith, and Swoon are among the artists who inspire her artwork, and her desire to major in the visual arts.

Caroline Posner of Boca Raton is a rising senior at Spanish River High School.  Art plays a significant role in her life through her work as editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, The Galleon, and her job as an art class teaching assistant. In addition, Posner loves the study of global affairs, diplomacy, and foreign languages, and aspires to work as a diplomat in the Foreign Service.

Allison Parssi is a resident of Wellington and graduated in the Class of 2012 from Wellington High School where she was a member of the French Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, golf team, and served as a math tutor. She will attend the Rochester Institute of Technology this fall where she plans to double major in Photography and Math. She loves large format photography—She is the 2012 winner of The Palm Beach Post Pathfinder Scholarship Award for Visual Arts—and has an interest in metalsmithing /jewelry design.

Lisa Slomka hails from Lantana and is a rising sophomore at the University of Notre Dame. She plans to apply for the school’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Program, which is the Honors Program within the Department of Art, Art History, and Design at Notre Dame. Lisa is interested in a career as an animator and hopes to intern at an animation studio in the future.

PALM BEACH COUNTY TEACHER CARRIED OLYMPIC TORCHES

July 27 Olympic Opening Ceremony Watch Party to feature Torches from Los Angeles and Atlanta Olympic Runs

Mitt Romney is not the only candidate on the November ballot who can claim ties to the Olympic Games.  Palm Beach County schoolteacher David Lutrin, who is running for Florida Statehouse in District 85, was a torchbearer for the Los Angeles based Games of the XXIII Olympiad as well as the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympic Games.

Lutrin, 58, teaches physical education at Boca Raton’s Coral Sunset Elementary and has taught in public schools for 22 years.   He was able to retain possession of the torches from both Olympiads and brings them to school to inspire his pupils each year. “Competitors from the Olympic Games come to compete in friendly competition and leave international politics aside for two weeks every four years.  I teach my kids that when they set foot on a playing field, you need to put aside personal differences and play the game for the love of the game.”

 

 

Lutrin plans to have both torches on hand for a July 27th London Olympic Games Opening Ceremony watch party, taking place at Abbey Road Restaurant and Sports Grill in Palm Beach Gardens.  Information about the event can be found on Lutrin’s campaign facebook page and website, www.lutrin.org.

 

 

As a charitable donor to a youth legacy program, Lutrin qualified to carry the torch in Los Angeles and torchbearers from those games were able to keep their torches.  Lutrin entered his wife Harriet in a Coca-Cola sponsored contest to carry the torch for the Atlanta Olympics and she won the contest.  She decided to let her husband run for a second time.  That torch was purchased and gifted to Lutrin by his school PTA, where Lutrin had been nominated as a United Way Community Hero.

 

 

Lutrin participated in lacrosse and track while at Queens College, and plans to use that experience in his run for State House in District 85, encompassing his residence in Palm Beach Gardens and northern Palm Beach County against incumbent Representative Pat Rooney.  “Politics is a different kind of competition but we’ll try to keep it friendly; I do look forward to carrying the torch for District 85 all the way to Tallahassee.”
